When I saw ‘RPG month’ coming from Sony, I thought “Ohh hell no…”, but surprisingly, MAGICKA 2 is actually as fun as an FPS. The only thing I didn’t like initially was how loud and badly recorded the vocal audio was in the game.
So this game takes place in a fictional land named ‘Midgard’. It involves a group of multi-colored wizards (called the ‘Noble Order of Magick’ living in ‘Castle Aldrheim’. The wizards were trained in all the possible Magic schools (such as Fire/Water/Earth/Air, etc..)

They were also the ‘good guys’, defending the populace of this land against monsters, doing quests, and even saving their world at times. Due to this, they wanted to expand their empire (and their knowledge of magic).
But one day, a great evil managed to sneak into the castle and made the Wizards turn on eachother, nearly wiping them all out. Some of the ones that remained (who were revived after dying countless times) were reduced to blabbing idiots and forgotten by the ones that still had their sanity.

Due to the ‘Wizard Wars’ as it was called, this actually helped the humans living here even more, as their ‘helpers’ weren’t accidentally frying them trying to kill the goblins, and allowed mankind to flurish.
However, the seers of the land saw something, especially one named “Nostrir the Soothsayer’, who saw a vision of a female wizard that was born during the chaos of the Wizard Wars, and is said to have all Magic powers to possibly save the world when she comes to age. The thing is, he didn’t know where this girl was.

Unfortunately, a great evil called the ‘Shadow’, was preparing to make sure this girl wouldn’t realize her potential. And by doing so would send the world into darkness. So a Vampire named “Vlad” was forced to come back from his four decade vacation, to seek four brave Wizards that survived the Wizard Wars, who vowed to find this girl and protect her, to save the world.

You (and your RL friends can) play as one of these wizards. During the prologue/tutorial, you learn all of your magical abilities. Some abilities can simply be used by your four ‘X’, ‘Circle’, ‘Triangle’, and ‘Square’ buttons. While others require you to hold down L1.
You can charge up an ability to five for most magic. Each one helps to increase its strength.
But what I like about the game, is you can also combine abilities and make some really cool combos. Such as you can combine Water and Earth to make a boulder out of water. Or combine Lightning and Fire to make lighting that can catch enemies on fire as well. But you need to be careful, as certain spells counter others, such as you can’t use Earth with Lightning. You’ll know you can’t when one of the balls disappears. Seriously, have fun experimenting different combos!

Note that these abilities will drain after a certain time (or if you let go of your right stick), especially when you use them on your sword. You will need to re-enchant it everytime you hit something.

Later in the tutorial, you can also enchant your sword with the same abilities. You can have a flaming sword, a water sword… whatever you wish. This is so fucking cool!
Another thing you can do are called “super spells”. Here, you can use things such as “Haste” to make yourself faster. You have to conjure the spell in a specific way to do the effect. There’s no ‘get it wrong = death’ thing, by the way.
You also have access to quick-spell the abilities by using your D-Pad, once you have mastered the ability. There are four total Super Spell abilities.

So once the prologue is over, you’re pretty much on your own. You see a group of humans. You can choose to murder everyone. YES! If you’re feeling evil, you can murder everyone! It’s even more gory if you kill people with the Death spell.

I love this game to bits. Hard to believe from an RPG, let alone one on a console. It’s time for the review. I just need to conjure it up here… *lights people on fire* whoops!! That wasn’t it! .. Ah, here we go! Figured it out!;

Good
-Really, really fun for an RPG.
-You can learn your own combos. You’re not restricted to the ones the game teaches you.
-The ‘Death’ spell is just so gory. And when used with the sword, it’s often a one-hit kill (even a multi-kill if you get enemies to group around you). I love it!

Bad
-Bad voice-overs, especially the narrator. I had to mute them and do my own voice-overs for the video.
-Can’t set trees on fire. 😛
-Game bugs you everytime to login with a Paradox account before playing.

Final Review: Definitely try this out if you love “fuck with” games. It’s free this month for the PS4. So if you have one, download it.
