It’s going to be a LONG three months, and yet…

…I’m still having my doubts if getting a replacement board is going to be enough. The guy that tried to make amends, claims a board that will support the CPU, I would be “rocking at 4.7GHz” and “it won’t matter if it’s single or multi-threaded”.
Yet I can’t help but doubt those claims, so much. I doubt it’s going to be that easy, with what I was told that less cores is better for Minecraft. Yet, if this ‘throttling’ didn’t occur.. well, I dunno. I think the CPU would overheat if it didn’t.
A board that supported the chip, would have the means of dealing with this. My current board, does not. I can’t stop its power saving features. …However, and I just had this thought, I wonder if that’s even responsible for that. Could it be the motherboard is smart enough to know the chip will overheat, and is preventing it? In my testing, it happens everytime the temp rises.
The other thing could be possible as well, as the motherboard doesn’t have enough power for the CPU. Yet in turn, is keeping the CPU from overheating. So both things could be on the table. And the only real way to know for sure, is with that better (taller) cooler.
If I could keep myself from having to replace the motherboard, I would be so happy.

At least the good thing about this, is I have three months of debating my emotions. It’s not healthy, but…hopefully I can think of something to make both things work in my favor.

In any case, I had to get back up to the computer part install guy to retrieve the thermal paste (he forgot to include it when I was paying for his services). When I got it, I could had sworn he said the paste “isn’t that good”. Before I left, he said if I got the planned CPU Cooler, he would install it for free. Probably feels obligated to do it as he couldn’t get the other one in.

*sigh*
Gonna be a long three months of feeling unsure.

.
EDIT: It seems fortune has smiled on me again. Well, first it smiled, then spat in my face. Haha.. fortune. Great sense of humor!
Now first off, I actually found some money lying around (a whole lotta money), which is allowing me to afford a new motherboard and CPU Cooler. Was talking to Dezent about my issues ’till we got down to suggesting motherboards, and he suggested this board (with the other one suggesting the same thing). It looks really nice, and it supports overclocking. Now you know me, I don’t do that. But I’m being told a 9590 is a factory overclocked 8350 (which is why it’ll need the extra boost in power).
Before I was preparing to purchase, I asked them both “are you sure this would absolutely, positively, fix my issue?” One said “yes” while the other said “mostly it will”. I’m tired of this, guys. This HAS to work!

Ok.. now, a bit of a side-note before I continue, some of you have emailed me and suggested I get the free trial of Newegg Premier (as I could cancel it at anytime). First I asked Newegg Support if I could even try for it, and was told yes. So I did, but I got concerned when it was asking me about payment (and acting like it was going to charge me).
Afterwards, I asked “will I be initially charged for this”, and I was told “no”. Ok, that’s good. All is great in the world. Had to wait a half an hour, and it was finally processed.

Looked for a way to cancel the auto-renew, and didn’t see one. I remember the last one telling me I could contact them and have them cancel the thing…but when I did, the person canceled the service instead of the auto-renew. I’m all “wait WHAT?! No! I wanted the auto-renew canceled, not the Premier service!” And they’re all “sorry, sorry!” and telling me that..I had been ‘refunded’ and it would take 1-2 business days.
I curiously ask “uh, wait. There shouldn’t be a refund as I didn’t pay anything”. But surprise surprise, the sleazeballs lied to me and charged me $19.99!
OOOOOOH did I let them HAVE IT!! D:( PLUS the bitch is trying to make it all better by offering a free 3-month subscription. NO!! FUCK you, and FUCK YOUR SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE!! YOUALL LIED TO ME, YOU FAGGOTS!!! NO amount of ‘free premium service’ is going to make up for that! I felt like they would be lying about that too! I came close to cussing at them, but didn’t really.
I can’t believe they lied right to my face!! I should had demanded I spoke to their manager, and had the one that lied to me, FIRED! Or even better, threatened them with the BBB..actually no, since they’re going to refund the money they stole from me, I can’t do that.

But now, I’m fighting my emotions if it’s even worth doing business with Newegg again. As I just said, they’re going to refund the $19.99, which is good.. but to LIE and say I WON’T be charged?!
You wanna make up for it, Newegg? Free two day shipping on these parts! That is the ONLY reason I signed up for it!

.
EDIT2: Woo! 😀 That was FUN, blowing off some serious steam! Fortune has apologized to me for spitting in my face, and gave me a smile. In the case of Me VS Newegg, a resolution has been given. Well, I wouldn’t really call it one, but.. what was left of the ‘free trial’, I was able to get free 3-day shipping.
As for why I got charged in the first place, I didn’t really get an answer from them. But, this to me, makes up for it (especially when my new board/CPU Cooler arrives this Friday instead of making me wait a week). Sadly, it took nearly all the money I had and I don’t have enough for the computer install guy. So..heh heh, I still have to wait ’till next month!
Oh well. Oh, one other thing I forgot to say. Back to the whole Newegg thing. I asked the person to do one more thing for me, and that’s to clarify the ‘free trial’ thing for future customers. The person acts like I’m going to be spearheading this new change, which is..interesting to say the least.

So.. uh.. Viva Revolution of not falling for ‘free trial’ gimmicks(even from reputable websites)?! Sure, let’s go with that!!

When all hope feels lost…

…something happens (technically) in your favor. The main story, is (with help), I finally was able to learn the true reason why my new CPU is misbehaving. But I’m getting way ahead of myself. Let me start as yesterday went on.
First off, I sent back the CPU Cooler to Newegg (which should arrive back in California by Wednesday of this week) and hopefully if things go as the website claims of using my own shipping labels (provided by my local USPS Store), I should get a full refund (including tax).

At this time, I have had ENOUGH of not knowing what the FUCK is going on with my CPU! So I once again asked the off-topic channel of the FTB Forum. Remembering what Dezent told me once, that I could possibly limit the cores.. I wanted to see if the experts know how to make this work in my favor.
And the results…..were beyond not promising (and still bothers me as I type this post). It wasn’t insults that got me, but for one thing that I was wrong about blaming Java (it’s Minecraft itself being the issue), and also..Minecraft is single-threaded. Basically, it doesn’t use all the CPU’s cores to distribute the load more evenly (which would mean a smoother framerate). The less cores, the better (it seems).
Wow. WOW. Notch, Angry may’ve called you a God in the early days. But you and your bald head are now on my shitlist. How..could you NOT FUCKING KNOW CPUs WOULD ADVANCE OVER THE YEARS?!?!
This probably affects Wurm as well (as Notch co-owned Wurm with Rolf in its early days (before he worked on Minecraft). Of course, this is just an assumption (IMO, it’s a pretty valid one).

I decided to go back to stress testing my CPU. It felt like total darkness was over me. Yet…somehow I saw a light shining. And that light was the CPU ‘throttling’ even during the test! I saw the SAME thing as I saw when I played Modded Minecraft, with the clock speed going down. I’m thinking, I finally had something to possibly prove it’s NOT Minecraft causing the issue!!
I asked Discord once again, this time taking my findings to one of the two who suggested the parts. We started to believe that it could be a setting either in Windows or BIOS, that was ‘throttling’ the cores to save power. But it seems no matter what I was suggested to try, it kept doing it.

Then finally, a breakthrough! The answer would soon be revealed! The REAL reason why the CPU isn’t working right, is….
…my motherboard doesn’t support it (as it clearly doesn’t show it being listed). The main guy who suggested the parts, greatly apologized to me and swore he would make this right. And how he did, was suggest I get a better board (obviously). He also gave me a list of compatible motherboards for my CPU.
He also suggested this, a CPU cooler that should fit and won’t try to crush my RAM. I feel very confident in it, as I remember a similar design I had in my computer, many years ago (tall cooler, but will fit better). Plus, a lot of reviews say this thing is very quiet.

My options are more open in picking a board in that list. I want something with a lot of USB ports, and looks good. Most of these include ports I’ve never seen in my life (which are mainly for attaching external HDDs/SSD’s… wait, an EXTERNAL SSD?!).
Unfortunately, even with this lower cost, I have to wait ’till possibly September until I have enough. But this is actually a good thing, as boards which are currently out of stock will eventually restock, and I’ll be able to check them out as well.

‘Till then, though…I’m stuck with this CPU. I -might- just go get my 4350 back in and store the 9590 until the day I’ll have better hardware (again)..but honestly, Minecraft is just one game (when I’ll have so many others which will possibly run better).
At least, I hope. E:D runs OK with it, at least. And if they do run better, I can say “Mmm, if I’m gonna play Modded Minecraft, I’m just going to have to work around the sudden slow times.”
Though, trying Vanilla Minecraft on the MRT Server. I wonder what that would be like.

Posted in Computing | Comments Off on When all hope feels lost…

Yes, I’d like some humble pie to eat. Thanks.

Well guess what, guys? I can never play Minecraft again (with a smooth FPS)! Isn’t that FUCKING FANTASTIC?! If your sarcasm detector is working, good for you.
But seriously.. I. fucked. UP! And I mean BIG time! Because guess what I also found out? That ‘powerful’ CPU that I was promised would make my computer like a beast? Ahahaha..not against the CPU Eater that is Java. Even the fastest CPU of the ‘FX’ brand, with 8 cores, cannot handle it.
It was literally, no better than my 4350. I..I don’t know what to say, guys. I could blame technology for being 15+ years ahead of me. I could blame Microsoft for forcing manufactures to produce Windows 10-only hardware. But none of it matters, when I’m STUCK WITH THIS PIECE OF SHIT FOR THE REST OF MY FUCKING LIFE!!!!!

Remember when I said I was concerned about the hardware? I forgot to add the CPU. I told people, that “this better be worth it”, and they said it would. But, I cannot blame them for not knowing the almighty Anti-Christ that is Java, eater of clock speeds, breaker of happiness. But FUCK..this isn’t something I can just send back to Newegg and get my money back! I am literally stuck with it!

Being told I could still get a ‘Skylake’ CPU (which will replace my motherboard/RAM) that doesn’t require Windows 10 (even though Tulsi told me differently by saying I would have issues trying to get my keyboard/mouse to work..though IMO he should had kept his fucking mouth shut about that as I’ve been told several times by others, that’s NOT true!!).
*sighs* Tulsi, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry. Because, why even bother..when THAT fucking thing will eventually be too slow for Java. And THEN, my only option is being forced to go to Windows 10 (and get spied on by the NSA).

*sighs*…Alright. Some of you are probably wondering what the fuck I’m going on about. Well, look at my previous post about overheating concerns. What I’m having, I think the CPU doesn’t know when to throttle down (and does it at times it shouldn’t be). And when it throttles down, it’s a major drop in core speed.
Any Java-based game, my CPU won’t like (which..possibly includes Wurm). Yet it plays ED without issues. I haven’t tried Just Cause 3 yet (which was one of the reasons I went gung-ho to get a better CPU).
What upsets me, is there’s NOTHING I can do to make Modded Minecraft playable again! I doubt limiting the cores when playing a Java-based game would help (as it seems to not matter how many cores there are). If…whatever the FUCK that Java needs the most to run as smooth as butter, isn’t enough.. why even bother trying to find an upgrade (that isn’t only for Windows 10)?

Some people on Discord warned me that the 9590 wouldn’t be powerful enough for Java, yet I refused to listen to them (as I already had the CPU at home)!! I thought they didn’t know what they’re talking about. But now I know, I cannot trust ANYONE to give me a suggestion now. Why? Because it’s the internet, and everyone has an opinion. When one group says “ohh, you’ll enjoy this. It’ll put a smile on your face” while the others say “WTF?! Dude, that CPU is ancient!”…I don’t know who, or what to believe in now.
Why bother asking for suggestions anymore? Is this ‘punishment’ for not using my own brain and getting an education on picking my own parts (and installing them)?! It seems to be. And I’m damn well not going to go into bragging mode and show off ‘my sweet rig’.

The emotions I feel (sadness/anger/etc..), I’m not sure if I’ll get any sleep tonight. I know there’s a lot more important things to worry about, than a CPU I got told by one group I would be OK, and the other saying I’m making a mistake… I swear, if I had the guts. I’d..end it.
I am so..sick of this. I had, the PERFECT computing life(when it came to acquiring upgrades). And then Micro$oft came along and said “SURPRISE!! We’re telling manufactures to make hardware only for one version of our OS, and there’s not a thing you can do about it!!”
Micro$oft, is the EA of Operating Systems. Privacy? PFFT!! Who needs THAT, right?! We need to spy in hopes you’re a terrorist! And the option to choose when to download/install our updates!? AHAHA! NOPE!! Not happening! But remember, we totally care for our customers!! (not)

I fucking hate my life. I liked it where things were simpler. “Hmm, you’re going to need better RAM and a Motherboard. Don’t worry, everything will still be compatible with Windows 7! Even if you downgraded back to XP, you will still be compatible! :D”
BRING THAT SIMPLE LIFE BACK, MICRO$OFT!!!

!! PC SECURITY ALERT !! “WannaCry” Worm infecting millions!

Will CPU overheating be ‘the new norm’ for me?

When it comes to computing, I like to live the simple life; come to someone (or several people) and ask their opinions of what hardware I should get (and in turn, accept their recommendations), buy the parts, take the parts up to a 3rd party, take my newly upgraded computer home, plug it in.. and reap the benefits. 🙂
I’ve done it for years, with no problem.

So…why do I feel I just shot myself in the foot (and bleeding out)? Getting that new CPU Cooler wasn’t just to get a better, quieter fan.. but it would had made the CPU a lot cooler.
Now this didn’t bug me until I had gotten Speccy installed, and saw my CPU was idling at around 8-9*C. I’m thinking “..wow! That’s some DAMN good Thermal Paste!” At this time, it never occurred to me (until being told much later), that no CPU can get this cool. So obviously the temp sensor is bugged.
Going back to the point I made this post, at times I saw it spike to 20-30*C on idle. I started to get worried (especially for later today) of when I play something like E:D.
Frantically looked for anything showing the critical heat limit of my new CPU. All I got was this forum post which is half about temps and half about questioning others about overclocking. One response, scared the fuck out of me. Something about the CPU will actually..shut down at 70*C. Another saying the CPU will cause BSODs at 60*C.
Since then, I felt like I seriously fucked up by getting this CPU.

So I’m speaking to Tulsi about it, and he says that it should just throttle down to protect the CPU if it gets too hot. If ‘throttling down’ means a sudden drop in FPS, that just makes me more sick. But.. I reluctantly tried running Modded Minecraft as a test (after getting the 64 bit version of Java installed of course).
Loading seemed the same as it was before, but at least it wasn’t like all of my resources were being sucked out with a straw (with the old CPU). Getting ingame, the speed wasn’t really any different (of course because the drive FTB is on is an HDD), but I noticed non-smooth FPS (around 35-50).
Monitoring the CPU temp (at this time I’m using HWMonitor instead of Speccy), I freaked out when I saw it hitting a maximum temp of 80*C. Told Tulsi and he claims that’s the same he gets (also states his CPU doesn’t even have thermal paste. IMO, not a good idea). The temp was averaging around 60-70*C (with a few times going up to 77-78*C).
A strange thing happened with Minecraft after I switched screens and got back in. The FPS was actually capping itself at 70 (though that’s what I set it to), then as the CPU heat increased..it didn’t really drop until a bit later (and went back down to 35-50).
I’m wondering if this is “some throttling” I’m seeing and ask Tulsi about it. He was going to give me a link to a program, but had to go to bed.

I was forced to go on Discord, to ask “uhhh.. are these temps OK?! Please say yes!” Asked the Off Topic section of the FTB Discord (while also telling one of the two of the EDEX Discord about how the CPU Cooler wouldn’t fit(and what would be my options for that)).

For the CPU, I’m being questioned of the legitimacy of HWMonitor saying the CPU is 9*C on idle, asking “do you have your PC outside? :D” All I could think of was “um..it has good thermal paste?” Was told it’s impossible for the CPU to be cooler than the current room temperature (for fan-based, yeah. But what about water-cooled?).
Overall, I’m basically told what Tulsi told me, that the CPU would ‘throttle down’ when it gets too hot. After asking if this means a drop in FPS(like what I saw in Modded Minecraft), they stated that it may not even be noticeable in performance.
Another suggested I use CoreTemp to get a better reading of the temps. Tried it out, and it’s pretty cool and straightforward. It also has a feature called ‘Overheat protection’ (which simply warns the user of the “OSHI–” critical heat level).

Then they asked me to take a picture of my current CPU Cooler. Here, I was kind of convinced it had a heatsink (because I saw the familiar brass pipes on the back of it). Taking the picture wasn’t the problem (used the flash feature of my phone)…it was uploading it. Now, I own a Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G. Yeah, I know..VERY old phone(one of the first in the Samsung Galaxy series). Was frantically looking for the drivers for the phone (so my computer will see it as a device and attempt to connect to it), but it seems my phone is so old…the drivers don’t exist.
Got an idea of sending the picture to one of my email accounts (and then just copy/paste the pic to Discord). THIS turned into madness. My primary email that’s attached to my ISP, was showing mail..from three years ago (and nothing else). Sent it to my gmail account, and that FINALLY got the pic uploaded! Freakin’ hell, that took nearly an hour trying to get one picture uploaded!!
After pasting it to Discord, I learned that it was a stock cooler. Crap. However, I was told “you should be fine”, and another mention of the throttling.
Finally, one jokingly suggested that I buy at least two dozen of these things to cool the CPU… nah, not when they’re $14 a can.

As for the CPU Cooler that was too big for my case, I got ahold of one of them that suggested the cooler. After giving him the same pic I had for the other Discord channel, he was really surprised of just how close the RAM was to my current cooler. He suggested to either getting a smaller cooler, or 2x 8GB sticks (instead of the current 4x 4GB sticks).
The next day, I called the guy who installed my hardware and asked him, just how far the RAM was being covered by the new cooler. He said, all of them. So that proves sending the cooler back is the best thing to do. He also said (after I asked him) to not worry about the stock cooler, that “as long as it doesn’t hit 120*C, you’re good”.
That is a MAJOR sigh of relief there. Though I will continue monitoring the temp, at least I don’t need to switch to ‘panic mode’.

And..that’s about it. I’ll need to contact Newegg for the return labels, and get that CPU Cooler shipped back (and get my money back).

.
EDIT: It seems the ‘war’ over if the CPU is overheating or not, is continuing. I was watching some videos from Simon’s Tech Tips, and he’s talking about a $5 cooler and if it’s better than an Intel stock cooler.
Now, this wasn’t the focus here. It was this comment made by “Razor Gaming;
Actually this can only happen with Intel CPUs. They have an insanely high shutoff temperature, while Intel’s is 90°C or lower. Also Intel CPUs tend to run hotter. It’s hard to get AMD’s chips over 60°C unless you’re doing serious overclocking on a stock cooler.
I made a response, and he says I’m “talking out of my ass” saying the 9590 doesn’t come with a stock cooler…no shit, it doesn’t. I never even said it did, and stated I’m using a cooler from an old 4350. And now several people are questioning how or why in the fuck I’m doing this.
Ok, it’s obvious.. the temperature sensor in the chip is bad. But…I don’t know what to believe, really. You got to trust someone who’s got experience (which is obvious). But do I trust the guy who installed my hardware (saying 120*C is the danger zone), or someone claiming that 80*C is? With the sensor malfunctioning, I have no idea who to believe.

So I tried downloading and trying to run a free trial of ‘AIDA64’ (as this is what Simon used to test). What I meant by “trying”, is I’m trying to figure out where in the fuck is this ‘stress test’ he uses. Finally found it as ‘System Stability Test’. Of course, since I don’t feel paying the asking price, I get “TRIAL VERSION” over the two helpful graphs.
Ran a stress test on my CPU, the FPU(I guess I should ask what the hell this is), and the Cache(is this like browser cache?), for at least 10 minutes. For one thing, I didn’t notice ANY throttling, which is good. Yet it seems this test (with it having 100% usage on all 8 cores), it’s not getting anywhere as hot as CoreTemp showed.
I’m seeing an average of 63.1 to 63.3*C, with the min/max temp around 58*C, to 73-74*C (instead of close to or at 80*C when playing a game).

On top of that, when I stopped the test.. I noticed it’s saying the CPU temp is around 40-41*C(with a few times going to 45*C) on idle…w..what the FUCK is going on here?! Are these my ACTUAL temps (instead of what seems to be complete bullshit from HWMonitor and CoreTemp)? Yet, by what this guy claims, why hasn’t my CPU ‘shut down’ when it reached 70*C? Again, I noticed absolutely zero throttling.

I am so confused (and scared) here. Perhaps I’m just worried over nothing, or this is something else. I think I’m going to lose my mind over this…

Parts installed, now getting everything back

Wow..what a day. Lots to talk about. First, the hardware. Everything got installed…everything but the very thing I was forced to wait a week to get my hands on it (the CPU Cooler). It wasn’t for the fact the box was upside down when I got it, but the cooler wanted to Brock Lesner my RAM (aka crush it). Fortunately (and also unfortunately at the same time), my little “OH GOD!! SO HOT!!” screamer of a CPU cooler still fits.
It’s very unfortunate the new cooler I paid nearly $70 for, wouldn’t work. The ‘funny’ thing about it, I was told it would in Discord…however, I will give them the benefit of a doubt that they didn’t know my case (though I do remember telling them it, but maybe they didn’t see).
In any case, I’m going to send this back to Newegg on Monday. This will give me time to get everything (software-wise) back to the way I had it.

When I was at the shop, I asked the guy as I was paying about people telling me to upgrade to Windows 10. He says “you won’t like it as a gamer”, and that I “should be fine” that the new CPU was going to be used with such an ‘ancient’ OS.
So I got it home, plugged it in, and frantically searched for my Windows 7 x64 OEM copy. Turned it on, BIOS wanted my attention (to verify the new hardware was installed).
As I’m going over the menus, I start to hear a very loud clicking sound coming from my computer (like a cable brushing against a fan). The sound got louder and louder, and I turned it off and looked inside, thinking there’s a uncut twist tie rubbing against the CPU fan. But I saw nothing of concern. It wasn’t until later, when the sound finally stopped and I was trying to put the side plate back on, I found out it was the wire attached from the CPU Cooler to the Motherboard, rubbing against the big fan ontop the case.
My father managed to tie the cable down (as I was too scared to touch the wire as I couldn’t find my anti-static band..and you people want me to build a computer?! HAH!!), and the sound was no more.

Installing Windows, was like “Preparing to– DONE!” ..HAH!! HOLY hell was it fast. Good to see what I heard about SSDs, actually being true. I couldn’t imagine how fast Modded Minecraft would load if it was on an SSD. Though, maybe half the time it’s taking now.
As for the boot time, right now I cannot really judge. Even with an HDD (of my size), it’s still pretty fast when you have barely anything there. I wanna see if it’s still fast with all the crap I had on the old drive. Then and only then can I judge, and see if it’s worthy to -maybe- replace my other HDDs with SSDs (at least one of them).

As for the CPU, wow. EIGHT cores on this baby! 😀 Though, I wonder if I made the right decision (as I know of Intel’s CPUs, that more cores aren’t always better). I mean, take the i5. It’s a dual core, but it could be more powerful than the one I just got. It seems clock speed is much more important, than the number of cores.
(Ohh, look at me being a computer wiz, when I have absolutely NO idea what I’m talking about)

Now to get to the other stuff. Before I began downloading/installing a whopping 200 files from Windows Update (that only 195 successfully got through), I whipped out my motherboard driver install CD. After getting the usual installed (sound/internet drivers), I stopped short from installing the CPU chipset drivers. I’m hoping Windows Update took care of it for me.
As for the speed of the install (my old HDD VS this new SSD), It’s..well? Hmm. I feel it was somewhat faster than the HDD, but maybe basing speed over the fact it had 200 files to get, is kind of harsh to judge (as some of them felt like it took the same speed as my old drive).
But what a surprise it was when it took about the same time of seeing the Windows screen after an update (around a minute)..then seeing a black screen for much longer in my primary monitor. Losing my mind here. Decided to see if it’s on the secondary, and sure enough it was. Of course, the way I have my monitor setup, I have to use ‘monitor 2’ as my primary (as the only one that supports HDMI). Turned out it installed a NVIDIA driver (using my GPU instead of the motherboard’s graphics).

There was also another issue (that thankfully had a happy ending).. my ‘E’ drive wasn’t showing up in Windows. So after Windows get done installing the updates and told me to restart, I shut down instead, unplugged everything, and checked to see if the guy accidentally left the drive unplugged when he was working on it. But from what I could see, that wasn’t the case. The only thing of issue I saw, was a loosely-fitting power cable in the E drive. I mean, all of the pins fit and it goes in all the way (and I actually tried to ground myself and fiddled with it), but it just doesn’t feel secure at all.
Decided that it was fine (I doubt it’ll just wiggle itself out on its own). Searched through IE (didn’t have Firefox installed at the time) and discovered I have to go into Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. Sure enough, the drive was there, just didn’t have a drive letter assigned to it (as my DVD-ROM snagged it). Messed with the drive letters, and got the E drive reconnected. However, it’s strangely listed as a ‘System’ drive. But (so far), I haven’t seen anything concerning about this.
So all is good in the world!

Finally, the time has come to start moving all of my crap off my external and onto the new C. Started with Firefox, then it quickly escalated to getting Discord and Skype installed to ask people I knew, if they knew where I could find ‘the thing’ I needed. You know, that thing I said would happen after I backed up the C (how there would be a few files remaining)? ..It happened, but not the way you think. I forgot to take a picture of the taskbar icon position, and the plugins I’m using in Firefox (didn’t even think of writing them down either..not smart).
I knew of some of the plugins (NoScript/AdBlock Plus/etc..), but the ones I needed (and didn’t know the names of) were the ones to make Firefox look like I had it before (I like the older XP’ish versions more, as they looked better(IMO)). I did manage to grab ‘Classic Theme Restorer’ (which fixed the ugly tabs to flat ones, and moved them below the bookmarks), but the name of ‘the thing’ still eluded me.
It wasn’t until I was speaking to someone on Discord, when I suddenly started thinking “what if I searched for ‘theme’?” Sixth search result..’Firefox 2, the theme, reloaded’. I found ‘the thing’! Now why couldn’t I had found it A FUCKING HOUR AGO instead of embarrassing myself?!?! Damnit, my brain needs to be upgraded.

Oy. Crisis averted, world is saved. Blog post done. This thing took me longer to edit and write than it did downloading those 200 Windows Updates! SAD!

Got all my parts!

Good afternoon, everyone. It is Thursday, the day I get my CPU Cooler! Woot! And it came..through the USPS instead of FEDEX (as the last shipment). Opened the box, and found the box the CPU Cooler is in…was upside down. Wow.
OK, Newegg. I get having to wait a week since I ordered the parts as ‘punishment’ for choosing the ‘Super Eggsaver’ option for shipping…, but to find my CPU Cooler upside-down in the shipping box? That’s a bit harsh.
Guess I deserve this treatment…?? *sings “Greed makes the world go ’round!”*

..Oy. I hope this ‘mishandling’ of the cooler didn’t cause permanent damage, and I would have to wait even longer if I have to send it back to Newegg to get a replacement. Especially that tomorrow morning is when I send the parts (and my computer) over to the guy to get them installed. It was going to be today, but the guy is too busy and said to give them to him tomorrow morning.
So yeah, exciting! Gotta get up early (though 10 in the morning isn’t ‘early’ for a lot of people, it is for me as I typically get up at noon. Don’t judge me. :P).

I also forgot to mention, that I ‘feel’ I got my C drive fully backed up last night. I also took the time to backup my Firefox bookmarks (and even took pictures of what my active windows are).
Yesterday afternoon, I was actively looking for a 21st century replacement for such an ancient practice (aka, have a program do the work for me and sniff through the drive, and find non-Windows files). Sadly, such a program seems to not exist in these modern times of computing. It’s either “I’ll back up your entire drive, or I’ll backup Windows-only files.”
Stated the reason I was concerned about this in yesterday’s post. But at least today, I have lots of time to verify that I didn’t forget anything.

Computer upgrade day comes ever closer

…And I still haven’t backed up my C drive!! D:( Why am I procrastinating when my CPU cooler arrives tomorrow? Simple. ..I’m worried I won’t be able to backup everything that needs to be, by the time I take my computer up to the shop (which will either be Friday or Saturday, weather(and parents) permitting).

I’ve wrote down everything that I can think of, of what needs to be backed up or reinstalled through the internet, on a sticky note (not the tiny ones made out of paper, the ones that come with Windows). I’ve scoured the C drive’s file system, looking for anything that I may’ve forgotten. The majority I can find is a few save files here and there that Steam creates.
There’s also Terraria (that I haven’t played in a long time) of world saves and backups I’ve made, mods I downloaded, and stuff like that. Those have been listed.

So yeah. The issue isn’t finding a place to back them up (as I typically use my external), but when everything (I can think of) is backed up..there’s always a few critical (to me) files I’ll end up forgetting(and feel like kicking myself for not remembering). I’m this way everytime I have to do a reinstall of an OS.
Really wish there was an easier option (like someone else doing this for me.. :P). Alas, I might as well get this done today, and pray no files are being left behind.

It’s like an asteroid is heading for my C drive (that will destroy it, but a new one will be born from the ashes), and I need to ‘evacuate’ all of my stuff before it’s too late. I’m not going to lie…many of you might not make it, and you’ll be deleted forever. Rest assured, you will be missed (especially if you were a world file I forgot to grab).

As the days go by, I’m getting concerned(PC hardware)

…about the hardware I got last Friday. Mainly of the CPU, the SSD mounting bracket, and the SSD itself. I’ll start with the mounting bracket (of a past worry, but it’s OK now). I was worried, of that I don’t … Continue reading

Pandora “Premium”!? What happened to One?

Hey, so this is the “first thing” I needed to discuss that wasn’t related to gaming. In the same timespan as the second thing, I got an email (in my Spam folder) about “Introducing Pandora Premium”.
Now I’m with Pandora One, and I’m paying $35 a year in December. And they want more money? I’ll pass. I like my current service.

But then I did some research on this “Premium” service, and was in for the shock of my life when I noticed ‘Pandora One’…doesn’t exist anymore! WHAT THE FUCK?!?! They..they got rid of One, without telling me?! That’s low. On top of it, this new service is nearly $110 /year! The ‘cheaper’ service is “Pandora Plus”. I heard of the announcement of this, yet I assumed it was just Pandora One going under a new name.
…No, it’s not. They want $55 /year for it. That’s TWICE what I’ve paid (since 2009 (I think) of when I signed up to it)! Right now, I don’t even know what my plan is. Probably ‘Pandora Free’ (hey, can you all fucking give me my money back?).

I’m this close to cancelling my subscription, and going with something like Spotify (or some other music streaming service). Sent them an email, ‘trying’ to be as calm as I can (a few cuss words managed to get in(but can you really blame me for being left out in the dark like this?), but they’ll just say “we’re sorry for any difficulty this has caused you”). “Sorry” isn’t going to give me all the money I handed over to them, to support a music streaming option that doesn’t exist anymore.
See if they’ll respond to it.

Now these two plans, and their higher pricing. I get why they did this. It’s quite obvious. They’re getting new music (and the artists want a lot of money). And as any company out there, they pass the cost to the consumer (because fuck them paying for it to keep costs low).
$35 a year felt reasonable, for as much as I used Pandora (which is not really that much). I refuse to pay any more. It’s not worth it.

.
EDIT: Alright, guys. Thanks to all of your emails (and /r/Pandora), it seems Pandora One is now Pandora Plus. And..they did send me an email, but I just never read it (which makes this my fault, and I feel like an ass for the way I acted in that email I sent to them). And as for the fact I’m still paying $35 /year, I’m on some sort of “grandfathered” plan (for having Pandora One before the change).
This means I’m getting the same thing of Pandora Plus, for half the cost. I-I’m OK with this!! Absolutely NO problem there. 🙂

But just how long until this “grandfathered” plan lasts, is unknown. Perhaps you guys could tell me, if this thing will stay the same until an asteroid hits the Earth and ends all life as we know it, or if I would eventually have to pay the $55 /year.
At any rate, at least I don’t feel screwed (for now).

Now if you would escuse me, I’m going to be listening to the Skyrim OST again.
