More game testing (aka praying I can still make this work)

I debated if this should go in the Games blog or not, but I decided to keep everything (about the current issues with my computer) in here.
After dinner, I decided to finally get my 16GB of RAM back in. The motherboard definitely showed it didn’t like this decision (by shutting off my computer a second after I tried to turn it back on), but worked the second time.

After setting the settings of the CPU from yesterday (via AMD OverDrive), I tried to run Wurm. For some odd reason, most of my custom settings have reset on me. Spent at least 15 minutes trying to remember how I had everything configured. Plus, Wurm is showing my old..very old accounts from 2010 (and setting profiles). The heck is going on?! I checked to make sure I wasn’t running in the wrong copy of Wurm, and I wasn’t.
Got ingame, and..well, I also figured out why I was getting low FPS. It was because I had forgotten I was limiting it to 60FPS. Upped it to 70 and it took full advantage.
So the FPS was as smooth as butter. This is awesome, I thought, until I saw a hell hound outside my deed.

Now I got walls and guards to protect me. That’s not the problem…what was, was the horrendous laggy animation I was seeing infront of me. Tried to call the guards, but my custom keybind was also gone. Had to re-add that(thankfully I remembered how I did it) and got the guards to assist.
Hellhound’s dead. I walk outside of my deed…the gate opening animation is laggy as well. This also affects doors..and guards. Oh god, the studdering. Yet all of that time, I was still sitting at 70FPS!
I tried to re-adjust a few settings (which only made things worse). Somehow, the framerate isn’t so smooth. Though I think I got rid of the door/gate animation lagging, I’m still seeing it from idle and combat animations (even saw it while I was looking down at my avatar’s body).

I think this issue is because my motherboard might not be utilizing all the RAM correctly. Even though Windows claims I have 16GB, it might be only using half of this while in a game. So as soon as I get done with this, I’ll be taking the sticks back out and try again, in order to prove (or deny) this theory.
If it is the RAM, then I got it. I’ll also try to switch out the RAM in there, with the RAM that I had in the sandwich bag for a few days (in order to..well, verify if it isn’t a case of faulty RAM).
If it’s not the RAM…ohhh boy. Could it be my GPU?! Or, the board not liking my GPU? I..don’t know if it could be the CPU (as I think it’s responsible for the framerate). It might be possible, but I think it’s too early to point fingers right now.
Well, I know for one thing, the additional RAM isn’t causing the issues with Youtube being slow with the video. So it’s possible both issues could be related (and not at the RAM).
But I’ll post back with the results.

.
And the results are IN! After forgetting I need to always underclock the CPU before I play a game (I really need to do that in BIOS), it’s the RAM! Thank goodness it wasn’t the GPU!! Also, while my computer was ‘in surgery’, I swapped out the “good” RAM for the “faulty” RAM (and put the “good” RAM in a bag that my PSU was in). So I just proved two things.
1. The RAM (when in the 4x 4GB configuration) is indeed not being utilized correctly by the motherboard (even though I did research on it, and I still don’t get the reason as to why. Possibly the board is faulty).
2. The RAM that was in a sandwich bag for a few days, was NOT faulty!! HOORAH! 😀

It also proves the issues I’m having with Youtube, isn’t related to Wurm. I actually blame that on the motherboard (as I said before).
So again, I’m stuck with 8GB. I could try to see if I could push for 12GB, but I don’t think that’s a good idea (nor do I think that’s even possible, as most boards only support dual channel).
Yes, this sucks…but it’s least it’s stable, and that’s what matters. Now I know what’s going on, I know how to fix it (..sometime in June).

The fact I now know this, I really don’t see a reason to make anymore of these computer blog posts (unless something major happens). I’m just going to have to deal with this ’till June. And even when that comes, I got to hope I can spare enough to afford the switchback to the old hardware (and that my parents are willing to take me back up there…if not, then I will have to put the computer on a dolly and walk it up there(I even had to do this once, but it was..I think 6 or so years ago)).

…Maybe there is hope? / Maybe I ‘might’ go with 10

So, guys. Some good news to pass along. Tried turning on my computer this afternoon. Turned off by itself once..and then the second time, it booted normally! No beeps! Maybe I got lucky, or reducing the number of cores did help? Debating if I should go down to 4 cores and try again tomorrow.

This is definitely promising, though! Could this be my ‘temp fix’ ’till June? Let’s hope so, guys. I’ve discovered four more reasons why I want my old hardware back (and I feel they’re all pointed at this motherboard which claims to be better than my old one(I wasn’t fooled by the flashy marketing practices they used on the box)). Three of these issues are Youtube-related, and one is with Pandora.
All of these issues, I didn’t have with my old hardware (at least, not as frequent).

First one (that is Youtube-related), is the reason I needed the drivers. When watching a video from the start, it’s tending to lagspike every 4 or so seconds. So I tried to get the drivers, and it kind of worked? It’s still doing it, but not as bad.

The second thing is related to the first, of what I went through to get said drivers…as it seemed for a time it was impossible to acquire. Nvidia’s website acted like my card didn’t exist in the 7 series (when searching for the drivers). And when I did find them.. they were from 2015. Was forced to use the bloatware that is ‘Geforce Experience’..where it’s having its own issues with ‘Nvidia Web Helper Service’ crashing everytime I load up the main app.
Dezent somehow was able to find me drivers from this year, and they worked!

And now the third Youtube-related thing, which is pointed to this tongue-in-cheek named “Killer Ethernet” this board has, is hilariously..awful. I’ll give it this, though.. it’s an absolute “killer” in my enjoyment of watching videos in 1080p (with ridiculously slow buffering speeds). And this has happened ever since I had this board. Thankfully, it only lasts for about 15 or so minutes until it breaks and buffers to the speed I expect it to (for how much I pay to my ISP every month).
HAH..wow. This flashy marketing shit (trying to sound all hip for the latest demographic of teens) is just too much.

Finally, we end with the delightfully bad replacement to the Pandora One Desktop App (Elpis). Now, I cannot say if this is solely an issue with this motherboard (or Elpis itself), but when using the app, it either does one of three things;
1. When playing the song, starts to skip it.
2. The song gets stuck in a loop and restarts itself at the start.
3. It works fine, then starts to skip the song.
All I do know…is I didn’t have this issue with my old hardware. I’ve been using the website for the music, and it’s been working just fine.

It does pain me to say no to this motherboard (since it’s my favorite color), but really…the issues aren’t worth it. I can’t have a CPU that’ll produce a stable heat output (or cause issues booting up my computer). And this motherboard won’t accept my choice of RAM setup.
They got to go. 😛

.
Another discussion happened in the Discord channel today, being told to “not get CPUs from 2012”, as they’re known to be too hot. Seems AMD didn’t even give a fuck about the 9590. Being told I should had gotten an i5 instead.
And then the discussion started to get heated with me VS a few people about Windows 10, and my “stubbornness” to refuse to upgrade. *sigh*… THIS can of worms again! What a mess. When I told them about the privacy concerns, one of them said “privacy was lost when the internet started.” And also saying about “telemetry was a thing since XP”….
I dunno. Maybe they’re right, and, what I’ve been thinking that I’m “fighting the good fight”, I might be fighting it alone. …Maybe…maybe I should just move on. I mean, it’s not like it’s going to kill me (or make me put thermal paste on something). …Mmmm. I’ll have to think about it. There are still a few people like me, who are still against 10 (and I do applaud them). But, how long will they last until they eventually ‘sell out’ and go with the flow?
And as for the forced updates, they brought up the WannaCry Worm (which isn’t affecting 10) and how Microsoft wanted people to update earlier OS’ as they were affected…yet, the fact it isn’t affecting 10, that proves WannaCry is a ploy to get people to go to 10! Though if it truly was a ploy, they wouldn’t even bother offering the updates (and lie saying “we don’t know how to stop this”).

All I know, is…ugh. Could everything I’ve been told about 10, just be from hate of what Microsoft did in the past (and not from how 10 is now)? The installer said I wouldn’t like 10 as “it’s not made for gaming”. Yet one of the people I talked to, claims he’s been with 10 for two years and “never had an issue”… I just DON’T KNOW!! It’s JUST like what I’ve gone through with this damn hardware!
…However, unlike hardware, I could install 10, try it out for a week. And if I don’t like it, I could go back to 7. I still have my Windows 7 x64 OEM copy. I could just buy a Windows 10 OEM copy off of Newegg (that’s typically around $100)…and just try it out. As the old saying goes; “you won’t know if you like it unless you try it”.

Hmm. I just might do that, guys. But it probably won’t be until maybe July. I would barely have enough next month to pay the installer to swap my hardware back.
Then I guess I could sell the parts on Craigslist or something (and then use that money to pay my mother back). Never done that before, but I know Tulsi used it to sell an old CPU once. The fact the parts would be like-new, I’m sure I would get most of what was paid for them.

“Hello darkness, my old friend… I’ve come to talk with you again.”

“You cou-ldn’t stop the beeeeep’ing, because it started beeee’ep’ing again! When I turrrrr-rrrrned on, MY COMPUTEEERRRR THIS AFTerrrr-noon! Oh woe is me… Why do I puuuuut uuuup, with this shit?!”

“Now I’m going to miss the meetuuuuup. I promised I would make it todayyyyy… because you had to FUCKING BEEP!! And the CPU OOOOVVVVer-heatiiiing! Why caaaaan’t YOUUUU..JUST FUCKING WORK IN my faaaavorrr?!? Oh who am I kiddiiiinggg? I should had NEVEEERRRRRR… upgradeeeeeddd!”

I thought I had it, guys. I thought I had a hold on this issue. But no… turned on my computer this afternoon, as normal.. and now my computer is beeping and pretending it’s a sheep again.
I’m now convinced there’s a flaw in this brand new motherboard. I don’t know who caused it, if it’s the guy that installed my hardware (by mistake)… or this CPU still. The CPU, it’s possible it could have a flaw in it (possibly from being in my old board).

I’m almost desperate enough to enlist Tulsi’s help here (like, maybe this Saturday), in removing the board to remove the cooler, to remove the CPU, and then replace it with my old 4350…and see if that fixes the *beep* issue. I KNEW it couldn’t be the RAM, because I never had an issue with it before! And frankly, this is pretty much the SAME type of board (and it supports the type of RAM I use, like my old board)!
So it’s got to be the CPU. Course, I could say this now, and then have the old CPU in there…and there’s still a chance it could beep again.

Reported to the thread. Sometime today, I should get my next course of action. Watch this space.

.
EDIT: Wow, that was fast. And the best thing of all, it ended with a facepalm (of the guy saying “I told you the CPU was leaking heat”). It’s the CPU. I knew it was from the start. I have no business owning it.
So this is the “temp fix”. Not the fix I was looking for, but it seems it’s the only way now.

So…I seems that’s that, guys. There’s really nothing else I can do about this. I’ve done everything that MVP Bluntman(guy on the E:D Discovery Discord) and I have thought of. There’s no point in responding to the thread now (even though I did and made myself look like a dumbass (as usual) by saying Newegg needs to post better info for people who aren’t tech-savvy (such as “this CPU requires watercooling”).
Would be a great title for that one thing I’ve seen on Youtube, of “If X was honest with us”. “If PC Hardware Manufactures were honest with us.” I can just see the episode now. AMD would be talking about the 9590, and it’s on fire.. literally, and they have to use a fire extinguisher on it…and it isn’t stopping the fire because the fucking thing can’t cool itself down! Haha..oh god, make it happen.

Anyway, I’m faced with two options;
1. Deal with the beeping (and the potential risk of permanent damage to the hardware of it continuously shutting itself down during POST), and use my computer for gaming the best I can (until June), when I’m able to get my old hardware back in..and say FUCK YOU to this problem once and for all!!
2. Do the above, by myself (AHAHAHAHA…no).

There’s also another expensive threat (that has to wait ’till June). And that was the fact Bluntman is away seeing his father at the hospital and I’m on my own again (so I ask the Discord server for help again. They asked for my PSU, and I told them thinking “ehh, this shouldn’t be a problem” until I also added “I had it for many years”. Then reality hits me with a pile of bricks (ouch) and tells me that even though it’s a 650W…the output is degrading with time. I don’t even remember when I bought it, but I’m guessing around 2011 (so it isn’t that old, if that’s when I bought it).
Still, I got enough on my plate. I don’t need a potentially failing PSU to be added to it!
Basically, they’re thinking the CPU could be asking too much of my power… no shit, that’s what the thread’s telling me! That’s why I’m getting the beeps!

The conversion continued on, with Dezent chipping in and explaining of an option mentioned to him for me (of lowering the number of cores to 4 or 6). I still remember when I asked the FTB Discord if this is a valid thing to do for Modded Minecraft, and they said “you don’t”; aka “you can’t change the number of cores”. Clearly this was false, as there is (through Windows). Dezent showed me where to go, and I lowered it to 6. If this would fix the beeping (when I leave it off and go to bed), I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
You know me, though..I have my doubts. I feel that having less cores is actually harder on the CPU (as it can’t spread its workload as evenly).
But I’ve decided to try a stress test with the 6-cored CPU, with 22x Multiplier and 1.4V CPU VID. Will run it for 30 minutes and see if I get that spike I saw yesterday at the 15 minute mark. If the CPU behaves OK in 30 minutes, I’ll play around with the settings some more and see just how much juice I can get out of this thing (while keeping temps below 61*C).

25 minutes later, and the results are in. The fact it stayed below 60*C at 22x Multiplier (where it did the exact opposite yesterday) is quite impressive. However, I noticed something that proved even more that this CPU is quite unpredictable. I decided to let it run past 25 minutes (when it started to cool itself down), and it was a good thing as I would had never had noticed the CPU suddenly spiking to 60, and then going back down to 54*C.
Heh, when you think you have it under control, it says “NOPE” and does this. I knew it didn’t matter how many cores I’m limiting, as the CPU just won’t play nice. The fact I had to underclock it (with only 6 cores) is crazy enough.

So now we go over the second option, of instead of waiting ’till June of doing the work myself (and save some money). If installing hardware was as easy as installing Windows, then..well, for one the installer would be out of a job, but at least it’ll be a lot easier.
Sadly, it’s not like this, and I’m forced to overcome my fear with thermal paste. But that’s a joke of itself (and I definitely proved it infront of Tulsi). Basically, I have this irrational, uncontrollable fear of getting something unfamiliar to me on my fingers, and feeling like I can’t get it off (no matter how much I wash my hands). This is especially true with thermal paste (due to the warnings about not getting it on skin (or eat it). Hell, I’m even scared of picking up a tube of the stuff (thinking it has residue that’ll get on my fingers).
I decided to try to clean the paste off of the stock cooler. Took 6 paper towels and folded them up in a square shape. I made five slow swipes with as much elbow grease as I can get down on it. It only removed a quarter of it, and I think I see paste on the radiator.
Went into the bathroom and vigorously scrubbed my fingers to get off any residue. Checked them afterwords, and the ‘panic alarm’ in my head started ringing as I could’ve sworn I saw gray on my left thumb. Scrub it again and look…and it’s still there. I couldn’t tell if it was paste or a vein. Went back to my computer, freaking out at Tulsi who thought I went insane or something. All and all, it turns out I was worried about nothing as I never got paste on my fingers. Yet I still have a fear that I do.
Can’t really blame him, but I hope you guys can’t really blame me. I’ll probably freak the fuck out if someone purposely put thermal paste on my finger.

Anyway, getting ready to shut down for the night. I’ll be making yet another post tomorrow to post my results.

“..I say beep beep I’m a– NO!! Get FIXED, damn you! :D”

I’ll spare you guys the drama that I’ve said for the past 2-3 weeks so far, and just get right down to what’s been said (and what I’ve done).
This morning, I went to turn it on, and it took several attempts to turn it on (without it turning itself back off or beeping and then turning itself back off) until I got it to stay on.
The guy I spoke to is back from his family emergency, and good timing as I needed his help to tell me what to overclock my RAM, He didn’t understand why I even needed to do that. More responses came in (asking if there’s any error messages showing up when it’s beeping), and I explained what happened when I turned it on (and told them there were no errors).

Decided to go back to BIOS and take about 5 pictures of what I was seeing, and then upload them to the thread. Since then, the responses stopped coming in (for a good three hours). I started to get really annoyed, not being able to do anything about this issue. It’s like they saw my issue as a low priority. Tomorrow’s another meetup in E:D, and I’m going to miss it if I don’t do something (and make this CPU stable)!!
And ‘something’ I did. I unplugged my computer, laid it on my bed, and removed the two sticks of RAM I bought four months ago to make it 16GB. I put the sticks in a sandwich bag, to keep the dust off of them.
When plugging everything up, I decided to only plug in the essentials (keyboard/mouse/monitors/power). Went into BIOS to verify I was back to 8GB, and I was. Booted normally into Windows. With no internet connection, I shut down my computer and waited the minute.
Turned it back on…… NO BEEPS!!! 😮 FUUUCCCKKK YEEEEESSSSS!!!! FINALLY, I had a handle on the issue! Unfortunately, I’m stuck with 8GB ’till June. Tulsi is acting like 8GB is the norm..heh, not from what I’ve been told on the FTB Forum.
So this is great! It’s not beeping like a sheep anymore! Problem..SOLVED!! 😀

All there’s left to do now, is test the CPU (and get the temp stabilized for long-term gaming sessions). I re-used the settings I got yesterday(the fact I didn’t set them in BIOS, they got reset in AMD OverDrive) and ran the test, yet it seemed everytime the 15 minute mark hit, the CPU spiked in temp quite quickly into the mid 60’s. The only setting that seems to have worked, is 21x Multiplier, and 1.4V. When it spiked, it hit 60 but then started bouncing between 59-60 (and eventually leveling at 59*C). When the 25 minute hit and the test was completed (and I got my picture), I noticed the temp…actually going backwards (all the way to 52*C by the time I stopped the test).
Reported my results to the thread (including the picture), then started working on this very blog post. 10 minutes later, there’s a response questioning of why did I stop the test halfway. This was my bad for not resetting HWMonitor’s high/low display during the multiple testing I was doing. Guy I’ve been talking to, explained the situation for me.

Now I have to wait ’till tomorrow (as everyone has gone to bed), to hopefully know my next move in coming up with a temp fix (until I can do something in June)..aka, getting the 9590 out and getting my 4350 back in. Hell, with the incompatibility that I can’t have the 4x 4GB setup, I don’t want this motherboard (until I’m able to afford something that will). I want the 16GB I paid for, damnit!
However, there’s a 50/50 chance that the two sticks of RAM I took out, are now ruined when they went in the sandwich bag……as I’ve been told that plastic bags are known to have static. x_x FUCK!!!
JUST…GREAT!! I’m tempted to switch the RAM that’s currently in my computer, with these sticks in the bag (to see if this is the truth, and if I just lost a perfectly working $50 pair of RAM sticks due to not knowing). Tulsi claims it should be perfectly fine for the RAM to be in the bag.

More and more bad news, more testing tomorrow

I’m at my wit’s end here, guys. Though, I’ve been at this level for a pretty long time. But it’s gotten worse as to the times I have to turn my computer back on. I..almost feel like crying. Because, now it’s no longer the CPU…it’s something else.

The Overclockers forum thread I made, set the scene for today. Instead of giving me some news that could benefit me, they turned into Intel fanboys. With responses ranging from “the FX 8350 alone is barely enough for that cooler”, to “the 9590 is no better than your 4350 for single-threading”. Even one saying to “stay away from the FX series”.

This is beyond ‘punch my head into a wall until the bad news goes away’. I’ve nearly thought of suicide. Though I’m not going down that road. But, that’s how bad it’s gotten.
Tried resetting my BIOS today, and there was no option to reset to the factory defaults..infact I don’t even think there is such a thing as ‘factory defaults’ with this motherboard(reason coming soon). And after a lot of hesitation, I was forced to unplug my computer, open it up, ground myself, and reach in to hit the Reset CMOS button. After I re-hooked everything back up, I literally prayed to God that my computer would boot normally (as this is all I’ve got.. I don’t have a backup computer to fall back to).
Counted 10 seconds, and hit the power button with my eyes closed, finger shaking… and it booted with no beeps! BIOS came up unexpectedly, telling me CMOS was reset and offered me three options; ‘load the optimized defaults and boot’, ‘load the optimized defaults and reboot’, or go into BIOS. I picked the 3rd option, then saved and exited. Computer booted into Windows just fine.
‘Optimized Defaults’? That’s not factory settings. That sounds like it’s going to look at my hardware and determine what is the best settings for it. Well, that’s my guess. Either that, or it’ll use its defaults. Seeing how I’m as nervous as a cat VS a vacuum cleaner, I didn’t want to mess with it. Why make something that’s broken in my computer, worse?

With CMOS resetted, it also unregistered Windows. My genuine key would not be accepted, so I had to use the phone thing of calling a special number, telling them every number in these 8 ‘blocks’ of 6 numbers to get an activation code (that’s in the same format). They have a new thing of using a smart phone to access a website, of typing in the numbers. Yet everytime I attempted (even quadruple-checking to make sure every number was correct), I was ultimately forced to contact their support as everytime I attempted, the fucking thing said the code was invalid. So I spoke to someone (who could barely speak fluent English) and gave him the code. This, somehow, worked..and I was able to get the activation code.
With Windows now re-activated, I tried to shut down and restart a minute later (just to see if resetting the CMOS helped)….and, it didn’t. This time, I got ‘*beep*…*beep*…*beep*(computer turns itself off), another one of that of the second attempt, and on the 3rd time it worked fine with no beeps.
The guy says it now could be an issue with my RAM. The fact the installer said how the CPU Cooler had barely fit over my RAM, well..it’s possible he may’ve bent one of the sticks by accident while installing the cooler. But when I was about to reset CMOS, I looked at the RAM closely.. and it looked just fine. I didn’t see any signs of the sticks being bent or not seated properly… you know, I think I’m done saying “I don’t know”.

I’m sick of life right now. All I wanted to do, was a SIMPLE UPGRADE of my CPU to make several games run better. But NOOOOOOO!! I can’t fucking do that anymore, because of the assholes at Microsoft pushing Windows 10 down our throats!
I’m almost tempted at this time, to scream out “FUCK PRIVACY” and upgrade! Maybe losing my privacy would be fucking WORTH IT in order to upgrade (and have my computer work right)!

Let’s face it, people.. if I never listened to Tulsi (and just listened to this guy who said I needed an Intel), I probably (yet this is also not a guarantee) would not be in this mess right now. But I don’t blame him, as it was his friends who told him this (so the blame goes to them instead).
All I know, is I’m going to be stuck with these parts. Because by the time I save up to afford the original hardware I was supposed to get, the RMA chance will have long expired. Speaking of Tulsi, he did offer to be that ‘person on my shoulder’ to help me build a computer. But it will never work, as my phone turns its screen off (and I can’t just tape my phone to my shirt or something to remain hands-free during the process).
I wonder if there is such a thing as an online PC building school for adults, that could teach me how to get over my fears of screwing up. If they could send me a ‘test PC’….something that isn’t mine (with my actual computer going) and walk me through the steps of building. Perhaps, doing that a few times, I would have the courage to ‘perform surgery’ on my computer.
But that’s not going to help me in the short-term. I need to get my old hardware back in, and fucking FORGET about ever upgrading. It can’t be done in this day and age. And as I said before, even if I was to get these parts that I originally was supposed to get, there’s no guarantee that this won’t explode in my face as well.

.
So it’s the evening hours, and things are..well, kind of looking better, I guess? In ways, it tries to look promising. And in others, I wish I could get over my fear and get the old hardware back in my computer (as I’ve reached the ceiling of what I can upgrade to, for Windows 7).
The guy I’ve been speaking to, he made a response to the thread before he had to leave to deal with a family emergency (and hasn’t responded since). As for me, I’m now being told to give them some info (screenshots of while I’m testing) to determine my next move. It’s possible (the fact I’m getting three beeps when turning my computer on) the current RAM configuration I have, may not be compatible with the motherboard (as the guy thought it would). I may have to get a single 2x 8GB pack to replace what I got (which means..more money that I don’t have right now).
One positive note, is at least I won’t need an installer to do it for me when June comes.

Tomorrow, I’m going to run some more tests (with somewhat higher settings). It would had actually been tonight, except the main person who’s telling me what things I should underclock (and how much) has gone to bed. Though, this test is going to be very…let’s say limiting to my monitor’s resolution. They want me to keep open three instances of CPU-Z (to monitor the CPU/Memory/SPD), a window of HWMonitor, and then finally a window of Prime95. I barely was able to get all three instances of CPU-Z to fit in my primary screen.
The reason being, I have to take pictures of the beginning and the end of this half an hour test (through ‘Blend’). They told me if it passes the test (and stays below 60*C), the CPU will be stable enough for gaming. This time, they tell me I need to overclock my RAM. I need to be told where in BIOS to set this figure to run the test. But as I said earlier, the guy went to bed before I could learn.

I’m quite nervous. I know it passed the Blend test before with absolutely no issue..but I was using lower settings. Welp, I’ll be posting the results..I hope (if my computer doesn’t decide to no longer boot anymore because of this). But a CMOS reset should fix the problem, if that happens.

“Did you even read the OP?” / repeating patterns / reality testing

I’m honestly at a loss of what to title this one, as so many things happened. First off, my earbuds I use at night, the right one is starting to die on me(putting most of the music into my left ear)…will the money spending EVER END?!

With that said, it’s time to start the main show. Remember when I said I was going to make a thread in the Linus Tech Tips forum, trying to look for answers of why my computer isn’t booting up the first time I turn it on?
I did, but I didn’t get the quick response I got with my last thread. Though, two things are suspected there;
1. It’s night.
2. Tomorrow’s another work week.

I did get one response, asking if I reinstalled Windows. Heh..did I reinstall? I was forced to, pal. Yet the guy had also quoted my entire post for no reason. I really dislike people that do that (quote the OP and then post a low to no-effort response).
Another guy tells the last guy to not quote, yet doesn’t bother responding to me about my issue. I’m forced to say something like “is the 9590 a bit too powerful?”
The guy responded, with startling news….saying the cooler I have now, isn’t enough for it. Yet, it’s like he never read where I said it was underclocked so it would be enough for it.

The other guy I’ve been talking to, wasn’t surprised to hear how he feels like he fucked up yet again. It seems the only way to properly cool a 9590 is through watercooling. I guess this proves going back to the 4350 until I can get a CPU that can support not just my hardware (but the way I can cool it), is the best thing to do.
Unfortunately, it won’t be as easy as removing the cooler to access the CPU, as the cooler has a backplate…requiring me to remove the motherboard to access. NOPE! Yet I fear by saying that, I would be ignoring the risk of maybe possible further damage to my hardware of my computer turning itself off during POST.
And another thing I just remembered…the window to RMA the CPU is closing quite rapidly (the 30 days since I got the original hardware). If I don’t do something soon, I’ll be officially stuck with it.

Moving on, still discussing the issue, I got linked to another forum called Overclockers.net, telling me to try them and see what they say. So I do, I make my first post as the issue in the specific AMD section.
Got a response, also saying the cooler won’t support the full power of the CPU, and suggesting I downgrade to this ‘8320E’ CPU…again, the person NEVER read the fact I said I had underclocked the damn thing(I even put it in as the thread title). Read the OP fully, people! Stop being lazy and TL;DRing!

.
After that, I tried completely shutting down and restarting my computer again (after slightly adjusting a setting though AMD OverDrive). This time, it took 7 attempts to boot correctly. However, I’m beginning to see a pattern emerging. The initial time I turn on my computer, it shuts down a half a second later. Second time, it’s two beeps and shuts off, and then it repeats every time I hit the power button.
And it seems, the only way to break this chain is to quickly hit the power button a second after it shuts down. So far I only discovered this when it beeps and does it. Again, it could be a random thing.
I’m starting to think that there might be a short either in the cables or the motherboard. But before I put the blame on the guy who installed the hardware, I’m going to try to reset BIOS. If it doesn’t happen, then clearly it’s an issue I (and the guy that helped me) created. But if it does…then either the underclocking caused permanent damage to the motherboard, or the guy didn’t do something right. Either one of those things aren’t good for me (especially the ‘permanent damage’ thing).
I personally feel, it is an issue with BIOS. And even if it is, that’s still not good for me (as that will prove I have no business owning the 9590). But with no money to pay to make the switch back to the 4350 (of this month), I…I dunno what I’m going to do.

.
I did however report my findings to the Overclocker forum post I made, hoping this one would be more useful to me. But then I decided to try the Java-based games and see how the CPU reacts to a ‘real world environment’.
The first test was with Wurm. I got an FPS of around 40-50 almost everywhere, but no sudden drop in FPS as before (with the old motherboard). As for the CPU temps, they…well, how does 28*C on load sound? Unfuckingbelievable? Yeah, I agree. It feels too cool. Though, Core Temp is probably reading the wrong sensor (like all of these other ones). But even still..yeah, something’s definitely not right here.

Minecraft, gave me slightly higher temps in the 30’s (and a lower FPS at my base). The FPS never got past 30 (even with Optifine), which is quite questionable (with Core Temp showing the core speed was going at 4017.76Mhz all of that time). It’s almost that the underclocking caused more harm than good for single-threaded games. Rather upsetting indeed. I can almost hear the FTB Discord saying “HA-ha! TOLD you that CPU is pathetic on single-threading! You should had gone Intel, brah!”
Well, at least here, too, the FPS ‘throttling’ is gone. So, it’s not bad..but it’s not good either. I don’t think I’ll ever see an FPS in the 70’s until I undo the underclocking (which will cause temps to go highly unstable).

With these two showing nearly the same FPS (and similar core temps), I’m getting worried that non Java-based games will be the same way. Because, even with the ‘throttling’ in Minecraft and Wurm, it somehow made the other games I have to run smoother. Guess I could try ED and check its FPS.
The temps alone, baffle me. How could it be that cool, when I had much higher temps when I was stress testing with Prime95? Is it because not all cores are at 100% usage? It almost makes me wonder if I should try to undo the underclocking and see what happens. Of course, the ‘worst that could happen’ is potential damage to the CPU.

And that’s all there is to say. I’ll be back tomorrow to report more findings (and if I get a response in both threads I made).

Fix one problem, create a more serious one (and then some)

All day, my mind has been filled with emotions (and none of them were happy or joyful). Because now I have a new more serious threat (that is likely not as easily to fix..as it also affects the first issue).
12:30pm, I was going to run the ‘Blended’ test for two hours. Tried to turn my computer on, and it turned itself back off within half a second. Tried it again, and I started to hear “*beep*…*beep*…*beep*…*beep*…*beep*(like, two beeps a second, then turned itself off again). Sometimes it was two beeps until it turned off. My fear went through the roof, trying to figure out what the hell did I do to deserve this.
After the forth time, I heard ten of these beeps..but thankfully my computer went through POST and booted normally. Then I had another issue where Discord and Skype acted like I wasn’t connected to the internet(which I clearly was). Firefox works fine. Did a speedtest to prove I had a connection, and I believe this is what finally made the two connect properly.
So, first I have temporarily fixed the overheating issue, and now I have an issue with CMOS (according to the person I spoke to yesterday). Apparently, the motherboard doesn’t like the settings made for the CPU to work properly.

The ‘Blended’ test, passed with flying colors. The temp stayed in the 50’s(with the highest being around 56-57). That’s great. But with this new fear, I cannot celebrate…as I’m forced to undo the changes I made to the CPU(to get it to this point), just to get my motherboard not to bitch at me.
A restart works just fine. It’s only when I completely shut it down and restart is when I have the computer shutting itself back down.

Talked it over with the person, and he suggested I try this thing (after resetting BIOS back to its factory defaults). This thing is basically BIOS, but in Windows. I can set the clock speed and everything. The only thing I can’t do (with this program) is disable ‘cool and quiet’ and all of this other stuff. I can disable the turbo boost, but that’s it.
Though I feel, why even bother? If I reset it, and then set it back…the problem will come back. And you know what this means? Hours upon hours of literally doing what someone who has made their own modpack in Minecraft (and they’re having an issue with a particular mod that’s affecting the entire thing) has to do; install one mod at a time. In my case, I have to set a setting, check to see if that setting is “OK” with my motherboard, and then run a heat test to see if I can solve both issues.
And this, is NOT fucking worth the effort! I shouldn’t even be having to go through all of this hell.

Because of this, the person is out of ideas for me. All he suggests is maybe I downgrade to the 8350, and then RMA the 9590. I feel I should downgrade to my old 4350 and RMA the 9590 (as I will be stuck with it for the rest of my life).
Though I feel my best option is to go to Linus Tech Tips and ask in their forum, of what should be my next move. Clearly I need advanced help to give me an answer(hopefully one I can stomach).

.
On top of that, and when I feel like the entire world is against me, I’m brought back down to reality of something that is beyond my control. I often forget of one important rule; “it could always be worse.” I often push real life aside, feeling it’s not really that important to me. But sometimes, I’m forced to stop ignoring it and listen.
And what my mother told me, is one of those times. My father tried to commit suicide the day before he took me up to get this latest hardware installed. He’s hurting all over, yet refuses to go up to the doctor. And now my mother and I will have to go on ‘suicide watch’ to make sure he doesn’t do the unthinkable. He’s also not wanting to eat or drink, so he’s trying to starve himself to death.
This is just great. Here I felt what I was going through was pretty bad, and now I have this far more important thing to think about. There are truly more important things to worry about, than a stupid CPU that won’t play nice with me.
This…this CPU means nothing compared to keeping my parents alive, as I depend on them greatly (especially my father).

I keep hoping everything will stay the same, so I can just ignore real life. But I know I cannot ignore it forever (as life truly does suck).

The good, The bad, and The overheating bastard

What a day, what a day. So, the new parts kind of helped with the CPU overheating(aka no more of it being underpowered), but I still have to worry about it overheating. But thanks to one of the two that recommended said parts, we seem to finally have control over it.

Yesterday started with the guy not answering the phone until 5 minutes after he opened. Took the parts and my computer up to him, and he said how he’ll try to get to it today as he has three computers to work on ahead of me. Though he got done with it two hours after I took it in.
Back at the shop, I made sure everything I gave to him came back with me. He’s telling me he barely got the CPU Cooler in, stating that it’s “a centimeter away” from my RAM. So I could see if I ever decide to get a 2x 16GB setup, that I’ll have to remove the cooler. But by then, I think I’m going to do that myself (even re-apply the thermal paste).

I saw the shiny back panel of the new motherboard when I got it home. All of the icons are in red(my favorite color). At the time, I felt this new motherboard and I are going to have a beautiful friendship. And the LEDs (though I can’t really see them due to my computer desk) are pretty nice). Though IMO, they kind of clash with the blue glow of the case fans’ LEDs.

Got the computer hooked up and booted. Saw the new Gigabite POST screen, then it tried to run Windows and BSOD’ed..clearly I got to reinstall Windows (again). Fine with me. Trying to find the C drive was a bit more challenging, showing my D drive as being ‘Disk 0’ (as BIOS treats an SSD as not a traditional boot device). If it wasn’t for remembering my C is the smallest drive, I think I would had wiped out the wrong one.
Now, I don’t know if formatting an SSD is a good idea, but luckily there was a Delete option to clear the old instance of Windows.
So I got Windows up, and I noticed..my external drive isn’t working (as in, the guy forgot to hook up the cables to make the front USB ports work(which I usually have it plugged in)). I tried everything I could think of; installing USB drivers and stuff like that, but it just wouldn’t turn on. Thought of plugging the two cables in the back (which is unusual to me). This turned on the drive, but Windows was listing it as an ‘Unknown Device’.
After much troubleshooting, I discovered (on my own), the cables have to be plugged into the special yellow USB ports (I assume data ports), and that did the trick! Was able to fully access all of my stuff.

Another fun time was after downloading 224 Windows Updates. The computer rebooted twice, then went black screen for a good 10 minutes. Finally I had..somewhat of a picture, of a light blue screen. “Oh fuck” I’m thinking, of if one of the updates may’ve messed up with the driver installs on the disc. Manually turning it off from the back, telling Windows to run normally..wasn’t fixing it. What the FUCK have I done?!
Turns out, this was a major DERP on my part! I had completely forgotten that among the updates, is a driver to make my GPU take over for graphics. And the way I have my monitors setup (with my secondary being the only HDMI monitor for my PS4), Windows assumes my secondary is my primary..and vica versa. Easily corrected the problem in Nvidia’s settings. Thank goodness it was that easy!! I seriously felt I fucked up (especially how the guy said he’s never dealt with this kind of motherboard before). Wow. What a DERP that was! Heh.

With that “issue” out of the way, I started getting Firefox installed (this time I remembered what plugins I used) and others of the sort. Got Skype on to tell Tulsi of what happened, and went to get the stress test software I used before (to see if the new hardware was worth it).
Tried it out with some hesitation. The temp slowly started to go up..into the 70’s. It went up to 78, and then, suddenly……my computer turned itself off. The sudden shock of seeing it turn off, quickly turned to anger and frustration. Tried to turn it back on. Computer goes into BIOS, then freezes and turns itself off again. The anger starts to reach its boiling point as I wait a minute to let the CPU cool down. Turn it on again, this time it stays on.
Told Tulsi the bad news, and…I don’t know what’s up with that kid, but he’s been having an attitude against me. Instead of offering to help, all he says is “rip”. He even said “lmao” one time. I was furious enough with what just happened, and I don’t need this. He kept avoiding my question of why did he laugh at me. Was nearly forced to defriend him….now I know it’s a childish thing to do, but HE was the one being childish here. Plus it seems to be the only thing I can use against him(to make him talk and stop making a bad thing worse)..I swear, he has no sympathy.

…Anyway, I got ahold of one of the two that recommended the parts to me (on Discord), who does have sympathy. He wasn’t surprised it was overheating, telling me the 9590 is “a pretty hot CPU”. But all I could think of is “You TOLD ME this cooler WOULD WORK!! IT’S NOT!! IT’S WORSE THAN IT WAS!!!”
He suggested that I ‘underclock’ the CPU (the same as overclocking, but in reverse) by lowering the power it draws, would make it not heat up as fast. I tried everything he told me to (giving him lots of pictures of my BIOS settings), and guys…I THINK WE GOT IT!!! 😀 Lowering the voltage of the CPU(currently have it set to 1.36V), is definitely showing a difference in temperature!
I’m also running a new (to me) stress tester, called Prime95. It’s open source(which means it’s freeware..the best kind of ware), it takes less space than AIDA64 Extreme, and does some pretty good testing. An hour ago, I just got done running a near 4 hour test, and at its highest temp…the CPU hit 60*C. That, is AMAZING!! 😀
However, testing isn’t done yet (for that was the ‘light’ test. The true test of this software will happen sometime in the afternoon today, where I must run a two hour stability test.
If the temp stays below 64*C for that long(though I’m hoping below 61*C), then I got it and it’s ready for gaming. If it fails, then the voltage will have to be tweaked some more.

There’s a reason why I’m currently running on a limited setup here (haven’t installed everything on my computer). If the CPU continues to fail to maintain a safe temp, then I will be forced to RMA it and get my old 4350 back in(just incase I have to reinstall Windows). But that time, I won’t be coming to the guy. I’ll probably have to ask mister no sympathy to help me with removing the CPU Cooler and stuff like that.
I really hope it doesn’t come to that, and the CPU passes with flying colors. I finally got it at a safe temp (and left it running for nearly four hours at 100% usage). So…PLEASE pass the real test, CPU! I realize that it’s quite rare to use a fan cooler on something so powerful, but I beg you….work with me.

Will tomorrow fix my CPU’s overheating issue?

Tomorrow’s the day I get the new motherboard and CPU Cooler installed, and I feel there’s a 50/50 chance. Constantly I got told that Minecraft only uses ‘one thread'(which I assume one core). Plus, I’m told the CPU core speed is the most important when it comes to Minecraft (instead of the number of cores).

However, I’ve been thinking, and I dare the Modded Minecraft Discord to answer this. The old 4350 I had for many years, I never had an issue like this. So, with that said, why am I having one with a better CPU (if it’s a single-threading issue)?
And so I did dare them to ask it, and the response…was the response I’ve been waiting for many, MANY days of unexplained grief. One of them gave me a link to a chart, showing every CPU (since the Intel Celeron (and the AMD Athlon) era) that supports single-threading.
Both of my CPUs are listed in this. And the one on top, that is 210 better(in the list of benchmarks)? .. THE 9590!! 😀

HOT DAMN!! This PROVES it’s a thermal throttling(and underpowering) issue!! So this proves, the better motherboard (and the CPU Cooler) will work…and I’ll finally be able to play Minecraft (with a smooth FPS) again! YAY!! 😀

Now I cannot wait. I have so much catching up to do. So yes, to answer the question of will it work, it should.

Karma is truly a ditch!

Hi, I’m a typical Thursday morning! Oh, what’s that at the door!? Why it’s your parts, coming a day early! Open the box, ooh, shiny new red motherboard and CPU Cooler (that better fit this time)! Surely the tech guy could get them in before Satur– ohh.. he can’t? Wait.. MONDAY morning he’ll get them in?! IS HE SERIOUS?! Ok, he set it to Saturday morning.
Guess that’s better. Could still change to Monday. Guess you should tell the LST you won’t make it for the meetup (as you’ll be too busy reinstalling everything.. again).
….

Karma sucks, man. Here I was planning on the off-chance he wouldn’t be able to do it Friday (as the parts were supposed to come tomorrow, but they decided to give it to me a day earlier). So I figure he would possibly do it Saturday (which is the same day I go to the grocery store (typically is Sunday, but it’s going to be a washout with really heavy rain..not the best weather to be driving in)).
So, yeah. But at least it beats either having to wait ’till June, or ’till September.
There’s one thing I gotta say, though, and that’s the wording of the box the CPU Cooler is in. On one side of it, I don’t like how it’s using words like “Extreme Efficiency” and “Infinite RAM Compatibility”…come ON, enough with the “I’m a gamer, look at the size of my RAM, baby” lingo! I get that silly shit enough with Discord everytime I boot it up.

So anyway, I’ve also been thinking, and contemplating about installing the hardware myself (which would officially be my first ever PC build). There are detailed step-by-step tutorials on Youtube, teaching beginners (like myself) of how to build a PC. But since how hardware and towers vary from system to system, I doubt any of them would be able to help me.
What I need is a hands-on approach. Aka, someone standing over my shoulder IRL and making sure I’m doing it right the first time.
No one in my family knows how to build a computer.. which leaves me with very little knowledge. I mean, I know how to install RAM and a GPU, but I’ve never installed a motherboard (or installed the CPU) and then make sure all the cables are in the right holes (plus there’s also the ‘fun’ task of cable management).
I’ve seen enough tutorials to get the idea to install the CPU (lifting a few levers to access it, making sure the arrow on the motherboard matches the arrow on the CPU (for proper install), how to grab the CPU (green is good, pins are bad, white top is also bad), gently place it in and give it a little wiggle to make sure its in, then put the levers back in place.

Thermal Paste (before adding the cooler) is another thing. The application seems to vary (and this has suspicions of being the reason why my CPU is overheating). One person tells you to put a little paste in the middle, gently making a circle for about 10 seconds..while another tells you to start from the top of the CPU, and run a thin line of paste down the middle(’till it reaches the bottom). Which one is the correct application? Does it even matter? ..Did I even buy good thermal paste? I mean the guy said it’s “not good”.

But the cooler, here I was watching a video about this guy teaching his hot wife how to build a computer (while drunk out of his mind)…and the wife had to use, what I could describe as an Erector Set wrench! SERIOUSLY?! Building a PC is an adult job, and you give us a TOY WRENCH to install a CPU Cooler?!?! Wow. Just, wow.

Anyway, I dunno. Just thinking out loud. Plus it’s only a few days until I have it done professionally (but even that, I’m starting to question..since this overheating issue started).
Building a PC(or doing nothing), may be my only option in the near future.
