Violent Weather / I have a Base

Woke up this morning, and noticed how… dark it was, and it was 10:47 in the morning, yet, it looked like it was in the evening. I heard what sounded like just a regular little thunderstorm. But something wasn’t right.

10:55 in the morning, a massive bow echo moves in, bringing 70MPH winds, flooding rain from 1 to 5″ an hour, and alot of lightning. Just under 6,000 bolts.
Once it passed, it really left it’s mark. Though we got no damage, other parts of the city and especially Louisville was dealing with flooded roads, and power lines down.
According to the local weather, this monster started in Iowa, and kept going for hundreds of miles, and a truckload of storm reports as it marched it’s way towards us.
Tomorrow could see more severe weather. But it should stay north of us, and come overnight into Saturday.
This was just one of the wild, but scary pictures of when the storm moved in;

This is what’s known as a “Shelf Cloud“. The leading edge of the line that went though the area, taken by a viewer from WHAS11(one of the local channels here) from Charlestown, IN, around 10:45AM. When you see this, high winds of 70MPH are likely. And notice how it just turns day into night.
They showed video of the lightning, striking the Ohio River, and a few buildings in Downtown Louisville.
What was so eerie about these clouds… they’re the same ones you see before a fucking tornado drops out of the sky. Dark, low-hanging, greenish clouds. Scared the crap out of me.

.
In other news. I now finally have a solid base on how much to save up for. I talked to the guy that installed my computer, and he gave me all the prices I needed.
Though it’s more than will have for the end of this month. So I’m forced to wait ’till August to have the money.
This means no TS3… so, I gotta wait. So I might as well make the best of it to make the waiting less strenuous, by trying to play my old games.
I keep forgetting how I didn’t let this issue stop me when I was trying to replace my PSU before.

Banned again…

I got banned today on Facepunch, for one day, for the reason; “Keeps making threads in the wrong section. Think next time.”
The thread in question is a thread that was approved by one of the elder mods… the irony. What wasn’t approved was where I posted it. I posted it in the Hardware/Software forum.
Apparently my “Guys… can’t you teach me how to compare hardware” thread was supposed to be in the Tech Support forum.
Tell me. Who in the right mind thinks a ‘help me learn’ request belongs in the Tech Support forum? There is OTHER kinds of help requests, that have NOTHING to do with Tech Support!!

That’s…. that’s it. I’m done asking Facepunch for help with my lock up issue. I’m going to [H]ard|Forum.com for help. If I get banned from that, then I’ll go to another PC Help site. If I get banned for that, then I’ll go to another..and another…and another.

Does this mean I’m done with Facepunch all together? No. Just with the Hardware/Software section. I’m still pissed over this stupid ban that I didn’t do anything wrong except made a mistake of not knowing if it should go in Tech Support or not.
So to keep it from happening again, I’ll just stop posting in that section.

Fortunately, I still have BeaverMon, my main. It’s not against the rules to post on another account while your other account is banned. I can use him to post my “Help me with my lock up issue!” thread to [H]ard|Forum.com. However I’m having a hard time thinking of how to explain it to a non-Gmod based forum.

If it’s not bad enough. Either it’s my cable modem having one of it’s slow speed episodes, or Facepunch is REALLY slow tonight.

A setback in getting new hardware

*sigh* I saw gop on today, and asked him about this thing I saw on [H]ard|Forum.com about picking out the PSU for you. What to look for. I didn’t understand one damn thing on that page.
He looked at them and said that these pages are outdated. So I asked him “Where do I go to look around”, and he acts like he’s tired of me asking questions, and wants me to make my own decisions…

Now if I saw somebody else doing this, I would probably say to him; “It’s not that hard. Just look around in Google for something”… yet, this is happening to me. I cannot make these decisions. I fail at making decisions! The only good decisions I ever made was in games. Never hardware.
I wouldn’t know the first damn thing to look for, let alone know how much I’m willing to spend for it. I would also have to know how old it is, and… god damn what the fuck did I get myself into?!?!

I WISH I NEVER GOT MY HARDWARE UPGRADED!!! Then I wouldn’t be in this fucking mess!! Even the graphic glitching wasn’t as bad as this lock up issue! With the graphic glitching, all I had to do was just, minimize, and maximize it. And it’s fixed!
This… this can’t be temp fixed.. or any kind of fixed. Infact, it’ll never BE fixed!!!

“So why not just save up to get a new computer?”. It’s not as easy as it sounds. No one cares how much suffering I’m going though, not being able to play my games, without fear of it locking up on me. And I have to go through this, day after day, month after month.
And getting a hobby is out of the question! So is getting a job.
Do you know how long it’s been since I played WoW? I’ve even tried to convince myself of the progress I’ve made, with this lock up issue. How I didn’t let it stop me. And now I am, and I don’t know why.

*deep sigh* All I can do is wait ’till tomorrow, and call “Bob” (I call him that instead of ‘the guy that built my computer’) and ask him, how come he hasn’t responded to my emails. And I gotta do this in a nice way too.
“Bob” is the only hope I got now. If he can’t help me… I’m SOL(Shit Outa Luck). But I’m pretty sure he can. Maybe he forgot that I did send them.

And I do have another option. Not a good one, but an option nonetheless. Asking Facepunch on how can I compare hardware that would be dumbed down to my low IQ (90-92 is my IQ) so I can understand it and make my own decisions.
Even if it was to get a book called “Hardware Comparing for Dummies”, I’d read it.

I guess the main thing is I keep thinking what caused this damn thing to happen in the first place, instead of looking into the future and finding something that not only would fix my issue, but I would keep for a long time.
I keep thinking the only reason I’m buying this shit is to fix my issue. When it’s much more than that. It can also be to get better graphics. Faster gameplay. And a more reliable system.
At least replacing my Video Card will definitely fix one issue. It will allow me to dual-client again in WoW.

And the only reason I’m replacing my PSU is to get a respectable name brand one, like Enermax, or Antec.

Latest on the lock up

I don’t know what’s worse. Waiting ’till July to afford a PSU I may not need, or not knowing what video card to get.
I’ve been questioning if my PSU is still part of the problem to Facepunch, and [H]ard|Forum.com. On Facepunch, I found something that shocked the hell out of me. I found out that it doesn’t matter how much a PSU costs, it matters what brand name you get.
On [H]ard|Forum.com, I asked them the same question, and they told me the same thing, and recommend to get a name brand PSU. Well, that’s ok with me. I was planning to anyway. Infact, I should’ve bought that damn PSU for $130 when I had the chance, instead of paying for that diagnostic that I didn’t even need, that didn’t even do anything to get me closer to finding out the culprit.
On top of that, he told me to check out this sticky on what PSU’s they don’t recommend. I checked it out, and it looks like every brand out there was listed in the “not recommended” list… that’s not helpful at all.

Once again I’m up the creek without a paddle. I’m getting answers to questions I don’t need answers to, and the ones I do need answers, I’m not getting jack shit.
If only I could get those other questions answered, then I would finally have a base to work with, and feel like saving is no big deal.

There was another piece of this puzzle that was having a hard time to fit, but fits now. And that is my UPS(Un-interruptible Power Supply). I got it the day I got my computer, back in 2005. It serves as basically the thing I turn on to turn my computer on. Provides electricity to the computer. I was wondering if it’s compatible with my hardware. Or if it had a short.
So I tried plugging everything to a strip, and tried out FarCry 1. It locked up the second I turned the corner and stared into that room.
Something tells me FarCry 1 is… too old for my computer now? It worked fine on my old hardware.
I know another game that worked fine on my old hardware. But it doesn’t lock up like the others. It crashes. And that game is Counter-Strike: Condition Zero – Deleted Scenes.

The Sims 3… to get it or not

The release of The Sims 3 has long passed us. I’ve seen a few pictures of it. And the first thing I said was “This looks like TS2!”.
Constantly I put my foot down to get this game. It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about buying a game instead of buying a video card.

Well. This was until I saw this thread on Facepunch of people posting their pics. I decided to take a look. First thing I noticed was you can now freely rotate furniture, just like you can do in RL. So that’s cool. The graphics haven’t improved, but the features have. I even stopped on a picture of seeing in a corner… a car. Do we have drivable cars now… without getting a shitload of EP’s? Apparently so.

Sims also have received a facelift. They look more.. human now. Fat guys look more fat now, and it looks like the CAS(Create-A-Sim) system has improved too.

What’s stopping me from buying it? Three things. Lock up issue. Money, and…. one other thing. A thing I keep forgetting after saying “Wow”. It’s… the past. My past sim life. Do I really wanna recreate my house like I did in the past, just play with it for awhile, and then be bored in a half an hour and question why did I buy it, when all I did in TS2… was live on my own? Treated TS2 like a modified 3D version of a House Creator?

I used to enjoy tearing down and rebuilding, over and over, because I was never happy with the design. And now… I’m all “meh”. You see in the past with The Sims 1, and in TSO, I.. well. I have a confession to make….
Back then was when I was sooo obsessed with TAB, and created Norb and Dag as sims, and even the dam to the best of my abilities. I also made myself to live with them.
Had so much fun trying to re-enact episodes of TAB using it. And that time where I gave Dag a love potion by accident, and he fell inlove with a sim, and I thought I would have to move him out, and it would pretty much ruin everything.
Those where some good times. Me and Norb where such good friends. I could always count on him to make me feel better. But I cannot recreate those touching memories now. TAB has been dead for a long time, and my obsession for that show attempts to live on.

All attempts to bring it back end up in failure. When I first heard of TS2, I thought that I would be able to create my house, then Norb and Dag’s house, and look out the window and yell “Hey, neighbor!”.
I wonder if this is possible in TS3, to walk beyond your lot boundary.. without going to the ‘Where do you want to go?’ screen. If it is, I will so get this game.

I honestly don’t know much about it. But I’m slowly starting to learn. However, I got more important things to take care of before I start buying games again.

If I do decide to get this, I’m going to have to make a decision. Video Card… or this game? I cannot afford both this month. In my opinion, and what my common sense is telling me, go for a video card.
But something is telling me.. “Ben. You’ll never get this thing fixed. You’re wasting too much money to fix it already, and you still don’t truly know what’s causing it. Just get the game.”

Lock Up testing

I tried this new thing called “Google Gadgets”, similar to “Yahoo! Widgets”. Basically little addons you can place on your Desktop.
I got this standard stopwatch thingy. I want a Desktop Stopwatch that I can activate the second I run a game, just to truly see how long it takes to lock up. The stopwatch would freeze up the exact second the lock up issue strikes, giving me the exact time.
I’m also writing down these lock up times using Visual Page, to give me an idea of what the lock up issue is doing.

Anyway, the other reason I posted this entry is because I made another surprising discovery. I played Super Mario 64, and it locked up within the first 33 minutes and 31 seconds of first turning it on.
Played Calamity, and it locked up again at exactly 1 minute and 50 seconds.

Calamity, and any game that has a main menu can’t be counted right. What I mean is, in order to get an accurate reading of how long it takes, as soon as I click to launch the game, I got my stopwatch, and I have to wait for the splash screens to pass, then load, then the main menu.
The time it takes to hit New Game or Load Game is also added to the time it takes to lock up, which gives an inaccurate reading.
So, why not just start the stopwatch the second I start a new game? This is tricky, and even harder when I have force-fullscreen games like Crysis and Fallout 3, and even harder in Crysis Warhead with it’s constant vehicle battles, and me having to toggle v_goliathmode on and off constantly out of game to keep from failing.

Anyway, I wanted to see if the main menu would lock up if I just let it sit there for as long as it took for SM64 to lock up. It surpassed this. So I resetted my stopwatch, and hit the New Game button and restarted my stopwatch.
When I hit 1 minute and 50 seconds mark.. no lock up. Played longer… and longer… it surpassed SM64’s lock up mark, all the way through beating the fucking game, with NO lock ups!!
It took 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 27 seconds to beat it from start to finish. Of course I had god mode on.
But what’s more important — NO LOCK UP!!!!!! Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zip! .. Wtf?

Am I thinking what I think I’m thinking? Is my lock up issue… dieing? Is it struggling to stay alive, but failed to piss me off in Calamity? (shakes his head) I’m not convinced it’s dead. If it was truly dead, then ALL of my games, nomatter how long I play them, would be lock up free.
It’s just as I feared though. Something that was on my hard drive is contributing to the lock up issue. Trouble is, finding it. I got thousands, if not tens of thousands of files and folders. Any one of them could be the culprit. And there also could be more than one file causing it. Multiple files… folders…games could be causing it.
It’s pretty much looking for a non-sharp needle in a haystack the size of an 18 wheeler.

I’m still planning to get a video card. But for the software-level issue, the only thing I can do is just reinstall one game at a time, see which one starts fucking up the others, and I’ll have my culprit.

Reformat completed. Lock up issue still not fixed

Just got done reformatting. It took like 15-20 minutes, but it was worth it.
I had to reinstall Half-Life 2, and the Source SDK Base, to play Calamity again to see if it will lock up. But first, I played with one of my Emulators.
Now an emulator isn’t something I like to talk about on the web. With the discussions about them being… illegal if you don’t own the original game. But anyway, long before I reformatted my drive, I played Super Mario 64. Now it locked up the same way as FarCry 1 and Calamity. Not even Emulators are safe!

After the reformat, and as I was reinstalling HL2, I played Super Mario 64 again. And… IT DIDN’T LOCK UP! 😀
Finally playing Calamity now. I just got past the first part, with NO LOCK UPS! 😀 So I go into the next part, and.. LOL FUCK UP!!!

So… it’s not fixed. It’s my video card. However, it didn’t lock up within the first minute and 50 seconds after launching the game. Now I don’t know.
The software-level issue is probably contributing to the main lock up issue. So it looks like I have a side issue, with the main issue. A double whammy, if you will.
This means that this issue is going to be even harder to pinpoint than before. It could be any file…folder…game… anything, that was originally on the E drive before reformatting.

Playing Super Mario 64 again, I’m seeing the same thing with Calamity, again. This time, instead of locking up within the first minute and 50 seconds, it locks up within the first half of an hour! D:

There is a light at the end of this long-ass tunnel though. Angry has sent me a check for $100, half of what he owes me back from the times in Wurm where I gave him money. I should get it sometime this week. With this, I should be able to afford that shiny new video card I’ve been talking about in an earlier entry.

It was fate that brought me to Newegg. Because I wanted to be “one of the cool kids”.

A new issue to tackle, reformatting my E drive

I’ve been putting it off all damn day today. I stupidly asked Facepunch “is it safe to do it?”. That wasn’t my only question. I was concerned what Windows would do to find it again.
And it turns out, all I have to do is get into DOS, and type “format E:/” or something like that, then wait, and it’s done!

So, now I know HOW to reformat. But there’s a new issue… how in the fuck am I going to MOVE my crap off of my E drive?! ALL of my games are stored on that drive, including a whopping 96GB Steam folder.

Though I have decided just before I typed the title to this entry, that I’m going to try to just uninstall my games, one by one, and just backup my savegames and settings. This should ease the stress on me of what I have to move to one of my two other drives.
First, I have to get them installed in the registry before I can uninstall. And that won’t be easy. Some games will go “NO! You must reinstall me!” instead of “Hang on. Giving you access to game”.

For the nay-sayers (maybe like WoW) I’ll just have to look around and backup what I can remember that needs to be saved so I won’t lose my personal data.
The 2nd thing I need to be concerned with, is space on my two drives. Will I have enough space on either of them to copy the contents from a large 250GB drive, that’s only half full?
Well. That’s what the uninstall should take care of. Steam will always allow me to reinstall my games, anytime I need to. As for EA Download Manager, it’s the same thing.. I think. I don’t know if it will still allow me to reinstall after so many months. If not, this means, no Crysis and Crysis Warhead.

The reformat of the E drive should be flawless, and will not need help.

There is one other thing I’m worried about. Deeply worried. Once the reformat is over, and I get my crap back on… I fear I’m just going to put back what’s fucking up my games again.
“Just install Steam and a game, then play it” you might say. Ok. Lets say it doesn’t lock up. Yayness.
Then I go to put my stuff back, play again, and “LOL FUCK UP”.
Not only will that sicken me, that means it could be ANY game, folder, or file causing it. Or multiple files. I do NOT wanna think this!

In a way, I WANT it to lock up after installing just one game after reformatting. This will prove to me it is indeed a hardware issue, and it’s pointing to my video card, and NOT what was on my E drive.

I will try all of this tomorrow. It’s too late to do it now.

Reinstallation of Windows completed

No it didn’t take me hours until I responded by typing this. I just never gotten around to it.
I can’t say the reinstall was flawless. There was a .. few.. problems. Some of them where worked out easily, but others.. others needed extra help from a friend of mine.

But here I am. I still got some more work to do, getting everything back to normal. It has fixed the “Windows booting slower than normal” issue. But has it fixed my lock up issue? .. Well… for now. I say it’s another annoying “temp fix”, and it’ll be back griefing me.
However, this isn’t something I have done. The last time there was a reinstallation of Windows, was when I had my new hardware installed. And that was… hmmm…. 6-7 months ago? Anything could’ve been downloaded that started fucking up my games by then. I still say it’s my video card causing it.

But.. something just doesn’t make sense about that though. The day before I reinstalled Windows, angry was asking me if I watch movies on my computer, and yes I do, and told him I use PowerDVD to watch them. Then he asks me “What’s the longest movie you’ve watched before it locks up?”, and I said “Videos are immune to the lock up issue.”
Videos are supposed to really put a strain on the GPU. Yet, they don’t cause any lock ups. So there’s a possibility it could just be a software-related issue.

Since the reinstallation of Windows was.. somewhat successful, I feel slightly confident to get everything I wanna keep off of my E drive, and reformat it. When, I don’t know right now. I don’t know if it’s even safe to do so.

Reinstalling Windows tomorrow

This could be computer ordeal #3 if I fuck this up. Fortunately I’ve been doing alot of studying on the subject of what to do, when, and where.

So sometime tomorrow I will do it. Reformat to reinstall Windows XP. Why? I’ve stated that Windows is booting slower than normal. And according to the guy that built my computer, this should fix it.

Will this fix my lock up issue as well? I find this doubtful, but slightly probable. I’m only doing it to get Windows back to the way it was. Why don’t I just repair Windows instead of reinstall?
(shrug) Well. I dunno actually. But if it fixes it, I’m all for it.

I made a list of instructions and printed it so I can check them off as I go when I don’t have access to Windows. What I’ve seen, this seems easy as 1, 2, 3.

The only things I’m worried about are, unplugging my internal secondary drive(to be on the safe side), and wiping out the partition and creating a new one. Both of these may do irreversible damage to my computer. And I have no money to cover my losses this time.

If this is successful (which I don’t see why it wouldn’t), I’m going to crank it up a notch by saying “my lock up issue is software level, so I’m going to wipe out the E drive!”. Doing the E drive will be a much more daunting task. More files will have to be moved, including entire directory structures.
