Why the Borderlands series needs Steam Workshop support

I’ve always said about how MMOs are better than Freeplay Single Player games, yet always played them solo. Well, the Borderlands series is a (technically) Single Player RPG/FPS. Though the game does encourage co-op, it can still be played with one player.
But there’s one thing that kept me just not interested anymore. And that’s the fact, the series has no Steam Workshop support. Aka, no custom maps.

Now, I’m using Far Cry 4 as an example(the only example that I can think of). It has custom maps that you can play by yourself or your co-op buddy. Why can’t the Borderlands series have this?
Instead, all they do is rake in more money of DLCs. Yet the funny thing is, I believe they stopped making new DLCs (to possibly work on Borderlands 3). So, where’s my content? Where’s the newness?
Yes, playing the game again! So much FUN! … No. It’s fun if played with others

Just saying, devs.. custom maps would personally keep my interest with your game. And I won’t be looking like an idiot trying to play an MMORPG as a Single Player game.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – Billions of guns on the moon

So I got this game about a week ago. It’s one of the three games that went on sale. It took ’till now to finally begin playing it.

So…have you ever wondered what was happening behind the scenes between Borderlands 1 and 2, and what made Jack a total douche to you, that you wanted to kick his head all the way to the moon base? Well, we would have to go in the past to this time (aka a Pre-Sequel). Where the Helios base is under attack by a group of enemies, known as the “Lost Legion”, and Jack is not in power, nor is he a douche.

And I’m getting ahead of myself. The story starts at the floating city at the end of Borderlands 2 (and the ending of the final EP of the game). Jack is dead, the loss have been mourned. But we still want Hyperion to pay. I mean, screw having dibs on those vaults, Brick. This is more important.

Athena has been captured by three of the new Vault Hunters. You probably remember her back in Borderlands 1, who assisted you to eventually bring down General Knox.
Now, she’s seen as a Hyperion supporter and faced with death of her treachery, unless she can answer one question truthfully. “Why?” As in, why the betrayal? You used to be good, Athena!
Even in ‘Tales of the Borderlands’, she hated Hyperion. This doesn’t make sense.

She answers the question word for word, and you’re brought into her story. A story that happened after the defeat of General Knox. She used to work for the Lance, the group that oppressed the area. And you had to go in and kick their asses.
After the defeat, she became a mercenary. That was until one day, she got a call from a low ranking Hyperion(aka Jack) that the under construction Helios One moon base needs help with an unknown assailant. She doesn’t support Hyperion, but she couldn’t turn down the reward. She then hired a group of three mercs to come with her, and head to the moon base.

They are Wilhelm(the Enforcer), Athena(the Gladiator), Nisha(the Lawbringer)…
and then… then there’s Claptrap(the Mistake). Yes, you can play as the lovable, yet very annoying robot. And I love how the game questions your sanity three times after picking him to be your player character.

So anyway, as I said earlier, Helios is under attack by the Lost Legion. It’s up to you to get to Jack and rescue him. Remember, this is before he turned into a bird-killing douchebag, and actually had a boss. He was somewhat nicer back then, and cared about people. He was also more jittery.

Once finally reaching Jack, you have to rescue him from a large wave of Lost Legion fighters. And without a shield, you got to really know how to use cover. I even died once when they had me pinned against a wall.
After rescuing Jack, he gives you a shield and explains it in the best way possible. That when it depletes, get to cover.
He then tries to activate the security systems of the station, only for them to be jammed by an unknown signal. There’s no other option but to abandon the moon base. Later, Jack discovers it’s coming from the moon, Elpis. You eventually meet the leader of the Lost Legion, a bitch named ‘Zarpedon’. She has no desire to kill you; all she wants is Jack.

She destroys the only sensible way to escape the base, which are ships. Jack knows the only way to escape is to use the Moonshot. You know, that big blue thing in the middle of the H? Yep.
So after some big battles (and even a boss battle), you get loaded up. Jack originally wanted to go with you, but was forced to stay behind due to systems continuing to fail on the base.
Now on Elpis, you get help from an interesting woman named “Janey Springs” who gets you started on the right foot, and a way to get to the largest city on the moon; ‘Concordia’. There, you will hopefully find the source of the signal (or at least someone that can help track it), and then finally destroy it.

.
And now I feel I should get to my review of what I’ve seen so far;

Good:
-Laser Weapons, yo! We’re talking Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon quality(without the Blood Dragons). They are better than EXPLOSIONS!!! Just.. don’t let Torque hear that. He doesn’t like laser rifles.. as they don’t CAUSE EXPLOSIONS!!! Fucking Micheal Bay here, folks.
-The game also has two new weapon types. A new Cryo elemental weapon type that freezes enemies solid, and a grenade that makes sure the enemy is thoroughly dead before exploding.
-0g gravity is sort of realistic. As in, Sounds play when they shouldn’t in a vacuum(but not many games actually “get it”). But what’s lovely is the way when you cause someone to bleed, it gushes out of them in blobs. Also, when opening a container in a vacuum, the lid flies off due to the rapid change in air pressure, and the items inside go flying out.
-Instead of seeing when you have the game paused about “Handsome Jack isn’t going to defeat himself”, it’s replaced with “These bad guys aren’t going to butt-slam themselves”. I just found it funny.
-0g is fun, and so is butt-slamming on the ground. It’s another way to kill weakened enemies.
-Claptrap’s interesting skills. For example, two of the ‘Subroutines’. One, is it will randomly pick a gun. Whatever gun is picked, you’ll do more damage with it(for like 5 minutes). Yet all other guns (eg: using a Pistol when Shotguns are active) do less damage. It’s quite wacky in that regard.
-Claptrap’s action skill, VaultHunter.EXE (depending on several combat factors that would take too long to mention) can be either life-saving or down right unhelpful. It’s all random. There’s one where you gain the Gunzerker’s trait from Borderlands 2. Except.. no infinite ammo.
-Claptrap doesn’t consume oxygen, being a robot. It gives me one less thing to worry about when on Elpis.
-Attacking an enemy has a chance to suffocate him by popping their oxygen bubble. It’s a good way to kill a weakened, ranged enemy.
-No Point of No Return main mission. Really do love this decision not to put a “You must do all of your side quests before this mission, as you will not be able to do them afterward” thing.

Bad:
-Fast travel points are very scarce compared to the other games.
-The Oxygen-powered jetpack, the oxygen depletes way too quickly(for air-breathing humans). Fortunately, being Claptrap, you hardly use any.
-The game world seems a lot smaller than the other games. Of course, this doesn’t even require you to own Borderlands 1 or 2. It’s its own game.

Neutral:
-The Black Market exists from Borderlands 2 (and even the same guy runs it), yet the only change is Eridian is replaced with Moonstone. Feels like lazy… something.
-Having a Borderlands 2-themed GUI and HUD. Was hoping they’ll go with something different, instead of rehashing their current content.
-Shields that regen health seem to not exist or are very rare, compared to the other two games.
-The Golden Key chest from Borderlands 2(the one that has a chance to give you rare weapons and items) has been brought back. I got three free keys (according to what I see), yet ingame, I have 0?
-It seems 2K hired a bunch of British voice actors for the game. Because nearly everyone on Elpis speak British(even enemies). And we’re talking the stereotypical kind of British(crumpets, jolly-ho, flushed down the loo, etc). I personally don’t really like it.

Possible Bugs that need to be addressed;
-Being in a buggy for a good long while, then getting out and being spammed with Subroutines showing up on your HUD. Obvious bug. But maybe this is another Claptrap ‘feature’. The game did warn you.
-1/2 of dialog directed to you (and if you play by yourself), I keep hearing “Get those Vault Hunters!”, and other things like it to “simulate” you playing with real people, which is not possible in Single Player.

OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood – Tony Hawk meets 24 bit game

Finally, the third game you get for free instead of actually paying for. I saved this as something I was pretty sure I wouldn’t like, and I was right.
Though in ways, compared to how depressing(both good and bad) the last game I just played(Valiant Hearts: The Great War), I was actually hoping this one would be better. Right? .. Wrong. I guess I’m just not into these Tony Hawk-style games that involve you doing tricks on a skateboard to get points.

This is a 24-bit like game. 2D platformer. The game teaches you how to do pretty much everything you need to know. The only thing it doesn’t teach you is how hard to hit your controller’s keys to get good at nailing a ‘PERFECT’ everytime. The “Landing” training is where I just keep fucking up. Or maybe I’m not, and the tutorial demands perfection.
I think it’s the latter. Basically, this requires you to do jumps (and not flop the landing). Several times I tried to do a jump, then tapping my X key to make sure I hit the floor(while mashing the rest of my keys to do the trick) and I keep getting ‘SLOPPY’. Not even ‘GOOD’ or ‘NICE’ ones are being registered. Anything that isn’t ‘PERFECT’ isn’t counted as part of the five trick quota.
Plus on top of that, I got a minute of rolling space to do these jumps. Just…fuck that.

Not saying the game sucks. If you’re into these kind of games, more power to you. I’m just not.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War – It really never changes

I was expecting an uplifting CoD-style game of teabagging enemies and using racist slurs to further make the Internet an unwelcomed place.
Instead, I find myself re-enacting a part of one of Europe’s worst eras in history. The Great War of the early 20th century (that the US never really played a part of). This great war happened between 1914 and 1918 (before World War 1).

This game re-enacts the great war between France and Germany(and we all know Germany are the ‘bad guys’). You play as Emile, who his oldest son has been deported. A week later, you get a draft to get yourself into the French Army.
As soon as you complete your basic training, you’re off to war. Eventually, you will get help via an awesome dog, a combat nurse, and an American who’s willing to help the French win the war.

My favorite parts of the game so far, are when

Spoiler

the dog is saved by the American. I actually welled up in tears of joy

[collapse]
, and
Spoiler

the scene of having the music hilariously synced to getting bombed when doing one of those “dodge these” types of minigames. Whenever a beat happens, a bomb fell. The more beats, the more bombs.

[collapse]

So if you like games that re-enact wars (in a side scroller world), this game is for you. If not, then.. there are other games.
This will really pull your heart strings at times, of what these brave men who go beyond the call of duty have gone through. And would even give respect for the ones fighting for our freedom.

Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty – Follow Me! (to your death)

One of the three free games for having a PS Plus account. This is a semi-3D kind of a puzzle game.
You play as Abe, a typical citizen who used to work at a meat processing factory, called ‘RuptureFarms’. The biggest meat factory in all of Oddworld. The company has been making some good things, until he noticed a billboard called “new and tasty”. He also saw what his boss has been up to, and the big wigs during one of their board meetings. They’ve harvested so much meat, their profit is dropping. And so their ‘new and tasty’ plan to boost declining sales, is to make meat out of his species!
He attempts to escape, yet everyone is after him to silence him (or just bring him in. Whichever works to not alert his fellow workers of the evil plot). The thing is, his fellow workers are too dim-witted for Abe to warn them.
His only allies are his people, who he can either murder(either by accident on on purpose) or save.

To save your people, the area must be clear of enemies. And you must also find a circular thing made of birds. Holding down both L2 and R2 causes a portal to popup. The workers that are currently following you will automatically run through the portal and count as an escaped worker.
In some areas of levels, you’ll see a big board showing your current status. How many more workers to be saved, how many have been killed(by you or by other means), and how many have escaped so far.

The controls take a while to master. Your left control pad are your ‘gamespeak’ commands, that you can tell your fellow workers to follow you, or wait in a specific area.
You have alternate Gamespeak controls by holding down R1 and hitting the same buttons. These can be used to lure the slug creatures who are working for the evil guys, into a trap (or to get them away from you, or one of your allies). You can also throw unlimited rocks to lure them.

The game actually has a Quicksave/Quickload feature; a first that I’ve seen of any console game. It’s the big button above your hat switches (L3 and R3). Pressing it does a Quicksave, holding it down does a Quickload. And it actually saves your exact progress, and doesn’t matter if you’re near a waypoint.
If only Little Big Planet 3 had this… I’d scream a lot less when I’m forced to redo the level all over again.

$10/month for Playstation Plus, reasonable? Yes. Yes it is

I seem to be going against my ‘morals’. My “Why pay for something that I’m hardly going to use” morals.
But Sony actually has some good, free games available. Even one that Dan likes a lot. And this gives me a reason to boot my PS4 again after not playing it for months after completing GTA V (and disgusted I couldn’t do a particular thing right).

That thing (and seeing Loadout for PC as I was looking for games I’ve never tried before, that Dan never reviewed) is what actually made me reconsider to officially get into PS Plus. It made me think “why don’t I just give this another go? Except use the sub this time.”

So anyway, I just got done getting a lengthy, yet long overdue (Sony saying this to me about leaving my PS4 off for months) software update, and getting updates for Little Big Planet 3, Loadout, and (still downloading) GTA V. Probably to get that new Heists update for GTA Online, that I keep hearing about on Youtube.
I also have the following games I got from the PS Store (for getting PS Plus);
Viliant Hearts: The Great War, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, and OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood

Of course I’ll be doing reviews on these three games, once the GTA V update is completed.

How Guild Wars 2 ‘compares’ to the Iron Horde of WoD

“Oh no, not another comparison!” You must be thinking that. Techinically, it is, but it’s also more of a discussion between the two. Mainly of battling the bosses.

Currently in Guild Wars 2, you can eventually take the fight to Zhaitan (following your Personal Story). In the Heart of Thorns EP, you’ll be (assuming) able to take the fight to Mordremoth.
In WoD, we’ve already killed most of the Iron Horde except for a few.

Notice a difference here? Yep… this is where WoD is currently failing. But, don’t worry, this isn’t another “WoD sucks and here’s why” post. So, yeah. We killed most of the Iron Horde. Yet in Guild Wars 2, we were only able to kill one of the Elder Dragons.

The trend seems to be that Guild Wars 2 is getting it right, by making us wait for the next expansion to kill the next Elder Dragon. Yet you also got to think how WoW does it. For example; in WoTLK, Cata, and MoP. You didn’t kill the ‘final boss’ until a few patches later.

So there you go. I was going to add about the differences in fighting the final boss, but that would take me off topic.
My point, is that Guild Wars 2 (though it’s its own game compared to WoD, which is an expansion for WoW), the time to battle the final boss is prolonged; gated behind expansions. They’re like patches in WoW, except they take a few years until they’re released instead of a few months.
This (somehow) makes the game better.

Though I personally feel, that Guild Wars 2 is like another “freeplay after the main questline” single player game, and now I feel I have nothing to do. All I’m doing is just waiting for the expansion.

Why I’m hesitant from buying Heart of Thorns

I saw an interview that Angry Joe did with the main dev of Guild Wars 2, about the new expansion coming. They went over several things. Most are cool, others are “meh”.
But what stopped me (and of course sent me into ‘depression mode’, is what was mentioned that they really want to “add challenging PvE content in this expansion”.
That’s fine, but the fact you’re Level 80, doesn’t this mean ALL content will be challenging?

Joe’s asking what kind of ‘challenging content’ will be added, and happy as he can be. “I WANT to be challenged! I WANT to rage infront of my computer!! IT FEELS GOOD!!” *rolls eyes*
Colin Johanson, said head of Guild Wars 2, mentioned how a lot of players asked for this, and how “this expansion will be more challenging”.. which really worries me as a soloer. He mentions how they looked at all the options (Raids/Open World Raiding/Instances/5 man dungeons.. stuff that Joe is just SO PUMPED FOR!!.. I could care less).
He won’t explain exactly what will be added, which adds to more uncertainty. All he said is that they’ll give the players what they want and make them really use their hot bars. Yay… even more complicatedness!

So… I dunno. I asked Dragon Season, and they too believe that even soloing is going to be challenging. But will challenging = impossible without requiring random people to help me and I’ll feel pathetic and weak, ergo will NOT be soloable? DS told me the devs haven’t really explained yet(just as the interview said). So your guess is as good as mine.

Besides the challenges to soloing, this is pretty much what I’ve gotten from watching that interview;
-They want to challenge BlizzCon and other MMO Conventions, that they can throw even more content in an expansion. And not do mundane tasks (like in WoD).
-A Jungle setting.
-A new Elder Dragon to kill (Mordremoth, a Malygos-like dragon that feeds on energy), which they mention could be a more epic(and challenging) final boss battle.
-Should’ve been released two years ago, apparently. I wouldn’t know.
-Level cap will not be raised. The expansion will pretty much be endgame content for Level 80’s.
-A major update to the ‘mastery’ system(mastering your character), that you will get points as you ‘level’. These points will be used as currency, such as being able to communicate with certain races (and trading with them), mastery of being able to use mushrooms, and being able to kill an enemy you couldn’t before. (Quite interesting)
-Learning the lore of NPC races is important, to have any hope of defeating Mordremoth. (Interesting)
-Brand new Level 80 Personal Story for your char (the continuation of the last one).
-No new races.
-Adding the ‘Reverent’ class.
-Semi-Specs, that you can be another spec (a Ranger can also be a Druid. That’s fucked up, yo).
-Still no monthly fees. 🙂
-New skins.
-New gear types.
-Rangers can use Staffs.
-Changes to current classes and specs.
-A new World VS World Borderlands. (Don’t care)
-Guild Halls similar to Garrisons in WoD. (Hmmm… at least I won’t be a part of that)
-Actually doing Guild Wars in GW2 (Guild PvP). (Don’t care)
-More incentives to join a Guild (instead of just asking for help). (Don’t care)

A serious review, about game reviews

I just got done watching a video from the popular and funny The Angry Joe Show. This video isn’t funny at all. It’s about Nintendo screwing him over, throwing a copywrite claim on his ENTIRE video. Not just a specific song, but the entire. video.

This actually worries me, as a gamer and a reviewer who blogs about games. I do this in my own time, and really whenever I feel like it. Typically, I’m just talking to myself because hardly anyone looks at these blogs, except a few people from the MRT Server (and of course angry).

But what worries me, is if Nintendo can get away with saying “You’re making a video of our characters! That’s illegal!!” What if it was illegal to do reviews in general? What if they actually found this website, and started sending me emails of what I can and cannot say in my blog posts?
Though, I don’t think they’ll be actively looking for review sites that are ‘off the radar’ sort of speak. In other words, I feel “protected” that I can ramble on how much I don’t like a particular game or games, and not feel like I have to censor my content due to a game company not happy with my review (as it goes over mostly the bad parts. As the game may not be good at all.)

No. This issue is mainly situated against Youtubers. Famous Youtubers(like Dan, and Angry Joe). Why? YouTube is where most people go for game reviews. Not blog posts. What I do is pretty much the “analog” way of doing reviews.

Plus, typing in a review is so much easier than needing recording software, a good rendering computer, knowledge on editing footage and sound to make it 1080p(and have 30-60 FPS), and then having the balls to post videos and listen to feedback(trollish or not).
Which is why I’m never ever going to do that. I had constantly thought of having a “Benie Fails At…” series(as a kind of a spinoff of a Lets Play). But the effort.. well, you know me.

The Talos Principle – Now with 5x more Nose Bleeds!

Picture yourself being born, yet having no prior knowledge of your existence (or your childhood). You were just… created. Just like that. The snap of a finger. Like a character in an MMORPG. Except, this is the dark, depressing side of life that humanity has been accustomed to. We’ve always questioned… why were we born? What is our purpose in life?

The Talos Principle – it plays on this, then throws your brain into a vice and fucks with it. It goes over things such as, “what is consciousness? Can you feel it? Does it have weight? What makes you human?”, and I’m all “holy fuck!!” This shit is deep. And indeed it is. It’s very heavy drenched in philosophical metaphors. Think of it like the mindfuck ending of BioShock Infinite (and the ‘question of free will’ in The Stanley Parable), and magnify that… five. freakin’. times. That’s The Talos Principle. With even more nose bleeds!

So, what is it? You’re re-born as an android. I personally would be trying to scream “WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ME?!” Yet I would have no prior knowledge of my past, shitty life. It’s like I’ve been reincarnated (born again as something or someone else).
You see a weird purple door infront of you in the distance. Suddenly, a booming voice from the sky begins to speak. He claims he created you, and that you can be blessed if you complete several tasks (and enter his temple). And that you will receive eternal life.
Eternal life is one thing that most people (including myself) would really like to have. No fear of dying; of pain, sadness, depression, and all those other negative emotions. All you have to do is follow your god, who’s named Elohim(which means “god” in Hebrew). Yet.. is it right? Can Elohim be trusted?

So how do you fulfill your strange, questionable destiny to receive enlightenment and eventually live an eternal life? You got to solve puzzles. This is where the questionable and strange parts come in(that I just mentioned).
You’re asked by your god, to collect ‘sigils’ at the end of puzzles. They are Tetris-like puzzle pieces. You use these to unlock specific things. Each thing has a number of sigils you must collect.
Once you have all of the required ones, you go to were the thing is and activate a console. Here, you must place the sigils you found in a jigsaw puzzle layout.
To reach the puzzles (after doing the first three and getting to the temple), you’ll notice there’s 9 doorways with a portal inside. Each one is a Portal Hub. Each portal hub shows what blocks are available to secure via their puzzle.
There’s more than one temple. You’ll be in temple A. To access B and C, you must unlock the door to reach the elevator. There, it will take you to the main hub of all three temples. Each temple has a theme. A is ruins, B is Egypt, and C is in France.

Of the three temples, you may notice a really tall tower directly across from A. This tower, your god warns you not to go up to the top. “For you will die and ‘doom your generation'”. And that’s not what your god wants from you. He wants what’s best.
Yet, are you going to listen to some disembodied voice tell you what to do, or are you going to actually have free will and defy your god?
To achieve free will and fuck your god over, you must collect Red-colored Tetris blocks. I think you must get up to 50 of them to have access.

Also, in every puzzle hub, you’ll encounter a random computer terminal. Active ones draw your attention with a blinking eye looking at you, and having an audio tone of when the eye blinks.
Accessing the terminal, it starts off as simple MS DOS-like commands. You can also look through people’s emails for some creepy, odd reason. Going over them, it appears the human race is long gone. What happened, is still unsure to say. But it seems to affected the Internet greatly.

Anyway, there’s a way to get Admin access in these consoles. But you got to go through something that would make CAPTCHA seem obsolete. Eventually, this.. program, or person begins to talk to you through these terminals. THIS is where the mind fucking happens.
It begins to question your existence, if you’re actually a human infront of your computer, or an android.

And now…*leans back in his chair with an ice pack on his head from thinking too hard*…now… it’s questioning my flawed logic of how the world should work. If there should be equality, or people should be happy. It actually asked me before, how I would change the world.
Now as I said, it’s questioning (after I said how children or the severely disabled have the potential to contribute to society), which… actually strikes a chord with my own life. How at times I’m letting my own mental disability, control my life. Instead of doing something with my life.

Yet then it says “If someone with a severe, incurable brain injury can be classed as contributing, mustn’t we also include the cats that keep the rats at bay, or the buildings that keep us warm?”
And that’s when my brain exploded. I have no fucking clue how to respond! This game… this game throws things at me that I just don’t want to deal with. And at times, the game makes me just want to laugh at it. Like when it called me a hippie, and then said “You set the barrier to entry stupidity low.”.. now that’s harsh, but unfortunately true.
“If even the rats are getting rights now, you must have a spot on your own table left for me, right?”
