Most of them are on the lines of “why do you care so much? There’s more important things than worrying about where they came from.”
From a Raider’s point of view, I agree with this. But from the point of view of rollplayers, and people who want to be immersed in WoW’s rich lore, care because we want to learn.
And from a dragon standpoint, dragons want to learn everything they see, to share with lesser dragons once they become Elder.

So if you’re a rollplayer/just want to learn about WoW’s lore, click the “Read More >>” button. Raiders and the rest, don’t waste your time.

With that out of the way, let’s talk serpents, and where they may’ve come from. And also if Yu’lon plays a part in this. So we all know that the dragon aspects were created by the Titans, for a reason (to protect Azeroth). Unfortunately, Blizzard never mentioned where the serpents came from, and if Yu’lon is the “leader” of the serpents, like Alexstrasza is of the dragons.

The birth of the aspects, makes me wonder if the serpents were a “failed experiment” of the Titans (before they managed to create the aspects), and they were banished to Pandaria.
This is just one theory of their creation.

But a theory that a lot seem to agree with, has nothing to do with the Titans. And it also does make a bit more sense. It still however, doesn’t explain how Yu’lon fits into the picture.
That theory, is they weren’t born; but transformed into what they are now, by the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. It explains why the Mogu are so “interested” in enslaving them and turning them against the Pandarian, with their black magic.
It also may answer their ability to fly without needing wings. If you look carefully, you’ll see particles that sometimes drop from the serpent. These are the same colored particles of the Vale, which almost guarantees their proof of existence.

The book on the Founding of the Order of the Cloud Serpents, I call BS. It never explained where the serpents came from, but it does list how the Pandarian care for the serpents, and not the other way around. Before MoP’s release, I dreamed I would meet intelligent Eastern Dragons that can speak, for their rep. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, and I was so disappointed.
Anyway, enough about them. Let’s talk about Yu’lon, and her purpose.

Some say, she’s the “god” of the serpents and guides them with her wisdom. Others say that Yu’lon could be the mother/leader of all the serpents, like Alexstrasza (as I stated before).
But what’s likely, is she could be an idol for the serpents. She could speak for them, who have no real way to communicate. Unfortunately, this isn’t confirmed nor denied.
When you hop on her back, she says: “For thousands of years, we have never seen one of your kind”. Who is “we”, huh? The Serpents, or the Pandarian? This is why it’s possible that Yu’lon could be an idol.

The other strange thing, the repeating cycle. Every 100 years, she takes the form of the serpent at the Jade Serpent statue. And the Pandarian work feverishly trying to get as much jade as they can for said statue (you even help while leveling to get that jade there).
Why does she need to do this? How come she isn’t immortal like the dragon aspects are? Yet, she’s a celestial; a cluster of stars in the night sky that are shaped like a serpent.

Perhaps the backstory behind Yu’lon, is based off of Chinese Myth (chinese dragons), rather than European (true dragons). This is seen of the shape of the Temple of the Jade Serpent. The fact she can feel tired and grow old, doesn’t make her a god of the serpents.
Where did Yu’lon come from, is also a good question. This could go back to the “based off of Chinese Myth” statement. And then could come the “could be an idol of the serpents” statement.

.
.
Anyway, that’s all there is to say about this discussion. Feel free to leave a reply to this. Hoped you enjoyed reading as much as I did typing it.
Wait, what’s that? Why did I end it so abruptly, you ask? I have no knowledge of Chinese Myth, that’s why. 😛

Before I start this blog post, I wanted to address issues that I’ve heard of trying to find the answers to where the serpents came from.
