Testing 1.3(.1) for myself, thoughts

I’ve said “1.3 is crap. Single Player is no more! Jeb fucked everything up! My computer’s going to be laggy like fuck!”, yet I never tried it. So I decided to man up, take some time off the MRT Server, and create/play an instance in MultiMC for 1.3 testing.

First thing I noticed, the same Singleplayer/Multiplayer menus are still here. I expected there would just be one, cheesy-named “Play Minecraft!” button. I think I’m starting to see what Angry was talking about.
SSP can now enumerate SMP, via a new “Open to LAN” button in the Game menu. I could use this to let angry into my map without having to move it over to the server, and he would have the same mods I would and not need a “client” version, and I wouldn’t need a “server” version (as well as client). Everything would be right there.
This is still true Multiplayer. However, you host it on your computer only. If you want to do it Dedicated on another computer, you do the Multiplayer option. That’s what I’m thinking anyway, correct me if I’m wrong.

So ingame, I tried the new “Large Biomes” map option. I spawned on a Desert biome, which is new to me since in new maps, I’m usually near or on a Jungle biome. It is really big (that’s what she said!). I also played around with the new Editable Book feature, jotting down my thoughts. It seems to have unlimited pages. This is good.
However, I wish you could scroll with your movement keys and edit what you’ve wrote, but apparently it uses a slightly modified Sign code.

The new Creative Inventory is really nice! Loving the Search and Delete features. This will be a nice replacement for NEI, possibly. And the fact you can view your Survival inventory in Creative now, I won’t need CreativeInventory+ anymore.

I played with the new EnderChest block. It works similar to the mod version. But sadly it refuses to do what I’d hoped would remove the W2TS’ need for BuildCraft and EnderStorage. I was hoping an EnderChest would work similar to a Chest Cart, back in the late Minecart Mania. Unfortunately, as I said my hopes were crushed. The only mod I wouldn’t need anymore, is EnderStorage.
And even that is in question. Will it work like the modded version, with BuildCraft? I have no idea, as I’m still waiting for all mods the W2TS uses to be updated to 1.3.1.

So in closing, 1.3 is actually better than I thought it would be. I haven’t seen any worse FPS than I did in 1.2.5, so I’m happy there. It feels like Single Player, but in ways (like the way chunks render), also feels like Multiplayer. Because SMP’s bugs are now in SSP. But it isn’t the end of the world as I had thought. Most of these quirks are tolerable.
But, we’ll see when the mods I use are updated to this new Minecraft version. All I can say is thank goodness I have MultiMC.
