This is one of the several games I got from the Humble Indie Bundle 12. So, what’s this game about? It’s a first person exploration game, back in the late 90’s. 1995 to be exact.
The time of VCRs, Cassette Tapes, Record Players, Typewriters, Nintendo, and Pen Pals. This was before the Internet and cell phones became famous. So yes, this was before our current time Digital Age. And wow does it make me feel OLD!
The game takes place in a large house in Colorado, on June 7th 1995… the month and year I “graduated” High School. You play as a 21ish year old girl named Katie, who has just came home from a year long trip in Europe.
Instead of being welcomed back by your parents and younger sister, you find the house strangely quiet for no reason. As in, you’re the only one here. You go to explore your house in search for clues. Especially why your little sister, Sam, doesn’t want you to find her, or tell anyone what she has done.
While you’re looking around, you keep hearing thunder and creaking in the wood, scaring you shitless. So far, it’s just the game trying to scare the crap out of me.. and it’s effective! No enemies, yet your own fear being controlled.
Playing through to its completion and not offering spoilers, I enjoyed the story. And since I’m good at lists, here’s two of what I like/dislike;
Like:
-No jump scares.
-No one dies in it.
-The story.
-Pieces of my childhood are in it.
Dislike:
-Why was this “Katie” involved in the story, when the main story was about Sam?
-Open a book, end the game. … What? We’re not playing Myst here.
-Why are all of the VCRs in the house, gone? No explanation.
-If you like Dear Ester, you’ll like this.
So there you have it. It’s not a total failure in my book. Others feel it’s a waste of money… I got it for free, and didn’t torrent it. 🙂 All I did was pay $10 for Prison Architect and got all the other games free.
