I tried to log into Blogger to post this, and it claimed I didn’t have Javascript or my Cookies enabled for Blogger.
Nomatter what I did in Firefox, nothing wanted to work. So I tried IE and got in, then copy/paste the link to Firefox, and somehow I was able to “override” the issue and I got in.
Anyway. To the post in hand…
I’ve been playing alot of mods from moddb.com while waiting for angry to get back Monday, and I wish I played them sooner.
Some of them are kick ass. Others.. are kinda weird. Let me give you a run down of what I played in the order I played them, and how I liked each one;
Mod 1/4: Weekday Warrior
Game: HL2
My Rating: 3&1/2 out of 5
This is a 3rd person game, not a shooter. You play as a guy who works in an office. You complete office-themed tasks(even a few minigames) for points, such as the big one; trying to figure out what the casuals are planning for the company.
What’s the awesome part is where you go to start your main mission. It’s a HL2’ish setting, with Rebels as guards (I expected Combine instead) and if you stand infront of one and they see you, you have to talk your way out of them not sending you back.
If you manage, the guy disappears. And at the end, well… I don’t wanna spoil it but it’s funny.
Mod 2/4: Half-Life 2 old school
Game: HL2
My Rating: 4 out of 5
HL2 os is about a guy who apparently is a warrior in China. Dragon Warrior maybe? 🙂
This mod has ALOT of Combine killing! I was getting pissed off from them showing up so much. The thing about this game is you got to collect Keys. Yes, keys. 4 different colored keys. Red, Silver, Bronze, and Gold. This mod does have some bugs and even some missing textures.
This mod is very, very fucked up. Meaning it has quite alot of themes. From villages, cities, an ancient dragon shrine, a Mall, an interstate, a jungle, and even… in BioShock!
About mid game, an active volcano is erupting, and is flooding the city with lava. My guess is the dragon spirits are pissed off at the Combine’s presence.
This mod also has many references, such as a statue dedicated to one of the memorable FPS heroes of all time, Duke Nukem. And did I mention there’s even a part where it looks like you got sent to BioShock, and get to go into the Bathysphere, and in Rapture?
The final “boss battle” was unexpected. And so was the ending.
1 note I should add, turn OFF Bloom/HDR before playing this. This mod seems to rape it to death, blinding you with it’s bloom effects.
Mod 3/4: The Citizen
Game: HL2
My Rating: 3&3/4 out of 5
In this one, it’s based what happened shortly after Gordon Freeman began the uprising of the Resistance after the blow at Nova Prospect. You play a lonely citizen who has no wanting to join the resistance until the Combine have locked down his apartment.
Now, he must find a way to join the good guys and fight back. So it’s basically based of you being part of the resistance.
About mid level, you somehow find Gordon’s HEV Suit, or a replacement. Without that suit though, lets say it sucks when you get a new weapon, because you have no HUD without that suit, so you can’t pick weapons. I pretty much was too frustrated when I ran out of ammo in my SMG and I couldn’t switch to my pistol! So… impulse 101 FTW!
Anyway, you soon meet up with the leader of the resistance who has a plan to assassinate Dr. Breen, and you are going for the ride with other rebels. You also get to disguise yourself as a Metrocop and a Combine Elite. Though the constant breathing got on my nerves.
I don’t wanna reveal anymore spoilers, but a “boss” from HL2: EP2 shows up later in the game, and right in your face.
I really loved this mod, and I was pissed when I saw the ending. I wanted more! Being a rebel was so much funner than being Gordon Freeman.
My only other complaint has to be too many fucking LOADING sessions. It seemed like I got 3-4 minutes of action, and then LOADING for what seemed to be close to 2 minutes at times.
Mod 4/4: Half-Life: Visitors
Game: HL1
My Rating: 4 out of 5
You get to be in another’s POV and be in Black Mesa before the time of the accident. Not Sheppard. Not Barney. But a Safety Inspector named Alan Green.
In May of 2000, shortly after Gordon enters Black Mesa for the first time, you enter. You’re cleared to explore some of Sector A and speak to the administrator. However on this day, something will go wrong…
Soon you find yourself fighting for your life in an Alien-filled facility. You don’t get to meet up with Gordon, but you do get to go to Xen and see a few familiar places from the normal game. And also launch a rocket.
It uses the default HL1 Weapons except for a Sniper Rifle that I swear looks like it’s from something I downloaded for either TFC or CS 1.5. However I seldom had to use it, which was sad.
Anyway, this mod also has a few issues with doors that refuse to open when they are supposed to, and dumb scientists that don’t know they can unlock doors. Had to use noclip quite alot.
Not to mention when you “enter” the tram that takes you to Sector A’s Visitor Access. There is no tram. Just hit a button over your head, the screen goes black, and after the loading, you find yourself magically in the complex.
Overall, it’s a good mod, and the ending music is pretty nice. Pretty wild seeing a new chapter in the Half-Life saga. Though I wish it was more interactive.
The other “mod”, that is if you even call it a mod..more like a texture replacement pack that the maker considered it a mod, is for OP4. Called Opposing Force: Redux. It’s supposed to have new weapons, sounds, and better graphics using Steam’s new technology, but still uses OP4’s current story.
