Best Boi Studios Meeting: New areas, and even more drama

Greetings, readers. Have I a lot to tell you (as I type this while sitting in a beach chair, on my ‘laptop’, in the ‘Hotel on the beach’ world, to help clear my thoughts(while listening to the fake sounds of the ocean)).
Yesterday, I was able to finally attend my first Best Boi meeting. I now know how they do it. You got to be friends with someone in the private world, to join (and I was able to join Creepery102).
A half an hour before the meeting, we were either sitting down or standing up. Someone eventually got up long enough that I was able to steal their seat. You snooze, you lose pal. 🙂
8pm finally came, and Kibble hushed the crowd to announce (since the rest of the moderators weren’t there (apart from Dragon Nuggets)), that he would try to attend all future meetings. Six announcements were also said;
1. Allying with the ‘loli’ faction, since the Ugandan Knuckles “are an endangered species”.
2. Moral in the Discord server (and the server) is low, and he proposes doing new games after the meeting.
3. New additions to the Best Boi Studios server…
3a. (Now Active) The ‘Snowboi’ area, now has its own area (and the grasslands have been reverted back to grass). In addition, he turned down the ‘snow blindness’ of the snow area, where Desktop users can now see their menus.
3b. (Now Active) A new ‘Best Bunny’ world (made by someone). People can also make requests for their own Best Bunnies.
3c. An upcoming “Pirate Boi” version of the Best Boi.
4. Introducing a new species to the Best Boi’s (aka himself working on a new model). He said he was going to show concept art in the Discord server, but never did.
5. Due to new species (outside of Kibble’s rule) joining the Best Boi’s, there will be a future ‘Furry Lounge’ to hang out.
6. Similar to WoW’s seasonable events, the server would also have these timed events. Such as when Easter swings around, he proposes having eggs you can gather (and mentions only one of these might open a portal to a special Best Bunny avatar).

Then it was question time. My question (that I never got to ask (but someone did it for me)), of what is the ETA of the ‘Small Boi’. Kibble says, possibly sometime after Easter. And as for where they’ll be, he originally proposed having a portal inside Trigger’s Den, but decided to have them in the same world with the Best Bunnies.

And with that, the meeting was over. I expected Kibble to say “this meeting is adjourned”. But it was just people getting up and leaving. Then Kibble showed us the additions he worked on. I already know of the Best Bunny burrow (was able to get a sneak peek with a few others a day ago(it also has a Local only mirror)), but I was able to see the new location of the Snow Boi (and the upcoming location of the ‘Pirate Boi’). This area is highly a WIP. He said it’s supposed to have water, but hasn’t gotten to it yet. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Then we went to this new world; a version of the X-Games (called ‘Boi Got Talent’). This is when the drama started, with TwitchinGoodTV acting like a moderator(when she’s just a streamer), saying kicks will be given to anyone that cusses and stuff to the contestants (just because she’s streaming).
Wow. Okay. That’s not messed up at all. Especially when you cuss like a sailor (and also drunk an entire bottle of whisky.. while streaming). I think you have anger issues.
But anyway, this ‘talent show’ was actually pretty good. It was mostly of people singing, and being judged afterwards. There were flops, voice cracks, and having the song drown on for too long. And then, there was an angel who sang. And DAMN, is his voice good. He easily wow’d the judges (and the audience).

Then came the time where Kibble was getting tired, and we were free to do our own thing. I went back to BBS, and saw Creepery there. Out of curiosity, I asked why he wasn’t at the talent show (as he has showed, that he loves being part of the community). He said something about that he was ashamed, then said he needed to “go somewhere”.
I managed to track him down to a semi-private instance of ‘Gaia Night’, and immediately walked into a conversation of him and a furry(named ‘Jrock’), talking about Creepery wanting to be a moderator of BBS. Something about how “Kibble doesn’t give a fuck about you, and neither do the other moderators”.
He had to leave to do something, and I was alone with Jrock. We talked for a good 10 minutes about the situation. I really felt sorry for Creepery, giving his all to be friendly to everyone (and this is the thanks he gets).
The conversation changed to how he believes the Best Boi server is ‘dying’, due to how much toxicity is going on (and Kibble’s doing nothing about it). He adds (of what he feels), that the reason why the server still lives, is due to Twitchin and her followers. I don’t remember the entire conversation, but it was something about that she can get her followers to do “whatever she wants”; such as being toxic on the server. And Kibble does nothing.
And (my assumed) reasoning, is because she has publicly admitted during the meeting, of pooling all of her resources to buy him a plane ticket, and come to the US, to attend ‘TwitchCon’ with her (and a few others) in October of this year.
If this means he will do nothing to punish people who break the rules (aka respecting eachother, which continues to be broken with the furry hate and racist comments), just so he can attend TwitchCon.. yeah, I can see why Jrock feels that the server is going downhill. But again, this is just an assumption. Take my words with a grain of salt.

But this thing with Creepery, explains why he said he was planning to leave in the Discord server (but we stopped him from making a bad mistake, with lots of love and hugs). He needs a lot more than that.
Jrock talks more about the toxicity, talking about people who abuse the Kick system (instead of just blocking or muting). I definitely have seen this, given requests to kick someone that I’ve never met (and have never offended me). I personally have only used the kick system, once (and that was someone on another server, having an avatar that was lagging the entire server). That kind of shit, deserves a kick. But not for someone who calls me a retard for no reason. That’s why the Block option is there, to remove such annoyances from my life.
One such annoyance are people who play loud, obnoxious music. And he mentions Darian.. the one that (indirectly) got me into VRChat. Saying some of his music, you can hear halfway across the server. I said how I’ve seen Darian and heard his music (and never had a problem with it). But he claims there’s been instances where he has to leave the server, just to talk with his friends (due to how loud it is).
I do know that Darian, has a pretty strict friends list (with a ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude attached to it). I’ve never directly talked to him, fearing what he would say to my voice. It’s that kind of attitude that’s kind of ruining the community (to me). And why Jrock feels the server is ‘dying’.

But, I dunno. He also adds that he can’t tell Kibble how he personally feels (and neither can anyone). I really don’t want the server to die. But if it does, it does. Hopefully, Creepery can take over (as he told me that he would like to, when he first talked to me). But with Kibble constantly refusing to acknowledge the helpfulness that Creepery is doing (welcoming people into the server, giving them tours (and overall being an awesome fellow to talk to)… I just don’t know.
I don’t understand why he’s gone blind to this.. except from what I assumed. Yet even my own words (when it comes to Twitchin), feel that they can’t be true.

…On TOP of this, he’s telling me how the model of the Best Boi’s was actually created by someone else (and he doesn’t believe Kibble got the rights to do it). Jrock says that the Best Boi model, is based off of the ‘Dutch Angel Dragon‘ (I’ve never heard of these ‘creatures'(aka people in fur suits), but I can definitely see a resemblance), and says it had to be renamed to ‘Dutch Angel Fox’ due to copyright issues.
He said that if the original owner (going by the alias of ‘Telephone’), could sue Kibble if they copyrighted the thing. That’s something.

And that, is all the news I can give you. I have my own drama, but it’s nothing compared to this.

Personal VRChat Highlights (New avatars, friendships, and #Furrydrama)

I really need to find a way to curb this feeling I feel, when it comes to playing one game until I get bored with it (and then expecting it not to, by not being interested in anything else).
But that’s what happens when you only have friends in one game (and not in multiple games). But even a game like Starbound (where I have a friend in), I turned his invite down due to feeling like the game is nothing but a grind (compared to VRChat)).
I just don’t know what it is, but I need to do something about it. I don’t want to lose friendships over this.

So what’s been going on in VRChat (for me)? Well, I now have a new Penguin avatar (which helps me see the world from a whole new perspective). And this avatar has also brought on a.. well, I can’t say it was because of me or because the model is now so easily available, but there’s now a ‘Penguin Mafia’ group starting up. I got asked to join, I said yes, and I’m going to be getting a new skin for this model… but there’s a catch, that I have to attend a special meeting. I’m unsure if this ‘meeting’ is even worth it. I think I rather just do without clothes, if I have to go through hell to get a custom skin.
Speaking of avatars, I feel I’m finally done with the ‘obsession’ of the “I want a dragon avatar!” thing. In the past on VRCmods.com, my choices were extremely limited. But now, there are several — (by the same guy, ‘LightRuler’) — including a full scale model of Deathwing and Alduin. Yet these models really mean nothing to me, as none of them are really speaking to me (to the point I’m thinking of removing a few unused models).
On top of that, the dragon model I mentioned in my latest VRChat blog post, I tried my hand on animating the wings. The end result, ended in frustration and a burn to the microscopic spark that resembles what’s left of my self-esteem. Having to move every single wing bone, one at a time (with how little knowledge I have)… you really need to be patient at it. Plus, I think to properly animate the flapping, every scene has to be recorded (which is even more of a headache).

No, fuck that. Fuck the whole dragon avatar crap. I just wanna be.. me, in this game. And I mean something that looks like me (yet isn’t a fucking weaboo). And I nearly had the option to do it (via a program on Mixamo’s website, called ‘Fuse‘). On its website, there’s a kicker: it’s “free”, but only through having an account with this ‘Creative Cloud’ thing… which costs $50 (a MONTH). Wow. Why in the fuck should I have to pay $50/mo, just to see if it’ll work for me?!
There’s also another version on Steam that is listed as a completely free download, but the reviews of it.. are beyond not promising. I’m unable to tell if these are reviews of the actual program, or if this is the purposely outdated version (to force people to pay this stupid $50/mo). I tried to access their discussion forum (through the Steam app), but the Store page is being an ass and not loading properly.
I’ll have to check later on this.

Moving on, I’ve also been making some new friends (and then unfriending most of them, as I forgot why they friended me in the first place(as we never talk or do anything friend-related)). But one has been hanging out with me, as an actual friend. Though, he’s also friends with a 12 year old, and someone who loves to call people assholes (for jokes) and yell when pissed.
One of those times, is playing this 8-bit-like version of Dungeons and Dragons in one world. Except, there were no complicated as ‘trying to understand Blender’s UI’ rules that we had to adhere by, or any dice we had to roll.
Instead, we were these RGB cube avatars, only one of the weapons was able to be picked up, and we had to go through multiple easy to get lost mazes (with these annoying doors that you don’t know if you’re coming or going). This place was really fucking with our minds (without lube).
There was this one time, where most of us get separated while trying to find the next key. I’m with the guy, who’s about to lose his shit due to how long we’ve been playing (and getting horribly lost), while my right index finger is crying for mercy due to having to hold down my left mouse button (as I have the weapon).
Finally I had enough of this shit, and we headed back. That world definitely needs to be worked on. The bounding boxes of the weapons and shit are horrible on Desktop. Plus, it should give you the option to place the object in the air (so you won’t have to carry the damn thing everywhere).

We also did something that I didn’t know was possible in this game… playing Halo (in the ‘Blood Gulch’ map). Starting off as the loud guy was telling me all about Master Chief and how cool he was (to him). Suddenly, my main friend shows up and snipes him (and me) without warning. I manage to find one of the sniper rifles he used, and it was go time. The only complaint I have, is how wiggly the gun is (kind of hard to line up a shot with the scope while camping). And close quarters combat (if both are hopping like bunny rabbits), it takes awhile until someone dies.
Really had a lot of fun here. A lot more fun than that CTF-like world of Robbers -VS- Sheriffs (where I die more times than kill, due to (once again).. not being able to line up the red dot intime with the target). Ah, the joys of a clunky aiming system outside of VR.

Outside of friendships, there’s been some drama in (and outside of) Best Boi lands. Some of it was the ‘traditional’ furry gay shit in VR (surprised I didn’t cause even more drama by expressing my opinion), and then there was this one with one of the well-respected streamers on the Best Boi Discord server, drinking an entire bottle of whisky (while streaming live on Twitch, and collapsing shortly after). Thankfully, she’s OK after that ordeal.
Finally, there was an incident of someone posting NSFW in the Discord. I didn’t see this, only heard (and how he came close to a permanent ban). The aftermath wasn’t good of what I overheard from one world (but I won’t release what was said).

Speaking of the Best Boi server, last Friday I attempted to attend my first meeting. Originally, I heard it happens at 5pm EST (which forced me to eat earlier than I wanted to). Then I get told later on, it happens at 8pm EST… so I never had to eat at a time I didn’t want to afterall.
7:40pm hits, and I’m waiting in another instance (at the meeting room, assuming this is where it’ll happen). Someone sees me and comments how I’m quite early, and I say I’m “trying to impress the mods”. Later, he says they’re in a private instance (and we’re locked out). Something about that you have to be friends with one of the mods to get in. WTF?

I’m forced to watch the stream of the meeting (instead of attending it). It was quite short, and crazy. The owner of the world and creator of the Best Boi model (‘Thekibblemeister’, or ‘Kibble’ for short) couldn’t attend it, due to being busy with life (nor does he really need to).
Another reason for attending the meeting (besides having a voice in a good community), is listening for an ‘attendance phrase’ from one of the mods. Once it’s mentioned, you can go to a Google form and enter your VRChat Account name (and the attendance phrase after). If correct (and enough meetings have been attended by you), you’ll slowly rise up the ranks in the Discord server. Leading raids against the Ugandan Knuckles, used to be a requirement for the higher ranks. But since the raids are over (and the meme is dead), they’re no longer needed.

One of the changes mentioned in the meeting, is the grasslands has been changed to snow (and includes a new ‘Snowboi’ avatar). It’s pretty cute. It looks like a snowman, but having sticks resembling ears (and having a snout). Nice job, Kibble.
Future changes, involve this new bunny meme. It started a day ago (though I wasn’t on the server when it happened), with the creator of the model being praised (and people actually wanting him to make models for them). Then Kibble shows up, likes it and wants to make a small hole in the mountain, and make a new ‘Bunnyboi’ world for it.
The thing is, he has to make the world for Kibble to use. Seems he has a lot to handle.
And finally, there’s talks of a new ‘Smallboi’ area (with models like Triggerpull’s). I really hope this is confirmed, because it’s going to be so adorable. Everytime I see Trigger, it warms my heart. Especially when he has a new script that allows him to climb up things (including climbing in the air). He’s just so cute. 🙂

And that, I believe, should cover all the news I can bring you.

Latest Astroneer update, the wait continues

Editor’s Note: *After someone has shown me something that I was quite blinded to, I have completely rewrote this blog post*
Astroneer has been updated to 0.6.2.0 tonight, though sadly it hasn’t fixed the issue that people worry about– their rovers running out of power when in caves.
However, they have posted a workaround. This same workaround was seen from one of ‘Z1 Gaming”s latest Astroneer playthrough videos, ‘Broken Rovers?!‘)
If you have a power resource node (called a “power nugget” by the devs) attached somewhere on your rover, and your rover runs out of power, it will start to consume the nugget (as a backup power source). It does take away from having extra room on your rover, but it’s all we got (for now).
As for when the fix (should) happen, they say “we will address them in our next content update, coming in March.” Hopefully this is a promise. They also thank the people who have reported all the issues. Glad they’re thinking about us, and not saying “screw it, we’re not bothering to fix it” (as I originally thought, until I read they -will- fix it).

I was quite furious, when I shouldn’t have (if I had just read the entire thing). Especially when I felt I waited patiently for a week until they posted the update, and thinking “THIS is the way they treat us?!”.
But, it’s all good now. Sure, my reputation is more tarnished than the color of oil (of making a ranting post in the Astroneer Steam Discussion board), but people will (hopefully) forget.

“I’m now 100% done” … until I learned custom emotes

Fuck me, even when I swore up and down (and even made a thread on the VRChat Steam Discussion board saying I quit)… I’ve gone back to it.
And I think it’s “the Wurm effect”, saying I’m going to quit and all of that shit (and even when I said this game is nothing but a way to get people to get into VR), only to come back. And the reason was someone said “since you can’t do VR, why not make custom animations?”
I will …admit, this was another reason why I had “quit”. But since I did, I felt semi-ready to learn (feeling that this might be the only thing close enough to VR(without having a headset)). Looked it up on Youtube, and one was showing me how to do a ‘super simple’ animation, of the model spinning around with no regards for gravity.
However, this ‘super simple’ thing was anything but, as the person goes from “click the record button” to “*poof*, your model is in the rotation bubble” with something called ‘Rotation’ in the Animation window.
The content creator felt like they did cover it, and was confused of what I was talking about. But even when I explained the problem in the video, they never responded to me. And this made me quite depressed, and gave the video a downvote.

Even more so, when knowing my only option to get help was to get back into one of the two Discord channels I left. And after much debate with myself, I re-joined and again had to wait up to a day until one of the staff allows me to post. Thankfully, it was done in only five minutes. Unfortunately, the #animation channel was pretty.. well, ‘dead’.
One person responded, telling me to do the same thing I’m doing (watch a tutorial), and it wasn’t looking good. Eventually I went to the #avatars section, and said;
Me: I’ve quit VRChat because I cannot pat people on the head like VR people can.
Person: Create custom animations!
Me: *attempts to look up how to do it, only seeing complicated shit*

Someone by the name of ‘Lolita Reishi’ came to my rescue, saying they had a head pat emote I could have (and showed me it). I didn’t particularly like how high the head pat animation was (aka, wouldn’t be useful for patting the heads of smaller avatars).
But, I grabbed it anyway (as this is the closest thing I can get, outside of VR). Lolita also taught me how to apply it to the latest dragon model I downloaded, from VRCmods.com (had it before I had ‘quit’).
It took awhile (and I also had issues with the model not actually being uploaded when looking in Managed Uploaded Content… so it seems what I was told yesterday, about Pipeline Manager being attached fucking things up, is now affecting me. Detached it, and it showed up.

There was also the issue of.. reinstalling VRChat. Ohh how words have no weight with me. The issue is with the Steam client, ‘locking me out’ with an infinite loading loop. I had to use the Steam Community website (and log into my account through it), to get it. And even with that, it claimed I already had the game installed (which I clearly didn’t).
Clicking the Play button, finally triggered a popup to re-download it. Got it done, and got in. I expected to be asked to login to my account, but it was still auto-logging me in through my VRChat account. Saw the modified avatar, with a new ‘Pat Head’ emote. Did the emote, and it looks like my avatar is knocking on someone’s door instead of patting someone’s head (due to the claw fingers being inside the hand).
But hey, it WORKED! 😀
This opens up so much potential for me, such as importing animations from Mixamo into a model. And as for the new emote, I feel it’ll work better on a smaller model (like the Murloc, or the Minecraft Story Mode-like Steve). Or, if I actually find a human model (that isn’t Amine), it would work with other human-sized avatars.

Later that day, I’m trying to get a new dance move for the dragon model (because “fuck you, I’m a dragon”). I found, the Macarena Dance to be a good one. I wanted to add more, but I told myself to just test this thing. And it’s a good thing I stopped myself.. because of the hell I went through.
See, I was following this video, and when it said to add the .fbx to the model, and add on to the existing rigging, I was getting an error about the ‘UpperBody’ not matching to the ‘Hips’. It felt like I was going in circles, and being told different things to hopefully fix it.
The problem started to make sense, even to me. The model’s skeleton, the Hips are named ‘UpperBody’ (instead of ‘Hips’, which is confusing the animation). It couldn’t find ‘Hips’ anywhere in the model (and neither could I), and I saw no way to rename ‘UpperBody’ to ‘Hips’.
And when all seemed lost, a super simple workaround was discovered by someone. Instead of fiddling around with the bone structure of the model, to make a duplicate of the animation (and use it (instead of the .fbx)), rename it to what you want the emote (ingame) to say, and then drag the model into the preview. Watching the animation, was quite hilarious.
All there was left, was to move it into the Animation folder, and upload it. Deleted the old copy and uploaded with no problem.

Ingame and infront of a mirror, I saw a new ‘Macarena!’ emote. WOO! I know how to do custom animations emotes now!! Very proud of myself.
However, now I’m debating if the Macarena is appropriate for Gandora, the ‘Dragon of Destruction’ in Yu-Gi-Oh!, and a more ‘roar’ emote would be better. Which what brings me to now, of trying to figure out what emotes would look best with its avatar.
In addition, I wanna try and learn how to add sounds to these emotes (the only thing I’m worried about, is trying to add sounds that aren’t copyrighted).
I need to ask for advice, of what premade emotes I should add to these models. One emote I’d love to have, is a ‘fly and breath fire’ emote for these dragon models.

As to close this blog post, I just wanna say.. meh. My head wasn’t clear when I said how I was “done” with the thing. Even with the boredom, and the sometimes feeling of ‘not fitting in’ (like the people with VR).. the community is what brings me back (just like Wurm).
As someone said, of a thread asking “So what do people do in here?”, “VRChat is pretty much a chatroom, but in 3D.”
And that pretty much convinced me, that I don’t -need- VR to enjoy myself. Sure, it would be nice to have, but it doesn’t replace of having friendships.
, not to give up (and try to learn how to do custom animations). I also never actually uninstalled Unity. I just couldn’t live with myself, to get rid of all that effort. And I feel I made the right decision.
Surely you guys can understand, right? I just need to stop doing this when I get pissed off (over something I cannot control). Walking away and coming back to it later, is the better thing to do.

VRChat: It was fun, until it wasn’t, and why I’m done with it

It’s official: I’m now 100% done with VRChat. The reasoning wasn’t from words I said that were against someone’s opinion, it was simply.. boredom (and being fed up of not having VR).
And to make sure that I’m fully DONE this time, I’ve uninstalled the game, removed myself from two VRChat-related Discord servers, uninstalled Unity (including all the uploaded content, and all the packages I downloaded) …and finally going into Firefox to clearing out my search history of asking about something in VRChat (including going into my Youtube history and removing all watched VRChat videos, hoping I’ll never see this game in my Recommended videos).
Overall, I want to completely remove myself from ever thinking about this game.

You might feel this is going overboard, and you’re probably right. But there’s been a continuing pattern, where people with VR seem to be much more popular (than people like myself who use the Desktop version). And it’s to be expected, because the name is literally there in the game title: ‘VR‘Chat.
It continues to make me wish, that this game was VR-only. But if they did that, they would be shooting themselves in the foot. Having a popular game like that (thanks to YouTubers showing how fucking rich they are), being exclusively for VR ..not many people would be playing it.
The whole reason that Desktop users like myself could play, is this game is nothing but a sales pitch to get people into VR. And it disgusts me. I would rather see the game, not exist at all — than feel like these companies who make and sell these expensive VR sets, are able to cash in on the success of the game.

And, even if I didn’t feel this, and ‘allowed’ this to happen (because of how ‘cool and shiny’ it is (just like I thought when I got into VRChat for the first time), I would likely be dead and cremated, before I ever have the money (and the system), to afford something like this. Hell, I can nearly guarantee it.
Plus, there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to handle the higher pixel rate (and the motion sickness) that comes with it. I have no way of simply.. testing to see if I really -want- VR.

But, whatever. I just need to remove the game from my brain, and never go back. I’ll admit, it was fun while it lasted (and I had some good laughs). But it all fell apart yesterday in Best Boi lands. Watching people with VR get so much attention, being able to hug eachother and just having a good ole time, while I’m sitting on the sidelines with two ‘broken’ arms and legs.
It greatly upsets me (there are actual tears in my eyes IRL from writing this), that I can’t have the same enjoyment they can! It’s like a man who can’t see (and/or hear). I don’t.. belong here. “Why am I even playing this game?” kept going through my mind.
I asked one final question in the VRChat Discord, if there’s any hope for a VR-like experience for Desktop users (in the future). Being able to move your hands, is a good start. …But I want to be able to move my arms, too.
The answer was “they’re working on something, but it’s low priority”. After that.. I snapped and suddenly got furiously angry. And that’s when I wanted to ‘cut ties’ with VRChat, immediately uninstalling the game and removing myself from those Discord servers.

I have no business, playing this game (when I can’t play it the way it was designed).
The Desktop version, should had been a ‘free trial’. And when it expires, has links to get a VR headset (and you can’t play anymore until you get one).
Fucking enforce the ‘VR’ in VRChat!!

Posted in Other, PC | Comments Off on VRChat: It was fun, until it wasn’t, and why I’m done with it

…So why not make my own (2D) avatar?

And I have as well! 😀
This post probably won’t have much interesting content, but it’s to be made as a ‘response’ to my previous one. But after I made the previous post, I found this video showing how to make “the next best thing” (of 3D modeling): 2D modeling (aka taking a picture and making it into an avatar (without requiring the use of Blender)).

The first thing I needed to do, was to get a program I highly debated over in the past (though I forgot the content of said debates). I think it was because how it sounded like a virus.
I’m talking about ‘GIMP'(GNU Image Manipulating Program), like a free version of Photoshop. And since the guy uses it, I’ll use it. No forced account required to use it (a plus for me).
But the main reason I got it, wasn’t because he was using it (got your brain messed up, didn’t I). The real reason is GIMP has an auto-crop feature (which takes the image and chops off all the excess, leaving only the very edges of the image). He said it was highly important to do so.. ergo, why I had to get it.

Moving on, there were two areas of the video, where it felt it was semi-outdated. The first one thankfully, has a known workaround. Basically, tells me to grab the default model in this “ThirdPersonModel’ folder in the VRCSDK folder (but no such folder exists). Instead, it’s under ‘TutorialAvatar’. I’ve questioned why would you even need this model. He claimed it was for reference, but it still made no sense to me.
—–
And the second thing is when he said to get the picture into Unity, either by importing it as an asset (or simply dragging it in). This wasn’t the problem, what was is when he said “now click on the picture and do this on the right”. The ‘this on the right’ part (the Import Properties thing) wasn’t popping up for me, for some odd reason.

Saw there was another video going over the same subject. I felt “hopefully this one is updated” and went to it. This video, didn’t tell me to do the whole “place the default avatar down”, instead it was more to the point.
So I followed it, closely listening to every word he said step-by-step (even having to do a bit of math to keep the aspect ratio of the picture), until eventually it was done and ready to upload. I felt quite excited, knowing that I’ve finally created an avatar (instead of uploading someone else’s work). Granted, it’s not 3D.. but screw that. I.. did this. Myself!! The pride was very strong. 😀

Uploaded it fine, and got into VRChat. I wanted to make a private instance of this ‘Avatar Emporium’ world (as it’s quite popular, but I like its large mirror). Did so and went into it. Opened up the Avatars feature in the window, and saw my upload! EEEEEE!! 😀
…But when I selected it (and was about to change into it), I noticed the avatar was displaying weird. Changed to it, and I saw what so many others in the comments section of that video are having an issue with: 1/4 of the avatar is seen, with 3/4 of it in the ground. And there’s no fix listed anywhere. Ugh!
Asked for help in the Avatars channel of the VRChat Discord. I was half-expecting to get quick assistance (like most people in there), yet it was like I was being shunned for being into 2D modeling (as no one responded to my help requests for what seemed like, many.. many hours). Highly discouraging.
I came close to literally getting on my hands and knees and begging for help, feeling that my posts were being ignored. I did get a few responses, though most of them unfortunately weren’t that helpful.

Later on, I had the attention of a few people that were really trying to help me. They asked if the avatar has a bone structure, and I tried to reference them to the second video I watched (and saying how a lot of people are having the same issue).
One said that I might have to add a single bone on the bottom, for it to fix the issue.. but says I would have to use Blender. I talked myself into doing so, being slightly warned about the highly-complicated UI from one other person. Got it installed, and… that person was NOT kidding! WTF is all of THIS shit?! Here I thought Unity was out of my league ..this is WORSE! “Told you!” said the person who was warning me about the UI. Another person said “ehh, it’s not that bad”.

I said “whatever, now how do I add this bone on the bottom?” Was told to upload my model. Looked at the Import options, and I’m not seeing anything about ‘Unity File’ and mentioned this to them. One said “Blender doesn’t support .unitypackage, you’ll need the .fbx or an .obj”, but I wasn’t seeing this anywhere.
Sent a DM to this person who was helping me the most, who wanted pictures of what I was trying to do in Unity. We talked back and forth about the issue for a half an hour. The person found a converter for me, that will work.. the catch, is it costs $100 to download. WTF?! Yes, that’s real world money, I would have to pay. FUCK that noise!
It was not looking promising for me, running out of options to fix the issue. I tried playing with colorful buttons, turning knobs and pulling levers.. ANYTHING, to fix the issue. But nothing was working! WHY?! Why can I not have nice things, without feeling like I have to break one of my body parts to ease the pain of having to learn 3D modeling?!
The person showed me a few pictures in Blender (that gave me one idea). It said “notice the feet are in the floor?” This got me thinking, that maybe the model was too high up (and tried adjusting it). Sadly when testing ingame, I saw the same thing.
UGH!! The person apologized for not being able to help me (and sounded quite sincere). Told them it wasn’t their fault.
Before I closed out the DM, the person also grabbed my attention with another thing I noticed. Uploading the model keeps acting like it’s a new model, instead of an existing one(telling me to type in the info everytime I upload). Was told to ‘detach the Pipeline Manager’ to fix it, and that it’s a bug with the new SDK. But when doing so, I lost the ability to upload. What’s even more intriguing of what this person’s telling me, is “it’ll claim it uploaded, but nothing’s there”. It made me think all of these attempts to fix it, were not being applied.
Yet that’s silly, telling them a few days ago that I uploaded two avatars just fine. They said “it started happening today”, which makes literally no sense. I have the same version of the SDK I had when they updated it with the new update of VRChat.
I managed to restore the functionality of the upload, by allowing the pipeline manager (whatever it is).

Left the DM, and asked them is there still a way to import this to Blender (without having an .fbx or an .obj file). They were extremely confused why the model didn’t have an .fbx to begin with. One person linked a wiki post, of this code that has a .obj converter. Oh great, first 3D modeling, and now coding. Angry must be laughing his head off right now (if he was reading this).
Was told “its in this language, the coding is already done for you”, but when I asked how do I add this (as I don’t have any coding software installed), was told Unity has an “add C#” option for adding an asset, which I remember seeing before.

Instead… I completely wiped out the project and started from scratch (thinking I maybe did something wrong). And this second time, would prove to be my God and Savior.
But before I could get there, I had another issue– the transparency of the picture wasn’t working correctly in Unity. The shit didn’t make sense ..you were working before, why are you having an issue now??
I assumed it could’ve been a possible fragment of the old attempt. Verified I deleted everything of the old project, and restarted Unity. Same thing. Reported the issue, and got a fairly quick response. Instead of making a texture ball using Legacy Shaders > Transparency > Diffuse (as both videos said to do), to use Unlit > Transparent Cutout, and this worked!
I also noticed I was seeing that ‘Import Properties’ thing (that the first video said). Thought I finally found hope, and watched the first video again, restarting it from the beginning.
He did the tutorial avatar thing again. Continued to watch, then noticed he was trying to match the height of the Plane with the height of the model! My eyes bugged out, realizing THIS was the reason I was having so much difficulty!! I had it too tall! Wow. Not only that, but he showed me the proper way of setting the Avatar Descriptor (which was different than what I was told from the other video). He said the X axis is -only- if the model has a skeleton, and showed how to move the Plane (not the model) to get the Descriptor to be between the eyes of the model.
All I had to do next is to make the other side visible (which is one of the easiest parts of doing 2D modeling), and then upload.
Deleted the old upload (for some reason, the upload I made didn’t overwrite what I did) and got into VRChat. Closed my eyes and loaded the avatar, thinking I would have the same issue..
IT WORKS!! IT FUCKING WORKS!! 😀
Ohh HELL YES! FUCK YOU, Blender! I never needed you! 🙂 I actually felt like it would work this time, when he showed to match the height of the default avatar.

You have no idea how happy I am, actually making something and feeling proud that I did. I just wonder what others will think.
What I really hope for (which I feel is highly unlikely), is to meet someone that’ll say “Hey, I could make that into a 3D model for you, no charge”. You know I would jump for that.

Posted in PC | Comments Off on …So why not make my own (2D) avatar?

Protip: Don’t ask for a custom avatar if you’re not willing to spend “hundreds of dollars”

Where do I start with this (that I’ll eventually edit this 20+ times when I eventually think of a better way to write it)?
Let me take you back in time, to last week. It’s when I was still trying to figure out how to work with that ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’ model in Unity. I was so frustrated and said “Oh how I wish I could just ask someone to just make me an avatar”(or something of the sort). I got a link to this ‘VRC Traders’ Discord server. Went to it, and was quite confused on where you go to make a request.
The person gave me the correct channel(I can’t remember the name, but it had the word ‘free’ in it), and I went there. I knew what I wanted an avatar of… however, for some very, very strange reason, most of the old forum avatars I had, are all gone from my computer (including the dragon gif I stole grabbed from a website many years ago). All I remember was a folder called ‘AVATARS’ somewhere, but a complete drive search was no help. I even tried to look for phrases that I think I used back then… and again, nothing.
Shockingly, the website that I grabbed the gif, still exists to this day (thought I was going to have to use the Wayback Machine website to locate it). And I was able to grab the gif once again, and threw it as a request.

A few days passed after that, and I got no responses. I tried posting it again, thinking my request got buried behind everyone else’s.
The next day(just a few days ago), I got a response. Thought “awesome! Someone’s actually going to do it!”… what I got both made me understand (and infuriated me) at the same time. I was told that what I had requested, would be upwards of “hundreds of dollars for something you want done free”.
Understanding Side(common sense): Yeah, I get 3D modeling isn’t cheap. I guessed I asked too much.
Furious side: …Hundreds of DOLLARS, FOR AN AVATAR?! WTF!! That’s higher than my fucking PC budget! And why in the FUCK is the channel even have the word ‘free’ in it, if you’re not willing to DO it for free?!
But the more I think about it, I think I was asking too much. I was hoping that they could rig it and even add custom animations. And.. come ON, who in the hell would even bother doing all of that work for nothing!? I sure wouldn’t if I was one of them!
Though.. hundreds of dollars for an avatar? DAMN! I’m not asking for voice actors here! It’s just an avatar to a video game! It’s not like I’m building my own video game through Unity and I need the asset!

I also came -this- close to asking “well, could you guys possibly teach me how to do it? That way I could do it myself.” But my unwillingness to learn, stopped me. All I would be doing, is wasting their time. If I’m ever going to be “good” at 3D modeling, I HAVE to be willing to learn… or I’m never going to get anywhere (outside of wishing I was good).
I can wish until I was blue in the face. But wishing isn’t the same as putting in actual effort to learn a new thing.

There is no Fairy Godmother when you’re 41-years-old. You either put in the effort, or you don’t. Simple as that. And my childish brain refuses to listen sometimes.
So the moral of this story is: don’t expect hard work to be done for free.

VRChat updated, with a long-awaited want

I’ve been so busy in Astroneer (fuming over the fact that Power resource nodes no longer charge the batteries of a rover). On top of that, having two sources of power on each end, two-way power is no longer possible (aka, having the two medium solar panels take over for the medium wind turbine, that isn’t possible anymore).
It really forces you to re-think how you played the game in the past. But I’m not saying that I hate dislike all the changes. Being able to finally have a custom base, is pretty awesome. It opens up so much potential. Such as having a base on another planet (apart from your main base) that can act as a refueling station for your shuttle.
And the coolest thing, is the Extenders. It might be possible, to set up a power grid on the pole of a planet, and use these things to go alllllll the way back to your base.
(Editor’s Note: The Power resource node being ‘useless’ is a known issue, and will be fixed in a (hopefully coming soon) patch.)

But anyway, as I said I’ve been quite busy, that I didn’t notice VRChat has gotten an update, and the first thing in the changelog caught my eye;
Avatar Pedestals save between sessions. My jaw dropped to the floor (and my hands went skyward) when I read what this was about!! HOLY FUCK, it’s like they listened to me! Now, when you select an avatar from one of the many worlds.. it will NO LONGER default back to the last used Public avatar when you log out!! Instead, it will now use the avatar you chose when you log back in! 😀 HOLY FUCK YES!!! Now I can finally stop feeling that I’m forced to learn 3D modeling! It’ll now forever feel optional. 🙂

And there is also much, much more to this update;
-A new ‘Panic Mode’ (a series of keys). This seems useful in large rooms (and for people who are very asocial). Holding down both your Shift keys and hitting Esc(for Desktop users), mutes everyone in the room (that isn’t one of your friends).
-Desktop users now can make hand gestures, by using Left Shift with F1-F8 for Left hand gestures, and Right Shift for right hand gestures. At this time, it’s not possible to move your virtual arms (outside of VR/motion tracking of course).
-They’ve fixed ‘audio spatialization'(the feeling of hearing sound from all directions) with avatars that have this. Seems to be VR-only.
-Custom avatars that have sounds, are now part of the ‘SFX’ slider in the System menu. In future updates, this will have its own slider.
-The VRChat SDK has been updated (see important note below) to include a new feature when uploading someone else’s (or your own custom made) avatar: Public and Private access. Putting an avatar on Private, other people are not allowed to use your avatar (and potentially steal your hard work). Private avatars on avatar pedestals are marked with a padlock.
–In addition, you can change the properties of your existing uploaded avatars through the SDK’s ‘Manage Uploaded Content’ option (without having to re-upload the avatar).
(Important note for 3D modelers. You must delete the ‘VRCHATSDK’ folder from Unity completely, before importing the new SDK. Don’t try to overwrite what’s already there)

Unfortunately, they still didn’t fix the Help Videos. But it’s not that big of a deal (to me).
But these are great, fun updates. And as for if I’ll Private the avatars I’ve uploaded, of course I’m not (as they weren’t made by me). I have no rights to the models, as they were made free for anyone to use through VRCmods.com.

Astroneer ‘Basebuilding Update’ (version 0.6.0.0) RELEASED!

In a world, where you feel you’re being ‘forced’ to learn how to use Unity and mess with 3D modeling JUST to upload someone else’s work into a video game.. you can’t help but miss the times of just being a gamer (and not having to deal with this).
And it seems that Astroneer dev company ‘System Era’ has “come to the rescue”, with an update labeled “the biggest update to date”.. even bigger than the Research Update.

I’m talking about the ‘Basebuilding Update’ that was just released this afternoon, without warning. The only way I even knew about this, is from a trailer they released on their official Youtube channel. It visually goes over the update of what you can do.. and you can do a LOT with this thing!
Base Building has clearly been overhauled for the better (or maybe for the worse, depending how you might look at it).
And as a bonus for people with save games, they have tried everything humanly possible to save you old save games. When loading up an old save, it will try to convert your current base (and bases on other planets), into the new format. But IMO, to get the best experience of the new update, a new game is recommended.

After playing through the early stages of the game for awhile, this is what I’ve found (that is so much different compared to what I remember).
-When landing on Terran, the pod you landed on turns into a large realistic habitat (exactly what was seen in the latest SCS Vlog).
-The Habitat has three lights that automatically turn on at night, and off in the day.
-There’s a new thing that comes down with you. This is your Landing Pad. It’s used to call down your first small platform (and a new module: the Fabricator). This same pad is also used for your invited friends in Multiplayer.
-Modules (aka the Smelter and the Research Chamber), require the Fabricator (placed on the small platform).
-When a module is fully 3D printed by the Fabricator, it becomes packaged. This can be placed on a Medium Platform and then unpackaged by holding down the E key. It is unknown (at this time) if the modules can be re-packaged.
-All modules are now using the same mechanics as the speed of the Research Chamber. Aka, they require constant power in order to run at an efficient speed.
-Organic placed next to a Small Generator will now automatically be placed on the generator(if it’s not currently running).

So here’s a list of issues I found. Said issues might not bug you, but they need to be mentioned;
-While it was possible to place things when sitting in the old Habitat, this is no longer possible with the new one.
-The two notches on the new Habitat(to replace the ones of the old pod), currently do not allow resources to be placed on them. But I’m sure this will be fixed in the near future.
-You have to hold your E key to enter/exit the Habitat (instead of just tapping it). I would assume this works the same way for seats. You also have to hold your Q key to start research.

..And for some quite hilarious ‘bugs’;
-It’s possible to carry a medium platform with you (for long distances), and place it down to receive oxygen. Never having to use Tethers much?
-The Research Chamber will work.. even when there’s no power (or even when disconnected from the Habitat). Lol, what?

And that’s about it for me. Overall, nice update. I can feel a lot of time and effort was put into it. Don’t particularly like having to hold down buttons now, but it’s something I’ll get used to.

“All I wanted to do was upload someone’s model!”

Another VRChat-related post, but this one has been (mainly) outside of the game. And boy, do I have a lot to say. Ever since I got into VRChat and got to see what it was like being a Best Boi, I also wanted a dragon avatar. And last night into this morning, I’ve been looking high and low in many, many worlds, trying to find it. I remember a world (from a video), that had one.. and I can’t find it! I’ve asked countless people, including the VRChat Discord.. but no one knew where I could find one. They were too busy with their own thing.

A bit later in the day, I got a response from the Discord server. They knew of an avatar, but it wasn’t in any words, but a website called ‘VRCmods.com’, and to try out this model of a strange dragon-like thing I’ve never seen in my life. It looked pretty crappy, but I was able to search for more. There aren’t a lot of dragon avatars here sadly, except for this angry-faced Dragonite.
Seeing how my options are very limited, I thought “screw it, I guess I’ll go as a Dragonite (and I’m not even into Pokemon)”. But when I went to look for the installation instructions, expecting to see ‘download the model and plop it into a folder’, and go (or use some kind of installer to do it).
…Instead, it’s telling me to download and install Unity. ..WHAT the HELL?? But..But!! Unity is for 3D Modelers (and people that make games using the engine)! WHY in the FUCK is this a requirement, to upload someone’s content?!
Where in the hell is the Steam Workshop for this game?!

Hoping I read this wrong, I did a search in Youtube in hopes to find an alternative way to install the thing. Sadly, they’re all saying the same thing of using Unity.
Ugh.. FINE. Since Unity is freeware, I’ll do it. Found this video, claiming it’s ‘the easiest way to upload models’. It says to also get the ‘VRChat SDK’. Wow. This is bullshit. A normal user shouldn’t be having to go through this!!
Whatever, let’s just get this SDK. VRChat.com has the SDK, and tells me I have to make a VRChat Account. Though what I didn’t know (until later), is this same account would be the primary means of logging into VRChat. Also, this is the only way I can use custom avatars (I cannot do it through my Steam account, but I can still log into the game through Steam). But now I have the username ‘Benie’ locked in (without the numbers/letters on the end).
Now it’s time to grab Unity. It too wants an account. Oy. Though when I attempted to make it, I noticed on the bottom of the page that I had the option of alternatively using either my Google or Facebook account to login, and used my Google account. Everything ‘seemed’ to be working. Felt “this is great, now I won’t have to make a separate account!”
Feeling that Unity itself would use my Google account when I log in, I typed in the info and clicked the button… wrong username/password. Spammed the fuck out of that button in rage until my IP got temp blocked. To tell me I could use Google, then to say I couldn’t!? WTF MAN?!
I tried asking for help in Discord. One was all “do what ‘Lord Unity’ says” instead of just helping me. I tried a more ‘advanced’ support area of the Discord server; the Avatar section. Unfortunately, they too weren’t much help (telling me to just go on and make a Unity account).
Fine.. I’ll make my second fucking forced account. That’s now done, and after literally what felt like 10 minutes of installing itself, I now have Unity on my computer.

The video tells me to install the SDK into Unity(and shows how to do it), and do it with no problem. It then says to go to this different website than VRCmods.com, this ‘models-resource.com’, and then pick a desired model (and get it into Unity). This website has a lot more dragon models. Most of them are quadruped (which I was told on Discord, to avoid due to them not being able to animate properly.. or something).
So I skipped this step, planning to stick with the Dragonite model. Now I’m thinking all I need to do is just throw that model into Unity. Makes perfect sense.
…That was until the guy says “now go to Mixamo.com and create an account with them!”
You know those cartoon thermometers, that rise up all the way and explode to yell at you? That was my anger level at this time.
Forced to make an account to get the SDK. Fine. Forced to make an account to get Unity, annoying but fine.. but a 3RD FUCKING ACCOUNT, JUST TO UPLOAD A GOD DAMN MODEL?! What was worse (which nearly made me say “fuck this”), is him suddenly having a model in this program that he was working on (and now we’ll just suddenly go to this).
HOW IN THE FUCK IS THIS HELPFUL TO ME, ASSHOLE?! HUH?!?!

Oh my GOD. I quit the video after that. I couldn’t believe the nerve of that guy. This is NOT ‘the easiest way to upload models’!! Fucking CLICKBAIT!
My only option now, was to pester the modelers in the Avatars channel by begging them for help. I also tried to look for another video, but they all show that this ‘Mixamo’ website was a requirement. Why?!
I eventually got my answer later on. It’s a website for models that aren’t ‘rigged’ (having a humanoid bone structure for realistic movement). Even when all I wanna do is upload someone’s model, I got to make sure it’s fully rigged. Was told most of the models on VRCmods.com (as long as they’re marked somewhere in their description) are already rigged and ready to upload.
So I grabbed the Dragonite model and threw it on Unity (using the very limited knowledge I got from the video). The model was pink and hard to see the actual model, and according to its description, it requires ‘cubed shaders’ (whatever the hell they are). Someone was able to find a link for me, and painstakingly helped me to apply said shaders (and to apply them to these pink texture ‘dots’).
The model itself is no longer pink, and I was able to see its infamous ‘T-Pose’. I also was able to find its rigging, indicating it was ready. But the help for my extremely newbish questions, stopped coming when I suddenly wasn’t able to texture the other ‘dots’ (managed to do the first one by dragging it to this ‘Normal Map’ option). Thankfully I was able to figure it out myself. Found there’s a little notch next to the Normal Map that you click on, to texture it. And I got the other dots done.

There was also something else the guy wanted me to look into; seeing if the animations are working. But as I said, he stopped talking to me (doing his own thing). I waited a good 45 minutes until someone else responded. This person assumed I was trying to do custom animations.. uhh, no. Another person told this person “no, he(myself) doesn’t want custom animations. The model would use the default animations of the SDK” (which is what I was told by the first person).
So now, I can finally upload the damn thing! Hala-fucking-looya!! Able to FINALLY do the thing I’ve wanted to do before I started this bullshit! Unity allowed me to name ‘my’ model (and give it a description). I named it what was on the website, and gave credit to the modeler in the description. Now, all there’s left to do, is load up VRChat and… there it was! My first custom model! WOO! 😀

Yet from all of that hell I went through (plus that 3rd forced account.. of something I didn’t even have to use), I felt this model wasn’t really paying for itself. I talked to the modelers about it, and one said “U get used to it”. Ehh.. maybe. But definitely not right now. Not when years, I’ve been used to downloading a file and dropping it into a folder, and that’s it.
I also asked in the public chat channels of Discord, of why isn’t Steam Workshop support a thing. This turned into a pretty unfortunate thing of a lot of people saying “oh boo hoo, you have to go through so much!” Another one said that Workshop support “will never come”, and to “get used to it”.

And..I’ve been ..-trying-, to do that. I did find another model on VRCmods.com the next day (I’m talking in the future here, after editing this blog post 11 times now). The reason I wanted another model, is people were assuming I was into Pokemon (with some saying “you were the worst in Pokemon Go”). As funny as it was, I can’t use an avatar belonging to a game I have only a small knowledge of.
Instead, I tried to get that weird dragon that was originally mentioned to me. This one doesn’t require me to use any shaders or anything of that. Just upload and go. Easy.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t so. I didn’t like how when I looked in a mirror, it was looking at the model’s lower neck. And after a lot of time troubleshooting (and learning what ‘vispos’ and ‘Avatar Descriptor’ is), I eventually found the issue on my own. The top of the head bone in the rigging, was in the lower neck of the model (aka, where I’m seeing the view). This happens with non-humanoid models, what I was told. I was also told to -not- grab a model if has less than four fingers (for full body tracking with VR). But since I have no headset, that’s not really an issue.
The only other thing that was an issue with the model, is the arm bones of the rigging were below the actual arms of the model. And ingame, they look ‘broken’ as hell.
Was told the only way to fix this, is to use Blender. NOPE! Nope nope nope nope NOPE! I’m not going that advanced to fix someone’s model.

I did manage to find (and upload) two more models (and they work great). The first one is called the ‘Dorugoramon'(that’s definitely a mouthful) from Digimon Masters(it looks like a human and a dragon, and fits well with the rigging). And the second, is a Murloc from WoW (that I saw someone else use). You also have the option with the second model, to change the texture to any of the other Murloc types in WoW. Yet I don’t know how to go about doing that.

.
In closing of this post, seeing other people using cool custom animations makes me feel quite jealous. No matter how much I wish I was this good with 3D modeling, I know I’m not. But there’s like this feeling, of “Hmm, look at you, how you know things you didn’t before. Why don’t you take it up 10 notches by making your own model?”
And I wish I could give some choice words to my brain, by telling it to fuck off, and how I never wanted any part of this. If the game had the option to ‘save’ an avatar in the game (or have Steam Workshop support), I would had never touched Unity.
But I did, and it’s really starting to eat at me of “missing potential”. Plus I can hear (in my head) the sounds of people laughing, looking at me, and pointing fingers and laughing at me for being the only one in the entire game that never made their own custom avatar. And that feeling came from heading to the VRChat Times Square world in hopes I could just clear my head.
Seeing billboards with “Have YOU created your personal avatar today?”, and an ad about Unity (with Blender on the side). ..GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HEAD!!

In all seriousness, I had to do what I had to do. I burned the billboard down. 😛
