Despite the save issues, I managed to defeat the really difficult final boss (a lot better than Dead Space 2’s anti-climatic “boss” fight) and beat the game, and possibly the end of the series… or is it? Though I don’t feel a Dead Space 4 coming, because the Necromorth threat has been defeated, and the human race is finally saved. Likely there would be a DLC or two for co-op, knowing EA. This will be explained in the Spoilers section.
Was it worth the $60, in my honest opinion? No. More like $50. First time I said that to a Dead Space game. This was mainly because of the flawed save/load system, and the “bad ending”, that I’ll discuss in the Spoilers section.
However, it could had been worse. I could had been one of the unfortunate to have their game reset/crash during the Prologue, and having an unplayable game.
Not having a life, actually helped me complete it.
Overall, the game was… different, than the previous two games. The first two, had you trying to survive and just find a way to get the hell off of that ship. This one, gave you the option of leaving, but you knew that if you turned your back on humanity, you wouldn’t have a planet to come home to, and this was your chance to finally stop the horror; to stop the markers at its source.
My favorite part of the game, and I’m sure others would agree, flying around in Outer Space above the planet (Zero-G is fun). It wasn’t as “free” as I hoped it would be. You’re still forced to use the Skip to go between ships. I was hoping to just fly to ships just by using my suit’s thrusters.
So anyway, to talk more about what I thought of the game, will reveal spoilers. So if you’re one of the many that hate being spoiled, don’t click the “Read More >>” button. That is your fair warning.
Well, either you played the game already, or you hit the button by mistake. Either way, I warned you. Let the spoiler train roll on in!
So it seems, through all the hell you went through from Dead Space 1 to 3, and killing all of those bad guys, and then defeating the final boss…, EA decided it was best to go and kill off the player character at the end, to make him look like a “true hero”, sacrificing himself to save others. What a load of bullshit!! It makes me feel all of that work was for nothing, because I can’t see it, since I’m dead!
But what’s pretty ironic, the fact I own Mass Effect 3, I’ve been using the N7 Suit from it. So, Shepard and Issac both died the same way. With Issac dead, that’s pretty much the end of the series.
What else is there to talk about? The human race (what’s left of it), is saved from the horror of the Necromorths. Just wish Issac lived to see it.
However…, if you listen to the very end of the credits, you hear someone trying to talk to Ellie, and it sounds like Issac. Perhaps a DLC will come to shed light on this, if either Issac is near death and that was just a final thought in his brain before dying, or he’s actually alive but barely.
Either way, as I said before, I doubt EA would make a Dead Space 4 just to reveal if Issac is alive or not. But the only thing I liked about its ending; no plot holes. Unlike Mass Effect 3’s. Ellie manages to leave the planet safely (the remaining survivor), and they show her leaving and heading back to Earth, and then the credits roll, and you see.. humongous tentacles coming out of the fucking moon, crash-landed on the planet surface.
Now we go for the plot. “Turn it off” was the main focal point for getting down to the frozen planet surface, to deal with the Necromorths. And it made perfect sense to me.
Then later on, EA throws a curveball to the the plot’s ‘face’, with turning it off being actually a bad thing.
The plot never reveals, who in the hell made the original black marker in the first place (and what it was doing on Earth). But it explains of an alien race, found the markers just like us humans did, and the frozen planet wasn’t always like this. The markers twisted this race and turned them into the Necromorths. But, they were also smarter than us. They found out the moons, were the source of the marker signal. And they froze the planet, so the moon will not become whole; which is the “make us whole” thing.
Turning off the machine (the machine controlling the planet’s climate), would cause the moon to become whole, and we would all be food for the Necromorths.
And it doesn’t even mention, why was there so much ship debris above the planet. Apparently, since they’re Unitologists, they committed suicide by releasing their mines and having them turn on eachother? This was 200 years ago, so anything’s possible.
Other things, I found the crafting system confusing. It had potential, but it was missing important stuff (like what a Tesla Core is used for as a weapon, and what weapon parts would go with what weapons (a good example of this, what weapons would a Heavy Compact Frame is used for)). The crafting system seemed like a big guessing game, of just throwing parts together and hoping you’ve made something good.
Still, having combined weapons was pretty good, and something I think no other 3PS/FPS has done (not even Borderlands with its plethora of guns). I just wish it had more of the classic weapons back (loved the Pulse Rifle, and fortunately it makes a comeback).
And the last thing to discuss, the new minigame. I have never raged, ever, in a Dead Space game. I screamed in fear and nearly jumped out of my seat. I even felt sick to my stomach (aka, the needle in eye thing in DS2) … but never did I rage.
This is basically, the new door override thing. It, and like most of the game, is encouraged to play on co-op.
This “game” requires you to think fast, getting the little icons to these ticking things, through this board, and getting them selected before time runs out.
What makes it so hard, is you got angled paths that can go up and left at the same time; very hard on a keyboard when you’re under pressure. And if that isn’t bad enough, if you have the arrow key “guy” select one, that path is locked to the mouse movement “guy”. The trainer I was using, unfortunately didn’t have an “infinite time” option for things like this.
So, in conclusion to wrap this up, I wish they had a “Side-Mission” option with your Locator, when you acquire a side mission. I missed three side missions because of it (doesn’t really give an idea where they are).
But all of these side missions are, is battling “dragons” in their “lair” and taking their “treasure”. Aka, resource caches as your reward for doing the side mission (they almost remind me of the weapon/ammo chests in Borderlands). They are worth it, don’t get me wrong. You can get a lot of resources from them.
And that’s my opinion on Dead Space 3. Was it better than the previous two? In most ways, yes. In others, no.
