Another world-building update. I’ve been quite ‘obsessed’ of finding an alternate means of building the house I want. And as I said before, I would be asking my friend who’s been helping me learn world building in Unity.
He suggested I try out this ‘SabreCSG‘. It looks insanely powerful, and absolutely perfect for my needs (and who couldn’t turn down the price of Free?).. but it also looks as overly complicated as trying to learn Blender. Decided to ask my friend to do the learning for me (and then teach me easier than they ‘could’).
And after getting another free model (from the same guy who made the picnic table and deck chair for me), he suggested I try ‘ProBuilder‘. First off, this thing actually comes with the newest version of Unity (but the VRCSDK continues to use Version 5.6). I’ve also seen this asset before, how it looks quite simple (compared to SabreCSG). He also linked me this video, showing exactly what I wanted to do.
However, I had concerns about it. If its ‘so popular’, then how come no one’s talking about it in the #worlds section in the VRChat Discord server? Not only that, but there’s no Discord server (only a forum). The lack of quick help, isn’t good.
But I still went with it (instead of Sabre), hoping the linked tutorial will help get me started on the right foot.
Watching said video, the guy explaining stuff in it started to annoy me for not focusing on making a door on the first floor. He didn’t get to this point until he finished the “rulf”(as he called it). Then when he goes to explain what I give a fuck about, he suddenly talks fast (and quiet) as he’s explaining the key combo needed to do the action. Like: “to do a door, select the edge and hit ‘altu’ to make a cut.”
My friend (who I told him about ProBuilder) responded saying this looked interesting (and if I’ve managed to get anywhere with it).
Yesterday, he tried to help me with the door. You’re supposed to make a ‘Edge Loop’ to prepare cutting the doorway out. But the problem (besides having the ALT key set to an annoying camera pan thing), is I couldn’t actually click on the edge I needed (like he could). Yet somehow I was able to FINALLY pull off the cut (and tried my best to do it like the tutorial). But I had gotten to a point when I finally managed to get the doorway.. only for the sides of the door to be missing their ‘face’.
He came back from AFKland, and I was forced to undo what I did (thinking I did it wrong, and he might be able to help do it right). Yet now I can’t fucking recreate what I just did! He was having no trouble, yet I was. We then tried to ‘start from scratch’ (by trying it again from another spot). Unfortunately, I had to eat dinner before I could continue to follow him. He said he would “be around” for me.
But this wasn’t the case when I got back an hour later, completely unresponsive for hours. Of course this infuriated me, knowing this was the only quick way to get help with this program. It (of course) makes me hate depending on others. I didn’t even say anything wrong. All I can assume is he just had something to do (and surely he would respond later)… it’s almost bedtime, and there’s never been a response from him (yet he’s clearly not AFK).
Seems I can’t rely on him anymore, and I’m now going to have to be– wow, the irony. “This program will make you not feel forced to learn Blender! However, you’ll still need to feel forced to learn this program!”
Meh. But maybe I can still pull it off. Since I did it (when he wasn’t looking), surely I can do it again!
But this also brings up a hell of a burning question… is it even worth learning it (for this intended purpose)? Would simply doing what I said I would do (making cubes and fitting them to a specific angle) actually be easier for me? And I wish I really had an answer. But in an attempt to help me get said answer, I asked Oliver (who has nearly finished the custom structure test he showed me a few weeks ago).
He says he has heard of ProBuilder, but felt he didn’t need it. He even showed me what I plan to do.. shouldn’t cause the problem with lag as I’m thinking. Yet I forgot to tell him, what I want to do will have a lot more parts to it (a custom staircase, a living room with a high ceiling, and of course.. multiple windows).
I also asked him what my friend told me; the issue with Unity being shit with scaling textures. He said his workaround, is literally what my friend told me (and how it would be a headache)… to make several sized textures.
As you can see, instead of getting an answer of which would be the better option, I’m left with more uncertainty. Both methods have their pros, and cons. And I have no guarantee ProBuilder would be any better with texture scaling.
I have no one else to turn to for help, but my friend. And if he’s not going to want to help me anymore… what the fuck am I going to do, then? Besides having to learn it on my own (and hope their forum would be good for quick help).
I also hope someone from the VRChat Discord server, has also used it (and used it well enough to help me where I need it).
