The 7 Hour Playthrough, and thoughts (Bendy and the Ink Machine)

A 7 hour playthrough you say? It was actually more like 4 hours (most of the time was from minimizing the game and forgetting it was running). But that’s still a bit long (even for me).
(UPDATE: Chapter 4 now has a title: ‘Colossal Wonders’. Unknown if this is the official title, but it hints at something.. well, big that Alice Angel is planning)

And that’s why I’m here, to give my personal theories and opinions of the three chapters. And I shall get the ball rolling, with Chapter 1: ‘Moving Pictures’.
Upon seeing the letter given to Henry (the protagonist of the story) from a Joey Drew, I suddenly started thinking… does Joey Drew even exist (and it was Bendy who sent the letter)? Then again, who’s inside this ‘imperfect’ Bendy?
A friend of mine has theorized that Alice Angel sent the letter, given how she has human features. That’s possible as well.
Moving on (to the point where you’re tasked to collect the six parts to start the Ink Machine), there’s this video explaining why it’s now quite frustrating to find them (and will only get worse in future updates). And I too was affected by this.

For example, it took quite a long time to find the Inkwell and the Gear. Eventually found the gear behind a doorway (forgot where).. but the Inkwell took the most time.
I had to look in the wiki, only to be told the obvious “it’s randomized” answer. Yet it told me the several places where it might be (which is better than anything Google told me). One such place, is the new Art Room that was added in a recent update. According to that video, there’s ‘a 60% chance the item isn’t in the new rooms’… but I got the 40% chance it was. Finding the room, claims it was in the room with the dead Boris (behind the door there). Yet the game told me that doors cannot be opened (unless slightly).
Went there, tried to open the door… it opens, and there it fucking was, right infront of me. An hour of my life, wasted looking for this piece of shit! Wow.

Moving on to Chapter 2: ‘The Old Song’. Most of the level went as expected (as I’ve seen in many Youtube videos), until I got to the point of entering Sammy’s sanctuary. You got to find the keys from this guy, which could be in one of several trash cans. Thankfully it didn’t take as long to find the keys (compared to the Inkwell), mainly because the item now has an “I’m important, click on me!” glow effect. Then came the “learn Sammy’s favorite song” part. I entered the recording room, and Henry’s all “I know I need to do something, but I feel like I’m missing something.” I’m all.. “what?! You know the song, what more could you need?!” Never did it occur to me, that I needed to turn on the projector, and then hit the right notes.
After that was done, there was an issue at the very end when Henry meets a very much alive Boris, where the game freezes up for about 30 seconds before the end credits roll. My friend tells me that’s ‘perfectly normal’… riiight.

And the final (currently playable until possibly the end of April) chapter: Chapter 3: ‘Rise and Fall’. Most of the chapter (much like Chapter 2), played as expected. I wanted to try to get the tommy gun (of Alice Angel’s 6th request… huh, this is the second time ‘6 of something’ is used, with the first time being the 6 items needed in Chapter 1.)
There was a few times I had issues. The first time (of when Bendy’s roaming the halls), I didn’t think of walking backwards when he appeared (and killed me). Second time (coming back from doing Alice Angel’s 4th request), Bendy is around the corner.. but isn’t moving. Find him stuck on a bit of the wall (shambling in place), and forced to let him kill me (just to reset the encounter).
The 5th request from Alice (of killing The Butcher Gang), I died.. a lot. Soon discovered your footing in this miniboss battle is crucial, to prevent more Searchers from spawning in and making the battle harsher (as the pipe does less damage than the axe).

And that’s about it. Completed all the chapters, and I’m currently waiting for Chapter 4. Hopefully they have removed most of the fetching quests that have been an issue for the first three chapters. I hope it’s a free update.
One other thing I’d like to see changed, is the glow of the tape players being removed after listening to the playback (to show the player they’re not going to get any more info for listening to it multiple times).
And now, I bring you my own personal theories of Chapter 4. Because I see a major one just going by the Steam achievements (here). Most of these achievements, seem to be hinting to possible carnival games. I am damn surprised no one has done a theory video of this. Though my friend (who I shared this theory with), feels the reason that its because you can hear the sound of carnival music at the end of the first Chapter 4 teaser trailer.

In any case, I feel the purpose of the carnival rides are a way for Henry to ‘win back Boris’ from Alice Angel (while possibly dealing with more enemies, as the ‘angel’ doesn’t play fair). Because there’s also an achievement for reuniting with Boris, proving he’s not dead (yet).

VRChat Developer Update (#1) released, my thoughts

This will likely be a quick blog post of my thoughts, with the first VRChat Developer Update video. Shortly after this, I’ll be doing my analysis of Bendy and the Ink Machine‘s Chapters 1, 2, and 3 (and why I too am eagerly awaiting Chapter 4).
And now, on with our feature presentation!

If you’re a part of any community (that’s a part of VRChat), it’s likely someone pasted the link to a video, titled ‘VRChat Developer Update #1‘ (linked for your viewing pleasure). When I originally saw the title of this video, I thought the person that posted it, accidentally posted a necro post (because surely the devs wouldn’t be doing their first update video.. when the game has been out since late last year). But when I kept seeing this video posted in every VRChat community Discord server I’m a part of (plus a discussion about it), I started to take notice (and eventually watched it).
Tupper (the guy speaking) started going over the “massive population growth” (aka the ‘Ugandan Knuckles era’), and what they had to do in order to deal with it. They say to expect more update videos “on an every other week basis” (roughly, every two weeks), explaining that they want to keep the community informed “as reasonably possible” to upcoming (and future) changes to VRChat.
Future Benie update: LIES!!
Now let me stop right there, by thanking them so much for wanting to do this. It (obviously) shows to me, the devs definitely care for the community (and their game).
I was wrong assuming this…
This feels almost similar to the updates the Space Engineers devs were doing every Thursday, when the game was in its Alpha state.
Moving on, they’ve split the discussion into six groups, starting with Safety.

What I was looking forward to, is if they’ll finally start harshly cracking down on hackers who are stealing avatars. Instead, they state “security and safety are jobs that will always require more work, and are tasks that will never end.”
“tasks that will never end”…? Huh?
Let’s stop here. Is this literally saying “hackers will never stop”, or saying that the struggle to get rid of them “will never end”? I would assume it’s the latter.
It’s 2021, and it’s even worse than it was back then.

So now they’re talking about ‘Safe Mode’, something I personally have never had a need to use (yet always manage to trigger it without even trying to)… and I hope they address these issues.
And finally, they talk about the other ways of blocking people (or reporting to the staff for being a hacker).

Next discussion… ‘Playmaker’. I’ve heard this thing get discussed a lot in the VRChat Discord server (mainly in the #worlds channel) — how it will revolutionize the way you do world building (by actually making a game within VRChat (or even in your own Inde game)). Currently, the version of Playmaker on the Unity Asset Store, isn’t compatible with 5.6.0. .. It also costs $65 USD (with a current $13 off discount).
So wait. Does this mean, this part of the discussion.. is nothing but an advertisement for an upcoming paid Unity asset?!
Actually, that might not be the case. Yet what kills me, is Tupper’s acting like they own the rights to Playmaker (when it shows this ‘Hutong Games LLC’ does on the Asset Store), saying they’ve been working on a “very limited” closed beta for players to join, and will allow more as the development continues.
Hey VRChat, stop acting like you own the rights to Playmaker. Give the actual developers credit (by naming their company)!! He never even said “we’re working hard with Hutong Games to get Playmaker into your hands”.

Next discussion… ‘Home’. This is something I’ve heard getting bounced around a few times in the past (and it’s kind of the reason why I wanted to create my own world). But now it’ll soon be a reality. Tupper explains that you will no longer appear in The Hub, but in an instanced world called ‘VRChat Home’. It would be small enough “for only you, and a few friends”. Essentially, it’ll replace the need for The Hub being the place to teach new players the basics.
Two additional things. The first, similar to Safe Mode, you’ll be able to ‘quick teleport’ back to your home world with the correct button (or keyboard) press. And the second, you will no longer have to go into Steam and fiddle with VRChat’s advanced launcher settings (aka putting in the World ID), as you will be able to pick your (logging into VRChat) spawn world.. ingame!! That is so nice!
It’s release date as he states, is to look for it “in the next couple of updates”. Sounds like ‘SoonTM’ to me.
Thank fuck you don’t have to do this anymore.

Next discussion… Vive Controls. This discussion is very brief, stating people who have the highly expensive paperweight.. err, sorry.. the HTC Vive, have been requesting a way to toggle “the old Vive movement system” on and off.
His response is, the devs haven’t forgotten about it, and it’ll come.. ‘SoonTM’. lmao.
Sucks for Vive users (who have wanted this). But I’m glad (for them) that it’ll come.. just, when they have time.

Next discussion… ‘Coldfront’. The world that Tupper (and his dev buddies who are running around in this segment) is simply called this. It’s coming out, right now. And I wonder if the name is a direct burn to Mother Nature for not making it Spring yet (due to getting so many rollercoaster rides this April with strong cold fronts).

What it is, is a King of the Hill-style combat world, having weapons to kill other players with (that get parashooted into random spots).
The goal is to get to the center of the map, which is a large tower. At the top of the tower, has a “command case”. Hitting the button on the case, your VRChat username is displayed map-wide “for bragging rights”, (and the game is over).
He goes on to say that they plan to ‘play’ with certain features (aka nerfing or buffing specific weapons, and/or redesigning specific areas seen as an unfair advantage to the enemy) as time goes on.
As far as I know, they have abandoned the world idea in favor of SDK3 content.

Final discussion… Feedback. A simple reminder to join the VRChat Discord server (if you haven’t done already) starts off the discussion. There’s also this ‘Canny‘ service, claiming it’s the best way to get ahold of them.
There’s also two email addresses, with the first that you can simply say just how awesome VRChat is; being ‘Hello@vrchat.com’. And second, all job inquiries (resume and cover letter) can go to ‘Jobs@vrchat.com’.

To close out the video, is 33 seconds of shenanigans with the new world, with the Benny Hill theme playing.
And that’s about it! Great first update, and I liked how it didn’t feel too serious. It was easy to understand (at least for myself), and I look forward to video #2 in the next two weeks.
Though I gotta say, I’m quite hyped for the VRChat Home feature (especially being able to select the world you spawn into (once you login) ingame, instead of having to mess with the World ID in Steam’s advanced launcher settings (for VRChat)..

Why ‘Bendy and the Ink Machine’ deserves your money

“HOLY SHIT!! He’s actually talking about GAMES in his Games Blog again?!?! Someone pinch me!!” you’re probably saying from reading the title. And you have every right to be. I’ll admit, I haven’t been actually talking about games in here (outside of playing on my PS4).

Anyway, this post is about why TheMeatly deserves your money. Now you know me, I don’t typically talk about horror-based games (as my heart can’t stand jumpscares that well), but this game.. deserves to be talked about (and highly praised). However, what’s been said about how ascetically gorgeous this game is, has already been said enough times already.
And consider this. Chapter 1, is free. FREE! It costs NOTHING for you to download right now, and experience the world of Bendy. And currently, you can get Chapter 2 and 3, and save $1.80 USD. Yes that’s not much of a bargain, but the quality of the chapters pay itself (well, apart from the repetitiveness of near the end of Chapter 3, but they’re working on it).
What’s more important, when Chapter 4 is released, the changes to the three chapters (that come with it) will be applied; and Meatly requests (that if you still want to play the older version), to do so before the release.

If you care for the continuation of this game (and the effort Team Meatly is doing for Chapter 4 (that has taken the most time than any other chapter), don’t you feel he deserves your $11? I think so.

Best weekend ever (since joining VRChat)? Possibly.

This is a half world building post, and the other half compromising of the best thing to ever happen (since joining VRChat). And best of all, there was very little drama (compared to two weeks ago).
First off, I haven’t even started doing the house. Half of me feels I have to do it, while the other half feels there’s got to be a ‘workaround’ to this. And that ‘workaround’ is to put the whole private world idea on the back burner, and focus on what I’m currently working on (and continue to update it)… and even that is facing backlash (in my head).
See, I want to do something with the entrance of the world, but I can’t fully think of just what I want to do.. apart from making it where you can no longer see the outside of the world. And that thing would affect my original shack (and has done so since I did the path and the covered bridge). I feel I need to move the furniture to one of those two houses I have at the end of the covered bridge (and then set up a button to reset all throwables).. yet I also don’t want to feel I’m ‘getting rid of’ the shack. In a way, it’s good to move on and move away from things I started with. But I also don’t want to get rid of what I started with at the same time.
Perhaps a secret area, where only my very best of friends can go to, would be able to see it. But to keep it a secret, would be a challenge. In any case, I made a prefab of my house (in order to plop it exactly as-is, wherever I want).

Another idea I had, is doing what Kibble has done for the Best Boi lands. Though it’s not as much as making themed sections, but ‘chopping’ the long path up with teleporters (to make the walk less boring).
In the middle, I’m strongly considering going with the ‘creek and the small picnic area’ idea I had. And the fact the player walk space would be protected by a ‘dome’, I can curl the creek into a corner to where players won’t see its end point (and would only assume it continues).
And as for the end of the covered bridge, I’m thinking (just now as I type this), to continue the path by wrapping it up in some direction, to where there would be three cabins (and a campfire/seating in the middle). And I could have this facing the river, with possibly a path leading down to a small bridge for fishing (minus the fishing poles, of course). And as for the cabins, I’ll build these (using the house wall assets I have) to where they’ll closely resemble public cabins from the Cartoon Network TV show; ‘Camp Lazlo‘. I’ve already successfully done this on my island (on the MRT Server), so it hopefully could be done in VRChat.
The campsite here, would be considered the ‘lobby’ for the world.

Other than that, all throwable objects would need to be in a centralized area (aka at the ‘hub’), where I can easily reset them. What I have now, kind of feels dumb (yet it was just a test at the time, to set up a reset button for the chairs). In the close future, this will be removed.
And finally to close this part out, I got Oliver to finally check out my world for the first time ever. He really liked what I did, but suggested I fix the ‘uprooted’ trees. I’ll do this, but he unfortunately was unable to tell me.. why the tree collider thing (when mass-placing trees with the terrain tools), isn’t fucking working.
There’s also another issue with the world. However, this isn’t blamed on me, but the way the game handles loading videos (for video players). The problem, is seeing a black screen for nearly a minute (before the world finally loads up). I was told it’s the fact VRChat tries to load them all at the same time (instead of one at a time). And attempting to convert the files to MP4 (and locally storing them), wouldn’t fix the problem.

And now, Part 2 of this blog post. Just woke up and I’m a bit tired, but I’ll do what I can. Just a fair warning (from last night), my words may seem fragmented.. because I’m going off of mere thought (and pics I took). I may update when necessary.
With that out of the way, let’s begin. Part 2 started off pretty sluggish, I was disgusted at myself (and at Unity), for not being able to come up with an idea. Decided to just browse the Discord servers.
Twitchin suddenly says “GUYS! Telephone is on the server” Thought “hmm, cool! Might as well get in there to meet her!” After loading into my world (and waiting that glorious minute of a black screen), I went to the Best Boi lands, and saw a horde of people crowded around the chapel door. There’s a guy with a big avatar, that I assumed was Telephone. Turns out they weren’t, and instead it was someone named ‘Naruto22661’ who was losing her mind trying all the emotes of the Sword Boi.

So this is the legendary Telephone; the creator of the Dutch Angel Dragon fursuit. But as she was talking, she got someone else to take over for her (who’s a guy). I don’t know if this is her brother, boyfriend or husband. But he was pretty cool as well. While that was happening, Captain Ruth (on his account) was here as well, and saw me in my Murloc avatar and said how I look awesome (and I said the same to him), and he friended me. That’s pretty cool.
To celebrate Telephone coming to see what she inspired Kibble to make (and after quite the delay), we headed to the Amusement Park (not Funland.. yet). But before we could ride any rides, the people that were there convinced him to create a VRChat account.

Myself however, was close to the action. I look away for about a minute, then look towards the entrance and notice no one was there. Just assumed everyone went for the rides anyway, and tried to look around for them. Could’ve sworn I saw Darius slinking around the park, like he was up to something. When I eventually confronted him, I quickly realized this wasn’t Darius, but someone else with a similar avatar (who was looking for someone). I wished them luck and headed off, then tried to track down my friends. Not many of them were online (apart from Bonnie being in the Hyena World).
Eventually made it back to Best Boi lands, I spoke to BlitzenReindeer (who was looking for Telephone). Told him what I overheard, yet didn’t realize.. Telephone was already here in her new VRChat account (as ‘Telephone Squeak’)! Ran over to see her (who was still the guy speaking).
We eventually went back to the Amusement Park. And after much more talking, started to ride the rides (with the Tea Cup ride being the first). This didn’t go well, with players falling out of the tea cups. Was quite hilarious to see them flailing around.
The next ride, would prove to be Telephone’s (and the guy’s) first time riding a ride in VR. And it was quite disorienting for them, as you could imagine.
This is also when I had to do it; I wanted to add Darius to my friends list, yet I was unsure how he would react. But I finally talked myself into it and hit the Friend button (then looked away, to ‘avoid denial’).. yet shockingly, he accepted! Nice!! Now I’m friends with Darius (the one that indirectly got me into VRChat with his videos). This is awesome.

We went back to Best Boi lands (after Telephone had enough of the rides), and spent about an hour there. Then we went to Funland. And after waiting nearly 10 minutes for everyone to load in, we went to my favorite rollercoaster in VRChat; ‘Donkey Kong Coaster’. The reason that it’s my favorite, is just how unbelievably insane it is! There’s several parts where the cars separate from eachother, and two times where the cars fall off the track (yet somehow are still following their respected path).
Next, we went on the ‘America, F**K YEAH!!” ride (the entire song is a ride, I’m not shitting you). What can I say, I love this world to bits. And the music for the rides is top notch.
Rode the bumper carts (well, I didn’t, but the others did). One of them is running over ‘Grandpa Kel’ (a guy named ‘That Kel’ who acts as everyone’s favorite grumpy grandpa) over and over! HAHA! He acts the part so well, you swear he really is an old man playing VRChat.

Next, we changed course and went to ‘Fever Dream’. I’m not sure if I talked about this world in here, but it’s pretty good at jumpscares. Basically, it’s when you discover a back entrance into Walt Disney Land (to ride the rides for free). But soon, it’s you who gets taken for a ride (by a demented Mickey Mouse).
Yet I do so love how one of them is all “guys, let’s stick together as a group”, where there was about 10 of us, to where there’s only six of us (including myself) at the end. It’s quite hard to stay as a group in that place, especially at the part where you can’t see shit.

Next, was Gold Rush. I used my typical playstyle (played as a Penguin, ran and grabbed the gold, while the other bandits attempted to keep the sheriffs away). It wasn’t long until the Sheriffs got wise of my playstyle and started going after me personally (putting me in jail mainly). Really got frustrating, yet I do congratulate them working as a team. Good game!
During our game, I told Creepery I managed to friend Telephone. He’s freaking out (in a good way), and I told him to meet up with me. But by the time the next game ends (we won as Bandits, by the way.. it was like five VS one, with the one being Trigger who was camping spawn), Creepery showed up, and Telephone left for another world. But now that I have her friended, I was able to track her down to this other world (and told Creepery to follow me).
Got in the world, Creepery took some time to load in. I was semi-fearing Telephone would jump to another server (and he would miss his chance), but thankfully he got in and I showed him to where I last heard them (which was on a crappy rollercoaster).
Soon he was able to meet Telephone, and was beside himself (which made me happy for him).
Eventually, Telephone went into Ashi’s world. I told the few people that were around me (including Creepery), that I’m not going in there. We went back to Best Boi lands instead, while I monitored Telephone’s movement through the social panel (and told Creepery the moment she switches to another world, I would let him know).
20 or so minutes later, she pops up in Avatar Testing (and tell Creepery). I quickly head there, and overhear one of them saying that he had blocked Ashi (from VRChat and Discord). Seems it was a very smart move not to go there, and I told them “that’s why I didn’t want to go there”.
The others joined about 5 or so minutes after that, and this is when Telephone had to go. Though it didn’t end there, as one of the people here started handing out invites to join a Discord server (that’s a fan club to Telephone). I joined it, as I felt I needed to.

And that’s about it (other than Oliver finally seeing my world after Telephone left, but that’s already been explained). It was quite awesome to meet her.
And who knows? Perhaps (and this is a personal assumption), if she sees just how much we appreciate the models (and her), maybe she’ll feel so appreciative of what she has done, that she’ll allow Kibble… to allow us to create our own Best Bois!
THAT, would be so awesome. It may not work like that, then again.. *shrug*.

After finally getting help, ProBuilder shows its ugly side

Trying to recreate what I did has been quite frustrating, of where I’m failing at a fucking tutorial.
See, I’m trying to do this part, where you select the top and bottom ‘faces’ after you make the second poly shape. Then you’re supposed to go to Rescale Mode and move where you want the interior to be.
I got all of this down packed now. The problem, is I cannot move both points of the top and bottom face to move together. I manage to move the top nodes, but the bottom doesn’t move with it. Doesn’t fucking make sense! It was working FINE before!

My friend still hasn’t responded to me, and I forced to ask for help in the VRChat Discord. Not getting a response to “does anyone use ProBuilder?” was frustrating me, and only added onto the issues with this ‘well known’ program.
I did eventually get a response, with one person mentioning three names that “have mentioned it”. But mentioning it (and being good at it) are two different things. Since the first two (at the time) were unavailable, I seeked out the 3rd name in the list. I expected to get a “not really” response after asking if they’re good at it, but surprisingly the person told me they’re actually building an entire world, using ProBuilder.
Thought I’d ask if they could help me get past a fucking tutorial (it feels highly degrading), and he was able to (after sharing my screen, and him trying to recreate what I’m doing). He said he was getting the same issue, but managed to find a workaround. Except.. it feels like more trouble than its worth. Basically, I have to shift drag (in a specific camera angle) to get both fucking nodes selected, in order to move both of them at the same time. Wow. This is messed up.

But it got even worse when he taught me how to make a doorway (and a window). With the plethora of steps I had to do, I have NO idea how to do it on my own (and that’s not a good feeling). It looks like a complete mess. And on top of that, he’s saying “don’t do this, don’t do that” with the program (for doing more advanced moves).
I had just fucking started using this program a few days ago… and now I’m starting to regret ever having an idea to make a world (at least, the world I want to make, when I can’t even do the god damn house).
Why? Why am I having to go through so much hell, to add something as SIMPLE AS A FUCKING WINDOW?! This is similar to the hell I went through, just to upload an avatar.
On top of it, he’s telling me that “it’s easier for me to do this than tell you”. I actually fucking wish you could, pal. Because…

Because I don’t know what I’m going to do now. I feel like giving up trying to do something that’s seems ‘impossible’ (for myself) to do. I shouldn’t have to be going through so much hell, doing basic moves. Have to learn what to select, how Extruding works, how ‘Bridge Faces’ and all of this other shit works (and when/where to use it).. why?

EDIT: After talking with Oliver about the whole Unity texture scaling thing (and himself showing me his simple way of dealing with it), I’ve decided to get rid of ProBuilder (but keep ProGrids). I also wrote a review on its page of the Asset Store, basically saying how “it’s nice, but it needs more work in the support department” — commenting the lack of a Discord server being the main problem.

.
But on a semi-unrelated up note (while watching Kibble’s stream of making the Pirate Boi possible), I discovered he built the entire world in Unity. But that’s not to say the assets he used (for the terrain and the walls of the church) can be found on the store. Pretty sure he made those in Blender, textured them in Photoshop, and used Unity to place them in.
Anyhoo, that’s pretty awesome that he’s using Unity (instead of Blender) to build the world. Maybe I can ask him (when he streams that kind of content) some world building questions now.
He actually did answer some of mine during the stream, such as how he keeps players from going beyond where he wants them to (if doing cubes is the best option). He showed me that he uses a sphere (that he makes into a dome) with the mesh render disabled. Pretty nice idea, Kibble. I might do this for my world.

Posted in Other, PC | Comments Off on After finally getting help, ProBuilder shows its ugly side

ProBuilder: a blessing? …Or a burden?

Another world-building update. I’ve been quite ‘obsessed’ of finding an alternate means of building the house I want. And as I said before, I would be asking my friend who’s been helping me learn world building in Unity.
He suggested I try out this ‘SabreCSG‘. It looks insanely powerful, and absolutely perfect for my needs (and who couldn’t turn down the price of Free?).. but it also looks as overly complicated as trying to learn Blender. Decided to ask my friend to do the learning for me (and then teach me easier than they ‘could’).
And after getting another free model (from the same guy who made the picnic table and deck chair for me), he suggested I try ‘ProBuilder‘. First off, this thing actually comes with the newest version of Unity (but the VRCSDK continues to use Version 5.6). I’ve also seen this asset before, how it looks quite simple (compared to SabreCSG). He also linked me this video, showing exactly what I wanted to do.
However, I had concerns about it. If its ‘so popular’, then how come no one’s talking about it in the #worlds section in the VRChat Discord server? Not only that, but there’s no Discord server (only a forum). The lack of quick help, isn’t good.
But I still went with it (instead of Sabre), hoping the linked tutorial will help get me started on the right foot.

Watching said video, the guy explaining stuff in it started to annoy me for not focusing on making a door on the first floor. He didn’t get to this point until he finished the “rulf”(as he called it). Then when he goes to explain what I give a fuck about, he suddenly talks fast (and quiet) as he’s explaining the key combo needed to do the action. Like: “to do a door, select the edge and hit ‘altu’ to make a cut.”
My friend (who I told him about ProBuilder) responded saying this looked interesting (and if I’ve managed to get anywhere with it).
Yesterday, he tried to help me with the door. You’re supposed to make a ‘Edge Loop’ to prepare cutting the doorway out. But the problem (besides having the ALT key set to an annoying camera pan thing), is I couldn’t actually click on the edge I needed (like he could). Yet somehow I was able to FINALLY pull off the cut (and tried my best to do it like the tutorial). But I had gotten to a point when I finally managed to get the doorway.. only for the sides of the door to be missing their ‘face’.
He came back from AFKland, and I was forced to undo what I did (thinking I did it wrong, and he might be able to help do it right). Yet now I can’t fucking recreate what I just did! He was having no trouble, yet I was. We then tried to ‘start from scratch’ (by trying it again from another spot). Unfortunately, I had to eat dinner before I could continue to follow him. He said he would “be around” for me.

But this wasn’t the case when I got back an hour later, completely unresponsive for hours. Of course this infuriated me, knowing this was the only quick way to get help with this program. It (of course) makes me hate depending on others. I didn’t even say anything wrong. All I can assume is he just had something to do (and surely he would respond later)… it’s almost bedtime, and there’s never been a response from him (yet he’s clearly not AFK).
Seems I can’t rely on him anymore, and I’m now going to have to be– wow, the irony.  “This program will make you not feel forced to learn Blender! However, you’ll still need to feel forced to learn this program!”
Meh. But maybe I can still pull it off. Since I did it (when he wasn’t looking), surely I can do it again!

But this also brings up a hell of a burning question… is it even worth learning it (for this intended purpose)? Would simply doing what I said I would do (making cubes and fitting them to a specific angle) actually be easier for me? And I wish I really had an answer. But in an attempt to help me get said answer, I asked Oliver (who has nearly finished the custom structure test he showed me a few weeks ago).
He says he has heard of ProBuilder, but felt he didn’t need it. He even showed me what I plan to do.. shouldn’t cause the problem with lag as I’m thinking. Yet I forgot to tell him, what I want to do will have a lot more parts to it (a custom staircase, a living room with a high ceiling, and of course.. multiple windows).
I also asked him what my friend told me; the issue with Unity being shit with scaling textures. He said his workaround, is literally what my friend told me (and how it would be a headache)… to make several sized textures.

As you can see, instead of getting an answer of which would be the better option, I’m left with more uncertainty. Both methods have their pros, and cons. And I have no guarantee ProBuilder would be any better with texture scaling.
I have no one else to turn to for help, but my friend. And if he’s not going to want to help me anymore… what the fuck am I going to do, then? Besides having to learn it on my own (and hope their forum would be good for quick help).
I also hope someone from the VRChat Discord server, has also used it (and used it well enough to help me where I need it).

Builder’s blues / Getting what you pay for in the Asset Store?

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve updated you folks of what I’ve been doing in my world, in VRChat.. which is the only reason why I’m still playing that game. Yet, I’d like to think of it as being ‘similar’ to Wurm (with my deed).
When I last talked to you guys, I had two “decisions” to make (after learning Ferret Lake was mainly built using Blender, and not Unity. And I ‘chose’ the first, which is to keep working on it. Yet what I did, I’m actually having my doubts if I should work on it anymore (which is causing me to get bored with working on it).

To further explain what’s going on, I added a sizable river with a covered bridge. On one end, it has two prebuilt houses placed (from the Mega Fantasy Props Pack), and on the other, is a long winding path that connects back to the original area.
The original shack has been propped up, and a custom built (by myself) porch that was made infront of it.
Now I’ve been thinking of making a fork in the road (from the bridge), which would go to a new public picnic site (that’ll be along the river). Yet one model eludes me (aka, I cannot find anything that resembles it, even of the paid assets); one of those compact, open air outdoor burger/hotdog grills that you typically see at public parks (that you put your own charcoal in).
Yet something stopped me with just doing the campsite (with what free assets I had found from the store): “Why am I doing this, when it’s just going to be me here?”… and I don’t really have an answer to that question. Except, the whole reason I did the river, was because of the single covered bridge model (that I was able to stack horizontally to make the actual bridge). Then I just started fiddling with the world afterwards, adding mountains and trees (to hide the edges of the world, as most world builders do).
And after that, is when I started feeling “I’m putting in too much, who the hell is going to see it but myself?”

So let’s talk about.. what the hell happened to my original plan. It’s still there, but I have yet to build the house. However, it not just how I feel it’s going to lag like a bitch (with every wall composed of a cube, just shaped to fit), it’s the interior of the house that’s the problem. For what I’m planning to do, I’ve built in The Sims (and in Minecraft) so many times. And those times, I wasn’t a fan of just how bare the bathroom was.
Yet even when I made it smaller (and added a dining room on the back), that dining room felt way too big for my needs. I hate having empty areas in the house (just because I don’t know what to do with them).
And there’s more than just that, but the way Unity (poorly) handles scaling of textures (IE, my attempt of a river when my world was small), it won’t look right once it’s all said and done. Perhaps, this is the reason people build their world with Blender (or Maya) — to bypass these ‘basic’ limits?
I dunno what to think of it. Perhaps I need to ask my friend, if there’s any slimmer of hope to circumvent these limits (and get my desired results).

.
Moving on, it’s time (once again) to talk about that ole bucket of ‘surprises’ (everytime it’s opened). Of course I’m talking about the Unity Asset Store. But this isn’t a rant about paying for assets, it’s more about getting more than you’re paying.
For example, I wanted to find a picnic table and a lawn chair. And the first one alone, is “only $2”. Two bucks. Cheap? Yes. Reasonably priced (based on the quality of the model)? Hell yeah. Yet… I greatly debated on it. “Dude.. it’s $2! You can’t afford that?! Come ON!” went through my mind. I felt I was being a total cheapskate.
Asked some of my friends, and most of their responses were “no, don’t get it, even if it’s cheap”, explaining that these people love to take advantage of people like myself (with very little to no experience with Blender). Then one of them actually offered to do a version of it for me, for free! Of course I can never turn down that kind of offer.

And here’s the result. Compare it to the original, and it looks pretty good. Though if I could find a much lighter wood color (such as Pine), I’d go with it instead (as it’ll look more true to real life). And I can also add some detail (such as ‘nails’ in the wood where the joints are connected). I could simply make a capsule mesh, shrink it down, slap on a stainless steel-like material (as it’s more common for nails), and use it. Or I could even go with an iron-like material (for a more rustic look).

Next was the lounge chair. This $10 one is all I could find (at the time.. I am aware there are cheaper options now). This one has two reclining settings (based on the notches on the back leg), and a choice of five different colors of the same material. Again, the quality looks superb! But I was told “$10, for one model?! What a ripoff!” by another friend of mine.
The person that made the table, did their best to make the chair (like the paid version). But he told me when he finished, that he “couldn’t figure out the cloth part”. I got the highly-untextured .fbx (with all of its parts). It looks literally like a mirrored image of the $10 one (even has the notches), but I have to texture it (like the picnic table, by simply dragging and dropping textures onto the model), and then turning it into a prefab.
Though as he was working on that model, I downloaded that crappy one from models-resource, and ‘taught’ myself how to retexture it (aka, I asked Oliver how to do it (as he used this model for his world) and he couldn’t show me as he was busy). And it’s as simple as looking for what you want to replace it with, throw it in GIMP, resize it to 32×64 (to make it fit), then paste it over what you find ugly.
This is the result. It looks so much better than the original. I also retextured the trim with white plastic (ripped from a chair model(also from models-resource)), which was done after I took that pic. So now I have two lawn chairs. 🙂

So that’s about it (for now). Oh wait.. before I wrap this up, I now know how to make a teleport door! Kattejuice showed me how he did it for his log cabin door. It takes a bit of effort, but I’ve made a prefab of it. Now all I have to do is simply fit it in the doorway.
I’m also kind of debating about adding a teleport to bypass the long walk to and from the covered bridge, which was a suggestion from Creepery (after showing him the expanded world). I personally enjoy the scenic walk (though I still need to smooth out the path in places).
I could just add some more detail, such as a small creek (coming off of the river), with a small picnic area on the side. But there I go again.. thinking I’m going to build this for other people. I NEED to focus on the house first!

Who knows.. I might make this thing public (but after I do my house idea). I don’t have an idea for a name of the world, but I’m sure my friends could help me with that (when the time comes).

Two ‘birds’ killed with one Visual C++ 2010 SP1 installation!

While I don’t promote the actual throwing of stones at birds, I do promote a figurative way of dealing with two highly annoying bugs, that have plagued me since I got into VRChat.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s the two video playing related issues I’ve been having; the ‘white screen’ on video players issue, and the Help Videos (of the tutorial world) not working.

But I finally have some fantastic news.. I FIXED THEM! 😀
Basically, I wanted to show my friend just how bad these issues were (while asking him to teach me how to set up a Video Player in my little shack). Now that he saw the problem for himself, we spent what felt like a good 1-2 hours trying to diagnose it.. but it was not looking promising for me. It was like the problem simply refused to be fixed.
However, we were able to deduce that Windows Defender Firewall isn’t the problem causing it (even going as far, as disabling the firewall).

But that was until I tried something I never had; attempting to execute the file, and then immediately getting an error of a ‘MSVCR100.dll is missing’ issue. I did a quick Google search, bypassing the “easily fix MSVCR100.dll errors by clicking here’ scam sites, and may had discovered the reason from Microsoft’s website; I’m missing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 (which includes said .dll).
Though the problem was related to something else, so I felt “this isn’t going to help me.. :P”

A bit later, my friend asks me if my version of Visual C++ is updated. After showing him pics of what I had installed (and matching it with what he has), he gives me this link, stating “there’s a newer version” than what they have.
Attempting to get every version since 2008, I was forced to use my old Microsoft account (including having to reset the password). And even with that, I also had to use Microsoft Edge just to see the fucking download links (as Firefox didn’t want to play nice).

After seeing 2010 SP1 in the list, suddenly my brain began to click… could installing this, actually fix both issues? Since my friend had all the required versions, he too tried to run the executable.. and got no errors. This is highly promising, that this could be the fix I’ve needed for a long time! So I uninstalled all the versions I had, and went straight for it. Getting it installed, I tried once again executing that file.. and got no error this time!

Went into VRChat, and then to the Karaoke world and went over to the screen. I expected to see that dreaded white screen again. Instead, I saw something different! OMFG IT’S ACTUALLY WORKING!!!

But there was another problem. Unity now no longer wants to run, due to the same error. So I thought “I’ll try installing 2017, that should fix it”. Tried, still having the same error. Then I tried installing 2015, and I was getting an error that “another version of this product is already installed”. I saw something he didn’t, that it felt likely I would be forced to install every version in order by it’s release year. He felt Microsoft wouldn’t be this dumb (and attempted to look it up).
And surprise surprise!… they are that dumb! lol.. Had to uninstall what I had (again), and did what I said (installing every version by order of year), and that worked. But it still didn’t make Unity work.
I was forced to reinstall it, and during its installation process.. it was downloading Visual C++ 2010. I… I… I wanted to scream bloody murder! I had, JUST got that thing installed! But Unity is all NAO!! I want THIS version of 2010!!!
Whatever, Unity is now working again (and all of my work is safe). The reason why I wanted it working, was so I could test to see if my own video player would work. Plus, we were both kind of worried that I may had un-fixed my fix (with all of those versions of Visual C++).

Got into my test world… and I see the white screen again. Oh no. I walked into the house….. and suddenly the video I had starts playing! The fucking thing was trolling me! WOW!
With that done (while also having some bizarre issues with my mic randomly cutting off on his end), he helped me to set up some special triggers to stop, pause, and play the videos (including going to the next (or previous) video in a queue that you need to setup).
But the mic cutting off issue was really starting to get annoying. On my end, my mic was working fine. But on his, it just randomly cuts out without warning. I tried restarting Discord, and now suddenly.. he’s too quiet. Thankfully I was able to solve that issue by finding out some of my playback settings were muted (including Discord).
But this unfortunately didn’t stop the issues with my mic, and it got to a part where we both had enough of this issue, and he called it a night. I kept working on the buttons afterwards, and managed to get some pretty good results. I also (with the help of the VRChat Discord of course) got a trigger to turn off and on the screen (so it wouldn’t play as soon as I got into my world).
The only problem with the video player in general, is it shows a white screen for nearly 10 seconds before the video pops up. My only guess is, this is probably a buffering issue. But maybe my friend (when he comes back), could help to fix it (if it can even be fixed).
Perhaps it’s perfectly normal to have a delay. Because I went to another world (that had a video player), and I saw a delay before it too popped up.

And finally, I checked the Help Videos world before heading to bed. They’re also working! Not to mention I saw just how outdated they are.
I felt confident enough to tell the devs to close my ticket, while also telling them what was causing the issue and how it was fixed. And the next day, the dev that’s been handling my ticket, felt it was “kinda obscure”. Yeah, I definitely agree. I would had never thought of doing something so simple, would be causing an issue that has been happening for over a month now!
Thank goodness it works! Now I can finally stop saying “I only see a white screen” and “I can’t hear anything” to my friends! I’ll be able to see what they see, and hear what they hear.

Being part of the Hyena world, has its advantages…

This is another world building blog post, even though I haven’t worked on it ever since I resized the world. I’m still (in a sense) sickened I’d had to expand (in order to do what I wanted to do). I feel all of the work I’ve done is ‘lost’ (even though it’s still there, apart from the small hills and the path).
However, being part of the ‘Land of Cackles’ Discord server, I’ve noticed that the world owner ‘Kattejuice’ (going under the alias of ‘*Assorted Ferret Noises*’) of ‘Ferret Lake’, is also in this server! This opens one hell of a window of opportunity, to get my burning questions answered (such as how he got the terrain so buttery smooth) to the world owner who indirectly inspired me to make my own world! 😀
(I use the word ‘indirectly’ a lot when it comes to VRChat, don’t I?)

I have asked them four questions. Was going to be five, but I feel that question could be better answered either through the VRChat Discord server, or through a YouTube tutorial. And after waiting three hours, I got the answers I want. However, they weren’t the answers I desired.
The entire world, was made in Blender.. not Unity. FUCK!! ….Wow. He said even the lawn chairs were made (by him).

So now what?! There’s only two answers to that question. 1: I learn how to set the terrain by hand in Unity. 2: I continue to do nothing about it.
I’ll eventually go with the first ‘option’. It just sucks, when people use an advanced way of world-making. Though I feel with time (and help from my friend of balancing the map size with how detailed the sloping should be), I might be able to pull off the desired result in Unity.

Status of changes to my world (and what I’ve learned about Unity)

As promised (again), here has been everything that’s been going on with my little (now not so ‘little’) test world. First and foremost, as I said I got the throwable chair fixed. The Mesh Render absolutely has to be there for the VRCChair trigger to work properly. Thankfully it can be hidden by simply clicking it off (to disable the render, but not the mesh).
There was also a problem, where the top of the chair was going through objects (and the ground). This was an easy fix (including a bug when throwing the chair, its physics break (just before it completely lands on the ground) and you see it hovering).
And finally, I added a tree pack, which adds birch, oak, and pine trees (even some rocks and flowers). These trees actually animate on their own! It’s so cool, and it doesn’t lag my game. It’s a win-win.

All there’s left for me to figure out, is A: How to do a custom house (without using many .fbx prefabs), and B: How to make a nice realistic slope that will go down to a large river.

We attempted to tackle the second one. I couldn’t really figure it out, as you can’t flatten terrain that’s already flat with the world. But there’s actually a setting in the terrain tools to raise the entire world (not through Transform, but through the Paint Height tool). And there I got an additional lesson on the ‘Create Empty’ feature of Unity. It can be used to set up groups (and subgroups). One such use is putting all groups into one main group, which can be used set the height and relocate every object in the scene to any place I want. Quite neat (and it keeps my Hierarchy neat too).

Back to the terrain, the person was able to figure out that using either the ‘Raise / Lower Terrain’ or ‘Paint Height’ tools, one can finally dig into the ground! That’s Step 1. Step 2 is making the cliff look like a smooth as butter angle. This would prove to be quite… quite frustrating. My friend was able to pull it off, but I was on the verge of wanting to delete my world in rage. I had even downloaded and installed new brushes, in hopes I would get a more uniform look of what I’m going for.. but it was like Unity was deliberately laughing at my attempts.
At the time, I was too furious to understand what was being told to me (apart from having to expand the world). I didn’t want to do that.. not yet. I feel I haven’t learned everything, that I’m not ready for this next step!
“Why can’t Unity’s Terrain Tools be like The Sims 3’s?!” I yelled, and the person agreed with me. But eventually I thought “fuck it.. FINE! I’ll make the damn thing bigger!” and did. And then I finally realized what was being told to me (after seeing the path I made from the spawn to the house, being 10x bigger). And that’s not all, even the brushes were MUCH bigger.
As ‘unfair’ as this feels…. this is the way Unity’s poly system (and terrain tools) work. The current world’s terrain, didn’t have enough polys to make what I wanted to do, detailed enough. Enlarging it was the only way for the tools to ‘grab more’ of the polys, for more realism.
