BSoD’s galore; has Mr “LOL LOCKUP!!” made a comeback?

It’s been awhile since I posted news of the health and well-being of my computer. It’s just, because this news is quite ugly, and I have no idea what the fuck is going on or why it’s happening.
My computer, for the most part usually only had issues during boot into Windows, by freezing up on a blue screen (or even the “welcome” screen). The only fix to this is either restart and hope it’s just a fluke, or restore Windows in Safe Mode to a previous instance. I have to tell my computer to “please boot normally”, and usually it does.

A BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) is more serious, particularly the one I’m getting. It’s a “MEMORY_MANAGEMENT” one. This BSoD is popping up more and more, and it’s scaring me half to death. Because I looked it up, and it states you could have a serious flaw with your RAM. As in, one of the sticks could be dying. The problem is, I can’t afford to upgrade my computer anytime soon, or have it dying on me. As you can see, this is coming at a really bad time.

Seeing how my computer hasn’t been dusted out in months, I had it done. And so far…*knocks on wood* the BSoD hasn’t popped up. I’m still on edge and scared to do anything. What’s ironic is my brain also wants to buy and play Borderlands 2. And I’m trying to tell it that I don’t know if my computer is even stable enough for basic tasks, such as surfing the web, or even typing this blog post, let alone a resource-demanding game like Borderlands 2.

I’ve also had a few issues with programs randomly crashing for no reason; Firefox in particular has been malfunctioning. I just hope whatever the hell happened, balances itself out overtime. It seriously has to. I can’t afford it!

Myst Online: Uru Live… and why it’s free

Before I start this rather depressing post, I’m sure all of you have been wondering why I haven’t said anything since completing Dead Space 3.
Well I’ve been busy in Minecraft, playing legitimately in Single Player (taking a break from the MRT, since I’ve done all major road-related projects). I’m also on a new legit server with a few friends from the MRT Server; nighthawk998(NexZone30), chiefbozx(Chief), and BossOfGames(Boss) and his brother, Roflcopter.

But anyway, I’m starting to feel that I’m not really…needed in that server. Nex and Boss seem to handle things without me. And as for me, who would want someone that’s scared of anything that makes a sound? Yes, they’re not playing in Peaceful mode. And the “I don’t want to die” fear keeps going through my veins everytime I’m ordered to strip mine, or chop down trees on the mainland.
I even made myself a full set of iron armor, and I still don’t feel safe from the sound of Creepers.

Moving on (and the reason of this post), angry got me into an online game I think I heard hearing about before; Myst Online: Uru Live. I’ve been a fan of the Myst series eversince I saw my father play it, years ago. I believe I’ve played up to Myst 3, but I forgot most of it.
Anyway, this one is a game that was scheduled for development after Riven, but canceled and restarted many times until 2003.
So let’s talk about the three things I feel that make a game, a good one. Unfortunately, this isn’t. But one day it might be.

The good;
– Your own Age, called “Rolto”. There are many like it, but this one is yours. It’s a small island with a hut. In the hut it has books that you’ve found. Most are your instance of that Age. Your Rolto can be ‘upgraded’ (prettied up) by finding special pages that have a green symbol. These can be toggled anytime you wish.
– A Singleplayer Campaign. Shocking, since this is supposedly a Multiplayer game. The voices are really good. You got to find these “Journey Cloths” in these four Ages; 7 in each Age (some in multiple Ages) and help out a person named “Yeesha”, who’s said to be in Myst 3, 4, and 5.
– You have the option to co-op with a friend (or friends) to help you with the Singleplayer Campaign, or any other Age that is sharable of your or their Rolto.
– Like all Myst games, the puzzles make you want to pull your hair out thinking of the solution, which is always the fun part. And then facepalm and have a red embarrassed face when your friend shows you the answer that was hiding right under your nose. It’s still important to read everything that’s readable, as it might have a clue to solving a puzzle farther on. They’re not just going to tell you the answer; you have to think. Sometimes that pisses me off.
– It’s a free download, and free to play. It’s sustained by donations. But there’s a trick to this. Like Myst of not trusting what you see actually working the way it’s supposed to, free downloads aren’t always good things. Reasons below.

The bad;
– The SP Campaign is short. The rest of the game is repetitive, pointless tasks that are only for bragging rights, or having fun with friends. I rather have fun solving complex puzzles.
– Hard to get any help through Google or Youtube to solve a puzzle by myself. Since this game is pretty much a ‘port’ from the Singleplayer version; Uru – Ages Beyond Myst (technically it could be seen as “Myst 6”), all walkthroughs are for the Singleplayer version, instead of the Multiplayer version.

The ugly;
– Constant crashing/freezing/disconnecting/ridiculously long load times. Bad all around.
– Though it isn’t game-related, angry’s attitude is also in the ‘ugly’ category, and it ruins my fun for the game. His unnecessary “uhu” answer, when I’m trying to figure out a puzzle and see if I’m right or not.

The conclusion in my honest opinion? Myst Online: Uru Live feels like a bad port of the Singleplayer game. Myst is an awesome Singleplayer series, and should had stayed as such. The only thing I truly liked about the Multiplayer version, was the fact you can co-op on puzzles. But when that stopped, the game stopped being fun.
Others would disagree with me, but that’s their right and opinion. This is mine. But I’ve been told that the game is “unfinished”, and is still being worked on. Heard new Ages will pop up, and more exploring would be done of them. Once (and if) that happens, I will come back. But only for that; for new content that has a purpose and moves the story along.

Dead Space 3 completed, thoughts

Despite the save issues, I managed to defeat the really difficult final boss (a lot better than Dead Space 2’s anti-climatic “boss” fight) and beat the game, and possibly the end of the series… or is it? Though I don’t feel a Dead Space 4 coming, because the Necromorth threat has been defeated, and the human race is finally saved. Likely there would be a DLC or two for co-op, knowing EA. This will be explained in the Spoilers section.

Was it worth the $60, in my honest opinion? No. More like $50. First time I said that to a Dead Space game. This was mainly because of the flawed save/load system, and the “bad ending”, that I’ll discuss in the Spoilers section.
However, it could had been worse. I could had been one of the unfortunate to have their game reset/crash during the Prologue, and having an unplayable game.
Not having a life, actually helped me complete it.

Overall, the game was… different, than the previous two games. The first two, had you trying to survive and just find a way to get the hell off of that ship. This one, gave you the option of leaving, but you knew that if you turned your back on humanity, you wouldn’t have a planet to come home to, and this was your chance to finally stop the horror; to stop the markers at its source.

My favorite part of the game, and I’m sure others would agree, flying around in Outer Space above the planet (Zero-G is fun). It wasn’t as “free” as I hoped it would be. You’re still forced to use the Skip to go between ships. I was hoping to just fly to ships just by using my suit’s thrusters.

So anyway, to talk more about what I thought of the game, will reveal spoilers. So if you’re one of the many that hate being spoiled, don’t click the “Read More >>” button. That is your fair warning. Continue reading

Rules of thumb before buying a pricy game…

1. Always check forums for the issues of said game before buying it!
2. If it came out in the same month you heard about it, wait until the price goes down (especially if it’s $60).
3. If the graphics look amazing, it’s too good to be true.
4. Watch out for “fishy deals” of getting all of this bundled into it.
5. If it’s a game made by EA… for the love of god, WAIT until the price drops!!

Dead Space 3, buggy? Yep. Why? … I wish I knew. It’s got some serious flaws behind that shiny coat of paint. The most serious one, a save game feature that’s even worse than FarCry 3. They threw out the Save Stations for Waypoint Saving. You can also save on the fly.

Well, that’s really good and dandy, but this means nothing when it DOESN’T FUCKING WORK!!! The waypoint save system is very.. trollish. And saving manually is pointless.
For example, I get done clearing out from my first Sub-Mission, and head to Chapter 5. So I gotta go at that time. And I save and quit, even when a waypoint save, hits.

The next day, I attempt to load the save, and it boots me back to the Main Menu for no reason. Attempting to load my Waypoint from the “Continue Saved Game” feature, puts me right back before I even started the Sub-Mission… so all of that work was pointless.

I think I’d like my $60 back, for a broken game, please. And waiting for a patch… probably going to be March or past that, ’till it shows up.

Dead Space 3 -VS- Getting better hardware for my computer

Another long delay between postings. Sorry. I’ve been playing on and off of the MRT Server. Also been playing Survival again, using Sim-U-Kraft. It’s a really neat mod.

So anyway, this post is about Dead Space 3, and why I must have it! I’ve been a fan of the Single Player series since the first one. How it gave me such fright, but not enough to give me nightmares or keep me from sleeping.
I actually never heard of Dead Space 3 until a friend on our Mumble server mentioned about it. I actually didn’t believe it, feeling the end of Dead Space 2 was a good enough ending to end the series. But it was only a cliffhanger, of saying there’s more markers.
The plot is basically, to find the source of the markers and stop it to save mankind. Sounds a lot like Mass Effect 3 with the Reapers. That is if you think of the Markers, being the Reapers. They can’t kill anyone on their own, though. So they turn humans and anything else, into the horrors that are the Necromorths.

Dead Space 3 also doesn’t play in 1 to 2 specific areas. Going by playthrough videos I’ve seen, you have the option of flying freely through outer space in a ship graveyard, above an unknown frozen planet. There’s also side-missions. A total of 10 from what I’ve heard. You can board ships of this graveyard, which lets you fight in different areas. They all come with their challenges (and Necromorths).
But the ability to fly around freely in Outer Space, made me want this game and want it badly.

There’s also changes. Stores no longer exist; Benches replace them. Also, you’re now down to two weapon slots instead of four. However, the cool thing with this, is you can combine weapons! You can have a Shotgun and an Assault Rifle, combined into one hell of a gun. An “Assault ShotRifle”. Both guns can be fired separately, having their own ammo counts. But be careful when reloading. When you reload, all the ammo you had is gone. This is to make the game more tense (and it’s realistic when you’re talking about reloading during combat).

There’s also a new Crafting system that you can make brand new weapons to make Necromorths fear you for a change. Combine a Tesla Canister and a Gun Frame, and you have a charged, powerful weapon.

.
But as awesome as Dead Space 3 is, I also know I need a new computer. This thing is giving me an attitude, and having to tell it to “please boot normally” everytime I turn it on in the morning, is getting annoying. What’s most annoying is trying to have two instances of Minecraft, to hand-copy blocks from one to the other. Over time, turning lag becomes a serious problem. And then there’s where I have to shut down both instances, and it takes nearly five minutes to unload from memory.

Plus, technology is passing my computer by. There’s already an 8-core CPU, which would blow my Phenom away. But I’m not in need of a brand new computer, when I can just upgrade the hardware of my current one.

I need the following of a “new computer”;
– Larger primary hard drive. At least a 1TB.
– A new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
– A better motherboard that can handle 8GB of RAM or even more than that.
– 8GB of RAM.
– A better GPU. Nothing’s wrong with my current one, though. But I should upgrade.
– A better CPU to go with the motherboard. I’ve being told to get an i7 or something.

And that’s pretty much it. I’m hoping the price range will be around $400-$500. Dead Space 3 is on Origin (only place to really get it) for $60. It’s worth the price for the amazing visual effects I’ve seen, and the plot/writing/voice acting is really good.

So to end this blog post, I finally made a decision. I went over several key figures in deciding: price/features/computer reliability/available money in bank/and the fact I’ve got to go to the Dentist tomorrow, I’ve decided I’m going to….

Get Dead Space 3! Even though it’s $60, it comes with all of the AddOn Packs. And it was only available until tomorrow.
I’m sorry, computer. But I’m going to play you until I can’t play you any longer. Eventually, I will have the money for a new computer and all of the things I mentioned. But why should I be bored to tears?
Though I might regret this decision in the future. I really, really hope I won’t.

“Have a good one!” -JeetTol leaves Minecraft

JeetTol, the guy that did all of those awesome Railcraft tutorials, and also got me to play legit for the first time in quite a few years, has decided it’s time to stop making Minecraft videos.
He says in his closing statement, the very words that have made many people stop playing: that real life is catching up to him and he has to stop.
He states that, he isn’t doing as many videos as he once was (like his 1.2.5 Modded Minecraft series).

It’s sad to see such a popular guy go, but you also have to respect him. He commutes eight hours to and from work. 4 hours to get there, and 4 to get back. That is impressive, and.. I wonder how much money he spends to keep his car tuned up for such an endeavor.

But anyway, he’s not done of making videos completely. He may still do something else, but not Minecraft-related.
He will be missed, but not forgotten.

FarCry 3, completed. Thoughts

FarCry 3: “I fucking HATE Crocodiles!”

First off, first blog post of 2013! Woot!

Like most “hybrid” games, a certain game has two or three things that remind the player of them. FarCry 3 is no exception, except it has four games, having some Crysis, Just Cause 2, Skyrim, and a pinch of Mirror’s Edge in it. Crysis for the FPS and being on an island (actually, multiple islands) and the enemy tracking camera. Just Cause 2 for the handgliding the player can do, Skyrim for the Crafting and XP, and Mirror’s Edge for staying in FPS of the player jumping around like he’s Faith.

Some say that Far Cry 3 is “Skyrim with guns”. I actually have to agree with this. The crafting side of FC3 is almost similar to Skyrim. And as for dragons, there’s only one type of dragon threat, which is the Komodo Dragon; a real life creature (doesn’t breath fire, but is deadly with its saliva).
But the graphics in FC3 on Ultra graphics, really pop out at you.

So anyway, I haven’t been really thinking about buying this game. The MRT Server and WoW had my interest at the time. But both have gotten boring again. Also, seeing it was on sale via the New Years sale. I got the Deluxe version which has some added goodies, and it was still below the normal price ($50).
And even with my ‘once beefy now a relic compared to todays games’ computer, the FPS is very smooth and realistic on Medium/Low graphics. There’s a few ground shadow glitches I see when on roads, but that’s the only thing.

So you’re this teenager named Jason Brody, who’s with his friends to celebrate one of your friends getting their pilot’s license. All of you have gone on vacation to an island complex near Asia, “Rook Island”. The fun comes crashing down on their and your heads when you’re captured by a powerful, deranged warlord named Vass. Turns out most of the people on this island, are high and trying to get even higher.

Eventually you manage to escape the stronghold, and get rescued by another guy who tells you about this faction called the “Rakyat” which are the true owners of the island, and about your new tatau (tattoo actually). This is no ordinary tattoo. He explains this tattoo is the mark of the Warrior. This thing is pretty much your skill points over your enemies. You get more tattoos when you skill up, and you can actually see them on your arm ingame.

Before I go over what I think about the game so far, I’m going to talk about one thing that really irritated me and still does when I launch the game.
When I launch it through Steam, I expect to play it through Steam. Instead, it’s launched through an entirely different service, called “Uplay”. A service similar to Origin for EA games. I have to login through this service, to play a game I didn’t buy through it. Feel free to explain the level of bullshit this is, because I can’t think of it.

On top of it, this retarded thing will not let me redeem the extras I paid for without fucking playing the game. It has these “units” you have to use to unlock the stuff you paid for.

Passing this crap, time to finally explain what I think about it. I like it. They got rid of one idiotic thing in FarCry 2, which was the Malaria attacks, so no more pauses in killing something to pop pills in your mouth. Gun jamming, is gone too. Yay for that. Also, proper sneaking! You don’t stick out like a sore thumb.
The currency is USD, instead of Diamonds. Radio towers have a purpose. They show the map, and give you free guns. And the last good change, taking down an Enemy Stronghold, really means no more enemy respawns in that sector of the map! You also get bonuses for doing it with Stealth, and not having any enemy trigger an alarm.
And just shooting your bullets in the air like you just don’t care, no longer alerts enemies from a nearby enemy area to your location (unless you’re really near it). That was annoying.
And when it comes to taken over enemy strongholds, they have a Fast Travel feature. Similar to the busses in FarCry 2.
The map is fully accessible, even areas that are covered up by a mist. No more fading and appearing back away from it.

And now, to talk about where they messed up (I’m such a nitpicker);
— The Map is its own page instead of being able to pull up while walking around.
— In FarCry 2, your purchased guns were on shelves so you can easily see which one you want and swap them, in a Safehouse. In FarCry 3, this is done through the Stores in safehouses. Very inconvenient.
— The ‘cutscenes’ of interacting with people. Why is this needed? This reminds me of Mirror’s Edge more than anything. You’re still in First Person here, so I just don’t get their logic.
— No sleeping. Period. Why did they get rid of this feature? I hate fighting at night.
— No “favorite gun storage” in safe houses. Again, a nice feature in FarCry 2 removed.
— No Quick Load feature, incase your “Stealth Mission” ends up going bad by failing to silence a guard. You have to rely on checkpoints.
— Saving your game is pointless. When you save, quit, and go back in, you’ll appear inside the safe house of the last enemy stronghold you took over. Again, checkpoints.
— Vehicles cannot be purchased like they could in FarCry 2.
— Due to no sleeping, there’s no realtime. The sun even sets in the Northeast. That’s fucked up.

Why does it seems most video game companies think backwards when they make a sequel to their series, getting rid of nice features for crappy ones? You’d think they would want to ADD ONTO IT, not make the next game worse than the last!
I’m not saying FarCry 3 is worse than 2. But if it had the same useful features as 2 did, it would be even better.

So, that’s my opinion on FarCry 3. It’s still a must own, even for the $50 they ask for it. And I hadn’t even scratched the surface. There’s so much more to this game as you progress in the Single Player campaign.
And yes, there IS freeplay after completing the campaign, unlike in FarCry 2.

WoW Patch 5.1.0: “Landfall”

Being away from WoW and playing on the MRT Server, does have some benefits. One of them is not knowing what Blizzard’s been cooking up for WoW. because usually it’s news for Raiders or PvPers.

But I got curious on the day after Christmas, and decided to see what was going on. And it seems they’re caring for soloers like myself.
It was the 5.1.0 patch, titled “Landfall”. The patch that has Hellscream trying to take over Pandaria for the Horde, and the Alliance is trying to stop him. It seems anyone can do the quest chain by flying to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and you get a quest to meet a scout. I’m not going to do it yet, because obviously there’s PvPing related in it.

There are other changes too, of course. Some better for me. And others make me scratch my head because I’m not seeing it.
The first notable change, is more gear choices for me! It’s now highly recommended you do dailies for Valor, which I can use to get even better gear than I have currently.
The second notable change, both PvP (Honor/Conquest), and PvE (Valor/Justice) gear vendors are marked on the map in Pandaria, with the PvP vendors on The Serpent’s Spine near the Dread Wastes, and the PvE vendors near the Ox Temple in Townlong Steps.

The third notable change, is the new Brawler’s Guild requesting all solo PvErs like myself to Stormwind, to do battle against the fiercest mobs in Azeroth. Once I get geared enough, bring it ON! 😀 Unfortunately, you have to be invited into this guild. And they’re out of invites. So you must find a way to obtain an invite to start setting your fights up.
The forth notable change, is the ‘Lesser Charms of Good Fortune’, acquired by doing dailies (worthless to me since they’re used as trinkets for Raiding), now a currency instead of filling up my bags. Thanks, Blizzard. You did a good thing.

The fifth and sixth change, are related to Hunters. Aspect of the Fox, a Cataclysm-added Aspect, has been removed. Instead, Steady Shot, Cobra Shot, and Barrage, can be used while moving! This is GREAT news for me! This will make soloing in The Nexus against the final boss (especially in Heroic) a lot easier.

And the final notable change which is both confusing and irritating at the same time, as I was updating my WoW client I noticed a piece of news, that Blizzard, “standardized” all servers to be in the same time zone. With US servers being in Pacific, and Oceania servers being in Australian Eastern.
My server, Alexstrasza, is still in Central, as it has been since its launch years ago. So I don’t know what’s up with that.
The reason for the change, when zoning, you can see the timezones of other servers due to the idiotic cross-server zoning thing they added in the last patch. This lead to lag while flying (especially max speed). Though they did fix the time zones from changing on you, the lag is actually even worse than before. It takes 5-7 seconds of being ‘locked up’ when zoning.

One funny note. Theramore still stands on the World Map. I had thought Blizzard would “live up to their promises” and you’d see a flattened Theramore, like they showed in pictures. Instead, as I said before, it seems phased like Wrymrest Temple.
Not that I’m complaining, it’s just unlike Blizzard. They told us, we WILL see it leveled on the World Map! Yet it’s NOT. Either they lied, or they got a bunch of Alliance hate mail (and maybe even death threats) to leave it alone.
Another theory, you got to do the Scenario (the phased version) to “unlock” the leveled version of Theramore.

Dungeon Keeper 2 – Being evil is actually fun

So angry’s trying to get me into Dungeon Keeper 2, an old but supposibly popular game. Everyone knows (except I) of what you do. Angry claims it’s “like The Sims”. I don’t really see a resemblance.
So you’re an evil dungeon keeper, and your task is to build rooms for your minions, and train them for battle against invaders. It sounds simple, but it’s not. It has a steep learning curve that I still haven’t gotten over. In the Single Player campaign, you must work up your forces and do battle with the boss, and take his ‘portal gem’.

Your currency is gold. You can get this from making your Imps mine in specified areas that you mark out. You need gold to afford specific themed rooms, like a Lair for your creatures to sleep, a Hatchery for food, and a Training Room to increase their skill levels.
Each room has its own breed of creature that summons it. However, to get more than just Imps, you must link your dungeon to a Portal, and have them claim it as your own. This will cause fire-breathing Salamanders to show up when you have a Training Room, or Warlocks when you have a Library.

So you’re having to do a balancing act between building rooms and getting more gold to do so. This is harder in the later levels, as the game assumes you know what you’re doing.
However, you’re not alone. A disembodied voice called “The Mentor” is your evil (as evil as you are! Muhahahaha!!) dungeon adviser. He tells you if your minions are unhappy, if a room is too small for them, and when it’s “payday” for your creatures. He also informs you if your dungeon is breached by invaders.

There’s three issues I’ve seen with this game. The first one, it’s “stuck” in Fullscreen mode. There is a way to set it to Windowed via the registry, but this doesn’t work in Windows 7.
The second thing, the cheat mode doesn’t seem to work. Though the cheats don’t really do much (nothing in the lines of keeping your creatures happy, or spawning creatures that you want). So it’s not really important.

So I mentioned there’s a Single Player campaign earlier. There’s also a “Pet Dungeon”, which is half Sandbox, half Scenario. When you start one of the several tiered levels, within 10-20 minutes, the game has unlocked all rooms for you. But you must still make sure your minions are happy and ready. The sandbox side is being able to summon heroes to invade your dungeon, or don’t at all.
But be careful. Every time you summon, their skill levels go up one point. And if your minions aren’t ready at the same skill level as they are, find your dungeon heart in trouble.

But anyway, the Pet Dungeon is the best way to learn how to play. So, that’s my opinion on Dungeon Keeper 2. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but it’s fun. Especially when you see a ton of gold ore just waiting to be mined out by your imps.

And I found something cool. In the original Dungeon Keeper, you get to have dragons. But to me, they look like Creepers from Minecraft. They have no arms, just legs. They have wings, of course.
