DJ working on a Dutchie meetup / ‘JeroWorks’ development

Woke up today, expecting to see a few messages from Discord on my phone. Got
nothing, but I did see activity in DJ’s Discord.
Also last night (with the ‘spy drama’ of Frost hopefully behind Jero and I), finally got to work on what I wanted to do with his avatar. Titled the project– ‘JeroWorks’. And no it’s not a BONEWORKS clone.

‘Personal’
As I said, got on my phone and saw DJ’s Discord. In the #announcements, he mentioned a ‘Dutchie Meetup’ and asking if anyone’s interested. It definitely has mine, that’s for sure. Asked if this was an ingame or an IRL Dutchie fursuit meetup (hey, Fur Cons happen all the time), and DJ said “ofc ingame”. Sweet. Now all you have to do is find a way to get a medium to large-sized group of people online at the same time to do it… and that’s gonna be FUUUUN!!

Currently, 6pm my time on the 25th (next Saturday) seems to be the favorite, going by a poll. Drafy feels the time should be in GMT (as it’s the universal timezone). Hopefully this pulls off and we get something going. Love to be a part of this.

‘JeroWorks’ Development

‘Unity Stuff’
Clever name for a project in Unity, huh? ..Well I think so. And the reason why I called it this, was remembering the mess of trying to put his model in my main project (due to how old the model is)…

So, why don’t I create a brand new project folder for him, move my model into it, and then do what I want and need? And that’s basically where I got the idea for JeroWorks.
Started off as a ‘simple’ toggle animation (getting the model placed was a bitch) of having him on my arm..

…and have him appear in my hand.

Recently (from the recording of talking to him), I was able to get it to say “Woah! *chuckle*” when popping the animation. I LOVE IT.. but not as much as I love him. 😉
This was ‘fun’ too when testing the avatar in a world with friends in it, not realizing Jero’s charming voice could be heard in the entire world (Kovo caught the issue for me by describing the chuckle “traveling away” from the source).
Fixed it by setting Spatial Blend from 2D to 3D… greatly reducing the range it could be heard. Heh, never intended to do that!
I also added dances to his avatar, finally doing what I said I would (this time without the ‘obsessed’ part). Really wish I could add dances to the mini-Jero, and he would dance in place on my hand. Sadly I can’t do this as a majority of the dance animations have the avatar move from its spawned point. I would have to find specific songs for that to work.

And now I’m working on a brand new JeroWorks; a 2.0 version, that contains the 1.2b Dutchie model (moving away from the modified 1.1b Dutchie model). Kovo showed proof that a 1.1b texture will work with the new 1.2b. Jero was interested in this, and how I was all “I’ll do anything for you,” I happily volunteered to do it.
And so…

But it isn’t without issues (unlike what Kovo told me), and I found three;
1. Slightly messy folder layout, the main model and its rigging was thrown into the Assets folder. Aka there’s no ‘ADModel’ folder with this one. Very thankful this is a brand new project. Eesh.
2. No idle pose/animation. Uhh… the heck, Kaelygon? Had to use the one from the modified 1.1b, though that one has the model’s head rotated to the left. Thankfully it’s a simple idle animation, so I was able to fix it.
May use BTD 4.0’s idle animation for this (as it’s public use). That’s up to Jero though.
3. A modified model for the Villar eye tracking shader, was causing an issue with the eyes that came with Kat’s ‘green white fade’ texture…

This is no bueno! I will not let my sweetheart deal with beady pupils!! 😛
So I moved the original model over, set the mesh..

“Eye see you!”
As you can… ‘see’ (oh god the puns)
Pun Bad Joke GIF - Pun BadJoke TearablePuns GIFs
I had to greatly shrink the eyes to fit with the model. Not even sure at this time that I got them properly set to the front and side shots I took above, but that’s why the avatar is a WIP. Uploaded to my account and let Jero clone it. Once I’m done with it, I’ll send everything to him.. unlike Frost.

After showing him the model, he loves it! Says it looks “more floofy” than the original.  Have to agree, even the wing feathers stand out better.
Since then I manually added puppy eyes to the ear droop animation, and now I’m finally doing something that would had never been possible without the help of Wolves.

A mini-me on his arm! 😀 Never have I been able of someone to do this, without them going through hell with all the attachments. Thanks to Wolves doing my sona ingame, this is no longer an issue.

Setting up the hand puppet animation wasn’t as quick as it was when Jero was in my
hand. Had to move the fingers around it. It also has.. heh, myself chuckling when the animation fires.
Showed him the latest changes. He loves what I’ve done and thanks me greatly. Well my love, I will accept one form of payment… if you know what I mean. 😉 Said he would love to pay it, but at the time he had too many people around (so privacy is an issue).

The model is now ready to be released (to him). Had to fix one minor issue of the emissions not showing up. Thankfully it was simple to fix by using the same settings of the 1.1b version. Cleaned up the project the best I could, then packaged it up (then threw it into a .zip). Also included is a (hopefully) easy to understand .rtf document with
pictures, explaining how to install and upload. I didn’t include the SDK, to prevent issues.
In this document, I said to “please not share my model/textures with anyone”. I highly trust him not to do so, but I said that as a very friendly reminder. I also said “if you have any requests for changes, don’t hesitate to let me know.” Said I would even help him with certain things (such as making the avatar larger).

With this done, I’m going to re-purpose the project for myself (‘updating’ the model that I have of him on my arm, and then deleting the original JeroWorks). And this is all because of how old the 1.1b model is. Not even renaming it in Blender (to prevent overriding) will allow me to easily do what I need to do, as creating a new .blend file claims there’s “not enough bones to create human avatar”.. when it’s an exact copy of the original.

The 1.1b needs to be mercy killed and cremated (for its own good). Seriously. I’ve had so many issues with this model in the past (aka BTD 3.0).
So… THANKS, UNITY!!!

‘Year of The Rat’ – Steam’s Lunar New Year sale happening now

The first new moon of 2020, brings the Lunar New Year (or ‘Chinese New Year’) in China. This year, it is the ‘Year of The Rat’.
And today, Steam celebrates by having “thousands of titles” (none in my wishlist) on sale.
As a special bonus, every day (starting now), are these things that you can open;

Opening one up awards tokens and some lore of the Lunar New Year. The tokens are used for one thing; to unlock these cute little guys (which can be used for your conversations with friends in Steam);

Design of the emojis and other illustrations, credit goes to for their wonderful art.
The sale ends on the 27th at 10am PST.

Being the Bomb ‘Expert’ and the Defuser– it’s annoying, but FUN!

Yesterday, with nothing to do in VRChat, I remembered something with that defuse world that we did– you can grab the bomb defusal manual by scanning a QR Code. This would enable me to be both the defuser and the expert.. defusing the bomb, solo.
A challenge I’m willing to try! Went there and noticed you can also grab it as a .pdf document via a tinyurl link (here). Placed it in my secondary monitor and checked it constantly.
It is really fun doing this myself, but the annoying part is looking for those two
keycards… because they keep switching positions, never in the same room. First time, it took me up to 6 minutes to find the damn things.
If we could do without the keycards (and just focus on the bomb), it would be easier.

First round, I got to Challenge 3 with 7 minutes left on the clock (being stumped for two minutes by the old Ugandan Knuckles meme as the picture. I’m pretty sure I would had defused that son of a bitch if it wasn’t for this…

..HOW?! Scrambling (and noticing I could still flip the switches), I flipped one and

WAH-Wah… (Damnit!) Looking closer at the panel on the manual..

…Are those, SCREWS I see?! Ugh! It never said “Unscrew and open the panel with the small glass window”! Whatever, I know now, but I never got that close again.

2nd round, the picture was a plunger. The word clearly had ‘6 or more characters’ in it, so I tried to look for the QR Code. Uhhh..
Where Is It Frantic GIF - WhereIsIt Frantic Distressed GIFs
WHERE’S THE QR CODE?! I frantically searched all over and inside the bomb trying to look for some kind of QR Code.. nothing!! UGH!! So I was forced to play eeny meeny miney mo of the two possible answers of the switch board of which one was the answer. Chose one..

3rd (and final) round, get all three red lights, try to cut the blue wire first..
Boom Explosion GIF - Boom Explosion GIFs
Okay, WHAT?! It specifically said..

AHHHHhhh.. wrong wire!! *facepalm*

I would’ve done a 4th round, but having to find the keycards every. single. time (how their position keeps changing every round) was taking its toll on me. I wish it was easier.
To think, this is the easiest difficulty. On the hardest, you only got 5 minutes to do it. I would assume you would need a large group to pull this off (just to find the keycards in time, let alone the bomb).

Breaking: Local derg mesmerized by fire particles

It’s a shame I can’t be all Mario and lob fireballs at my enemies. But it’s cool that I can pull flame particles out of the air and into my hands.
Harry Potter GIF - Harry Potter Lizard GIFs
So how was I able to become a dragon wizard overnight? From a fellow derg that I didn’t expect to be sending me an invite to join him (Ninja). Originally I was kind of hoping it would be something very cool (not going to say what it was as that would be part of the General blog).
Anyway, I saw him playing with particles. I’ve seen others (like Sarge) in the past and asked how they did it, but it just seemed too difficult to do. Ninja on the other hand was willing to show me how to do it, claiming it was “quite easy” to setup.
…Let’s just say it took 2+ hours until I finally got it working, and he couldn’t figure out the reason. Had everything set up, but no particles were forming. Then he sent me this video and wow did it help majorly! I had to redo the animations (as apparently they’re all set for another avatar instead of mine), and having not messed with Unity (let alone
animations) in awhile, I forgot how to do it.
The guy in the video took a step further and helped to explain just how to do it. Greatly appreciate that. And now, I can play with fire particles! Eee!

It’s really fun to manipulate them around (as I was demonstrating in the video I did). Though I kind of wish they would respond to faster movements, it’s still fun (and I love how they actually look like small fireballs in my hands).

EDIT: Ninja warned me about this particle system, how it doesn’t always work. As for
me, it falls in three categories for friends;
A: Ones that can see it perfectly.
B: Ones that can’t see it at all.
C: Ones that see it spawn in, but never appear in my hands.
As I said in one post in the General blog, I tried to show Jero the effect and he couldn’t see it. I got referred to by DG, and asked him if he knew how to fix it. Yet it was all “you’re kind of wasting your time with those old particles. The upcoming Unity 2018 update will fix that.” But you know me, I want what I have working for everyone right now.
He mentions using Final IK… then asks if I know how to use it. Told him the only time I had to, was to get dancing avatars to stay in place.
Since he doesn’t either know how to get it to work with this system, I asked if he knew anyone that does.. and he did, a girl named ‘JustRiver’. Asked him if he could speak to
her (if it’s OK for me to speak to her about this), and I got the green light.

Now talking to this person, there’s a ‘bit’ of a problem; her computer was taken away by her family (assuming she’s obsessed). She has taken tests that prove she’s not, yet her family doesn’t listen. Why is this important? ..She can’t help me (and she really wanted to). She’s also disappointed at DG for not knowing how Final IK works.
But, despite her predicament, she tried helping me by using Rigidbodies. Though at the end… sadly it didn’t work as expected (it wouldn’t let the particles go to my hands).

So, it’s something I’m gonna have to deal with ’till the Unity 2018 update (that still doesn’t have a known release date).

“A Sea Monkey’s one mission in life is to FUCK with you!” -Subnautica: Below Zero Discussion

Other witty titles against the hatred Sea Monkeys;
-“Allow me to turn the Vasper into an Ion Cannon to nuke the Sea Monkeys from orbit!”
-“Hey Sea Monkey! You want the pointy side of this knife?! TRY ME!!”
-“When you know you had a bad day: about ready to run out of oxygen, getting pelted by hail on the surface, and a Sea Monkey takes your Seaglide!”

I HATE Sea Monkeys!! I swear, they were programmed just to fuck with YOU!
But, enough about them. This is just a placement to say I’ve now been
playing Subnautica: Below Zero. And my goodness is it different than what I’ve been used to of playing the current Early Access build (November 2019). I can feel a brand new ‘risk VS reward scenario’ all over this game.
For example, trying to get Lithium in the Purple Vents and hearing these
nightmarish, dark fuckers
roaring their heads off like dragons above me. They take away nearly half health in one bite, and are FAST! I have to use my Seaglide in order to out-swim them.
I would classify them as mini-leviathans, from the way they roar (and how much damage they do).

And then there’s (what I personally call) the “red terror of the deep” that’s even faster (as fast as the player is with a Seaglide and takes 3/4 of your health away in one bite), that makes me feel so small.
I even got informally ‘introduced’ to its insides (twice) while trying to scan it…
Chelicerate Player Death
“You died and shat your pants.”

Fucking hell… NOTHING should need that many teeth!!
Okay, I can understand the devs definitely listened to the players of really wanting to be even more scared of the ocean, but what I want is for these to have a purpose for more than just scaring the shit out of the player (quite literally). For example, why.. oh fucking why, does the red terror the ‘Chelicerate’, but I prefer ‘Red Terror’) need to have so many fucking teeth?! WHY in the fuck is this thing alive?! Surely the player isn’t its only ‘meal’!

This build is obviously without its bugs (which I pray the one I found, gets fixed quite quickly). And that is with Solar Panels on a habitat. Feel like I’m the only one having this issue (which is never a good thing).
There is also other bugs I’ve encountered. For example, the supply rocket not being
there, and a certain part of the story (for some very odd reason) not being triggered, like it was removed or disabled to work on it. Though IMO it was perfect (from what I saw when IGP was doing it), and I don’t understand why it didn’t trigger.
Because of this (and the fact this ‘Base Omega’ doesn’t show a waypoint like it does finding the entrance to the Arctic Spires.. still don’t know how in the hell Sam knew you had a Seatruck and freely was all “here, have a depth module for the Seatruck I seem to know you made!”)… the game feels too unfinished (IMO) to continue playing it.
==

Yes, it’s in Early Access. Completely understandable (and I already knew this). 🙂 But, I see a troubling thing in their ‘Favro‘; according to their roadmap, it looks like they’re almost done (and we might see a release sometime this year). Yet the game doesn’t look ‘almost done’ when cutscenes aren’t happening and dialog can accidentally be skipped when sleeping.
But maybe these aren’t really game-breaking and will be fixed with time. To me, they kind of are at the time, especially with an opening of the crashed ship that I can easily swim through, but is blocked by an invisible wall.

.
Anyway, hopefully there will be an update sometime this month to grab my interest for this game again. It’s definitely different than the original Subnautica; more dialog than just with your PDA (and the player character speaks/has emotion).
This also feels like a downgrade from the original.. the map feels like a quarter the size of the original. And the zones (other than the Twisty Bridges) look.. bland and boring. Never really a fan of snow. It feels cold, and looks cold.
I hate cold. 😛 However, I really like the new weather effects (especially the white-out conditions when you can barely see anything infront of you).

But, the gamers have spoken.

WINNER of ‘Outstanding Visual Style’.… GRIS
My vote… ASTRONEER (this game still wins a place in my heart)

WINNER of ‘Best Game You Suck At… Mortal Kombat 11

What a crappy Steam Awards this was… at least Beat Saber’s not going to be voted on again in 2020. And seriously, GTA5?! Should’ve been nominated for ‘Better With
Friends’ instead, because that’s literally all it is anymore — a multiplayer DLC game!

The issues with BONEWORKS (there are many)

This was originally going to be a small section in the General blog, but it blew up into something much more (that deserved its own post). So this is going to go over the many issues I’ve seen from playing this (still $30 during the Steam Winter Sale) VR game.
Most of these things are from the ‘Runoff’ level, which introduces new enemies that want to hurt you.

1. This fucking. horrible. bane of my virtual existence hook platform puzzle, CAN GO TO HELL!!! D:{

Do NOT let its simplicity fool you! It is EVIL!! …How so? Well at first it’s pretty simple. In the picture (is a hook that’s connected to a box with a hook). The object is to get that platform to an area behind you that cannot be jumped over.
You do this with hooks that you pick off the ground and pull the platform over. Once it’s in position, you need to weigh down the platform.
…The evil part happens if you forget to flip the switch which opens a door to the outside of this room.. which is SO EASY to do, given how you cannot get back on the ledge if you fall
off, as there’s nothing to grab ahold to. If you forget to flip the switch, you also have to climb up one of the pipes.
With the official WMR bindings, this is impossible to do (because I cannot make a full fist as my virtual thumbs don’t fold in). All fingers have to be grabbing in order for the game to say “this is a grip, I will not slide the hand down the pipe”. Luckily I finally found bindings that do this.

So you finally get on the platform (which is a lot lower because of your virtual body weight). If you didn’t ‘properly’ hook up the box, the hooks will fall and the platform will float back up when you jump off of it, forcing you to climb up the pipe and hoping you can fling yourself to the other doorway.
You know what’s worse? You return to this later on as it’s connected to the exit of the level. Whoever designed it, should be slapped silly (how I have spent HOURS just trying to get past this fucking thing).

2. Having to hold the secondary trigger down when holding a weapon. Ugh.. I can feel my RL hands cramping up just thinking about it! I’m not kidding!
PLEASE.. devs! MAKE IT where we don’t have to do this all the time!! The moment I feel my finger slipping off the trigger, the gun falls to the floor. In the ‘Sewers’ level, I lost a powerful Uzi to the void (that had a flashlight attached to it) from this! Luckily I was near the end of the level.

3. When my headset loses tracking (by looking down at my dark brown carpet), the player character’s hands freak the fuck out. This is extremely annoying, especially how the game expects you to look down to grab a fresh clip in order to reload your weapon(s). Sadly this isn’t really an issue that the dev can fix.
At least make it where it’s easier to go into Inventory (for seated play) by tapping the menu button twice.

4. Aiming a rifle is so messy in WMR. You absolutely have to look down the sights, or you’d be wasting ammo– there’s no targeting reticle. In the ‘Runoff’ level, they give you an assault rifle with a laser sight in one of the crates. But I cannot see where the laser is pointing at when looking from a long range (due to my bad eyesight).
I absolutely have to have easy-to-see crosshairs when using rifles, to know where the bullets are going to go right where I want them to. So this is why I typically use a smaller 1H firearm (the pistol or the Uzi/submachine gun). I’ll even use the dual weld daggers, as they’re really good for dealing with Nullmen and wooden obstacles (including breaking ammo crates open).
I like the fact the Submachine Gun uses Pistol ammo. Makes my life easier.

5. The Reclamation chambers at the end of each level… what’s the point of them? Either way, you lose your weapons (and you don’t get them back). And if you do, they’re in the vending machines at outrageous prices (for example, 3000 ammo for the rifle with the laser sight in the ‘Runoff’ level.. WTF?!). So what is it ‘reclaiming’, when you can’t exactly get the same weapon(s) you had from the previous level? Just seems like a waste of coding.
EDIT: From what I was told, it’s weapons that you can use in the Sandbox mode.

BONEWORKS – Another ‘VR tech demo’, or the framework of The Oasis?

Let me ask you something: what do you think, when you hear the
game ‘BONEWORKS’ (and have no idea what it’s about)? Some kind an FPS game? Some kind of item manipulation game?
Well, what if I was to tell you, that’s what this game is (and it’s in VR)? And you’re probably thinking ‘great, another VR tech demo’… that is only half true, when the game uses hyper realistic physics, designed for VR users who are tired of the demos and want something fresh and new (tailored to Advanced VR users who fully understand the fundamentals of VR).

From what I’ve seen, the game takes ideas from other games (VR or not), such as Job Simulator, Portal, Half-Life 2, and SUPERHOT– throws them in a blender, hand-picks the parts they don’t want.. and turns the rest into this.
Starts off as a typical VR tech demo, but a more disturbing force is happening in the background; void energy that keeps things together in the virtual world. However, there’s been reports of leaks.
, that could be making you question… is the game world coming into the real world (and they’re opening a portal right behind you as you play it)? I still remember a part of one of the Steam videos where you hear a guy saying “they found you! The actual physical
you!!”, my mind is all OSHI–.
========================================
The game was released December 10th, and currently runs for $30. IMO, it’s worth it, and I don’t usually say that (especially for a VR game).
The game supports Seated and Standing/Room-Scale play, and supports all SteamVR-compatible headsets.

Pretty much anything you expect to happen, happens. Doors will respond to the force of your RL arms, and you can climb things.
See that brick? It feels like a brick! It throws like a brick! Even grabbing weapons are realistic, using weight and your own strength to break objects. Even hammers have piercing damage (when using their pointy bit).
The only things I will say aren’t realistic, are the way filing cabinets can easily fall down when you open the drawer. These things are made out of steel, they shouldn’t be that easy to move. Also wooden boxes don’t leave holes, even when hit with the sledgehammer.
But you got to remember, this is version 0.4 of the game. There’s more to come (collision fixes and stuff possibly). Speaking of fixes, they fixed an issue with WMR bindings (there was no official binding).
There’s been a small patch since then, so hopefully it’s fixed that issue. Haven’t had time to test it though.
