Getting my feet (and everything else) wet in Subnautica

Ok, wow.. that title sounded wrong. What I meant to say, is jumping into water and all my player’s skin is wet.. not, the other thing. I’m not gay, damnit!!
Everyone else: It’s alright, Benie. What you do in your private time isn’t our business.
…..
Right, let’s get this going. To hopefully get my mind back to a more stable level, I’m playing Subnautica; something I haven’t played in ages, because back then, there was no endgame after getting the Cyclops sub.
I actually wanted to play the Below Zero DLC. But sadly, the devs are doing the same thing that happened with TESO, and the Morrowind DLC; listing it as ‘standalone’ content, apparently lets them ignore the whole debate of paying for a game and expecting to get everything.
Except, this is different. This is its own game. Infact, it doesn’t even show as DLC. It’s more like the next chapter (like The Elder Scrolls series). ..But since this is about the main game only, I won’t be arguing anymore about it. Might make it into another post, who knows. I’ll let you folks decide.

So anyway, I’m currently in the very early stages of the game (just got the Seaglide unlocked). Getting what was ‘Crash Powder’ (now known as ‘Cave Sulfur’) was a pain in the ass, just to get the Repair Tool made, so I can get my lifepod fixed and start receiving messages. I also got the scanner, and have been scanning everything I see.
I also got the first message from the Sunbeam. Sadly from watching IGP, I know what happens to it later on. Hopefully I can get there before that event starts, not to mention hope to cure my disease before it’s too late.
Can’t wait to play more. And when I complete the game, I’ll play some ASTRONEER.

ASTRONEER is officially released! / Rolling Line’s development looking awesome!

It’s been awhile since I talked about gaming news (that doesn’t have to do with VRChat, or another single game) in here.
First off, yesterday, ASTRONEER’s 1.0 release actually happened as expected. I haven’t checked it out yet, and by all means.. this isn’t the end of development (going by their Trello page). There will be post 1.0 updates, but it doesn’t show a quarter of when they’ll come.

In other news, development on Rolling Line is looking extremely interesting…
Here are a few pics of the Rolling Line Discord server’s announcements channel, where the dev can show pictures of what’s to come.
And today’s news, holy fuck I lost my mind…

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! AUTOMATED TRAINS!! HYPE HYPE HYPE!!
This is absolutely fantastic news. Such a great start, which I hope will come with the ability of trains stopping automatically, to allow another automated train to pass by safely.
Can’t wait ’till the next update. I am so hyped for this.

And that’s all the news I have for you.

More bug testing/fixing with BTD

Oh look, yet another bug report for BTD. Honestly, I wish I could stop making these. But Unity won’t stop fudging up my plans. One of these bugs I recently noticed.. don’t even know how nor when it started (because it only happens ingame), but I do know how it can be fixed. However, that fix might make texturing this certain thing, impossible.

Anyway, there’s four bugs I’ve noticed. Let’s get to them, shall we?
BUG #1: Eye tracking shader acting like a mirror on certain worlds.
STATUS: Squished
But actually there’s a bit more than this. I actually got the help I so desperately needed. Went to the gang, showed Azure (the one that told me about the eye shader and how it works without needing Blender), and she started laughing hysterically. Then it’s like everyone’s staring at me, and I’m all “don’t look at me, I’m ugly!!” Heheheh.
Sarge is the one that gave me the help I needed (in a sense). Basically, he told me where I had been screwing up (and telling me to make an emission for it), but that’s about it. He had me figure out the rest on my own. And in ways, I’m glad he did. Because I learned a lot, just by playing around. When I’m desperate enough to know how something
works (and feel it’s doable), I will eventually learn how to do it. Those specific conditions have to be met.
And this is the result;

Though I no longer get that cool “I stare at you” look, the eyes definitely look a lot better when you stare at it from the front! On top of it, I finally figured out how to remove the reflection. It was the cubemap causing it, so I created my own. Easier than I thought, too.

BUG #2: Firebreath emote not working with a fixed joint.
STATUS: (Finally) squished!
What I thought was “so easy” to fix, turned out to be a bug that I had to beg for help from the VRChat Discord. Though the animation itself wasn’t the issue, the fixed joint was.
During the testing (the same time I was testing the eyes), I had noticed the firebreath not exactly at the avatar’s mouth.. but on the floor and at an angle.
For the longest time, I was perplexed of the reason why the Fixed Joint script wasn’t allowing me to set it to the Head. I finally fixed this by forgetting the head bone, needs its own RigidBody script for the fixed joint to ‘latch onto’.
Yet the firebreath emote still wasn’t showing up at the mouth. Even the VRChat Discord couldn’t figure it out. Later on (finally), the solution revealed itself; it was the placement of the GameObject. It has to be at the bottom of the avatar, to serve as an ‘anchor’ for the particle system.
For the longest time, I thought it had to be where the particle system was (as that made sense to me). But Unity, makes no sense! lol..
Whatever!! It works now! God DAMN you Unity, sometimes. 😛

BUG #3: Right hand claws can be seen through.
STATUS: Squished
This was a rather interesting bug. Left hand, looked perfectly fine.
Right hand? Different story.

Looking directly at the claws, I see a hole. Clearly there’s a texture issue. Yet looking at the sheets, I didn’t see an issue. See how interesting it was to fix?
The solution might surprise you;

This is the Body mesh of the avatar. Controls what textures will show. And for some reason, there’s four of them. Why..? Hell if I know, I’m not Kaelygon. But apparently I have to have all four, in order to even get the claws to show up. That is utterly stupid.
But, whatever. And the reason the right hand’s claws were one-sided, is the bottom two were using the standard FlatLitToon shader (instead of Naito’s scale shader).
#KaleygonLogic

BUG #4: Fake Dutchie tail not connecting to real tail in worlds, yet works in Unity
STATUS: Unknown…
This here is the biggest bug, and was referenced at the top of this post. As stated, it works fine in Unity. But ingame…

Sorry for the dark images, I was in the world ‘The Box’ when seeing if this issue was only on one world. That world is named ‘Moody’, where I first noticed the bug.
The problem is the fake tail’s not attached to the real tail. Again, it’s working fine in Unity, and it also works fine (ingame) with BTDB.
At first, I thought I was the only one seeing this issue. I literally had to ask others to look, and they too saw it, confirming it’s not just me.
One told me “it’s a Rigidbody”, which got me thinking if this would be similar to the thing that makes the firebreath emote work with the fixed joint. I personally don’t think it’s going to work, but it’s worth a shot.

.
And that’s all the known bugs with this model. So far, 3 of the 4 have been squished. Once every single bug is squished (and I’m satisfied with the results), I’ll likely be replacing BTDB with this.

More BTD talk: Getting the fixed model & custom eye tracking shader

This is a small continuation from that ridiculously long blog post. And the only reason it was so long, was from all the pictures I showed.
Erodac finished work on the fixed Dutchie model and sent it to me. It’s as I wanted it. But, I will be be getting to this in just a bit.
The other (shorter) thing I want to talk about, I finally found out where Sarge, Nappz, and the others got the cool eye tracking thing for their Dutchies (called ‘Vilar’s Eye Tracking Shader‘). However, application is something I’m still waiting for an answer to. It shows that I have to do it in Blender (though it does give a tutorial)… but I’m not 100% sure if this shader can be used for the Dutchie (due to the size of the eye).
Been asking in a patient manner all day, to anyone that has the shader (and would respond to my request for knowledge). Most of them say it was done for them (who I would assume Nappz, he’s a miracle worker).
His girlfriend (AzureFox) came through for me again, the following day of the posting of this blog post. She was the one that told me I could put the Dutchie tail on a Best Boi (without using Blender).
She said yes, this is the shader. She also said that she heard someone say it costed $60. Think someone confused it for something else, because I’m seeing no price tag. Anyway, she says that I don’t have to use Blender to do this. However, it’s still a viable option. The other option is to erase the eye in both left and right texture sheets. Yet she claims the Blender option is ‘easier’. Huh.
Once either are done, drag the shader to the scene, parent them to the Head bone (not the Eye bones), then size them to my liking. The shader has additional features, such as simulated eye tracking, and an iris that can contract and expand under certain conditions.
Very nice. I’ll mess with this at a later date. I got more important things to deal with…

Which brings us back to the main event: the fixed Dutchie model for BenieTheDragon. Erodac put it in a .unitypackage file instead of just sending me the .blend file. Because of this, it wanted to overwrite the default model. I tried everything I can think of to prevent this, but it always sniffed it out. Soon I realized “wait, he could had just sent me the model.”
Really wish I thought of that before. Did get the file I needed. Went in Unity and was about to do what I said I was going to do, then seeing something that my jaw hit the floor in shock.
Something that has taken me two days to work on, has been replaced with ‘Missing prefab (Dummy)’ for every bone. Every. Fucking. Bone in the hierarchy, replaced with this missing prefab thing. And all of the attachments, were in strange positions.
It was like the avatar had collapsed into itself, and created a singularity (with the missing prefabs).

I just turned, something that would had only taken me.. 15-30 minutes to do, to.. NOTHING!!

But, I did fix it, in a sense. My project file now has a bug, all because I didn’t want to overwrite the default Dutchie model.
The only way that Unity (and the SDK) are allowing a fix, is to allow the default Dutchie model to be in the folder it was originally created (the Assets folder, instead of mine). Attempting to move it to my custom folders, causes the issue with the ‘missing prefab’ crap. Think it might be because it’s a model that was made with the old Unity version (and hasn’t been updated since).
Have to go with it. And after some time, I was able to re-attach all the attachments to the new model as close to what I remembered.
What a mess.. but I dug through it. Uploaded just fine, going to be testing as soon as I finish this post up.

Testing complete. It works! Am noticing an issue with the firebreath animation not playing. But I’m pretty sure I know the reason for this, and it’ll be fixed.
And the one that helped me with the texturing (who knows what my sona looks like), asked “are you going to add ears to it eventually?”
*deep sigh*… Look, I get it, it’s based off of the Dutchie, and the Dutchie have ears. But what part of ‘custom designed model’ do they not understand!?
My sona’s ears, are on the back of his head (but invisible). DEAL WITH IT!! Geezus!
On one hand, I shouldn’t let this bother me and continue on. On the other, I just wish people would accept my attempt for being as close to my sona as possible (without Blender knowledge).
Wish I could meet the unknown creator of that gif art, that became my scalesona (if they’re even still alive at this point), and ask them “why didn’t you add ears?” Then I could refer their answer to all the people questioning.

.
Meh. Going to continue as planned: fix the firebreath emote, try to get this eye tracking shader installed and working, then make several different versions of the avatar (much like I did for BTDB and Red Boi). For the 3rd thing, I’ll likely delete all the IDs for Red Boi (again), to make room for this one. Though I’m unsure if I should just flat out replace BTDB with this. If only I could have BTDB’s eyes, but with BTD’s long nose. Then it’ll be even closer to my sona.
But first, I really should take a closer look at my project folder. With the issue of the model being in a different location than where it needs to be (in order to work), I can’t really trust my plans working as expected.
I need to create a new one, which (should) undo this mess… I hope. If it really is the age of the model causing the issue, it would only happen again (even with a new project folder).
But in any case, I need to do some spring cleaning on the folder– deleting unused assets/scripts/textures, should (in theory) make Unity a bit faster when loading.

An update. Cleaned up the project folder as good as I could. A lot of unused materials, and mistakenly deleting the Plugins folder (that the VRCSDK needs). Thankfully at the time, I hadn’t cleaned out the recycle bin, and managed to restore that folder.
Just over 100 items (about 1.7GB) was removed from the Assets folder. And as for if Unity is faster, well.. I think I shaved a few seconds off of load time. Not bad.

As for the firebreath animation being broken, it was kind of what I was thinking. The particle system was in a different location, but it also said one of the two Skinned Mesh Renders was missing; the ‘AntiBlep’ one (removes the tongue from showing up when doing the firebreath). And it definitely is. Not to mention the one that tells the jaw to open up, also wasn’t there. Yet somehow the animation says it still exists.
Not sure why. But, whatever. I’m fine without it. The tongue can be made fireproof.

Now as for the eye tracking shader… since Blender looks like a complete mess when trying to load up the custom Dutchie model, I’ve decided to go with the texture route.
Though the Blender part of the tutorial looks quite helpful, the Unity part of it.. not so much. But I followed what it said, parenting them to the eyes. Though I’m confused why it said that each eye needs to have its own texture. I mean, sure, if you wanted one eye as a different color. But if you want both eyes to use the same texture, then I don’t see the point.
Speaking of texture, I made my own based on what I’ve seen the others use; a black iris but with the actual eyeball in a blue color (to hopefully mask with the color of the texture).
So yeah… it took awhile to get them installed. Scaling them, making sure they looked realistic in their respected blue eye holes. Using this script that uses the mesh of determining how they’ll look (with eye tracking, something I’m pretty sure WMR isn’t capable of doing).
But… this is the (rather creepy) result..

The “I will stare into your soul” illusion is absolutely creepy and awesome at the same time. Not to mention, the phrase ‘devilishly handsome’ comes to mind.
Looking at him from the front, though…

I mean.. they’re …not ‘bad’, but they’re not good either. Though, they are correctly sized, since I used the Dutchie’s default iris to scale it (0.07 incase you’re interested).
But something just bugs me about them, and I think it’s the forced reflection that I can’t seem to get rid of. Because, they look nothing like what I saw of the others having.
*sigh* I wish Nappz would actually talk to me, so I could get this done the correct way. But, I’m gonna have to deal with it. If anyone says anything, I’ll just tell them that I didn’t have him to help me. Maybe that person knows how to do it. Who knows.

The Dutchie’s texture sheet is super complex!

I decided to take a looksie at the Dutchie texture sheet in FireAlpaca, just to see what I have to work with. And wow, it’s harder than I thought it would be. Take a look;

Now, take a look at the default BBP texture sheet as a comparison;

Yes, there are certain similarities (such as the face). But what’s throwing me off, is the default Dutchie texture has three main colors (instead of orange and black, of the default Best Boi).
The orange and black, clearly mark a Best Boi’s body parts. The Dutchie however, its colors are all over the place! ARGH!
Though the above would not even be a problem, if both texture sheets were similar in placement. I would had saved so much time and effort by simply copy/pasting my texture over.. but noooo.

*sigh* …Oh well. There’s no point in bitching about it. And since Flowburn (the one that made the original BTDB texture) clearly isn’t going to help me (by not even responding to my simple request), I’m going to have to do the ole ‘mark things with different colored lines to see where I need to texture’ tactic, in order to see what parts I need to add the scaled chest.
But that’s not the only parts I need to focus on. The eyes and the lower jaw are also important. Including removing the ears. I’m also going to make three additional layers in the sheet’s .psd file for toggling the ears, wings, and the chest floof.
And this is what I initially have, using a mixture of GIMP and FireAlpaca to do specific things.
|

Update 1: Lower jaw has been textured (not fully), snout holes have been added, and the nose’s bridge has four black dots on the sides (as my scalesona has). I plan to have the jaw texture go into the upper jaw in a circle, around the mouth.

Update 2: Ears have been removed. Noticing bits of where the ears are (even though I made sure to delete everything around the ear area of the sheet). Currently trying to fix them.

Update 3: MAJOR bug with the back and top of the head. I don’t know what the hell happened, but I’m seeing this now…
It’s like I’m actually performing surgery on a Dutchie.

Two hours later, I was no closer to fixing the problem. Ending up giving in and going back to VRChat, and try to get someone to help with it tomorrow.
Showed it to someone, who said “that’s where the head fluff used to be, you’ll need to use Blender to remove it and it should fix the problem”. Ugh. Having to use Blender. Ugh.
Thankfully someone else came to my rescue, using Photoshop and managing to seal up the ‘cut’.
Discovered the cause of the issue. Those floating bits and pieces I chopped out of the alpha channel (thinking they weren’t being used for anything important)? …They were actually important to the texture! Huh. Never would had known.
Also, the floating bits, I still feel I’ll need Blender experience (which I lack) to get them out. Likely going to need help with that. So, I’ll continue to texture the model.

Update 4: …I am officially clueless on what the fuck happened with the sheet. Thinking I could simply take the working .psd I got help with, and paste it over the broken one (to fix it).. it doesn’t want to be fixed. The FUCK DID I DO to it?!
Well, this just goes to show, that backups are extremely important in cases like
this (which, I’ll admit.. I haven’t been doing). But that’s going to change.
Thankfully I was able to move the claws over to the working copy, and now Future BTD has claws again!

Now, I was planning to work on the pain in the ass(the scaled chest) today, but luck is on my side as the guy that helped me yesterday, is willing to help again with that. Infact he’s going to do the rest of the texturing work for me, mainly because of this very scaled chest, he has to make two texture sheets for the left and the right.
This also makes the blue pokadots more randomized. At this same time, I asked Erodac if he could do the whole Blender part (to physically remove the Dutchie body parts I removed via editing the texture), and he’s doing that as well.

Several hours later…
The texturing IS DONE!! 😀 I also got the custom designed Dutchie mesh! And it removes the floating bits! WOOT!

It looks absolutely handsome, just like my sona. Can’t thank that guy enough. And with this done, the rest is up to me. And copy/pasting BTDB’s horns, wings and fake tail, should be easy enough.
However, all is not good (at this time). I mean, I can still add the attachments and call it a day, but I’ll have to still use the original Dutchie mesh. Because this new mesh, doesn’t have the original’s Visemes. And trying to cheat by saying “here they are, use the original!”… sadly it doesn’t work like that. It’s just like an animation. If it’s not set to the avatar you’re currently using, it won’t work. But at least making animations isn’t anything like trying to mess with Blender.
Erodac will try to take care of this, but not right now. So for the time being, I’ll do the attachments and use the default Dutchie mesh. Because it’s better than nothing. 🙂 And when I get the fix, I can simply transfer the attachments over.

—————
New month, new update.

It looks absolutely adorable, like something you could hug…
Changes;
-All attachments are on. All I need to do is set up the eye beams and get the proper firebreath going, then finally the Dynamic Bones for the wings, and the avatar will be DONE!! 😀
-Used Naito’s scale texture. Didn’t cover the chest this time, since the red tint kind of ruins the realism.
-Made the eyes brighter, to be closer to my sona.
Everything should be done in the afternoon. Hopefully by then, I’ll have the fixed mesh. Going to test him out ingame.

So, it’s the afternoon. I’ve had, well.. not the best results from last night (a half an hour before I went to bed). One friend looked at me and said “benie your ears are gone”. Another started laughing, but it wasn’t about the model (just my lack of awareness).
Meh, whatever. I’m not going to let them deter me. The fact I like it, that’s all it
matters, right? …Right!
Also, I might not get that fixed Dutchie mesh from Erodac anytime soon. Told me he’ll try to get it done today, as he’s dealing with other things. But, no rush. Let the guy take his time.
Most of today, I’ve been taking a break from it (since it’s nearly done). But I’ll be doing the finishing touches this evening.

Update: Animations are nearly done. All there’s left to do is set the dynamic bones for the wings, and the avatar will be completed.
Though, I decided to say “no” to the eye beams, and this is due to WMR not giving me the option to toggle an emote on/off (you can only do this in Desktop mode). Really getting tired of this BS.

However I have another issue that needs addressing ASAP. Unlike copying Inspector settings from one scene to another, copying animation files doesn’t work as you expect it to. An animator controller will continue to use its assigned animation file, nomatter where it is. The only way to preserve it, is to recreate the animation.
And… I completely fucking forgot about it when I overwrote BTDB’s wing animation with the Dutchie one. On top of that, I also have to re-add the firebreath particle (because I stupidly overwrote that as well).. another reason why I was putting off with adding the Dutchie tail to the BBP model.
I’m just glad I was able to (barely) recreate the firebreath, without getting on my hands and knees begging for help of the one that managed to (a long time ago) get the particle working. It’s not perfect, but it’ll do.

You probably notice the flame is no longer purple in areas. I swapped the broken Dutchie flame textures with ones I got from various prop packs I have (that have fire textures). And it works!
So after I undo these user fuckups with BTDB, the thing I’m working on now should be completed.

—————

This will likely be the final update, in the longest blog post I have ever made since starting blogs.
But… it. is. DONE! 😀 The avatar is ready! And like I said, when I get the fixed mesh, I’m pretty sure I can simply transfer the attachments over without any issue.
I also (finally) fixed the two fuckups with BTDB. Getting the wings to use the correct animation file, I was having that issue where the settings kept defaulting to their previous state. Ended up deleting and re-adding the wings.
So I can only assume they were still using the old animation, which could had been the reason it was preventing me from setting them.

Doing surgery on a grap– model, in Unity?! One says yes (and other stuff)

A few new things have popped up since I made that post. Usually VRChat isn’t that interesting for me. Though, that’s mainly because I had restricted myself to private and Friends+ worlds (over the fear of having my avatar stolen).
Understandable, right? Well, this is no longer the case (how one can clone someone’s public avatar). And the true beauty of VRChat comes though in these worlds. Such as this disturbing thing of a bunch of guys as spiders in The Pug;

How I missed this craziness when I was on Desktop. I was lucky enough to not overly lag in VR.

Anyway, time to talk about what has happened recently. First off, a bit of happy news for a new couple. Klaus officially has a girlfriend, who’s name ingame is ‘MelBlueyes’ (nice name). I’m extremely happy for them, while also at the same time… *sigh* You know. A bit saddened I still haven’t found an RP girlfriend. But at the same time, I don’t want to feel tied down by one.
Plus, who would want someone that bitches about things they can’t control? ..Exactly.

Speaking about things I can’t control, someone called me a “Best Boi reject” last night. I sort of know their name, but unfortunately there’s no ‘Blocked Users’ option to get the name.
Basically what happened, I visited Sarge and the others only to ask one of them a specific question (related to what I said yesterday about BTDB). A long time ago, this person managed to chop off the Dutchie tail and glue on the Best Boi one. I want to do this in reverse, but only for this model.
Then I get distracted by someone asking “where’s the Best Boi’s?!?!” Showed mine, then this person walked up, pointing at me and laughing, saying “this is a Best Boi reject!!”
That really hurt, even though I tried my best to not let it bother me. And I love how none of them defended me. Though, I’m just going to assume that they just didn’t hear it (or were too busy talking to eachother infront of another mirror).
Well, I got someone willing to show the blocked person that I’m no reject. All I need to do is just find this guy again and give them their name.

In addition, the guy willing to set the other one straight, pretty much told me what I already know (about having someone make my own BenieTheDragon model). He said that yeah, it would cost hundreds of dollars. But he said that I have to talk to someone about it.
I dunno, though. Would be nice, but… mmm. It’s good to pay for someone’s effort, but the fact they take advantage of people like me. Yeah.
Just don’t want to be taken advantage of, and be charged a ridiculously high price for a model that may or may not look anywhere close to the picture.

And this leads me to the final topic of discussion.. the whole tail thing. Decided to ask the original person I was going to ask (in Discord), and they responded “I just used Unity”.
The.. fuck?! Are you serious? I can preform surgery on a model in Unity? How in the fuck, is that possible? Don’t you need Blender for that?
Turns out you don’t. You first grab the model you want and attach it to the model you want to replace it with, then take the texture of the first model (the Dutchie) in GIMP and erase everything but the tail.
Then you do the reverse with the Best Boi (removing only the tail), and finally you resize the model to make it fit with the one you’re trying to replace.
And this is the result (after painting the new tail;

Voyalia! Dutchie tail on a Best Boi! Yes, the spikes are floating of where the tail was, and.. I don’t know what I’m going to do (as I have to have the spikes as they’re part of my scalesona).
But I’m also looking at this;

Staring at it for the longest time, I could feel a sense of calm that I’ve never felt before, since the Dutchie started becoming popular. I had just took a Dutchie, attached it to my beloved BTDB, to give it a tail closer to my scalesona. And it works ingame; like an attachment.
Seeing the wings (missing), and remembering the person that says I could do it in Unity also saying that you can hide the horns on the head and nose (in Unity).. what’s there to stop me from finally making this into a custom built ‘Dutchie’? Is it time to finally let go of the pride I’ve bottled up for months?
Yes. Yes it is. But it isn’t just the model, but what I was told about my scalesona (that it’s not supposed to be a Best Boi). It’s like, he saw through my pride and managed to pierce it with something… something ‘warm’ and ‘comforting’ that I’ve never felt for a long time.
But due to the texture sheet being completely different from the Best Boi Phoenix model, I might do it this weekend (as I’ll have to recreate the texture from scratch).

But let’s get back to the now: the tail spike issue. It still needed to be dealt with.
Manually placing one on the new tail, isn’t doing the ‘it’s too heavy’ thing as the Best Boi tail has. But, it isn’t working like I want to. It flops around instead of being ‘glued’ to the tail. And the only way I can have the results I want, is to contact Erodac and ask him if he doesn’t mind doing what he did those months ago. Aka, taking the fake tail and extending it with more spikes.

And luck was in my favor. He was willing to do it. I gave him the files that he gave me, and with a bit of a back and forth image troubleshoot sharing, I finally have it!

It looks awesome! So much better and closer to my scalesona than the Best Boi tail. I also wanted to chop off the diamond-shaped part of the tail, and make it straighter. Doing it in GIMP and using Naito’s scale shader, causes a hole in the middle of the diamond.

The fuck is going on.. this isn’t what I wanted! The only thing I can think of, it’s the way the texture map was done for the Dutchie. Going to have to talk to Nappz one of these days, and see if he knows how to take care of this …though I fear ‘Blender’ is the only option he’ll give me (as he has a different tail shape).
So, I’m possibly stuck with it. Also finally set the tail for the other sized versions of BTDB. Took some time for the Giant and Dragon-Sized ones (with the chairs), and had to use actual chairs to re-set the settings.
Testing it ingame (an hour before I went to bed, as the whole chairs thing made me not want to work on it), some people say it does look a lot better than what I had. Definitely agree. Just hope this stops anyone from calling BTDB a ‘Best Boi reject’.

.
To close this out, I have also finally re-uploaded Red Boi (including its own Giant and Huge versions). Nearly didn’t come true at one time, with Unity constantly hanging at ‘Processing upload…’.
Turns out I simply forgot to delete the old IDs for the avatars. Trying to upload, looking up the ID, fails to see it, gets stuck in an infinite loop.
Freeing the ID, it knows there’s no existing ID and creates a new one, completing the upload. Wish the SDK would had told me this, though..

Messing with chairs / Meeting the creator of the HDS

So many things that have happened in VRChat, since I came back to it after Warframe burned me. Also, thanks so much for the continued support, with emails stating to wait for a sale of SUPERHOT VR, saying it’s rather short. Given the VR games I’ve played so far, most of them have been (even the ones with a pricetag).
It’s like, they can’t really go that far when it comes to a VR game (compared to a regular Desktop game). But, I keep forgetting that VR is still new, and it’ll still take many more years until devs really notice the true potential of it.

Speaking of VR– VRChat. As stated, a lot has happened (that wasn’t just of Creepery temporarily leaving the game). Some of it is a bit more personal (and also having to help a friend with another friend).
Let’s stop stalling and get to it…
First off, chairs- aka the ‘VRC_Station’ script. Having never added chairs to any of the avatars I’ve uploaded (as at the time when they showed up as a glitch, I was still pretty much a n00b at Unity), I went through hell figuring out why things weren’t working right. For the chairs were working, but working wrongly.
Basically, I have five chairs for the Dragon-Sized version of BTDB (one on my head, one on each horn, and one on both hands). Trying it out in various worlds, lots of people complaining they were able to get on them from the other side of the world.
It wasn’t until Foley revealing the reason why. The script is basically an invisible VRCChair. And this poses a problem.. as being invisible, I wasn’t aware that chairs automatically scale themselves when placed on an avatar (as the only times I used a VRCChair was for my worlds).
Spawning in a chair and placing it, holy fuck did I see the issue!! The chair, was HUGE! No wonder people are able to click on it! Scaled the scripts down to a level where this is no longer a problem. I also used the chair to properly orient the script, to get the direction that I wanted to see people sitting.
Testing it ingame, the set orientation still doesn’t work 100% (they don’t look at me when they pop on my hand, but at least there’s no more complaints about accidentally misclicking and appearing on my head anymore! Yay for that!
The Giant version of BTDB also has chairs now. Just still need to work on the orientation of the script (some people are saying “I’m sideways” when on my head).
I do plan to get Red Boi re-uploaded (after doing the same changes I made for BTDB).

Hanging out with Creepery’s friends. They’re a lot more fun to hang out with then Sarge, L1ch, and the others (who talk about real life infront of a mirror for hours). These guys, love to RP and play games. And sometimes the RP is quite believable. Just like the day after Creepery left, I saw two Nappies. One of them wasn’t doing what the other was, so obviously one of them was Melancholy.

And… *cough* what an ‘interesting’ show they did, hugging, kissing, and then fighting eachother. It was so hilarious. Got lots of pictures with my VR camera. Some of which I never took.. heh.
Anyway, back to Creepery’s friends. They even have a ‘leader’ of sorts, named ‘Marble_Hornet’. And last night, was a very interesting night. Started off with a fierce argument between her and Chris, over something that happened a long time ago. I wanted to know what was going on, but I never really got a chance.
Ended up with Chris attempting to defuse the situation, by being an adult and saying it happened in the past. Then the two ran off to talk in private (and never came back).
Half an hour later, we went to another world. This was a quite interesting world, with an actual working bar. You can pour your own drink into a glass, and then drink it. You can also grab drinks in cans and use your other hand to pull the tap and open the can.
It felt like Taphouse VR to me. Sadly, you can’t mix drinks (like you can in that game).

Later that night (after drinking), Marble started being obsessive over wanting her (I would assume RP) husband to join. Apparently her husband is Mr Husky, who I know quite well from the days of the Best Boi community. Suddenly Marble accuses Chris of “taking my husband” and starts chasing him through the world, making hilarious angered noises.
Most of us are assuming that she’s “a little drunk”, either in RL or ingame (aka more RP, why I said how the ‘RP is quite believable’). Which makes me wonder, if this marriage to Husky is also truthful or not. But, that’s none of my business to ask about that.

Ashi gets more active, and the battlelines are drawn. This has been going on for a few days even before I took my break from Warframe. Apparently, he now has a mod that gives him moderator powers, with one thinking he might be able to visit private worlds without being invited (or being your friend).
Of course, if he does (and is caught by an actual admin).. oooooh hoo hoo hoo! No more Ashi. 😀 Let’s pray he fucks up.

Wildboy VS Rezzonance. More drama, this time it has nothing to do with RP. A day ago, Wildboy DMs and asks me to talk to Rez about why he was blocked by him. I’m not sure what’s going on, but I will agree that Wildboy is kind of a spaz.. doing weird shit like making noises by beating the sides of his mouth. So, yeah. A bit immature.
Now I’m hearing that Wildboy is stalking Rez’s twitter feed (and everywhere else), and the others like Sarge agree. But Wildboy denies these accusations, calling them complete bullshit.
My guess, he’s been asking everyone to talk to Rez about unblocking him. They all say no, so he comes to me. And they see this as stalking. *sigh* And this just randomly popped into my mind. I have no proof that he was actually doing this, nor do I have proof that he never did it. But from the words I get from Sarge (and Rez himself), it almost feels like this is true.
It got to the point where I was forced to tell Wildboy, to let it go. He wasn’t bugging me, by the way. I really wanted to help him out, because I try (when I can) to be a nice guy. It was Rez’s own words that convinced me, that this is only going to end in a stalemate. It was clear, he was done talking about it and wanted to move on, so I told him that I would drop the subject. And thankfully, Wildboy finally listened to reason.
Again, I have no way to prove his denials (as I wasn’t there when it happened). It disappoints me that I couldn’t help him out, but I’m also glad that I can put this behind me.
UPDATE: Major update after saying this. Here I thought Rezz was going to drop it, only to invite me to a world to personally ask if Wildboy has been driving me crazy.
I wanted this foolishness to end, so I tried to stick these two in a group chat. It would had worked, but Rezz didn’t want to play ball.
…Nearly lost a lot of my friends trying to convince him to join while ingame. I came too close, but just let my frustration over this, go to them. And they completely understood me. I never wanted to be a part of this mess.. I don’t even know how in the fuck it started.
Close to blocking Wildboy for the hell I just went through. He won’t even give me an apology. …That kid needs to understand when no means no, and when to move on He’s 16, but he should be mature enough to know who will and won’t be your friend.
I… whatever. I’m trying to get this traumatic experience out of my head. Shivers me everytime I think about it.

–Meeting OfficialSayon, creator of the legendary Huggi Dungeon Series(HDS). This was an absolute honor, and it almost didn’t happen. There was a time I was soooo bored and was thinking of going to bed (at 3 in the morning). My left eye was sleepy, my head was sleepy, it was not a fun morning for me.
Then I decided to visit Klaus in this rather interesting concept of a world, that has a room that you can mess with weather, cause it to rain, and it will actually flood the room with water (in realtime). He was by himself, and he just so happened to say “this just might be your lucky night, Benie”, telling me that I just might be meeting the creator of the HDS.
He then gets an invite to join him in a private world, and asks me to join. I do, and meet him.
It was pretty awesome. I even got to talk to a future voice actor of the upcoming Part 3, who asked me who’s my favorite character. Though my personal favorite is Huggi (because of how I felt she was well developed as a character in Part 2), I ‘had’ to pick Alex, or I would ‘die’. Heh.
I was then invited to join a world to test his latest creation, called ‘VRC – Deadzone’.
It’s mainly a PvP world, based on his love for eSport PvP. It currently has three game modes (with more coming);
-Team Deathmatch (self-explanatory)
-CTF (self-explanatory)
-The Glitch (one person hunts down the others)
There’s also a Training Zone. Currently it’s a bunch of moving circular targets that you can shoot at.
Finally, there’s a teaser about the upcoming Part 3. For spoiler reasons, I won’t be showing the pictures I took of it. All I can safely say is, it could come out this year. The teaser also contains subtle hints on what the possible final part of the HDS could be about. And it seems that Alex might not be done with his Project Rebirth plan.
Speaking of teaser, Klaus sent me this video that Sayon sent. This looks really, really interesting. Huggi wants revenge, and it’s up to the players to help her get it.

.
So, that’s about it that I can thi— oh, wait. There is one more thing. Mmmm. Something I’ve been thinking of (still VRChat related). Just thinking about BTDB, and what I should do with him. See, even with the scales, people still ask “what are you?” when they look at my avatar. Because I don’t look like any dragon they’ve ever seen. Typically dragons have horns on the top of their head, not on the sides.
Maybe it’s the pokadots, that makes people question if it looks like a ‘toy’? *sigh* Wish I found another scalesona. Though I feel like I’m ‘locked’ into it. But, this isn’t the topic. It’s once again if I should make him into a Dutchie, since Best Boi V2 was based off of Kael’s model, it shouldn’t be that hard to paste my texture file over (with some edits). Mainly, I want that tail (the same tail shape I’ve seen that L1ch and Nappz have, one without the fur).
Of course, pride gets in the way of this. Having Kael’s smug face in it, really turns me off. Yet this hasn’t deterred hundreds of people from grabbing the model, and making their own personal Dutchie; with their only answer being “I just like the model”.
Oh how I wish pride didn’t bother me. Kael and I are both scalies. So why should I feel envy, over the fact he fucking beat me of having a dragon model (all because I don’t know how to do it myself.. and still don’t)?
Fucking pride, man. I can feel it eating at my soul, sometimes saying “just pay $500 or so to have your very own BenieTheDragon model, then you won’t have to use another!”
If I was made out of money, you better believe I’d do ANYTHING to have a personal model off of that pic art I found years ago. Even someone to do a ref sheet of it, would be awesome.
*deep sighs*

Alright, that’s it from me. If you’ve made it this far without skimming through the post, thanks for reading (and your patience)! If there’s anything else that suddenly pops in my head that happened before I make this post, I’ll be editing to include it.

Cube World… LIVES?! Four tweets from the dev

Well, this is a shocker. This morning, the main dev of Cube World made four tweets on his Twitter page, all containing one picture. Though not one of them was an apology of suddenly disappearing for many years, it shows he’s still working on the game.
Take it as you will, though… who knows what this means. More teasing of “ha-ha I got your money, and all the work I do on it, you’ll never have as I’ll never release it”? Or the more promising “expect a release sometime this year, here’s some teaser pics”?

Anyway, here’s the three tweets he made. All times are in EST.
8:10am: New Screenshots incoming
8:52am: Cube World has FPs
9:35am: Activate shrines to resurrect yourself
1:00pm: Gem Trading Gnome
Could this be the year Cube World finally gets updated? Or is the dev once again going to disappear for another year or so? Who knows. Let’s hope for the positive outcome.

That other game is VRChat (for now), aka Unity…

Having played Warframe for a long time (and VRChat on rare occasions), I’ve noticed just how inactive I’ve been working on my models in Unity.
It’s time to get back to work on them. And yesterday, I’ve noticed two issues with Red Boi v2. Easy fixes, though;
1. The knife model is using a blank shader instead of the one that came with the model, for some odd reason.
2. Strange ‘twitching’ animation of the thumb when holding the flashlight. Obvious issue with Loop Time being enabled in the animation.

There are other things I want to do with these models;
1. Noticed Sarge and the others are actually Best Boi sized (even though they’re using the Dutchie model), so I’ll be making the Dutchie sized versions of my models, back to the standard Best Boi sized (by setting the scale to 1.0).
2. Making a special BTDB without any lighting (eye beams and firebreath), where I’m not accidentally popping these while hanging out with others.
3. Getting the droopy ears animation from the Dutchie, in both. Should be easy to copy.
4. One thing I really want to do, is extend the tongue for the ‘Blep’ animation. Don’t know how, though.. as the tongue cannot be selected. Maybe I can find a dragon tongue model for free, and use it for the ‘Blep’. Or get in Blender and detach the tongue, and save it as its own model.
5. Another thing (something I found out yesterday), how static the tail is compared to the Dutchie. Since I can’t really make the tail really wiggle like they can (due to the spikes on the top of the tail not exactly glued onto the bones), I could move Kibble’s tail wag over and see if that works. If not, then maybe I can make my own idle animation.
Either that, or I find someone or another way to attach them in Blender.

There’s also something else that was brought to my attention by one friend, that I kind of want to take advantage of, before they patch it. He was able to make his avatar really, really tall without cracking the SDK. He mentioned how.. something about making the avatar slightly smaller, then it goes into negative numbers and gets insanely huge, or something like that. Unfortunately I can only remember certain bits, and what I said, may not be entirely true.
That’s why I’m hoping I can adjust the scale to like 10 or something, and the SDK would allow it. And preliminary testing has shown some quite promising results. Though it shows “your avatar is too tall” and other warnings stating the model’s going past its boundary… it will still allow me to Build & Publish it!! This was not possible before, when making a giant version of BTDB v1 to match the scale of the giant version of Red Boi v1.

But that is just one of the many things I still want to do. One is finding out why the idle animations of the models weren’t working.. for good reason. As I saw this;

What the fuck is up with the tail…? Why is it off to the side like that? The rest of the animations work fine (I can see the ears twitching, and the eyes blinking). But the tail. Why is the tail messed up?
Though it’s to be noted that at the same time, I was also working on a custom tail wag animation for BTDB (thinking I could make my own idle animation). Suddenly I remembered that I still don’t know how to override what’s already there. Hell, I didn’t even know this model had an idle animation (because it never worked).
I also found how I can get into an animation without needing the Animator Controller, including how the ‘Blep’ emote was done. It’s all through Visemes (using the Body as the face mesh). So, this is a thing. Sweet. With some careful copy/pasting, I should even be able to get the ‘Snarl’ emote into my firebreath.
But I’m getting ahead of myself (which has been a thing with the nearly endless things I want to do with these models). With the above knowledge, I pasted the idle animation’s keys into my custom tail wag animation, and this is when I started noticing the tail bent like this.
Undid the change, and this is how I was able to find out how to set an animation to Legacy. By selecting the animation in question, clicking the small button to the right of the padlock and picking Debug. Then clicking the checkbox next to Legacy, then click that button again and set it to Normal. Boom, it’s working… until I saw everyone doing the weird tail thing.

BTDB was even worse; its tail spikes on the bottom of the tail, backwards. What a broken mess. I honestly don’t know how to fix it, so I just ended up deleting the Animation component from all the models. I don’t feel like messing with it. Maybe in the future, though. But I want to speak to Kaelygon first, just to see if they knew about it.

To end this, I’m currently debating with the ‘no visual’ version of BTDB. I wish there was a way to toggle emotes off and on, because the firebreath is part of my scalesona. Yet I also realize just how annoying it is to others, when hanging out with people I’m semi-comfortable with (Sarge, Nappz, Lich, etc…). And having to make several versions of BTDB (ones with and without visuals), makes me sick… since VRChat has no way to categorize one’s personal avatars (right now). May be forced to delete all of my V1 Best Boi models, just to make room. Thankfully there’s no limit, but I want to get some order going.

Unfortunately for me, getting order (even having all of my BTDB versions in one section, with Red Boi in another), is impossible. Because the SDK’s ‘manage uploaded content’ shows avatars in alphabetical order, instead of ‘time of upload’… it doesn’t even show when the avatar was uploaded!

As for throwing my older models in a world, I don’t think it’s going to work like that. The avatar pedestal still needs an ID, and deleting the avatar from my account, removes that ID.. rendering the avatar useless.
