Dan shows off Just Cause 3, hype train rolls in… I walk away

Part of Dan’s “The Square Enix Job” short series, the devs allowed him to show off never before seen Alpha footage of Just Cause 3 (and him playing it). And he… he was like a kid in a candy store. And it was a very large store.
Since then, the video has been shared pretty much everywhere in social media. Though I doubt local news would care to talk about it.

I will admit, I like what I saw. It seemed to keep the pointless yet also hilarious ways to cause chaos, with additional things for Rico. Such as infinite grenades, a mega multi rocket launcher.. new real world physics, able to not only grapple someone, but reel them in or just slingshot someone halfway across the map.
Also, Rico has a wingsuit, and he can also act like Spiderman (hanging upside down).
Why? … Just cause!

As awesome as everything looked… I’m not giving into hype. I..I can’t. Not after what Blizzard did to me. They ruined my overall confidence with game developers. And even when the game gets released, I won’t care to get it. I’ll be too skeptical to try it out. I guess I don’t believe in Steam’s refund policy. Feel they’ll find a way where I’ll be stuck with it.

TES Online: Tamriel Unlimited – The other MMORPG

I’m now the proud (yet shocked) owner of a much… MUCH cheaper copy of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited! Green Man Gaming has done it again for me! First, having GTA V at a discounted price. Now… this game for $15 instead of $60 (75% OFF!!) Holy fuck, what a savings!! 😀

Right, and here I’m debating about getting Wildstar and I get this instead. Well, I was going over my email, and saw two things from Wildstar Support of wanting my opinion on how well or bad I was treated by their tech support. Huh.. Blizzard never did that. They couldn’t take the time to ask for my opinion.
Anyway, a week ago I got an email about Green Man Gaming’s Summer Sale. Started off as selling Early Access games. Wasn’t interested. Though they did have this flash sale, and I wanted to see if Far Cry 4 was available. Well, it wasn’t. It got sold out. That’s strange, and also good news to me (that people like the game).. lol, I’m talking as if I was Ubisoft here and loving the fact people like my game.

Getting to the fucking point here! Yesterday was their final 24 hour Encore sale, I was checking out the email, scrolled to the bottom and saw “75% off – Elder Scrolls Online”. After watching The Lazy Peon’s video(a few days ago) for this as well (and also really liking what I was seeing), I was really, really debating of between this and Wildstar. But since I was talking Wildstar, I went with that. Mainly because the game is $60 normally… and there is was for $15. I’m all “Oh wow, only $15?! Where’s my wallet!?”
I really can’t believe it. Mainly due to the price, and how I seriously lucked out of the 24 hour thing. Email got sent yesterday. Somehow I was able to get it before the 24 hours were up. Very happy. Felt really rare seeing it that cheap. Hope Far Cry 4 follows suit and stops being only 40% off when on Steam.

So yeah. I now own the game. Don’t have it installed yet, I just have a key to get it. No monthly fees to worry about this time, as they’ve went FTP back in March of this year (after my WoW subscriptions expired).
I’m going to make an account and check it out in the afternoon. Hopefully it doesn’t have the same BS as Wildstar’s forced security feature. Plus, being a big, big fan of Skyrim, this is my jam. I can’t wait to make an Argorian and see The Black Marsh (if it actually starts there). Then head up to Skyrim and say hi to Paarthanux (my favorite dragon). 🙂
What really made me want this, they have fucking First Person JUST like Skyrim and Oblivion!! You can see your sword and shit. 😀 LOVE that!
Oh god, if they too have player housing (with full customization), I’m going to need an extra pair of pants. Because this will be the best $15 investment ever.

I do know they have mounts, and you get one a LOT quicker than Level 15.

Wildstar (Free Trial), Day 2 (it’s not good)

Day 2. A lot has happened;

-I found the Exile Capital City of ‘Thayd’. It’s pretty big, but it’s about the size of Stormwind. You have to be at least Level 14 to access it.
-I’m now Level 14, and have a Player Housing plot. Found out beds have no interaction.
-There was this quest, where it involved me killing Superior-ranked mobs. I died, multiple times. Why is THIS A FUCKING THING??!?!
-I managed to find myself a new mount that you can get at Level 3 (only acquirable at the capital city). It’s a hoverboard.
-Learned the other restrictions of the Free Trial. Level 20 is the cap, just like WoW. Also, I cannot access the AH due to it. And I also cannot respond to /whisper (but I believe WoW was like that back then as well).

And that’s not all I’ve learned. The last things… are a game changer. A “I made a mistake” game changer. So that quest I mentioned, and found the city. I felt so. fucking. PATHETIC asking for help using /say. I felt like a 12 year old that can’t afford $20 because I need my parents’ allowance (and their permission). I just.. ugh. Why? I don’t want to go back to those dark days of starting WoW in 2005 again.

And finally, and I do mean finally got help from a bunch of nice people who partied with me. We went to the area, I tagged the mob. Killed it.. and it was the only one I needed. I was 66% completed with the quest. Apparently I had to only kill one more.
Anyway, as they were preparing to leave, I asked them is the game worth paying for before going FTP (and getting my money’s worth). They said yes… however, they asked me “do you raid?”, and I said no. And they said “well then no”, and how the game is mainly focused on raiding.

Mainly. focused. … on raiding. FUCK! Then they asked me if I’m new to MMO’s, and I said no (how I played WoW and Guild Wars 2, and wanted something more fun and less BS). They told me how the dungeons in Guild Wars 2 are child’s play compared to the dungeons in Wildstar. One said how they have played Guild Wars 2 for three years, and was blown away by the dungeon difficulty in Wildstar. Another one mentioned to be able to “solo dungeons” of Guild Wars 2. I questioned, saying “but they scale your level down”.
Was told the one the final boss is in (and also this “RC” one) can be soloed “as long as you’re good”… they don’t know my main, then.

This is upsetting. This game, even with its flaws and bad choice of font, was my new MMO. This is the only MMO that still has questing, and it almost plays like WoW. It has FPs and everything. Yet now I’m hearing… I’m hearing differently of what The Lazy Peon said of his video. I… I dunno anymore. I feel like I should have something returned that cannot be refunded, which is my time playing this game and the memories.

Surely… SURELY raiding can’t be the main reason to get to 50! What about the player housing and all the customization? What about the mounts? Raiding can’t be it!
I need a second opinion. Though I feel the answer will be “just play the game the way you wish! No one’s forcing you to raid.”, instead of their opinion of endgame content.
Don’t fucking sugarcoat it to make it taste better. Just… tell me. If it is raiding being the best thing to do, then…. then…. well, my birth month’s coming up next month, and I plan to buy Far Cry 4 for my birthday. So that should keep me entertained. And it’s Single Player.

EDIT: So my second opinion on the forums was answered. It was what I thought, except worded differently. They told me how the game isn’t JUST about raiding once you get to Level 50, it’s whatever I want.
Plus they add how they recommend that I join a Guild and yadda yadda yadda… and you know what? This time I’m thinking I just might do so. After that one quest, it’s likely I’m going to run into another one in the future. That’s why I’m probably going to need one, mainly to learn everything I can about the game (since I don’t have mfish to help me). As long as they don’t really get in my way of soloing, I’ll be happy. Plus I can leave at anytime. I hope to never need to if I find a good Guild, but the option is there.
I guess I’m really trying to change my attitude about always having to solo. Try to be more social. It’s not like it’s going to kill me IRL. 😛

Still going to think about this.

Killzone Shadow Fall NOT (ever to be) completed, thoughts

I’ve… let’s say I haven’t really enjoyed the game so far. And now I’ve hit possibly the 2nd most nerve-wracking moment in my console history.
I was going to make this as another “Bad” in my review, but this one deserves its own post.

The final level (The Handler), there’s this really large room where I knew there was going to be a firefight to match its size. And I was right. You may have the high road here, but when you got enemies with pinpoint aiming shooting at you (and very limited cover), it’s very hard to defend.
You’re given three teammates, but their “skill” at shooting is as good as mine.. aka, horrible. Plus they stay high up, where they are exposed 180* of gunfire. Yeah, they die quickly. Plus they never think of using cover. Brilliant.
Plus, you have to do this for 5 minutes. Five real life minutes, while waiting for this gun turret to very, very slowly move over the very room you’re shooting at.
What limited cover you have, eventually gets compromised by enemies flanking you from all directions.

If you manage to survive (with me nearly throwing the controller down due to dying my… 56th time), you go up and get exposed to gunfire, while making a mad dash for the gun turret.
And this… this is worse. Everyone is shooting at you. And up here, you cannot defend yourself. You cannot move (or even hop out to get to cover). All you can do is attack. Was told that all you have to do is take out the turrets on the floor ahead of you, and the three gunships. But by the time I do it, my screen is flashing (and glowing) blood red and I die. And this happens everytime.
No matter what I do, or who I kill… the same thing keeps happening. Sustain enough damage, you die. You die. You die.. you die. And on top of this, I see a dropship coming in to make things even harder.

You know what’s the really hilarious part of all of this? Huh? … This is in Easy difficulty. I should NOT BE FUCKING HAVING THIS MUCH GRIEF… ON EASY MODE!!!!!!
Enemies should NOT be able to fucking hit me with pinpoint accuracy without a scope! They’re aimbotting!

This…. this game. Why.. does it have to be so frustrating? Why? I don’t seem to be alone here. Lots of others have wanted to throw their consoles out the window due to this part. You don’t need to have wave after wave of enemies to have gameplay. Spice it up! Throw in a fucking boss battle!

.
There’s also another thing about this game that really annoys me. And of course I’m talking about the plot. It isn’t the whole aliens now living on this planet thing, but about this guy you’re supposed to kill. He finds a way to get into your personnel file and gives you a story of what the aliens went through.
He claims, these humans caused this mess. And he’s right. Yet not having played the previous Killzone games, as I said before I don’t know who shot the first bullet.
As it goes on, it begins to feel that you’re the “bad guy”. Yet, you’re really nothing but a pawn who blindly follows orders without question. You’re also the only one that can supposeably end this war.
I don’t know who to believe. And I wish the line was drawn more clear of who really is “good” and “evil”.

.
The game should had been sold as a tech demo for the PS4, and nothing more. The gameplay, I’ll admit there’s a TINY bit of coolness in some of the levels (like when the ship is heading towards the sun, and you see metal melting right infront of you due to the extreme heat. You can shoot the windows out to cook your enemies. I actually do like that.
But other than those parts.. the rest is boring.

.
EDIT: I was able to see the game after that rage-inducing part. Also saw the ending. And it was very disappointing. It just.. sucks.

Spoiler

So you finally manage to get to the guy who I think is keeping this war going. However, the guy that helped you at the start of the game and raised you up when you lost your father, shoots him… then you. Because he can’t stand betrayal (and you’ve outlived your usefulness). So, you’re dead, and the credits roll. My jaw is hung open, going “… What? That’s IT?! You die after ALL THE HELL YOU WENT THROUGH?!?!?!”
Suddenly, something happens to the spoilers, and you’re alive again. … How? Plus, it seems you’re now working with the aliens instead of the other way around. You’re also on a mission to get revenge of the one that ‘killed’ you. Once you do via sniping, the real credits roll.
Obviously, there will never be peace between the two.

Wildstar: The 10 Day free trial and what I’ve learned

Right. First off, I originally thought their forum was so poorly-designed. Not only did it glitch out on me when I was going through the sections, but I was having to deal with a “You cannot start a new topic” thing instead of making a thread.
Basically, I had some questions to ask before I got into the trial, and I cannot. Bit annoyed. Turns out you have to have a game code to be able to post. Wish it told me this sooner.

There was also this questionable login screen. It was a basic button on a white screen, with a link in it. It was literally screaming “virus” to me. Turns out with this… Adblock was the fault. I had the websites in question blocked. When unblocking, the button went away and I got in.

Lastly, there’s also this stupid forced security thing, where you have to authorize your IP to access their site. And if your IP changes, you have to authorize that as well. A pretty tedious thing, and I wish it could be made into an option. Why so much security for a website? Bank websites should have this security, not this thing.

.
Whatever. Installing the game now. It’s 18GB. Pretty small game compared to others. Still going to take awhile.
Had a bit of an issue with installing. Mainly, I was originally using Sandboxie to check the game out and stuff, and got the download from it. I had accidentally forgot to specify I didn’t want the game installed to my C drive, and when it tried, I got a few Admin errors telling me it can’t do it, yet it did it anyway. When I realized my mistake I managed to stop it. However, that wasn’t going to fix where the game would be installed. Not until I find a way to move the install over to my non-Sandboxie drive.
Thought I would be able to just reinstall it using my non-Sandboxie version of Firefox, but sadly I couldn’t. I got “Your Free Trial has already been used.” when I tried. I was screwed.
Played around with Sandboxie, trying to think of a way to move the file over. Finally got it. By default, it was supposed to do it automatically. But now I’ve reached Sandboxie’s “free trial” period. Claims I can still use it, but it puts an annoying 5 second timer before I can. Plus it doesn’t automatically recover the file to my non-Sandboxie version.

Anyway, getting it now. Managed to pick where I wanted it to be installed. Will re-edit once I get the game fully downloaded and in the game.
Near 50% complete. Almost done.

Mmk, I’m in. Showed a pretty neat climatic. And now I see the restrictions of this free trial. I can only choose two PvE servers. That’s… OK I guess.
As for classes, I can only choose one race. The strange thing is, going between the two factions, the race gets randomly changed. Strange. Also, both races seem to be locked with the Class being ‘Spellslinger’, and the Path being a ‘Settler’. Hmm. More restrictions. I guess the next one is I’m going to be locked when hitting Level 10? Who knows…
Ok, this is interesting. I left to go do my daily walk around the neighborhood. When I got back, it said I was disconnected due to inactivity. Yet there was no option to get away from the screen. I had to X out of the game to do so.
Also, when getting back in, the ‘Settler’ path has changed to ‘Explorer’. So this is basing it on RNG.

So I picked an ‘Exile Human’. You can set its first and last name, similar to Guild Wars 2. Customization is similar to how WoD is doing it. However, you can fully customize your face! Really like this. I was afraid there would be absolutely no customization at all. Very happy.
The ONLY thing you can’t customize are the ears. That’s a bit odd. But the rest, you can customize your Chin, Eyes, Eyebrows, Mouth, and finally your Nose. Yet not the ears. Hmm..
So my Exile Human will be named… drumroll please… ‘Benie theNoob’. Yes, I’m just so original. In we go!!

The game starts as you’re mistaken as someone’s wife. You’re in a Cyro Pod, and are woken up. You need to find this guy’s wife. I also noticed other players, so it’s not like the Personal Story quests in Guild Wars 2. It’s like the start areas of WoW. Except, all races of that faction show up here instead of separate starting areas.
Anyway, once you rescue this woman, she has Cyro sickness and is in need of a medic very quickly. You and the guy get her to Sick Bay, using a shuttle.
Here, you get your weapons, which are dual energy pistols.

.
But really, the plot means nothing to me. As I cannot see NPC dialog wh en it l ooks li k e th i s…. not a great first impression.
So now I’m on the planet Nexus, which is the main focal point for the game. Did my quests as blindly as I could (as I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing). And now there’s this quest to help this guy… yet he isn’t fucking telling me where to go!

Another restriction I found of the trial, is no /zone chat. Yet, it’s not like anyone even uses the damn thing. I had to get someone to talk to me, in hopes he would explain why there’s no chat channels. And that’s the reason.

*sigh* Right… so this is what I know;
-There’s an AFK system, and it makes you well aware of that. Thankfully, just by simply moving your mouse, it takes you out of AFK. You don’t have to get up if you’re sitting somewhere.
-Restrictions of being able to pick races and classes of the free trial.
-Restrictions of being able to use /zone chat of the free trial.
-Hardly anyone talks or asks for help. Why is there even a /zone chat? All I’ve seen are people using /say.
-When clicking on a quest in the menu on the bottom right, it shows the direction of where you should go. However it’s not really reliable, as sometimes it tells you to go through a wall (or somehow manage to fly over a gap) to get there.
-The game looks and feels very sci-fi. You (and enemies) even have a shield.
-Enemies respawn within 30 seconds after you kill them. Why?
-Human run animation looks too stiff.
-When you crit an enemy before dying, it turns into a pile of bits. Very satisfying.
-Hilarious words said when leveling up. Like “Uh oh.. now your enemies are really shitting their pants!” Oh wow..
-Items do take damage overtime and must be repaired.
-Addons are allowed!
-You can get the “Provisionary Equivar License” at Level 3(though you don’t have access to the vendor until Level 8), which is that 24 mount lease. It’s only 5s.
-You can collect seeds that you can plant “in your farm”. Probably talking about the Player Housing thing. I’m going to hold onto these.
-The official forum feels… dead. Made two posts, and they haven’t got a response back in many hours.
-I manged to get my first gold piece before Level 5, where that would not be possible until.. Level 30 or so in WoW.
-There are flight paths like WoW, called “Taxi Vendors”. They seem to follow the same principle as a FP.

What I don’t know;
-What the four icons above my hotbar mean.
-Is there a bank?
-Am I ever going to get to a capital city? All I’ve been doing is questing, and no capital cities.

Overall, I don’t see myself wasting ANY money on this game, until I at least see that there’s a way to globally set the font size. Not just for the chat, but for the entire game. Because it’s just too damn small for my eyes.

Killzone: Shadow Fall – “born on the wrong side of the Wall”

Title: Killzone: Shadow Fall
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Publisher: Sony
Release Date: November 15th, 2013(U.S.)
Game Engine: Umbra 3
Number of Players: Single/Multi(Optional)
Gene: Sub-linear FPS

I got this game from a local DVD store for $15.99. Pretty cheap for a PS4 game. I got it due to this video Dan made last year. I remember how I really, really liked what I saw(even though he said there were quite a few flaws). I sooo badly wanted to see this popup on PC. Sadly, that never happened.

Anyway, I got it now. Time to have a sit down and play this thing for myself (as he only did the forth level).
So, from what I can make out as the plot of this game (which I heard from Dan that it doesn’t make sense). This is the 6th game in the Killzone series.
These aliens, in the last game (that I never played), their homeworld was destroyed. Yet for some odd reason, these humans decided to do a truce by allowing them to live on another planet (wtf?!). They did. (again.. WTF?!) However, the planet is already inhabited by another… race of humans. What’s worse? They’re the ones that destroyed the aliens’ homeworld! Hilarity ensues…
Anyway, instead of sharing the planet with the humans, the aliens are trying to kick the humans off the planet.. by force if need be.
As I said, you start as a kid. Your father (who looks like one of the rebels from City 17 in Half-Life 2. Even has the hat) claims they were promised safe passage. The only way to get there is to get beyond ‘the Wall'(and no, not the one in Pink Floyd). You and your father are trying to get to the Wall to be safe, but have to sneak past several of the aliens.

To make a long story short, your father dies (SPOI– ehh, it’s obvious) and you’re raised up by this group of rebel fighters who are trying to make sure the planet isn’t taken from them. You get the training you need as you grow up (with seeing these weird cutscenes of someone punching you while you’re in a bag).
And then there’s this scene, where you’re captured by the aliens and it looks like you’re about to be killed, and all it turns into some kind of prisoner trade with you being traded with a woman. Suddenly you see someone being shot, an RPG goes by you.. and I’m freakin’ confused.
But the most hilarious part is where it tells me “Square – Grab weapon!”. I do it, and then see one of the aliens staring at me. Then I see “R2 – Shoot him!” Hahahaha… just wow. Feels like something out of Borderlands’ comedy parts.
The rest, wasn’t as funny. As the woman grabs the gun from you and prepares to shoot you with it… then decides to run off and spares your life. Odd. Who was that woman? Whatever, as you’re rescued.

After that, shows a flyby of the city (and the title screen popping up). Pretty cool, if I must say for an intro! Yet also a bit confusing at the same time.
Finally, I get to do my first mission, which is to get this intel. I also got to “deal with” my first enemy. The game says to ‘jump on’ the enemy, and I literally jump onto his head… died instantly due to the guy looking up and filling me full of lead. 😛
Did it again, trying to jump on the enemy. Ended up jumping beside him instead. So much FAIL. Eventually I just said “Fuck it!” and melee’d him to death. The fact I’m on Easy, it seems a stab wound is fucking deadly. One stab, one kill (and we’re not talking a backstab here). Who the hell needs a sniper rifle, when I can stab someone and they instantly die?

Eventually I got my weapons, and met ‘OWL’. OWL (aka “Jeffery” to Dan), is a multi-purpose robot companion (and an FPS’ best friend). It can assist you in providing covering fire(or just kill the baddies for me as the aiming is shit(to me) on a controller), stun your enemies instead of killing them for stealth, shield you against attackers. And in certain areas, you can use it to rappel down to pretty much anywhere (literally a mobile rappel line). Just be aware that there’s certain places, can lead to your hilarious demise. Watch were you rappel down to. 🙂
You can control your OWL by using that big-ass button above your HAT sticks. The direction you swipe it tells the robot what mode to go into. Hitting L2 summons the OWL. Holding down L2 tells it to go back.
In combat, if the OWL takes a lot of damage, it will automatically go back to you to heal up. So it cannot be destroyed. The OWL can also be used to revive you if you die, given if you have an Adrenaline pack or two on you.

You also have abilities of your own, like a device called a ‘Tactical Echo’. It can pick up points of interest, and enemy locations. The longer you hold the button down, the further the sonar will go and the longer the objects will stay. However, it comes with a risk (that I do like). If you hold it down too long, you’ll end up overloading it and causing a ping sound, alerting nearby enemies to your location. Good balancing here.
There’s also no cooldown timer… unless you overload it. Very nice.
You can also heal yourself with those Adrenaline Packs. Doing so gives you a temporary bullet-time affect, allowing you to time your shots right.

.
Review time;

Good:
-The OWL helps by killing your enemies. Plus it can teleport.
-Beautiful, jaw-dropping landscape and art styles.
-Quick reload times for when you die.
-Able to choose which objective you wish to tackle first. It all leads up in the end.
-Awesome, interesting weapons. Especially the standard issue Sniper/Assault Rifle.

Bad:
-Enemies don’t eventually go back to what they were doing if they saw you. They keep waiting for you.. forever.
-Easy difficulty is TOO easy(at times). Enemies instantly die if I stab them (not talking a takedown or a backstab) just once, however it takes several rounds of the OWL to kill one enemy.
-Confusing plot.
-Why is it when I pick up a weapon, it replaces my secondary weapon instead of my primary?
-Checkpoints are few and far in-between. Try not to screw up too much (like instantly dying of an area that you shouldn’t be)…

.
Final Thoughts: I’ll be honest. The plot so far just continues to baffle me. Why… why is the human race so STUPID?! They eliminate the alien homeworld… yet make a truce, only for these aliens to come to the planet the SAME group of humans that killed the alien homeworld, and now they’re living on the planet (to do questionable (to me) things). Personally, I expected them to wipe everyone out, or use them as slave labor. Like the Combine did in Half-Life 2.
Thinking about the reason why they suddenly “felt sorry” about making the aliens’ homeworld a lifeless rock floating in space, this truce was to get the survivors out of there. There are always beings caught in wars, that never wanted to be in it. This was their way of helping these guys out. Makes sense.
What doesn’t…WHY in the fuck did they lead them to to the planet, that had the race of the SAME fucking people who did the bomb?! Who was in charge of this truce? Did they not see the possible repercussions of this happening? Or did they just not care?

So they let them live with the humans, by resurrecting a humongous wall to separate them and the humans. Yet, skirmishes still happen. And these have evolved into the aliens wanting the planet all to themselves. Yet can you not blame them? The humans, destroyed their world. Don’t you think they want a new one (and rather piss off the ones that caused this mess)?
So why are we at war? Because we want the planet back. We feel like, we don’t have to move.. yet it’s OUR fucking fault they’re here!! Someone needs to fucking WAKE UP!! I don’t even know where the irony starts.
Who’s really the “good guy” in this mess? Obviously, there are no “good guys”. Not even this guy I play as.

.
Final Review: Even with the confusing plot and characters I don’t know anything about as I never played the previous Killzone games, the game is really pretty. But it also feels like a ‘next gen tech demo’.
This game feels like it was supposed to set the bar, of how good the PS4’s graphics would look. But as most know, graphics don’t always make an awesome game. The plot and the mechanics, are what make it awesome. This… suffers from that. At least it isn’t shit, and that’s OK in my book.
Surprised I found a copy that’s so, so much cheaper than the $40 price tag on the Playstation Store.

Wildstar could be my new MMO, by October of this year

So, Wildstar. I kept hearing references of it, yet I know very little. Hearing the game is dying, or it’s more hardcore. It was just Wildstar this and Wildstar that. And the only thing I know about a “Wildstar” is that character from The Lego Movie. I’ve also heard the game was made by Ex-WoW devs.

Then I saw this pretty cool video from The Lazy Peon (an ex-WoW player) if you should play this game when it goes FTP(Free To Play) “in a few months”. And he’s convinced me I definitely should.
Yet the whole ‘free to play’ thing worries me. I don’t know if they’re going to be optional like Guild Wars 2 does it with the Gems, or something worse.

Anyway, I really like what I saw. The game itself feels a bit.. cartoony at times, especially the “LEVEL UP!!” screen. But maybe that’s a good thing.
As for the races, you got your standard ones. There’s a questionable one for Amine freaks, and there’s also a Drakkin race! However.. think Charr from Guild Wars 2 before you get any ideas. Because that’s what it looks like. At least it doesn’t run on all fours (doesn’t fly either).

There seems to be an actual questing system, and not those Renowned Hearts from Guild Wars 2. Me likey. Also, when you hit Level 15, not only do you get to use mounts (and even a mount that you can rent for 24 RL hours. Think of it as a Test Drive Mount).. but have player housing! ACTUAL PLAYER HOUSING!!! 😀
And I’m talking SO… SO much better than the way Guild Wars 2 does it (or even WoD’s Garrison)!!
You have full… full customizable control over this large area. It’s all yours. Walls. Furniture. Decorations… you can place IT ALL!! Plus, it encourages you to visit other player houses (and even make a friend or two). It doesn’t force you to be social, it lets you choose.

So going by what I’ve seen, this is what I like and dislike, and really want to try this game out when it goes FTP;

Like;
-Drakkin race.
-100% customizable, 100% YOUR DESIGN player housing!
-Actual questing system!
-Combat system looks fun. You can shield yourself from enemy fire.
-PvE and PvP servers, like WoW. No silly World VS World thing.
-Sub-classes. You can be a Warrior Spellslinger.
-Classes are actually spelled “Classes” and not “Professions”, unlike Guild Wars 2.

Dislike;
-Cartoony, cheap-made look and feel.
-Completely void of any character customization. Can’t change the face or anything.

Neutral;
-Do chairs and beds have a way for you to relax on? Aka, can you sit in a chair?
-Feeling unsure what the devs will do when it becomes FTP.

Rocket League – Hot Wheels meets Soccer

Title: Rocket League
Developer: Psynonix
Publisher: Psynonix
Release Date: Unknown
Game Engine: Unreal 4
Number of Players: Single/Multi
Gene: 3rd person driving/soccer game

Of the three games I’ve played, I was sure this one wouldn’t suck or ‘be not for me’. Because Dan showed off this game just a day ago, and he had a lot of fun with it. I… I’m actually not, really. Mainly, remember how I said I suck with a controller? Heh.. this proves it. Where Dan had scored 15 goals on Rookie difficulty, I… scored 0. My problem? I’m trying to rush to the ball, then I cock it up and either go past it and not hit it (and go where the ball isn’t), or end up smacking it in our goal instead of the opposing team. :/

Even with the customization options, there’s nothing that would help to control the car’s turning radius. But you can decorate it in quite a few colors and shapes. You can set a logo, color, a hat to wear (yes, even this game has hats. Curse you TF2!) and also a world flag. I of course picked the USA flag. You can also unlock other cars. Unlocks are earned even if you lose horribly.

You can learn how to play the game (has a pretty good tutorial system), but it didn’t really do me any good when I had AI players smacking the ball away from me (even my own AI teammates). I think I’m better off as a Goalie. Seriously. At least there, I can watch the action, cheer when my team wins, and block the ball from going in our goal.

I also tried this championship match (as a goalie). So far, the Dragons (me and my AI team) have won 2 and lost 2. There’s been some really crappy teams, and some really good ones. The last match, we were getting destroyed. And myself as a Goalie wasn’t really doing a good job stopping the ball from going in.

.
Review time. Since we’re being literally stomped on by mammoths (and what’s worse, they’re in 8th place on the standings and we’re #1), I might as well do the review;

Good:
-Fun gameplay.
-Can be fully played in Single Player, unlike DRIVECLUB.
-Utilizes Unreal 4 engine quite well.

Bad:
-Seems the standings have no real meaning to the level of difficulty. I got it on Rookie (which should effect all bot teams), and I keep getting my ass kicked by some teams, while we curb-stomp others. And the ones that kick our ass are low in the standings. That’s not realistic. It’s all based on RNG and not difficulty.

Neutral:
-A bitch to master.
-Microstuddering when a championship match starts, but only one time.

.
Final review: If you’ve used a controller for most of your life, you’ll master this game no problem. If you’re like me who has used a keyboard & mouse all of their life, you will have issues even on the easiest difficulty (and are better off being a Goalie for your AI teammates).

DRIVECLUB Playstation Plus Edition – “Are you done downloading yet?!”

Title: Driveclub: Playstation Plus Edition
Developer: Eveloution Studios
Publisher: Unknown
Release Date: Unknown
Game Engine: Unknown
Number of Players: Single and Multiplayer
Gene: First person racing

Reading the description of this “exclusive Playstation Plus edition”, and how it says “If you want more, upgrade to the full version for $25!”….. mmhmm. Already sounds like a demo. Typical Sony.
Yet the funny thing is, if this was a demo, then how come I have spent 5+ hours waiting for the game to download? Let’s see… I had to wait a half an hour for the main game to install, then 3+ hours for the Application Data, and another 5+ hours to grab the Update File. This review is going to go REAL well! inb4 really, really bad review…
I wish this could be a “Benie’s HELL – DRIVECLUB Playstation Plus Edition” blog post.

Anyway, here we go! After launching and seeing the intro, I’m greeted to the controls, where I have to accept.. hmm. “You must accept using a controller! DO IT!!”… nah, I like my keyboard & mouse more. 😛
So I just did a race in some snowy track, and I’m sitting there slipping and sliding.. to 12th (last) place. I was actually 1st.. for about two seconds. Can’t figure out where the freakin’ break button is. I must say, though.. quite awesome effects with the snow hitting the windshield. I never knew snow could smear into white streaks like that.

After getting that done.. I was greeted to the main menu. What an odd way to start a game. Anyway, the game does have Single and Multiplayer. Of course, having no friends, I picked the Single Player option. Here I can race, do a time trial, or a drag run. Chose the race option.
And there are these races that take place through a lot of locations… yet I have to “upgrade” my Playstation Plus Edition. Yes, I must pay $25 to play a game I have no idea what it’s about, to unlock the other locations! *claps* Brilliant, Sony! BRILLIANT!! … And I thought Blizzard was bad.

My only free option of locations, is going to India. There are 13 levels in it. Some of these are the same level but in reverse.
Setting up the level, I got to set weather and stuff, then pick the kind of car I want to use. Most of them are locked to either the game, or the upgrade. There’s only two cars in this gigantic list of vehicles I can drive. Two.

After picking one of of the two available vehicles, I do find it pretty cool how I was able to customize the paint, or just leave it as stock. The other cool part is watching myself opening up the driver’s side door and getting in the car. Right.. going to do this race and see how it goes. Probably going to be last again.
YEP… last! I didn’t even get close to seeing at least 10th place. They were like.. miles away from me.

.
Right.. time for the review (after losing three times(with everytime in 12th place), this is going in the trash).

Good:
-The game actually has player vehicle damage!
-Cool animation of getting into your car before a race.

Bad:
-AI drivers are immune to vehicle damage!
-AI drivers cannot spin out, and NEVER fuck up! No matter how many times I smack them.
-No difficulty level for AI drivers.
-The game is designed with friends in mind. You can also race against other player drivers.
-The game took many, many hours to download. Yet all it was, was a fucking demo…
-Blurred textures (road surface, trees, bilboards.. everything).
-No vehicle customization. I can’t make my car go any faster.

Final review… don’t even download this, or buy it (unless you have friends who play it, and/or have Fiber Optic as your internet connection). I didn’t even try out the online play, because I’m not going there.

Styx: Master of Shadows – Sneaky sneaky…failey failey…

Title: Styx: Master of Shadows
Developer: Cyanide Studio
Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
Release Date: October 7th, 2014
Game Engine: Unknown
Number of Players: Single
Gene: 3rd person hardcore stealth

I had mixed opinions with this game when I saw it on Steam on its release date. It claimed it was for ‘hardcore stealth fans’. I like stealth, but I also like a good ole fashioned “DIE IN THE FACE!!!”
Anyway, this game seems to have a lot of Dishonored in it (mainly playing stealthy, and looking through keyholes), and also how you have the option of hiding the body.
There’s also added editions to separate this game from Dishonored. Such as, you can scale walls, you can put out torches to remain in the shadows. You can also use sand with some of your spit to knock out distant torches.

Anyway, the plot. You’re on some far away planet (not Earth). You play as Styx, an old goblin who is a master at being stealthy (and again I make him look really bad at it). Humans are seen as ‘bad guys’, trying to siege control of amber from the Elves. Styx wants the amber to himself. And the way to get it is the source; the heart of the World Tree (no, not the one in WoW. This one glows). He wants it to be the last thing he does before he retires.
However, he gets captured. And after a rather lengthy cutscene, you eventually get to play. Styx seems to sometimes almost break the forth wall when he talks about how he needs something, or something is in the way (to the player). Almost feels like Deadpool at times.

In the second level, you get to use a clone of yourself to not only distract enemies, but get to areas you cannot access. Feels like a bit of The Swapper. Yeah.

.
Right. Review time.

Good:
-Can’t really think of anything. Guess.. it’s not shit? That’s a good thing.

Bad:
-During some cutscenes, the FPS goes down to 20.
-Intro cutscenes take WAY too long…
-Plot isn’t that well explained. It’s another one of those “Was there a game before this?” things.
-Difficulty seems to not matter. I’m playing on Easy, and there’s no alertness bar. The second they see you, you’re fucked.
-Controls aren’t properly taught to you, especially the whole “throw sand at torch”. It never tells you how to select a torch.
-No way to do a non-lethal takedown (Dishonored had an option). It takes a good 15 seconds to do a muffled kill, exposing yourself to enemies you didn’t see.
-There was one part where I was literally stuck. Was watching this guy. Took too long, and now he won’t fucking move away from the window.
-Bad (yet hilarious) lip syncing.

Neutral:
-Game feels too punishing for people who suck at stealth. But it’s actually supposed to be.

.
I dunno, guys. I guess the game assumes you know how it works before you play it? This just isn’t for me. I’m not that good at stealth. But as I said before, I love good stealth games. And this is a really, really good stealth game. Don’t get me wrong about that, but it doesn’t help n00bs like myself out. Plus, I wish I had something more than just a dagger.
Glad I got it for free. 🙂
