When you wish you were just being pessimistic by not knowing what’s actually going to happen, but sadly it’s real.. and it spells really bad news if you still use SDK 2.0.
What is the VRChat Creator Companion? From what I looked up, it makes uploading content to VRChat faster. However, it only supports SDK 3.0 avatars and Udon-built worlds.
Now this is fine and all, though you’re probably asking “but Benie, why is this ‘bad
news’ for us SDK 2.0 content creators? If this VRCC thing only works for 3.0 and Udon, why would this affect us?” ..Well,

kiss all of your awesome, dedicated work over the years, GOODBYE if you refuse to go
to 3.0/Udon, when 2023 rolls in. Because the VRCCC, will be made mandatory in order to upload content. And there is not a god damn thing we can do about it.
It is funny, how the devs in the recent UI update claim they “hear us” when it comes to transparency. Yet they still pull the same song and dance, never stating “by the way, in 2023 if you don’t update your work to 3.0, well.. FUCK YOU!! 😂”
But at the same time, they can fire back and say “we warned you 2.0 will cease to exist back in 2020. It’s old technology and it’s time to move on.” At least that would be their excuse. But their real reason is.. they really don’t give a fuck about you. If you have old content, they don’t want that anymore. All they want, is their stockholders to see
they’re ‘innovating’. They want fresh faces, new content to show VRChat is getting
better.. while leaving behind the foundation that made them great in the first
place.
But hey Just like EAC, they know they can get away with this. Just like the EAC shitstorm, they’re “too big to fail”. Lots say 80% of VRChat’s playerbase will leave.
…And go where exactly? Chillout? Yeah, they still support 2.0 (because they actually give a fuck about content creators), and likely we’ll see even more worlds available. Which is great!!
Yet… lots of people also say it’s a ‘dead game’ and the updates are never going to catch up to VRChat. Plus, there’s still the “my friends are there” aspect.
Except this would be different than EAC. This will affect old school content creators who don’t want to learn 3.0/Udon. …And now they’re going to be forced if they want to continue making content in VRChat, starting in 2023 (via the VRCCC).
This is the second biggest “fuck you” from the VRChat devs in their (now tarnished
over EAC) history.
So as a 2.0 content creator, you only have two options to prepare for this;
1. Man up and try everything you can to update your content for 3.0. If your content cannot possibly work with 3.0 over how you feel your work is ‘barely held together by duct tape’ (aka BTD 3.5), then go with Option 2.
2. Upload your content to Chillout, and stay on this platform, or go back to VRChat with a public avatar (that’s hopefully 3.0). Then try to find a commission to replace your (now dead) 2.0 avatar, and then watch your paid avatar be stolen by an asshole and placed
on Ripper Store, and the VRChat devs do nothing about it because it “wasn’t a mod
so EAC works ‘perfectly'”.
…Please come on Chillout. Sure there’s less people, but we need more to make the community bigger.
As for me, this likely won’t affect me too much. Yes I’ll miss BTD when it was on VRChat and know my Drex is literally all I’ll have.. and I can’t fucking thank CEC Blender enough for doing that for me.
