Another ‘buyer’s remorse’, but with the Steam Deck. Except my feelings are mixed.

Ah, the eve of New Years. A time for everyone to look back at what they’ve done this year and what they plan to do in the new one.
But me? I want to punch someone. Anyone. Even myself to take out the aggression I feel against this $600 Steam Deck I got, that I thought would solve so many of our issues. But the proof is right there in black and Linus. And it’s not anyone’s fault but my own, that I didn’t do the damn research before I bought it.

I’m pissed at myself, knowing the ONLY FUCKING WAY I’ll be able to watch videos in LS Media is through the ‘forced’ ways of either sitting infront of a monitor, or wear a heat-
treated plastic brick (aka VR headset) over my face. One of the main reasons I wanted the deck, was so I wouldn’t have to do this! And it pisses me off THIS ONE FUCKING
WORLD won’t let me do what the fuck I want!! And noone has an answer as to why the videos fail to load. THAT is what infuriates me, because noone has a Steam Deck. So noone can help me.
Thing is, if the videos worked anything like the ‘Yet Another Movie Theater’ world (which for some reason the videos do work with the deck), the audio would be so out of sync with the video as my wifi has a much higher ping compared to my main connection.

“What do you mean, you’re stuck?! I thought you were going to dual boot your deck which would solve your issue!” you’re likely asking me, except this has been shut down by one. single. video.

“But their thumbnail shows Windows 11, not 10. Of course it’s going to run like shit. 10’s much better.” That’s what I thought too, but the video clearly goes over 10 (due to the taskbar being on the left).
While the framerate isn’t what would bother me (as LS Media isn’t that demanding of a world).. the almost constant loss of control definitely world.
Though the video is 9 months old. Surely they’ve fixed a lot of issues since then, right? No. Infact I got ‘a sample’ of these issues when I very recently discovered the deck’s built
in Desktop Mode. And my gosh does it suck. Discovered I could play VRChat through
it (which made me hope I could actually watch the damn movies through it), but I couldn’t move. All I could do was turn, and jump. Couldn’t even pull up the menu.
My guess is the fact the game is already fully compatible with the deck, the controls aren’t available outside of its ‘Gaming Mode’.
And also my hope was pretty much flawed yet again, as the deck is still using Linux even
through Desktop Mode.

Yet on the other hand, I also question myself of why am I so damn obsessed over getting one world to fully work that I’m willing to risk turning a $600 device into a fancy paperweight… if something goes wrong (and doing a factory reset won’t de-brick it).
The Desktop Mode alone, if set up correctly, I believe can be used to help my mother out anyway with her bills and whatever else she needs, because it has a version of Firefox.
So I don’t really need to do this.
I just.. ugh. It doesn’t feel fair. I wish there was another alternative that I can still watch these movies but without the whole dual booting thing, because I love the deck as it is. The fact it can act like a portable PC at half the cost, and at 60FPS.
…It just sucks the fact Valve had to use Linux. But I do understand why as it’s good for the hardware inside. Plus games on Linux just run faster. It’s a shame whatever server or servers LS Media is using, doesn’t work correctly in Linux. ..And it’s something I’m just going to have to deal with. 😞
It’s dumb to go through all of that hell.. just to make one single world work right. And I was really better off just getting a laptop. Then again, finding a good gaming laptop for the same price of the $300 Steam Deck is next to impossible.
