Happy New Year from Benie’s Builds

2010 really flew by, didn’t it? I was thinking of having the “Best posts of 2010” in here, but I would have to setup a poll and since hardly anyone views this blog, it would be dumb to.

So… um… have a Happy New Year, and hope 2011 will be better for all of us. All I can say for this.

Health concerns

The irony of this post.. clicking on it shows the “leet” number.

Anyway, I’ve been unsure if I should post this or not but I feel I should. Since late November I’ve been having issues with my head. Pain, pressure, dizziness, and having neck pain.
Fortunately the issues haven’t gotten any worse since then. Just yesterday I went to get what I felt was my first MRI.
I was taken into this large room with a bed and a large device over it, where I laid down and they put a mask over my face. I could barely see out of it. For what seemed like 15 minutes I had to sit there, motionless as the large machine made a whole lot of noise over my head.
And then I was injected with some kind of thing to give the MRI a better reading. I never saw the needle because of the mask. More scanning was done, then they removed the mask and I went home.
Unfortunately now I notice there’s like a really small… rash I think where I got the injection. I hope it clears up soon. It doesn’t hurt or itch though.

Tomorrow I have to make an appointment for my doctor since the results from the MRI will be in, and I have to go to him to know what’s wrong with me.
While I’m there I can explain my small rash to the doctor to see if it’s perfectly normal or not.
This “injection site reaction”, what I believe it is anyway, could just be a normal side effect.

My mother, even the doctor believe I just have severe sinus issues. The fact I haven’t passed out, thrown up, memory loss or any other serious thing, that whatever it is, is easily treatable with medication.
But the fact everything they tried to give me isn’t working, I just don’t know.

I feel deep down inside this is going to be serious and require hospitalization. I also fear I’m going to be forced to change my lifestyle. But I guess that’s just my nerves talking.

I will pray to god before I go to bed, just like I did before my MRI. He will save me and keep me alive.
I just hope I’m able to sleep tonight.

New “Benie’s Games Blog”, now live

Roughly two weeks ago I thought of this idea of combining my WoW and Wurm blogs into one blog, to remove the need for so many blogs.

Now it’s finally ready.. for the most part. Angry still wants me to take over moving my Gmod/Minecraft posts in this blog by setting the categories.
I feel this is a step in the right direction, except when angry did more than I asked by removing all the “tacky”, as in the links I had setup for creating a blog and shit.
He wants me to go the extra mile by logging in, going to my Control Panel, and then making the dumb post. When before I could just click the link for making a new blog post and go right to posting.

SMP Bug Fix #2 / Notch Wants YOU! (if you’re a coder)

The second bug fix for SMP got released today. Unfortunately, and apparently the talk about not forcing the client to update has gone out the window. The client still auto-updates. Sucks…
The post about the update seems to only focus about the player disappearing when dying from a mob, and invisible mobs. Just a bunch of mumbo jumbo.
Another update will be released “early next week”. I’m not going to hold my breath here.
I’ll tell you one thing. I feel sorry for the people that didn’t backup their 1.2.2 version minecraft.jars. Three updates in just three days have kept modders busy, and others begging Notch to stop updating so they can update their mods.

Also today, Notch posted a blog entry completely made in Swedish. Saying if you didn’t speak it, pretend it’s a post about something he recently bought.
But, Google Translate says otherwise. It’s actually a request for coders to come work for him.
Here’s the translated blog post from Swedish to English, if you’re too lazy to translate it yourself.

Angry is turning out to be quite a good programmer, and he’s planning to move to Sweden. Sadly he’s too young to get a job right now.

Happy Thanksgiving from Benie’s Builds / Back to back SMP updates

So yeah. Happy Thanksgiving. Hope you have a good one. It’s been raining all day today here in southern Indiana.
I personally was hoping Notch would make a Turkey animal in Minecraft. But SMP is more important right now.

Speaking of SMP, I was browsing minecraftforum.net, checking the thread of Hey0’s server mod. I had my server up last night. Angry was in it and searched around while I was forced to stay out due to not wanting to update my client. He told me I could simply backup minecraft.jar, grab the update and join him with broken mods.
Then when I’m done, I can restore the .jar I backed up and still keep my mods in SSP. That worked with no problems.
However, hey0 has a problem. It’s been updated for the new 0.2.5 server version, but when you boot the server up it immediately shuts down. And I’m not alone in that.

As I was saying, today after watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and saw Santa Claus riding into town, I was checking hey0. No fix for the issue I’m having. As I’m reading, someone mentions “Minecraft has been updated again!”, my brain is thinking “What WHAT?! ANOTHER UPDATE?!”

I ran to Notch’s Blog and sure enough, he’s released an update today. I believe he’s fixed players disappearing (but not completely), and dying when you spawn. This is just one of two updates he’s planning to release, with the second being tomorrow.

He also mentions something that nearly makes me piss my pants. He’ll make a thing where the client will ask you “Do you want to update?” instead of automatically updating when you launch it.
I jumped for joy when I read that. No more will I be forced to unplug my cable modem to play with unbroken mods! 😀

Notch is now awesome in my book. He’s thinking smart.

Minecraft: Another worthless update, focuses on PvP

I am so fucking ENRAGED right now. The update didn’t fix shit in SMP. All it did was give us worthless PvP. What about fixing minecarts?!
Also, no-animals has been changed to spawn-animals for no reason. I guess it’s to make it easier to understand.

He also tried to fix leaves, but mentions about some kind of infinite loop so he had to disable them again. But that was the only bug he tried to fix that broke with the three updates.

But this gave me a chance to see if freezing minecraft.jar will allow me to play without broken mods. The answer is NO. It will still try to update, but be unable to write to the .jar and make you unable to play.
So now I have three options;
1. Update, wait for updates to mods for days just to see them break again next Friday.
2. Play offline, causing Minecraft not to update and no broken mods. Have to do this EVERY FUCKING TIME I want to play until Notch releases a worthy update.
3. Play another game until Notch releases a worthy update. Will get boring waiting for a worthy update.

I think I’m going to go for #2. I’m not going to bore myself to death while waiting for another BUG FIX instead of a fucking feature I don’t give a shit about.

And I got shit to do in MCEdit. I have to convert all of my Mynecraft schematics for Alpha use. My biggest challenge probably had to be that big house I made in the ‘residential’ map. But there could be even worse ones in the future. I’ll get them all, though. Unlike Notch, I do bug fixing.

I’m not the only one tired of these lame updates that all they do is break your mods and leave hardly anything in return. This thread here has some good pointers here. What we expect from Notch, and the others saying we should had never expected a stable game. I can’t really say much about it.

Notch: Update released tomorrow

He was going to release it today, but mentions forgetting some keystone with a private certificate key to his office.
He’s set the alarm on his phone to make sure he takes it.

So, prepare to have broken mods by tomorrow. The way he seems to talk about PvP more than what he’s fixed what was broken with these three patches makes me kinda sick to my stomach, and enraged.

But I got to remember, all of these fixes have to do with SMP. I play SSP. That means only a few changes affect me. Damage and Minecarts work perfectly in SSP.
One change does affect both, and that’s getting leaves decaying again like they should instead of needing a mod.

I’ve also just got done sending Notch a friendly letter with two toggable suggestions for SSP. No Animals, and Time of Day. I don’t expect him to add them in, but I’m hoping he’ll think about it.

Minecraft: Still no update, new “Hardcore” difficulty mentioned

I was sure the update will be today, because he said “early next week”. And how early can you get than Monday? I guess tomorrow (Tuesday) is the mod-breaking day.

Today’s news in Notch’s Blog mentions an article from PC Gamer. One of the authors spices up the difficulty of the game by one rule; if he dies, he has to delete the map.

Notch actually likes this idea and is planning to put it in.
I played in Hard difficulty recently, just to see how it’s like, and it’s pretty wild. The reason is I found out that if you use INVedit to put armor on you and give it a high negative damage number, you pretty much have a form of “god mode” in SSP.
So I wanted to test it out, and it works beautifully. And I got to see what it’s like dealing with Creepers.

But this so-called Hardcore mode… I think it should be called “Insane” mode. I’m not going to risk weeks if not months of work of my transit system to one death of myself.
Still, that’s a pretty good idea. It’ll keep people wanting more.

UPDATE: Notch has been playing Fallout New Vegas instead of releasing the update, nor has he posted anything about what day he’s releasing it. Now it looks like it won’t be until this Friday.
He’s still talking about getting PvP working, though.

You maybe wondering “Wow, you’re selfish. Notch does have a life other than Minecraft”. And I may sound it. I just want him to release the update and get it over with.

It’ll give me an excuse to play Wurm. I’m getting too addicted to Minecraft again and I need this update to get me to play another game.

No update today, will be released early next week

And Notch said from up high, “Frukta inte, Benie! Du kommer att kunna spela med un-brutet mods över helgen! Ingen uppdatering kommer att släppas förrän nästa vecka!”
Which translates from Swedish to “Fear not, Benie! You will be able to play with un-broken mods over the weekend! No update will be released until next week!”

Just to say for the people that actually believe the “god of Minecraft” has spoken to me, he hasn’t. It came from the asskissers in Notch’s Blog trying to make a “Bible of Minecraft” of all things.
There’s playing his game and enjoying it, and then there’s wanting to kiss his ass.

Not to mention, he’s doing things I like with this one. Such as;
1. Delayed update means more play time without broken mods (as I mentioned).
2. Fixing bugs in SMP created from the last three updates. Yes he’s focusing on PvP which IMO I don’t personally like (but he will set it where you can say NO to it in your server). However, allowing damage will allow you to kill idiot animals, and remove minecarts and boats.
With damage, SMP will finally get the “S” back in Survival. Be like SSP, but with Multiplayer. I just hope he never gets rid of the ‘/give’ command.

That means he does care about getting SMP working good. Even with what little time he has to code in his busy life. This is what he has listed as being fixed, and what he’s currently working on.
And this is probably the best fix of all; “Make players riding carts or boats a long way receive terrain updates: DONE”

He’s also hiring help to extend the speed SMP gets fixed. One of the new workers has introduced himself to Notch’s Blog, here. He also links this Minecraft Quiz.
I got 7/10 right. The three I missed had to do with knowing your developers, and one I should had known but I haven’t played legit in weeks, and I’m not ashamed of it. 🙂
It’s the way I play now. INVedit FTW! 😀

Notch is also encouraging people to report bugs and give him suggestions via #minecraft, the IRC channel.

It’s time to play… Guess The Bugs!

Is the bug that will break more than fix, in Update #1, Update #2, or Update #(random number here)?!
Who knows, but tomorrow is coming. I actually should be used to it by now.

These broken mods are just like WoW. Everytime there’s an update to that game (including the upcoming Cataclysm EP), most if not all the 50+ addons I had installed break.
What do I do? Well, unlike Minecraft, you can play with broken mods. Sometimes only some features are broken. Since WoW doesn’t have a section dedicated to addons which Minecraft’s does, I have to search Google for updates on various WoW Addon sites.

But here’s the thing that separates WoW from Minecraft in modding (and it’s not “Minecraft is still in Alpha”). Notch hasn’t released the modding tools (aka the SDK) to the community yet. He’s waiting ’till Minecraft goes into Beta, meaning SMP is working flawlessly (AHAHA… right). When or IF Minecraft will go into Beta is unknown. But I imagine possibly by version 1.0.0 of the server. Since we currently have version 0.2.4, it’s going to be a long and grueling time of constant broken mods every Friday.

Already the posters of angry’s Skype chatroom are sick and tired of me whining and carrying on about something I can’t do shit about (I really don’t blame them). Due to this, I stopped complaining (to them).

After the “delightful” conversations I got from them, I wondered if there’s a way to freeze minecraft.jar (make it Read Only) from updating, which will keep the client from updating, which will ultimately keep my mods from breaking. In theory it should work.
So I asked the forum. No one has tried it and even questioned why I would want to do such a thing, as I never stated the reason. It should be obvious to them that it’s to avoid mod-breaking worthless updates (the 11-10-10 update wasn’t worthless, just troublesome, and it caused me to have an unending migraine)!

To hopefully stop any future migraines, I’ve already mapped out what I plan to do when tomorrow comes.
1. Check Notch’s Blog on my phone. See if an update has been posted, and what’s been fixed/changed.
2. After Friday chores, get on the forum and check my mods for updates.
2a. If no updates have been posted and people are saying to “be patient”, play offline (or freeze minecraft.jar) until mods get updated.
3. Update mods and stay in SSP. SMP is “broken” to me until Notch brings Minecraft into Beta. No exceptions.
4. Don’t list overused, stupid “???” “PROFIT!” meme.

With this plan, I cannot fail. I’m not going to check the forum for what broke in the update. I already KNOW shit will break in it (this game is still in Alpha), and reading it will increase stress I don’t need.

IMHO, Alpha should had never been modifiable. Even Notch himself doesn’t really like mods because;
1. They break. Apparently he doesn’t like pissing people off when his updates break mods. Good to see he has some caring.
2. Having to modify critical source files to get these mods to work.

ModLoader is starting to gain popularity as an alternative way to add mods (yet also needs to be installed in minecraft.jar), but it seems to only be for mods that you can craft stuff, such as this Recall mod that you can make scrolls to teleport from Point A to Point B. Quite ingenious.

Ever since Minimap I’ve been leary with anything that doesn’t officially patch my game. Even with a map backup tool I don’t really feel safe with one.
