Fallout 3 and Windows 7, revised version

Probably not, but Windows 7 has sold me. I’ve proved Bethesda wrong by them saying Fallout 3 is not compatible with 7.

Not only is it compatible, but it’s more stable than it ever has been when I had XP. So far I’ve had not one BSOD or lock up.
I have completed the Wasteland Survival Guide. I got GNR to sing all over the Capital Wasteland. I took care of the AntAgonizer and the Mechanist. I got Ivan back to Arefu during the Blood Ties quest. And now I’m going to Vault 92 to get that violin for that sweet old lady so she can play her music.

This isn’t the best thing since sliced bread. But it’s just as awesome.

EDIT: I said I wasn’t going to do it until I got close to completing the main quest, but I finally did it; installed the GOTY edition to get the DLCs installed. I was confident enough my computer was stable to handle them.

I played Point Lookout. Nothing like new areas to explore, and new enemies to kill. But as the boat guy said, they make the Super Mutants look like Radroaches. Something like that anyway. If it’s not like that, that’s how I put it.

Anyway, it’s a great DLC. But I’m not typing this to talk about the fun I had with them. This is about how stable Fallout 3 is with the DLCs installed.
In Point Lookout, as I was playing spy games, I went into the sub. A few seconds after it loaded came my first SYSTEM LOCK UP.
I tried to wave it off as a first time thing. Since it didn’t happen again for quite sometime. AKA I made it through the other DLCs fine.

However there was more lock ups on the horizon. This one was in The Pitt. Though I can’t remember what I was doing at the time. I shrugged it off by saying “it locked up before in The Pitt with my lock up issue”.

The next lock up happened after I set the nukes to destroy the huge satellite, that I was inside of, in Broken Steel.
When I attempted to escape, and the Virdibird came, tried to get in.. BAM!

And now we have two lock ups that happened just today! Joy.. I swear they’re becoming more frequent now. Next one was attempting to trigger the Head of State quest. Was approaching the gate out of the subway to The Mall. Inches before I got there, BAM.

And the latest was trying to help the idiotic group of slaves to the Lincoln Memorial. Yes, you can completely bypass this but I wanted to protect them. I was bored. 😛
Hannibal was going the wrong fucking way. Checked my map and he was leading the group RIGHT BACK TO THE FUCKING START POINT!! D:<
I yelled at them, and standing infront of the confused, lost idiot of an NPC, only for him to just walk right past me. They met an Albino Radscorpion and "Quest FAILED" showed up.

"FUCK IT" I said. Then I tried reloading my save and tried going the correct way to the memorial. Met a Super Mutant Overlord under this overpass infront of us. Killed it. Tried to loot the body.. BAM again!

UGH! I don’t know what’s more annoying. Hannibal going the wrong way, or my computer acting like the lock up issue is back!
And if that’s not bad enough, there was this one time I was going under this gap in this building, my FPS tanks, music studdering. It wasn’t the fact it made it unplayable, but I could feel the “What in the fuck is this?! My computer surpasses the recommended
requirements! It should NOT be studdering!!”
At least restarting the game fixed it.

There was also this time I was listening to GNR while following along side the slow-ass slave group. Listening to Three-Dog as he was doing one of his Public Service Announcements when I noticed a few Feral Ghouls next to a highway pillar. They engaged. We killed them. But before I could say “What are Feral Ghouls doing up here?”, Three-Dog did his “And now, some music…” and it was silence. Pure silence.

Checked my iPip Player. Same thing. That old lady’s violin station, same thing! Restarting the game fixed it.

.
.
I just don’t understand. Without the DLCs, I had NO problems. Not one! When I had XP, I couldn’t even get past the Super-Duper Mart without a BSOD, and this was with no DLCs on top of it.
This time, it doesn’t BSOD. It just flat-out locks the system up, forcing me to manually restart. But it doesn’t do it at level load anymore.

What’s worse, and I hope it’s not related to Fallout 3. My own god damn screen saver locked my system up once!!

Rig’N’Roll site redone, “new” epic pictures

Rate me clocks. This redesign of rignroll.com was probably done last month. Good thing is RnR will not suffer the same fate as Duke Nukem Forever.
Nevertheless, there’s “new” pictures. Why I quoted that is they’ve been taken in October of last year (according to Windows 7), but surfaced on their site this year.

The map of the driving area is gone, replaced with “You can get here by going here or here or here” in the City/Town Listing.
The old pictures of the towns are gone, replaced by the newer ones I mentioned before. And god damn are they epic!! Especially San Francisco, showing more of the famous I-80 Bay Bridge, with a rare glimpse of inside the tunnel on the Westbound side. Though I wish they showed the island and the access road to it.

Greenfield, one of my favorite cities when I was editing Ivan’s RnR map in PTTM, hasn’t really changed much. More pics of the houses, which gives me ideas of what to do in Minecraft.

Los Angeles.. of course those pics are going to be epic. It’s one of the biggest cities on the Earth. And you got I-5 and I-10. And then there’s the epic I-10E sign picture that had me squealing like a pig when I first saw it. But it’s been changed. I-10E now goes to the LA Warehouse as well as San Diego, and SR 110 which went to Pasadena, now goes to Downtown LA (yet there’s a typo with it showing ‘Downdown’).
They’ve been doing some cleaning. Removing cities from signs that wouldn’t be in the release. This is good. It would piss alot of people off by not being able to go to Santa Ana or wherever as the sign said you would go there.

Santa Barbara also has epic pictures, especially this one of US-101 with a view of the West Coast.

And then there’s this in Patterson. The overpass I tried to redo in Haulin’, south of Atlanta of my changes to I-85, that lead to the Atlanta “Warehouse” I made. Including that restaurant.

There is also new gameplay/teaser videos that were made and released last year, and most of them point to “Release date: Q1 2010” at the end. This could be Russia’s release date. It still will be time until they make it where it will be released in the US.
And when that day comes… I wanna be one of the first to get their hands on it! I’m going to have a fucking field day with this. Interstate orgasm. 😀

System failure culprit found, squished/Valve plays mind games in Portal

It’s been 6 hours since I turned my system on after removing a nasty Trojan virus, and everything’s still working OK *knocks on wood*.

I’ve been doing an Antivirus scan. It nearly finished when my system locked up. Called the shop and they told me it could be Spyware that’s infecting my system.
After restoring my previous working version of my Windows install, I downloaded every Spyware finder I could, including SUPERAntiSpyware.

Was talking to Fishy about what was going on when the program detected something different from Cookies. A Trojan!
‘Trojan.Agent/Gen-Rogue[Installer]’ was what it was called. I stopped the scanner and told it to remove, and it told me to restart. So I did.

Windows 7 booted up beautifully after that. No black screen. No nothing abnormal! Decided to check the log to see what caused the infection. It was pointing to my C drive backup folder, on my E drive…
The file infected was this “ANTI-MALWARE-APPLICATION.EXE”. I don’t remember downloading this thing.

I redid the scan and noticed the same Trojan pops up again. This time on my F drive. Same folder structure and file name.
Where did this file come from? How was it able to work itself perfectly to fit in my C drive backup folder?
Nevertheless, it’s gone and my system is running normally again. I should be grateful that I was able to remove this thing. Not all Trojans are this easy to remove.

I’m not even 100% certain I’ve seen the last of this virus.

In other news, Valve has released a very… strange update to Portal. We now have these radios, like the one in the first test chamber when you wake up. Except these have a light that stays red until you hit a point and begin to hear a strange sound. On top of it, there’s a new achievement for it. 26 radios. Can you find them all?

The signals could possibly be pointing to “HL2: EP3 release date here”. These signals can actually be converted into pictures. Some point to the Borealis.
All of the sounds are named “Dinosaur” for some strange reason.

Windows won’t boot all the way.. panic erupts

Minecraft, coding, my computer, and angry. Four things that should not mix. Especially what just happened 15 minutes ago.
I wanted a way that something would automatically make a map backup. Angry helped set up a script to do this.

However the script isn’t perfect. It launches, trying to find the server even if Minecraft isn’t running. He had me put a few things in.. things I believe caused a five-alarm scare.

Started as a typical late Monday morning. Browsing Facepunch. Listening to Pandora. Angry’s in bed. Right at 3:30AM, my system locks up for no good reason.
I try to do a restart, notice how much longer it’s taking to boot. See a black screen. No desktop. No nothing, except my mouse cursor.
I click the left mouse button, both screens flicker, keyboard locks up, mouse is stuck with an hourglass cursor, but not frozen.
Then I see this transparent white overlay covering both screens.

Everytime I attempted to restart, same..fucking..thing! I panic, grab my cell phone and try to send a voice txt message to angry, pleading for assistance. I know he’s asleep, but I was hoping when he’s in school, he’ll use it and hear my plead, knowing I’m fucked and have taken my computer up to the shop.

What was good is Windows was still working in Safe Mode. I tried to disable angry’s files from executing, hoping that would stop this. Couldn’t get the Schedule Tasks window to show in Safe Mode.
So I tried moving his files to a temp folder, thinking that if the scheduler doesn’t find the file needed, it won’t launch and stop this.
I was wrong…

Again, to Safe Mode. I notice the popup to the right, saying I could restore my system to an earlier state. It recommended I selected the one after I updated Paint.NET.
Did it, system restarted… saw the desktop! YES!!

My nerves are still on edge from the ordeal, and I’m concerned it may happen again. But this system backup was before angry had me make changes to his files. And now that I got the scheduler disabled for the backup task, it shouldn’t happen.
If it does, I’ll be forced to take it up to the shop.
.
.

UPDATE: It’s still doing it. Turned on my computer this morning, same thing I got. Called the shop. They told me they probably won’t be able to get me in today.
Angry responded to my pleading voice txt, saying he’ll try his best to fix it when he gets home from school.

I tried an idea by inserting my burned Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit DVD into my drive. Attempted to do a repair. It recommended I do another system restore, so I did it. And now it seems to be working OK.. for how long I don’t know. I’m doing Antivirus scans and everything else I can think of to isolate the issue. I’m hoping it’s not necessary to take it up to the shop and just fix this on my own.

I really don’t know if this is angry’s doing at all. It could be a virus. The fact the program in question launched perfectly before I ran Minecraft, is baffling. That’s why it has to be something else. Something I downloaded by mistake.

One odd thing about this. When I was doing the Windows Repair, it listed Windows being on my E drive instead of my C drive. Yet in Windows Explorer, there’s no WINDOWS folder on my E drive.
And then there’s the ironic thing. After my system “recovered” from.. whatever this is, the Action Center flag icon popped up and recommended I back up my files.
I try, and when it lists the drives, it doesn’t show my C drive being in it. Yet it does in Windows Explorer. Also lists my E drive as the recommended destination for the file backup.

Steam bugs out, removes friends

Just 10 minutes ago, Steam hiccuped and de-friended everyone in my Friends List.
That’s not all. I’ve been trying to reinstall Gmod today. I got HL2 installed, and HL2:DM, then as I was getting EP1/2, Steam starts to fuck up. My download speed drops to .. nothing, and stays there, yet my connection still works.

I’m not the only one. Everyone that got this latest update of Offline Mode not working has been affected by this. I’m sure Valve knows about this and is diligently working to fix it. We may have to re-add all of our friends again.

If you want my opinion, I really don’t give a shit. What I was pissed off about is the delayed downloads.

New “You’re a Gold Member!” message on Facepunch homepage

It’s nothing big, but it surprised me when I logged into Facepunch today. An announcement post stating I’ve ‘been made’ a gold member, when it was a few months ago.

I’m guessing the reason is to welcome new goldies that don’t know about the change.

Here’s what it looks like;

To keep 7 or go back to XP

I keep questioning myself this baffling question. I’m not 100% happy with 7 so far.
Reasons why is because I have to do shit to get my games to work, and wonder if they’re 64-bit compatible. Plus I wish I could really dig into 7 and set it to be like XP, but I fear that even though I managed to activate it over the phone, that there’s a hidden trial period.

To tell you the truth, I don’t even know why I upgraded. I guess it was to hopefully fix Fallout 3, yet I feel it was pointless to do so.
There was two other reasons, but reasons that I created and the only way to fix was to reinstall.

7 still has its little quirks, and surprises. Some more confusing than others. For example, I don’t know how but I finally got Sven Co-op to work for longer than an hour.
Also I noticed ever since I messed around in Windows Explorer, trying to get it to look like XP, I somehow stopped the thing of previewing what’s running in the taskbar. I wonder if it was the thing of trying to get Sven’s window where I wanted it.

And then there’s Crysis. You would think a game that was released three years ago, that was designed for next-gen hardware, would run flawlessly in 7. It doesn’t run… at all. Everytime I attempt to load it, I get a blank screen of it attempting to show the EA splash screen.. then 7 hiccups and causes the game to crash on me, everytime.
Again, somehow, I also got it working. I removed the compatibility mode in Steam, and added -dx9 to the Bin32 version of Crysis.exe, and it showed the splash screen and everything. To “thank” me, I’ve finally unlocked Very High in graphic settings.

Yet, when trying to get Crysis to run in the Steam Overlay, it fails to. When launched, it shows I’m in a Non-Steam game, then shows I’m Online and shows the game.

Anyway, getting away from the games, I still just don’t know. I want to say 7 is just too new. Not really tested. But that’s a lie. It’s been out long enough to be a stable, dependable OS.
To go back to XP would make me feel like a sissy. Not being able to handle the changes, and knowing eventually I would have to go back, because 7 is Windows’ future, and XP is in the past, much like Windows 98 was to XP.

Except Windows 98 was an unstable piece of shit. XP was much, more stable.

First case of “this worked fine before in XP” issues

Angry got me to reinstall Half-Life 1 on my new OS, to play some Sven Co-op.
I knew how old Half-Life was and questioned angry if Valve made it 64-bit compatible. It’s not really compatible but 7 has a compatibility mode to get older games to work.

Once I got Half-Life and Sven Co-op installed, we started playing through the HL1 campaign. Several times, the game froze up on me, but didn’t freeze up my computer. I tried compatibility mode, and I thought I had it.
I also tried using Software video rending instead of OpenGL. Since then I was unable to access the Steam Overlay for some strange reason.
If that wasn’t bad enough, I couldn’t get the game set up in Windowed Mode right. Fortunately I found out how to set that and fixed it.

But it didn’t fix the constant, random freezing. Soon I gave up trying.

I don’t know what to think of at this time. Does Windows 7 hate Half-Life because it’s designed for Windows XP 32-bit? Has my lock up been brought back because of 7? Is the fact I’m running a trial version of 7 mean my games won’t work right?

One interesting, yet not shocking note is the fact I’ve tried playing Left 4 Dead 2 before I got Half-Life installed, and it ran beautifully and flawlessly, even with maxed settings.
This leads me to believe Half-Life will not work in 7. It’s too old. Either that or angry’s lag-filled server caused my issues. Or Sven Co-op will not work in 7.

I’ll need to do some investigating — ask around the Steam forum if Half-Life will work in 7.

Another way is to try other old games, such as Oblivion. GTA4 might also be a good test candidate. Hell, why not try Half-Life 2?
Even Gmod would be good to test.

After upgrading.. my thoughts

Due to the fact my parents didn’t leave the house all day today, I never had a chance to get my .txt file print out. Though angry finally got ahold of me on my new cell phone.

Thanks to his help, he sorta guided me through the install process, using the .txt file I made that I was planning to print out. Fortunately I remembered most of it and knew what to do.

The install didn’t go really smooth. When I first got Windows 7 to boot, it took 2-3 minutes until I finally got a screen. Then close to 5 minutes for the next screen. Other than that, it ran ok.

The only other problem is the CD Key I was given, is unfortunately bad. Now that I got 7, it gave me a chance to use it. I tried, and it showed that it couldn’t be read.
Shockingly, I actually had internet access, and I never used my Motherboard Driver CD. I used it to PM the guy that sent me the ISO and CD Key. He has yet to reply.
I fear he may not want to help me, since he’s tired of the abusive PMs he got of people demanding to get new keys and/or respond to them. If he isn’t, I’ll be forced to either buy a new key or reinstall Windows XP until I can afford to get a new key.
Someone may had already used the key, or the key was bad in the first place.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about what’s new in Windows. For the first thing, I hate the fact Quick Launch is gone. But what I dislike the most is the fact they combined Windows Explorer and My Computer into one program.
No more simple, easy navigation as I had in both Windows XP and 98. Now you have to choose a drive to view its contents and hope you can find what you’re looking for. This is a dick move by Microsoft.

I’m also noticing something ever since I installed Firefox. A bit of of a slow down when scrolling. Didn’t see that with XP.

Then there’s the cool stuff. The way windows pop up is amazing. They don’t just instantly appear like XP. They now use transparency and zoom. This affect continues even as Windows restarts.

Another new feature of Windows 7, which is also with Vista, is Microsoft Gadgets that can be placed on your desktop. Clock, Calendar, CPU Usage meter, Weather.. all sorts of goodies. Yes, Google Gadgets has this and more, but.. these are Windows gadgets, and no real install is required. Not to mention it doesn’t put a strain on your resources or consume hard drive space.

I have 30 days to try this out, and this is the perfect way to know if ‘spending’ $120 was worth it. If my games start fucking up, then I’m going back to XP.

Planning to upgrade to Windows 7 tomorrow

But I’m still thinking of the “what if”‘s, and it’s kinda driving me crazy.
How did I come up with the money to pay for Windows 7? I didn’t. In the Gold Forum of Facepunch, there’s a guy giving out free, genuine Windows CD Keys.
The fact he’s a college student, and paid a certain amount of money, he can legally do this.

So I PMed and got a key for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and an ISO for it.
I got the ISO on a DVD-R, and have been writing down a step by step list to print out using father’s computer once again, to be used for tomorrow. But my brain keeps being filled with “what if”.

Such as; “What if the key is wrong?”, “What if the installation fails?”, “What if my computer isn’t 64-bit compatible?”, “What if my games start crashing after installing 7?”, and one important one…”What if Fallout 3 still BSODs on me?”

If only I could see into the future and turn these “what if”‘s into “this will” or “this won’t happen”‘s.
But I guess the only real way to know is to take one foot forward into this and go.
