Benie’s Space Station v3.1… cause of lock ups?!

Ok. I’ve made a surprising discovery. The latest revision of “Benie’s Space Station v3.1” seems to be causing Gmod to lock up in Single Player!

I made a separate install of Gmod. Got the bare bones of addons (AdvDupe, PHX, SBMP, Constraint Remover, Stacker, SmartSnap, and Wire) and tried to see if Gmod would crash in SP due to my crappy PSU.
I let it set for a few good hours. Not one lock up. So it either had to be an addon causing it, or my Space Station.
So I tried bringing my Space Station into it. Not sooner than 10 minutes after I spawn it… WHAM. Fortunately it did the “LOL COLOR FUCK UP!!” instead of a system failure.
This is telling me that my dupe is corrupted, somehow. I’m guessing from that fix due to the SVN update switching around all the SmallBridge models on me, that my Space Station uses.

However I’m not convinced. So far, Gmod SEEMS to be operating just like it did back before I got my 9500GT. So maybe the upgraded PSU did actually fix SOME of my lock up issue.
Why I say some, is because HL2:DM still is doing it. But from what I’ve seen, only does it on dm_resistance.
Back before when I had my old PSU, ANY map locked up on me. But now, I actually saw one of the bots hit the 100 kill mark!
Perhaps, this PSU wasn’t such a bad deal. However I need a better one next month. I’ve been looking at them all wrong. PSU’s are no different than any type of hardware. Higher price + Higher quality = Less lockups? πŸ™‚

Anyway, I’m going to try to re-run Gmod tomorrow with ALL of my addons, using my supposedly borked installation, and see if it locks up in SP. If it doesn’t for as long as I had it running… then it truly is my Space Station.
And if it is, either it’s corrupt, or it’s grown so big, my video card cannot .. lol, handle it’s epicness? I’ll have to see tomorrow.
If it is my station, then I have the option of simply rebuilding it. If the dupe went corrupt, the best choice of action would be to rebuild.

I’ll keep you guys posted on whatever turns up. I got more testing to do. But right now I’m heading to bed.

Back to square one / Bye-Bye DNF

Well I’m back after two and 1/2 days without a computer, but first I want to talk about something tragic that means alot to me.
3D Realms, the makers of the ass-kicking, women-loving, blond hair and sunglasses-wearing guy known as Duke Nukem, is no more. 3D Realms has closed it’s doors for good due to the recession, or some other reason that they just ran out of money.
This means the long-awaited “when it’s done” game. The game that seems like it would NEVER be released, much less have any news about it, is no longer in production.

Why this is such a big deal to me is because I will miss them dearly. 3D Realms not only made great games, but they helped to continue making FPS’ the way they are now. Not to mention having one of the first free map editing softwares available with the game, titled ‘BUILD’.
Duke3D is the game that it came with. Featuring a guy named Duke Nukem kicking alien ass in Los Angeles.
I remembered when I first got into BUILD. It was so complicated. But I began to learn about the building blocks that made up the game world, known as ‘Sectors’ and ‘Sprites’. I learned how to work with them. And soon I made a few maps, with several revisions of them. Why? Well, BUILD also had a tendency to want to crash when you least expect it. It can be triggered by putting a sprite outside of the game world, a sector getting all spazzy, bugged sectors(which happen alot).
Anyway, Duke3D was a great game. And it will be missed.

Now. As I have said I’ve been computerless for a few days. I went up to this computer repair place and asked them to do a diagnostics of my hardware. Had to wait ’till the next day to get the results.
Once they came in, it showed as nothing is wrong with my hardware. No viruses. No faulty hardware. No nothing. So it has to be the PSU. Unfortunately I had to wait another day to get a replacement. And so I finally get it back(today), get it home. Play a few games… and WHAM!! Lock up!
I felt lost and alone after that. But after some discussions with angry and his friend, I should now know my next course of action. Which is to say, never trust a computer repair company to give you a good PSU. In other words… I got ripped off! πŸ˜›
Not only that, but it sucks so much, there’s no brand name! All I got is the model number; LPK2-30.

So I’m going to start saving for another new PSU and have the money by June. But this time, once I get it, I’m going to install it myself. That’s right. It’s a very risky surgery. But I’m going to scrub in and do the job that’s needed. I’m looking through Google as I speak for a “Power Supply installation for Idiots” book. lol

As I’m saving for a PSU, I’m also going to look at this from a software level. Meaning, start randomly uninstalling and reinstalling games. The first game I’m going to start with is WoW, because it’s the last known game I was playing before it began to lock up in March. And here it’s May and I still haven’t figured out the true source of this issue.
If the software level fails of just uninstalling/reinstalling. Then it’s time to do the final … test.
El reformat-o. The most dreaded word in all of computer language. Pretty much a complete reformat of my system, starting from the basics. If it is truly a software-level issue, a reformat will kill it. It will also kill my spirit, since reformats are painful.
Such pain as “OH SHIT I FORGOT TO GET something here ON MY EXTERNAL!!!”

So that’s basically why I haven’t reported in on my “success” that the PSU was truly the culprit. I hope somewhere in the future, will I have this issue tied around my finger, then stabbed with a knife, burned with the breath of a dragon, and kicked out the door.

Maybe closer to isolating lock up issue

I went to a few people yesterday. One wanted to do a diagnostic on my system, but the guy that does it won’t be able to do it ’till Monday.

Anyway, I believe I’m closer to isolating the issue once and for all. It’s nearly a 100% chance that it is what’s fucking up.
I believe it’s my PSU(Power Supply Unit).
http://www.attictrunk.com/agips2posu351.html
(what it looks like. The serial number is identical except for an added W with this one)

Why? It hasn’t been upgraded since I got my computer back in 2005. I know I’ve seen it since then. The same shape. The same fan.

The other proof I got is the years of torment I’ve endured of my games locking up whenever it damn well pleases. Basically, my video cards. My Geforce 9400GT. I believe I know what made it go faulty. My PSU. Either that or it was faulty in the first place.
Upgrading to a 9500GT. Better card. Better maker. It’s causing my games to crash. Yet it didn’t do this on the first day. So it’s not faulty.
My PSU is only 350 Watt. That is not enough for my system. I need at least a 500+ Watt to get the full power of my hardware. So I’m missing 150 Watts.
And that 150 Watts is what’s causing my games to go LOL FUCK UP. It’s also why I can’t dual client in WoW.

It makes perfect sense! My 9500GT was worse because my PSU hasn’t been upgraded since I got this computer. It needs more juice from the PSU.

Rig’n’Roll, still alive and kicking

Decided to check out Rig’n’Roll.com, and there was actually an UPDATE since last year! Was done March 24th, 2009. The first update this year.
All I can say is… it’s about fucking time!! There hasn’t been any development updates since ’07, which made me think “well this game is dead”.

They say they’re… get this. STILL testing. Ugh. But at least I know it’s not dead, unlike DNF. They’re also stating how they’re having to cope with the recession — laying people off, lowering wages. But they state it will not affect the release date.
Speaking of the release date, Igor Belago says that “the game will actually be released in a couple of months, but I canÒ€ℒt name an actual date yet.”
Yeah… I’ll see it when I believe it, Igor. But I wish them luck in fixing all the bugs.
It’s better to have a bug-free game that will take longer to release, than have a released game, full of bugs.

And to prove that the game still isn’t dead, they’ve released a collection of ingame screenshots. In Russian, of course. You can download their collection at the bottom of the news page.
What I can see from the pictures, is just… “wow”. And the map… all of those ramps that are accessible… it’ll be like taking a vacation to San Francisco, without actually going there.

I’ll tell you guys one thing. If they allow you to start in a city, I’m picking Sacramento as my base, or start area. Whatever they do. And then, I’m going to ride the famous I-80 ALL the way to San Francisco.
Or maybe even better. Start at Reno, and then head West on I-80.
The possibilities are endless. Lets just hope we can do it. πŸ™‚

My thoughts of Spore… the hate, and the like

I’ve been playing Spore for a couple of days now. So far it seems it gets more difficult, and frustrating as you advance through the stages; from the Cell stage to the Space stage.
Lets go through them all…

The first one, Cell stage. This one is the easiest. You start as a cell, eating plankton(as a Carnivore), or seaweed(as a Herbavore), with avoiding to be eaten yourself. Occasionally you mate to evolve and grow your cell until eventually, you’re big enough to sprout legs and walk on land in the Creature stage.

The Creature stage, 2nd stage. This one was really difficult for me, with one of those difficulties being to slowly evolve my cell into what is known as a dragon. I suck at sculpting. πŸ™
The 2nd thing was finding food. As a Carnivore, you have to either hunt the species of other nests and eventually wipe them out, or eat from a corpse. But what I don’t get is there’s hardly any consequence. If you don’t wipe them out, why don’t they grow with you into the next stage instead of having brand new creatures?
And there’s the impressing of other nests to become your ally that pretty much requires your existing allies. You got to hope your social skills are higher or at par with the one you’re trying to impress.
And if that’s not enough, you got to live in fear of Epic creatures randomly roaming around, terrorizing other nests. And finding these bones to evolve your creature and your species.
Eventually though, and I’ve finally completed it, your creature learns how to use tools and advances into the Tribal stage.

Tribal stage, 3rd stage. Your species now can talk due to your bigger brains. You’re somewhat more civilized than in the Creature stage, working as a team to bring down a nest and taking the food back to the village, or sending a few of them fishing.
The object of the Tribal stage is to keep a good supply of food, as it’s your currency of this stage. And also, to befriend or destroy the other villages. As you advance, you can expand your tribe. It’s a good idea to do so especially when one of them decides to attack your village.
You can have up to 12 tribe members, which includes the Chieftain. Once you’re able to complete this stage, your creatures will prepare to live life as sentient beings, and take over the planet. Then you will move on to Civ stage.

Civilization stage, 4th stage. One thing I don’t get is every city, is occupied with your species. Did you wipe them all out in the Tribal stage? Or by completing the Tribal stage, show your dominance and tell the other creatures to leave your planet?
If you did good in Tribal stage, your city will be a Economist city, All you have to do is pay your way into the hearts of the other cities, establish trade routes, spam hordes of vehicles and get them going to butter them up enough to buy the city, and boom, you win easily. And soon, you’re ready for the final stage as your species gets to work on a spaceship, for you!

Space stage, 5th stage. Depending on what you have selected, a ship comes out of the tower, and you control it! You’re put on a series of tests to get a feel of the new stage, and eventually sent on missions by your homeworld to colonize other planets…. and that’s where things get rather overwhelming for me. Soon as you leave your planet, you can see your sun and the planets revolving around it. Further out still and you get the big picture. And I mean big. Thousands, if not millions of suns and planets await you in this humongous Spore galaxy.
The object of the Space stage is pretty much that you sell spice to other planets to make them your allies.. or destroy them. You can terraform planets, and make them your own by colonizing them. You can go anywhere you want, as long as it’s within range of your warp drive system. But don’t go too far as there’s hostile aliens out there who have an itchy trigger finger.
You’re supposed to earn badges; lots of them. They will help increase your ship’s weapon systems, range of the star systems you can warp to, and get new terraforming tools.
Occasionally, on some planets, you can get objects popping up on the planet that you can use your sonar to find them, and your abduction beam to pull them into your ship’s cargo hold.
And on random, but quite frequent occasions, your planet or your colonies are under attack by space pirates. And you alone have to defend your species. It gets rather annoying.

I found the Space stage very hard and frustrating without a helping hand to show where to go and what to do. It just…fucking pisses me off how I hear “Oh god you suck I’ve completed this game in 6 hours!”. IF it was an FPS like FarCry with a god mode cheat, then yes.
Because here you are, all alone, in space, trying to colonize. And being told to colonize 6 planets, AND have to be near the center of the galaxy. The fuck?!

But, amongst the hate, there is parts I like and found so adorable for words. Parts in the Creature stage, Tribal stage, and Space stage.
For the Creature stage, it’s funny how other nest creatures look at you suspiciously, if your a friend or a foe. And if you go idle on your creature, he’ll turn around and smile at you.
The Tribal stage… so hilarious. I don’t know what’s more funny with looking at your tribe. The “get owned!” song, them shoving eachother and laughing about it, or hearing them laugh evilly when hunting.
And, the Space stage, when your hovering over your cities or colonies, watching your species cheer and dance when they see you. Or hearing the frightened screams of creatures when they see your ship and run.

Forum cleanup

From pic links to text fixes, the dragon is being slain and replaced with a new attitude.
AKA, I’m removing everything dragon from the forum.

The ‘The Dragon World’ board has been moved to the new Archived Threads/Boards..board. So you’ll still be able to read it. I just won’t be adding to it since it’s now an archive.

Seemed to be locked out of my own forum

I’ve been trying to edit the theme for the forum, and now, all I’m seeing is…

Maintenance

Working on the forums. Come back later.

I don’t know what to think right now. All I did was Preview the YaBB theme, and this happens.
I’m currently talking with simplemachines in hopes of fixing this problem and getting the forum back online.

Shit…now I have a real problem. Either I fucked something up or GoDaddy did. They told me to run this repair tool that will fix the issues, but it claims there’s a problem with the MySQL settings.
Why… WHY!?!?!?! What the hell did I do to cause the forum to do this?!
I changed no settings. All I did was preview a theme and WHAM. Forum goes down.

If I had access to my GoDaddy account info, I could check it’s MySQL settings and see if there’s anything screwed up. But I don’t. And angry once again is with his father for the weekend…

HOLY… I don’t know how. But the forum is back online! Looks like GoDaddy fucked it up!
Thank GOD!! That scared the crap out of me. Now I can get back to work.
