First case of “this worked fine before in XP” issues

Angry got me to reinstall Half-Life 1 on my new OS, to play some Sven Co-op.
I knew how old Half-Life was and questioned angry if Valve made it 64-bit compatible. It’s not really compatible but 7 has a compatibility mode to get older games to work.

Once I got Half-Life and Sven Co-op installed, we started playing through the HL1 campaign. Several times, the game froze up on me, but didn’t freeze up my computer. I tried compatibility mode, and I thought I had it.
I also tried using Software video rending instead of OpenGL. Since then I was unable to access the Steam Overlay for some strange reason.
If that wasn’t bad enough, I couldn’t get the game set up in Windowed Mode right. Fortunately I found out how to set that and fixed it.

But it didn’t fix the constant, random freezing. Soon I gave up trying.

I don’t know what to think of at this time. Does Windows 7 hate Half-Life because it’s designed for Windows XP 32-bit? Has my lock up been brought back because of 7? Is the fact I’m running a trial version of 7 mean my games won’t work right?

One interesting, yet not shocking note is the fact I’ve tried playing Left 4 Dead 2 before I got Half-Life installed, and it ran beautifully and flawlessly, even with maxed settings.
This leads me to believe Half-Life will not work in 7. It’s too old. Either that or angry’s lag-filled server caused my issues. Or Sven Co-op will not work in 7.

I’ll need to do some investigating — ask around the Steam forum if Half-Life will work in 7.

Another way is to try other old games, such as Oblivion. GTA4 might also be a good test candidate. Hell, why not try Half-Life 2?
Even Gmod would be good to test.
