Yeah, I’m still here. I’ve been playing Kerbal Space Program off and on for at least a month. Also for a month, no BSODs. This is because I’ve been only playing KSP, and I’m getting sick of the game. I wish I can play something else. But until I come up with $3-400, I’m stuck with the same game for months!
I know I should be grateful that not my entire motherboard getting fried, and I definitely am. I just want to be able to do more.
Anyway, let’s talk KSP and why it makes me rage.
It isn’t the fact it keeps trying to “force” me to play legit, but the editor in the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) and SPH (Spaceplane Hanger).
– Camera angles. UGH! I HATE force fixed camera angles! It makes it so hard to work on specific parts, up close and personal.
– Connection nodes. Where should I start with this? So parts have these nodes on them, telling you where you can connect them to. Well, this is good of building things perfectly symmetrical in a tube shape (aka, rockets). But this is the only good reason for them.
Want to build something horizontal on a vertical service? FUCK YOU! No connection nodes there! These limits ruin my creativity, and also serious weight/testing for some missions.
There’s also the “delightful” feeling of watching something you spent hours trying to bugfix, go all wrong right infront of you.
Fortunately, KSP has one hell of a community behind it. And they’re pretty nice too, of trying to help you out. As long as you don’t do anything stupid by saying like “wow, thanks SQUAD for caring for us”, then next thing you’re saying “you know what? They suck! Why didn’t they warn us about this?!”.. I’ll explain that a bit later on.
So. The 0.21 patch has finally come. The Space Center is redesigned and looks great, and Kerbin’s mountains got a facelift, and also look great. The Mun also got a facelift; lots more craters and even more challenging to land on.
I haven’t tried the update, due to waiting for the modders to update what I use. But that’s not the only thing that was keeping me away. Something much worse loomed over the horizon.
And soon it showed its ugly head… “ASAS is gone!!!”, the community cried. It’s been replaced by what are called: “reaction wheels”. These realistic reaction wheels are used even in IRLs rockets and crafts, like the Hubble Space Telescope.
But if I wanted realism, I would go to NASA and train to be an astronaut… not from a game, that I got used to using ASAS to hold the heading of dozens of my flights since I got the version. Now we’re forced to use these reaction wheels; more parts. More weight to throw off my already perfectly-balanced landers… 😛
This is just how I see it, going by what I’m hearing. As I said, I haven’t tried the update. But this caused a major firestorm, between people that say “why did they DO THIS?! RAGE!!!”, and “wow, you whine too much! It works for me!”. There’s also the “I did what you said and it still isn’t working right! This has to be bugged.” people.
Me? I was the “This is their game. We’re stuck with it.” person, thinking the devs didn’t care. These reaction wheels, I thought were possibly want the devs wanted in the first place instead of a ‘cheaty’ version of it (aka the old ASAS).
But the devs actually do care, which surprised me more than the lead dev posting two replies after mine, asking for people to fill in bug reports. The next afternoon, 0.21.1 was released; the first ever patch of KSP.
This is where I was all “Wow, ok, I was wrong about the devs not caring!”. Then someone posted “I wish they just had done nothing and kept the old ASAS”. That’s when rage took over, knowing we were fucking stuck with these damn things. And that’s when I just had to open my mouth and say: “The devs tricked us! They didn’t warn us about these hidden, unwanted changes!”. Of course this caused people (and I don’t blame them at all) to be confused and say “You praised them, now you’re pissed? Are you ever happy? I think you’re a troll.”
Since then, I “banned” myself from the General Discussion section of the forum. Too much embarrassment. But I’m also still pissed at them. In the videos I saw, they made it look like “Remember back then when ASAS kept shaking your ship or station apart? No more! We fixed it! Now you can turn and ASAS will remember what you did! Fly SSTOs even better!!”. Never did they mention ASAS would be downgraded.
I mean, I’m pissed off enough of the editor. I don’t need my game experience to be all “Awww… you didn’t put enough Reaction Wheels (or) didn’t put them where they’re supposed to go! Hopes and Dreams ruiner engage!!. Already I rage and get depressed when my craft are “not fucking good enough for this game”. This would make it even worse!
But the fact I never tried this game and just basing everything off of what I’m hearing, I never have experienced these problems (being on 0.20 still). Maybe the Reaction Wheels don’t weigh as much as I’m thinking. And there are ASAS-like reaction wheels you can use.
But the fear that it’ll be worse, keeps me away. I mean, I suck with this game already. These reaction wheels may, then again may not ruin everything I try to fly, even simple rockets. How can you possibly write a bug report for “User sucks at this game”?
Especially hearing that if you use a manned rocket and kill a Kerbal, it’s a permadeath. There is a way to bring them back, but it’s inconvenient.
I just… I don’t know if I want to risk it. It’s the saying of “moving out of your comfort zone”. I like staying in it. Yes, “it’s just a game”. But you know me, I don’t think of it like that.
