New Super Mario Bros Wii – “Lets’a Fail!”

I FINALLY manned up and… did naughty illegal things. 😛 I downloaded an ISO of the game off the Pirate Bay. So illegal. But let’s say, Nintendo deserves it for not allowing Youtubers to show videos of their games without having their ass (and their balls) sued.
I was willing to give them lots of money to own a Wii (maybe a Wii U on top of it). But, nope. They done .. do this.

What am I saying? Yes! The review. New Super Mario Bros Wii. Released back in 2009 (making it 6 years old). Game runs fine through Dolphin. It’s quite fun, and I love how every now and then, when a specific beat of every song happens, all enemies on the screen will dance. How long they dance is low long this specific beat happens. Goombas will jump, Koopas will swing their arms and legs(as if they’re dancing), and the fish will roll. To say it’s ‘cute’, yes. It gives a new level of awesome in the Mario universe.

There’s brand new powerups, such as the propeller hat which takes advantage of the Wiimote’s shake feature. Though since I’m now currently using my PS4 controller(getting the fucking thing to work with my computer was a pain in the ass. Will explain later), I’m using my right stick to “shake” the Emulated Wiimote up.
There’s also the Penguin suit, unlocked in World 3. And finally the Ice Flower. An Ice version of the Fire Flower which can freeze an enemy solid on impact for a short period of time. It can knock flying enemies out of the sky.

The music in the game is lovely. Hell, I can’t get the Overworld music out of my head.

.
.
But then there’s something that really… really makes me mad. It’s these ‘Hint Movies’. If you fail a total of 8 times to complete a level, the game literally takes pity on your soul. You can use it to have Luigi fucking show me off (yet never bothers to get those star coins).
And then, once he’s done laughing in my face that he completed the level (which takes me 25+ times)… the game has the nerve to say “So, you saw how it’s done. Care to not suck ass at platformer games (that you should had mastered back in the 1990’s) and try again?”
Shit makes me want to throw down my controller. Of course everything I said above, doesn’t really happen (in that way). But it definitely sure feels like it. When I see the green box on my 8th death with that ringing sound, it’s like I hear “Wow, you really suck this bad?! Here, let me help you!”
I don’t need Nintendo to ‘hold my hand’. I’ll fucking GET this level done.. eventually!!

.
Right. Time for the review. The words “no option” are used a lot;

Good;
-Memorial characters, like any Mario game.
-Awesome music, and occasionally seeing enemies dancing to it.
-Like some of the Mario games before it, you can replay old levels.
-It’s like 2D and 3D in one game. It’s just, really awesome.
-When rescuing a Toad, you hear the level complete music from Super Mario Bros 1.
-Most of the sounds of the game are from the original Super Mario Bros.
-Completing one of the Toad house minigames, gives you instant powerups (just select them before getting in a level). You can use these to help you clear a tough level.

Bad;
-Having Dash set to its own key instead of the D-Pad.
-The whole Save Toad thing seems to take place on the same level, multiple times. Can get quite annoying.
-Having to hold the ‘1’ button (my Triangle key) when carrying a Toad to rescue all the way to the exit. No toggable option to make it easier?
-You can’t spam fireballs or ice balls like you could in the other Mario games. Now it’s 2 balls every 1.5 seconds.
-Quick Saving isn’t what I expect. You can only truly save after defeating one of the Koopalings in their castle. The Quick Save is misleading, as it doesn’t save your game between playthroughs.
-The ‘Hint Movies’ are… UGH! Fail enough times trying to complete a level, and Nintendo takes pity on you.
-Getting the Star Coins are rather pointless. All they are is a currency to unlock Hint Movies (the things I mentioned above).

Issues relating to the Dolphin Emulator;
-No save game option. If the thing crashes for no reason, you gotta redo the same levels all over again.
-Was forced to use my PS4 controller, as it was even more of a bitch to configure all the buttons of the Wiimote to my keyboard (and not have them reset on me).
-Possible crash on World 1, Level 1-6. When going up a beanstalk and down the other pipe, the game blackscreens after going in the pipe (yet doesn’t officially crash). Looked online, and no one’s reporting it (or Google again doesn’t know what I’m looking for).

.
Final Verdict: As pretty and cute as this game and its characters are, the fact I cannot save (and actually keep said save between playthroughs), feels really brutal and sucks.
Of course, this is what all platformers in the 80’s and 90’s were like.

.
EDIT: I knew my persistence would pay off. I found working cheats. Not only did I manage to give myself infinite lives, but tricked the game to think I’ve completed it to unlock normal saving (instead of the pathetic Quick Save option).
However, cheating comes at a cost. … Mario’s hat is missing. There’s one that removes the hat, but I never enabled it. May need to go on the Dolphin forums after my Benie Fails At playthrough, and ask what’s going on.

.
EDIT2: I’ll take back what I said about the Super Guide. Mainly that you get to play as Luigi at ANY time. You can use him to get past a level that you cuss a lot at, then right back to the action by pressing the ‘+’ button.
Just tell it to pass the level after you (as Luigi) defeat the level. It’s helped me to get past two really brutal castle levels. Yes, it takes pity on you. But as long as you use it to pass an area you’re having difficulty with and then play normally (as Luigi), it’s really OK.

And this month’s ‘Benie Fails At’ game is….

Killzone Shadow Fall!!
Aren’t I just lucky…

So I threw all of my played PS4 games (that are level-based) in a list on random.org, and shook them up for a good 25 times. And the result was Killzone Shadow Fall being on the top.
You can check out my review of the game here, and also my final post about it here. So yeah… I’m going to try to beat that unbeatable part of the game. As if dying 51 times wasn’t enough!

Stay tuned tomorrow at 4pm EDT for Part 1 of the video!

‘Super Mario Maker”s controversial launch date

I’m not really sure if it’s official or not, but I keep hearing rumors that the super popular game (thanks to Youtube), Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo Wii U, is to be released… today.
Of all days to release a game, especially one with a video game character that practically every person on the planet knows by name, …. why did they pick one of the most saddest days of modern American history to launch it?

9/11. The day America stood still. Yet in our hearts, we had a new respect for our country; our freedom.. and especially the many, many brave men and women that still fight for it.
And they want to release a Mario game, on this day. Maybe they don’t care. They see it as ‘just another day’. Well, tell that to the ones that lost loved ones in the towers. Tell that to the brave firefighters that went into those buildings to rescue people. And tell that to the brave people that stopped the 3rd plane before it too could do more terror.

I can just see the trending area on Twitter explode, not just with 9/11 “never forget” tweets, but also with this and its ill-timed release date. This is just wrong, even for Nintendo.
Does Mario even have a say in this? Or is Nintendo literally putting a gun to his head? Because they’re going to be doing the same for all of those Super Mario Maker videos on Youtube. Can’t wait to see the mass copyright takedowns.

.
EDIT: So far on my Twitter feed, #amiibo and #NeverForget are trending. Nothing about Super Mario Maker. That’s good.

A new thing coming every Saturday: “Benie Fails At” series

I’ve been debating what date to do this, and have finally decided on a time. Most Youtubers do it, but I unfortunately can only do this idea with PS4 games.
Yes, I promised I was also going to do video reviews on PC games. But I had forgotten that my computer can’t possibly handle it (let alone something graphic-intensive like Far Cry 4) while recording.
My PS4’s video capturing system, doesn’t require my computer’s specs to run both the game and the recording at the same time. Yes, the videos are 720p. But the graphics look good enough to me (and the audio is 100% synced)!

So therefore, I’m going to be picking one of of the existing PS4 games from my library. It could be something I purchased or got from PS+ this month, or it could be something I picked up months ago. But I’m going to be making it more interesting, both for me and for you.
And this is how it’s going to be done;

1. The game has to be level-based. No Multiplayer games. Games like Warframe, I’ll play. But I won’t be playing Rocket League (as it’s not level-based).
2. To make things interesting, the level has to be completed within the 15 minute limit of a single PS4 video, to be considered a completed level (they will NOT be edited, as I’m a n00b at Sharefactory).
2a. If the level is not completed, I will be doing a sub-completion level of where I didn’t make it to 15 minutes to try again (every Monday).
3. All the levels of the game have to be completed before I move on to another. If you don’t wish to watch the series, then don’t. Or just wait ’till next month when I review another game.

In the rare occasion that I run out of games to play, the series will stop until I get some new ones. The reason I say ‘rare’, is I get new ones to download every month via PS+. And hopefully, most playthoughs will last longer than a month, giving you, the viewer, lots of content to watch.

Does this mean I’m switching gears and going with videos instead of my normal blogs? NO!! This website would be called Benies-Videos.com instead of this! Normal blog posts about gaming will still be in here! THIS, you have my promise(because I know it’s something I can do). 🙂

So stay tuned tomorrow to see the reveal of the first PS4 game that I will be failing to complete in the series.
Note: All videos will be Unlisted, but you’re free to comment and share with your friends if you wish to do so. Just also note that I have the right to monitor your comments for moderation.

Teslagrad – A 3RD free PS4 game?! Yep!

Title: Teslagrad
Developer: Rain Games
Publisher(PS4): Square Enix
Release Date(PS4): April 14th, 2015
Game Engine: Unity
Number of Players: Single
Genre: 2D Retro Side Scroller/Shooter/Speed-Running
Youtube Game Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5mjFeU8Eb4

There’s actually four free games for the PS4 this month. The 4th being a game called “Xeodrifter”. Yet for some reason, it refuses to download itself on my PS4. I had to look for it through my computer, as it wouldn’t show up on my PS4.
Whatever. I did find this game. It’s another “weird but interesting” game. Sony seems to be doing a general theme for the past several months, giving us cheap made side-scrollers.
However, this game isn’t one of them. Especially when it has, for the first time (that I’ve seen) EVER in a PS4 game… the ability to change what buttons do what! Not even GTAV has this option! That’s freakin’ cool!
It’s also a game that never got released to the U.S. until April 14th, 2015.

So anyway, this is a 3D sidescroller, with a lot of puzzle solving. You play as a poor, homeless orphan found by this guy and given to this nice woman. The years go by, and then some mean men show up to get you and the woman that took care of you. You emerge from the house to become a player character. You’re about.. ohh.. 10-12 years old (I’m guessing)? You must run away to.. I have no idea where. I guess to get away from the bad men. Here you’re introduced to the game’s basic climbing mechanics.

Eventually you enter a warehouse where you’re introduced to the game’s main mechanics (the puzzle solving part). You eventually also get what I believe to be a Power Glove. L1 causes the glove to turn Blue, and R1 causes the glove to turn Red.
The puzzle parts are quite confusing. See, blue meets with red, and red meets with blue. But blue needs blue to activate… sometimes. It’s explained to the best of my abilities in the video review (more like, shown). This is what I really love about doing these video reviews. It’s better to see than explain.

.
And here I feel is a good time for my final review;

Good;
-Able to bind your controller buttons to different things.
-Puzzles aren’t TOO over-complicated. But watching a walkthrough could help.

Bad;
-No story or plot. Who are you, who are these people, and why do these Russian-looking guys want to catch you? Is this some sort of “the days of WWII” thing?

.
Final Verdict: Since I’ve been unable to give a solid opinion of all three PS4 games I’ve reviewed, all I can say is this: use the video and decide for yourself. It’s all I can really tell you.

Super Time Force Ultra – It’s TIME for another review!

Title: Super Time Force Ultra
Developer: Capybara Games
Publisher: *Unknown*
Release Date(PS4): September 1st, 2015
Game Engine: *Unknown*
Number of Players: Single
Genre: 2D Retro Side Scroller/Shooter/Speed-Running
Youtube Game Review: https://youtu.be/A2yRrxAaAlw

Time travel. It’s something most humans wanted for many years. The ability to go back in time and stop ourselves from doing something really stupid in our lives (like me getting into the WoD Beta! Shots fired). Or even seeing ancient history, like the Egyptians, the ancient Greeks, even dinosaurs.

So back in 1987(no, not the ‘Bite of 87’ to you FNaF Fanboys) in Philadelphia, PA.. a brilliant scientist named “Doctor Repeatski” has finally invented the one thing we’ve been waiting for: a Time Travel machine! However (and of course you didn’t expect humans to actually be smart enough to use time travel properly…), it causes Earth almost be blown up, and now there’s a robot uprising with killer robots taking over. It turns the once beautiful city into ‘Cincindelphia, USSA’ in the near ‘198X’.

Suddenly the future Doctor Repeatski (named ‘Commander Repeatski’), decked with medals all over his chest, shows up to help the situation. Stating that himself in the future is now the commander of an elite fighting force called “Super Time Force”.

You enter the future doctor’s practice course. Soon you will be able to control three main characters (as you advance in the tutorial); “Jean Rambois”(the gunner), “Aimy Mckillin”(the sniper), and “Shieldy Blocker”(the pretty obvious).
At the start, you can switch between these three characters. You can unlock a total of 16 characters in the entire game. This ‘Ultra’ version that came out, I heard rumors that even more characters are available (such as ones from VALVe and Minecraft).

The object of the game is to complete the entire level in 1 minute. I personally am not a fan of ‘beat the clock’ games (even though this game’s mechanics were done very well). It’s actually pretty possible, but you must use the power of Time Travel to your advantage. For that, you need what is known as a Time Out.
And no, I’m not telling you to face the corner until you think about what you’ve done. Think of the Time Out system as an Undo. You can undo your death, but it costs one Time Out. You have 30 at each start of the level. Finding what are known as ‘Glorbs’, gives you an extra Time Out.

As for the time, if you use a Time Out, look to the top of the level as you’ll see glowing shards. Either shoot or grab them and time will slow down for about 5-10 seconds, giving you.. well.. TIME to plan your attack. Did I mention there’s a lot of time puns in this game? No? Well, it’s about TIME I did!
Ok, I’ll stop.

So anyway, another thing I forgot to mention, if you get hit by a laser blast by the robots (called ‘Blounbots’), you insta-die. This makes the game somewhat annoying, especially when you’re… wait for it… running OUT OF TIME!!! 😀
*sigh* Right. Enough time puns!
There is one thing I really don’t like. The right stick is useless in this game. Your left stick is not only your movement stick, but also your aiming stick. And there’s no way of changing it. That’s just stupid.

.
So, it’s about THAT TIME… to do my final review;

Good;
-Pretty cool time control-based gameplay.
-Nice retro music.
-Shows why “we can’t have nice things” (as in the power to travel through time).

Bad:
-Left stick controls both movement and aiming. Why isn’t the right stick being used?
-A bit too punishing with its one hit = you die thing.
-No option to start a new game and overwrite your existing save.

Final Verdict: Please note that my reviews may sound bias. So just base your decision on my video review and see if this is a game you would like to play.
Me? No. I’ve personally seen better. Again, that’s my opinion.

Grow Home – An oddball game

Title: Grow Home
Developer: Ubisoft Reflections
Publisher: Ubisoft
Release Date(PS4): September 1st, 2015
Game Engine: Unity
Number of Players: Single
Genre: 3rd Person Exploration/Puzzle
Youtube Game Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1OylnSpEuw

So this is Grow Home. It was recently ported over from PC/Steam. It’s one of the two free games for the PS4 on Playstation Plus, for September 2015. It’s also a game that I’ve seen quite a lot of reviews on, but it never really interested me.
Because it’s mainly on how short of a main quest this game has (for what I’ve heard). But there’s also something I actually saw as proof, and that’s Ubisoft’s greedy hands all over it. They didn’t just publish this game, they made it. And apparently that gives them permission to get you to link your forced uPlay account with this game. Ahahaha.. no. 😛

Anyway, this game is about a red robot named BUD(Botanical Utility Droid), sent to a strange planet to grow what is known as a “Star Plant”. You must grow this plant to a total of 2,000 meters(or 1.24 miles).
Upon arriving on the planet, your Internal Power is low from the trip. You see a crystal in the distance, with a disembodied thing named ‘M.O.M” telling you to pick it up.
Once you do, it shows “1% Crystal”. At 10, 20, 60, 80, and 100 crystals, you’ll get a powerup. And these crystals are everywhere on this planet. Good luck finding them, as some are probably in very hard to reach areas.

You can also pick up (and/or pull) other things, like plants, rocks, animals, and flowers. Pushing on the other hand is quite hard to do. You can pull things by holding down your L and R keys, and pull back on your left stick (or down on your D-Pad).
Climbing, while not an original mechanic, is done pretty well. And the higher you go, you really need to master it. The game tells you how to climb, though I question why both the L1/R1 AND L2/R2 buttons are set to do so. Of course, it’s made by Ubisoft. So I shouldn’t be surprised.

A tiny bit later, you’ll encounter the Fall Flower. These seem to grow on hills (go figure). This works similar to a parachute, but it has a limited use which is shown by the number of pedals on the flower. You can either see how many are left visually, or the new blue bag showing the number of pedals left on BUDs back.

So now I move on to the Star Plant itself. It has these unique vines sticking out of them. These are called ‘Star Shoots’. In a way, and you’ll know it when you see it, they… *clears throat* look like the…. male reproductive organ. Especially when they.. erm.. ‘erect’ when used. *cough*

.
Well.. with that visual thought hopefully out of our memories, let’s get to my review;

Good:
-Straightforward tutorial system.
-Friendly atmosphere
-Sheep with humorous, freaked out eyeballs
-Challenging puzzles
-You get to explore fully
-No death system. You simply respawn, and can so infinite times.

Bad:
-Made by Ubisoft (yes, it was going to be listed here. You all knew it)
-Why are both sets of L and R buttons set to grab and climb?

Final Verdict: If you don’t mind the stench of Ubisoft, and looking for a fun game (when everything else is boring to you), pick this game up. It’s worth a playthough.

Video recording blues / The two new games for PS+

I didn’t know recording a video, let alone getting a script to work alongside of what’s going on in the game was so challenging! But it’s a challenge I’m willing to do.
The worst part isn’t screwing up when reading off the script and starting from the top (as it’s human nature to learn not to do that again), but being interrupted by things out of one’s control. Such as an annoying cat who won’t fucking leave me alone.. just like a clingy friend. Except this friend is all fur and demands to be noticed every. freakin’. SECOND!
And she just has that face that I just can’t ignore. She literally has me wrapped around her claws.
I finally got so fed up that I picked her up and took her outside. Hopefully she won’t demand to be let back in, saying “You’re not getting rid of me that easily!”

.
But now without her in my hair, I can at least discuss what I was trying to record(and failing a lot). It was one of the two games that popped up on the Playstation Store’s PS+ area;
Grow Home (ported from PC/Steam last month, and the one I tried to record)
Super Time Force Ultra

EDIT: Now that the domain switch is done, beniesbuilds.com will no longer haunt me, and benies-blogs.com now being the new home for this and my General blog, I will be restarting the recordings tomorrow afternoon (and also doing my text-based blogs).
Stay tuned!

“Benie Fails At: Rocket League”, testing a new video thing

I’m in the process of uploading my first ever video from my PS4 onto Youtube. I’ll be linking it in this post of when it’s done uploading and processing.
This is going to be a new, alternate way of me doing game reviews (via PS4). I’m also going to be using Livestream to do PC Game reviews, and my “Benie Fails At” series that I really wanted to do, yet didn’t know where to start at.

By using Livestream, I’m not ‘required’ to use complicated, expensive video recording/editing software. I am in no need to make money from Youtube videos, or even in want of lots of subscribers.

The reason I wanted to do it, is I noticed a decline of the way I do my reviews. I don’t feel I have that passion as I did in the past. It’s also, how complicated it is to explain a complex game (take my last reviewed PS4 game: Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones). It was such a pain to get my words and paragraphs just right to feel like an actual, believable video game review.
With this alternate thing, you the viewer of this blog will not only hear my review(once I find that crap mic that I got when I unboxed my PS4), but see why I said what I said about it. For example, if you saw an error, you would see why I would be so angered about it crashing.

Now rest assured, I will still be doing my tried and true for years.. text-based video game reviews(aka blog posts). But I will have a link to the video at the bottom of it.

.
EDIT: Video IS UP!! WOO! Click here to see it.

Issues I’m facing in ESO:TU

I guess I forgot to list what has really been bugging me since the patch. There’s actually several things, and they all seem to conjoin together into one big mess instead of things I could just deal with.

1. Studdering when moving/pulling put my weapon/combat.
2. Cannot interrupt humanoid mobs as much as I could when they do their “I’m going to throw my shit at you like a monkey!” attack. There seems (as I said before) to be an invisible RNG.
3. V1 mobs seem to take longer to kill. I am hearing from the forum that crafted gear is weaker.
4. Longer loading times when getting into the game. Nothing all too major, though.

Though it feels, just like WoD, that the players are the beta testers. This doesn’t fare well with me liking the game. What I’ve seen in the forum is worse than what’s bugging me. Mainly people complaining about how their Stamina tank builds have been nerfed badly, why there was hardly any PvE content in a PvP DLC, and even reports of 10-15 minute load times when fast traveling(or even zoning through areas).

The first thing I mentioned, doesn’t fare well with how much I love using a bow (especially my DK). With Stamina being nerfed, it’s pointless to use a bow now. It’s also pointless to use a shield (which affects a lot of tanks).
It feels like another “Let’s totally not separate PvP from PvE when it comes to stats and nerf everything!” thing.
On top of it, the devs seem to downplay the graphic-based issues, doing the usual “blame addons/outdated drivers” tactic and doing nothing about the problems.

I really don’t want to leave this game, but it really feels like I should. Players (from my perspective) are comparing the devs to Blizzard (for their incompetence). Maybe I just need some time off from the game. Though I was also hoping that maybe a simple upgrade to the two gear sets that my Sorcerer is wearing, would help with his DPS.

Dunno what I’m going to do.
