With Warframe in the rear window (yet I can’t help but feel depression for turning away from such a good game), it’s time to.. ugh, tackle the next mess: VRChat’s Unity update.
Since it was announced, I felt this was going to be ‘the death of VRChat’. I honestly didn’t really care for the game, to be honest. Reached that stage once again, that it felt there’s no point in playing something that I only stand around and nearly fall asleep from boredom in VR, because my life isn’t that exciting to share with strangers.
But now, the update’s here. 3/4 of me wants to uninstall this game too, yet the other 1/4 is sort of curious of the reports that the game is actually smoother now.
Getting this new Unity version, I used this guide. Yay, more bloatware.
The process took about 45 minutes (backing up my project file, editing the registry, grabbing the new VRCSDK, importing my old project file into the new version of Unity.. fun times).
Finally I was in the new version of Unity. It showed a really interesting demo of a car with an obstacle course behind it. Possibly a prototype game one could make. But I loaded in my models and imported the latest VRCSDK. Both were done without any issue.
The GUI of the new Unity version thankfully hasn’t changed, but there’s a new model manipulator button that seems to serve as a hybrid of all three features I typically use a lot (rotating, moving, and scaling the model all at the same time). I could see this being useful in some forms (maybe for placing props in a model’s hands).
Did a test upload of BTDB v2, to see if I would get any errors. Not only did the transition from the old to the new Unity version go by without a single hiccup, the same happened for this.
Color me impressed. Thanks VRChat devs. You guys could had charged money for doing this, but you didn’t, and I do appreciate that. And that really wasn’t that painful afterall (other than now having to use this ‘Unity Hub’ to launch Unity now).
Tomorrow I’ll see what damage to the models/worlds I’ve uploaded need to be fixed (with hopefully a simple re-upload). So look for a follow-up post of my thoughts (and if this update made my VR experience better.. or worse).
I’ve also heard the Dutchie is ‘broken’. Best news I’ve heard all week. 😀
